I have a question regarding the power of these 2 classes of ships. Overall, are heavy cruisers considered less powerful than battleships?
The skill requirements to fit into a heavy cruiser are staggering when compared to fitting into a battleship. This leads me to believe that heavy cruisers should be superior in a one on one encounter. But, after doing some reading on the forums it seems that battleships have the upper hand. Am I totally off? What is the general perception about these 2 classes of ships from you guys that have been playing a while? If battleships are superior why would you take all that time to train for heavy cruisers? Where is the payback for getting a 5x skill to level 5?

HAC = tech 2
BS = tech 1.
That explains the requirements. I am quite sure a HAC has beaten a BS in 1vs 1 on a number of occasions but it all comes down to the skill of pilots.
I've beaten inty's in a frig, AF's in an inty, cruisers in an AF, cruisers in an inty, and cruisers in a frig.
If you trained for a HAC thinking it was a BS beater then you just wasted some sp's.

I understand its tech 2 and I understand that a piolts skill can change the outcome of individual encounters, but it seems to me from purely a skill training perspective that a tech 2 cruiser should be greater in power than a tech 1 battleship while a tech 2 battleship (whenver they may arrive) would be king.

They're advanced, really kick ass cruisers! anyhthing else you think they should or should not do is complete bull****. They're cruisers t2 cruisers, not battleship eaters, godships, or flying squirrels.
If that doesn't do it for you, fly something else. ~{When evil and strange get together anything is possible}~ A tool is only useless when you don't know how to use it. - ActiveX The grass is always greener on the other side. - JoCool |

Heavy Assault Cruisers are sexy, Battleships are boring and everyone flies them.

Some of the HAC are capable of killing BS's without too much trouble but it is all down to how the engagement is set up, if everything in the engagement is right for the HAC but not completely for the BS then the HAC would win but it is in no way a given.
If I'm in a Deimos and a non Caldari BS is within 15k of me, I'll probably kill it seeing as I can do 15-20k points of raw damage in a minute. If it isn't in that range I am unlikely to be able to do it solo.
At the end of the day though HAC's are just a lot more fun than BS's and extremely good in their specialised roles. They are nowhere near as versatile or durable as a BS.

The biggest advantage of bs over any HAC is Heavy Nos. Nos are pretty popular, and it's rather stupid not to have at least one. So if your HAC gets within 25km of the bs, then things will get rather difficult for you.
Basically, HAC is more fun to fly and even tho most people fly bs, there are still a lot of noobs that don't equip properly, thus become easy pickings

Long time no see, which is too true, RL is a complete and total ***** and deserves to be shot. Oh and LTNS is a lot less obscure then IATJC
heavy nos is 8.3 cap/sec med nos is 5 cap/sec ( both t1, t2 med nos is 6c/s ) so give or take a little yep. ~{When evil and strange get together anything is possible}~ A tool is only useless when you don't know how to use it. - ActiveX The grass is always greener on the other side. - JoCool |

Heavy assault cruisers fun expensive toys. If you have the isk and are bored of battleships, this is the way to go.
Battleships are relatively cheap and can be far more effective.
IMO, interceptors are still the most effective tech 2 ships out there in terms of ship cost/risk/how much damage you can cause before you pop.

I agree with Iratus, it really depends on the circumstances of who/what you are attacking. If the BS is setup to fight a HAC it would be very difficult. HAC seem to be best for ganking low sec miners, or PvP when you have maybe some jamming support from a BB etc. I haven't tried it yet but I think a Zealot (damage setup for shields mainly), Deimos and a BB or 2 would be an awesome combination.
I think the payoff is the new style of fighting and fun that can be had. If you have been playing long enough to fly a HAC, you will certainly appreciate how much more fun it is, and think it worthwhile all the time you spent training for it. Don't worry sir!! They couldn't hit an elephant at this ra..... |

maybe, but who in their right mind would equip HAC with 3 med nos? unless it's Ishtar
t1 standard Heavy Nos: 8.33 cap per second, 2 of these is 16.66 cap/sec t1 standard Medium Nos: 5 cap per second, 3 of these is 15 cap/sec
the best thing about Heavy Nos is the big range

3x Medium Diminishing = 18 cap/s 2x Heavy Diminshing = 20 cap/s
Nope, not even equal to. ________________________________________________________

Heavy Assault Ship and Battleship are different, there's no need to compare them.

aye i would agree with that post. They can kill a solo BS, but they can also kill multiple cruisers with ease

As mentioned, a HAC is an advanced Cruiser - more advanced than a Cruiser or Battlecruiser, but lacking the pure size and power of a Battleship. Not to say they aren't powerful - in the correct circumstance a HAC can kill a Battleship in a duel. For example, the Deimos specialises in getting under your nose where your large guns simply can't get to, then pins you down and beats you with damage output on par with that of a Battleship.
In defence of the Battleship, if it uses large energy vampires or torpedoes hitting in a certain type - it is quite likely the HAC will lose, since it has neither the armour hitpoints to withstand punishment in its achilles, nor does it have massive reserves of capacitor like a Battleship. This is what makes, say, a Raven so deadly to a Deimos - even at close-range, the Raven can hit it hard with a torpedo stream, whilst slowly sucking on its capacitor.
Of course, the people who fly HACs are experienced pilots - both in terms of SPs and actual combat hours - so they will rarely face down something they know could very well kill them. What HACs offer is specialised, massive killing power - all wrapped up in the speed and size of a cruiser. Battleships win the wars, but HACs are just fun.

Missles are kinda sucky for PvP atm though. Works great against stupid tacklers though. ------------------------------------------------

Even though most of them have great resistances they're still restricted by HP and most of all by cap. Given equal relevant skills and experience you wouldn't bet against a BS in a BS v HAC fight.
They're great at what they do, and they're fun to fly, but they're not BS beaters and neither they should be.

I'd use my Deimos for PvP if it wasn't for the fact that it's hard as hell to find one on a short notice, while I can buy gankageddons in Yulai. Of course, the Deimos has better tanking and only a bit less damage output than the gankageddon...
