I reported this bug yesterday, although it was on test server.
Is there gonna be a rollback, as some people could have made millions from it, while honest people have allowed you to correct the situation quickly, and with minimal damage to market/economy.
A large mining barge fully equipped with t2 strip miners would be nice

if some one else posts what the exploit was will they be in trouble? if some one posts where to find out about the post will they be in trouble?
Posting about an exploit can result in a warning or a ban. If you post a link to a place, or a description on how to find it, it will be regarded as if you would have posted about it.

Unfortunately, nobody can actually tell anyone on the forum since that's against the rules. However, thinking logically, it had to be something extremely important if they decided to pull the server down as soon as they found out about it. Be glad that they got it sorted.

It was a market related exploit.

Wasn't it more of a bug since some people unknowingly did it, although the people that realised what was happening exploited it? _________________________________________________________

Sorry, but "market related exploit" is all I can say.

It's both, since a bug is a design flaw of some kind and a exploit is when you get an unintentional advantage from that bug.

Edited by: Maya Rkell on 10/02/2005 16:37:47 There's also a difference between people getting one or two items accidentally from it (bug) and people abusing the bug hundreds of times in an hour (exploit).
Leave the first lot's ISK alone (unlikely to have really gained much, if at all - and no, I wasn't even ON just before the reboot and have no idea what the bug is) and go for the exploiters.

Edited by: Scorpyn on 10/02/2005 17:49:50 ...and here I was thinking that there was something wrong with General Discussion, only 2 stickes, but it appears that it's been taken care of
(Didn't want to start a new thread about it so I posted it in an existing one...)
Ok back on topic : Good that you keep us updated and stuff. It was probably the right decision to bring the server down.

It's kinda like this: imagine yourself working in the field, just doing your usual thing, then suddenly you notice a wallet on the ground. You pick it up, it has money. Do you put it down where you find it? do your keep it? do you report a found wallet?
Keeping the wallet would be rather selfish of you, but would you get arrested for it? would police confiscate that wallet? nah Would the police put you in jail for telling others where you found the wallet? nah
Anyway, once the bug has been fixed, letting people know about it should be okay.

I am still curious as to thejustification behind the secrecy on exploits once they're fixed. Surely once it's fixed it is a good news item to say this was what went wrong, this is what we did to fix it. Everyone loves a good gossip and i'm sure this type of thing as these posts prove is a massive opportunity to have a good gossip. If its fixed then no harm can come of it surely?
I am not expecting an official comment from anyone on this but I am curious if anyone can think of a reason why this policy is as it is? Just curious really as I can't but there again i ain't always the genius i like to think i am
Ok, so what the hell is this Golden Ratio? |

Ever hear of the phrase - "Don't give them any bright ideas?"
That's essentially CCP Games trying to protect their assets and everyone's account. Don't question it. Don't talk about it. Thats their policy, and it's the one everyone agreed to when they started the game for the first time (and after every patch). If you don't appreciate the terms they have set forth then it's simple: stop playing and cancel your subscriptions.
Most likely no matter what MUD/MMORPG you play, each one has a similiar clause concerning exploits.
Security through obscurity, no matter how feeble, does have small merit.

I hope, that the logs show, who excessively abused this bug. In my opinion, they and their alts should loose everything except a rookie ship. Then they can decide for themselves, if they want to work hard to get everything back or give up. They thought that gaining an advantage from this bug is ok, so they shouldn't complain, if they loose some stuff instead
BTW. Shutting the servers down after only one minute was a good decision. Even if I had lost my battleship, I would still say, that the decision to react immediatly was right. And everybody can petition a ship loss due to this anyway.
