There was a quick server reboot today to prevent an exploit.
-----
And for those of you who doesn't read all posts before you reply, here's what GM Wyrm posted on page 3.
Originally by: GM Wyrm Again, sorry about the short notice. We needed to take it down as soon as possible. We are applying a hotfix as we speak.
If you log back in and find yourself in a pod, send us a petition through the Ask A Question page and we will find the scrap metal that used to be your ship weld it back together.
-----
Latest ETA for server to be back up is at some point before 1500GMT/EVE Time.
-----
There's some news about it.
Originally by: Oveur We had to take Tranquility down to address an severely exploitable situation. We found the bug causing the market exploit and were back up 80 minutes later. We are now working on reversing the damage. We apologize for the downtime and hope you understand the need for drastic measures under circumstances like this.
-----
I will delete the locked threads to clear up the first page of this forum.

So was the server reboot just to give CCP 20 mins to figure out what to do about it... or did a fix actually get applied during this reboot?
I can just imagine a Dev reading the forums and saying, "OMG, EXPLOIT! I don't know what to do, panick is setting in! Quick! Someone pull the plug to give me time to think!!!"

If the server had been left alone til reboot then people would benefit from the exploit aall day long, then people would complain that nothing was done and these other people gained something they shouldn't..
If the server was taken down instantly then the exploit would not become well-known and abused by mass-players as it would be stopped immediately, but people would complain that they lost their ships etc to the reboot.
If the server was taken down after a 1min warning the above would happen, but with less deaths as some peeps could warp out to safety..
I applaud the decision ___________ ~Fredbob~

Well done. Game breaking exploits must be splatted like bugs, and this one was. I am confident you have the balls to roll back too, if that is needed.
To all people complaining - get a clue. Too many times the GMs don't take action fast enough and while it is all nice and dandy for a moment, it can break a game for A) long time B) forever.
If the petition line did get longer - who cares. They are replacing the lost stuff and all that is sooo minor nuisance to what this exploit was about, if what was posted in another thread was true.
Once more, well done, whoever brought the server down quickly.

Actually thats wrong, you dont need anything between the 'today' and 'to'. Its the same comment and shouldnt be seperated. Basically ',' are only put in place where there should be a break or to make another point.
eg: 'I was walking down the street, after leaving my house, to get to the shop'

Yeah, great decission!
The exploit where you could [secret, dont say it again] if you [OMFGIFYOUSAYITAGAINWEWILLCANCELYOURRIGHTTOBREATHE] would have been devastating to the game. 1 minute warning was really a huge service to the players, considering the potential damage that could be done in 1 minute by [OKTHATSITWEKNOWWHEREYOULIVE].
Roll back or whatever you need to do. That might also have the beneficial effect of getting some of all the whiners to cancel their subscription. Hell, I'd vote for a daily rollback just to get rid of them :D

I was 2 minutes from a skill change and got no warning...I don't care how bad the bug was, give everyone at least 1 minute to do something before taking the game offline for over 30 minutes. Also with no server message in sight for a new boot who knows how long it is going to be until the server is up. I wouldn't be so annoyed 'cept for the fact that I was waiting for that skill to change to GO TO SLEEP. I understand an exploit is around and server had to be down quickly to keep it "controled" so why do people type there little tantrums "im gonna cancel subscription" ? when ccp doing there best to make the game equal to all, kinda sad really with people crying out CANCEL SUBSCRIPTION like they want ccp to write them a personal e-mail asking for them back i guess at the end of the day if you keep leaving games everytime there is a problem then you be soon going back to playing cards LOL Sorry about this but i needed to say whether its relevant to topic or not

Edited by: KIAHicks on 10/02/2005 13:43:40 Whatever the exploit was, I hope those who have profited either on purpose or unknowingly (no idea how obvious an exploit it was, as I havn't been on today :P) should have that profit removed.
Either way, I'd rather see a reboot and fix than have another exploit doing the rounds.
A rollback would only be needed if ccp have no way to track those who "benefited" from the exploit. No idea if they can or not, as I have no idea what it is yet.. but I'm sure I'll find out later :)

(No idea of actual bug/exploit, just random thoughts)
So basically people have acquired items through market in excess numbers and/or lowered prices, since point of time x.
1. Therefore it should be investigated if the point of time x can be traced. 2. After that it is necessary to investigate if the transactions can be traced from the point of time x. 3. Then it's time to analyze if the removal of those transactions can be handled in timely fashion. (Got 2 items, sold one, one you sold to sold it again, used the money to buy something.. and soforth) 4. If it's not timeworthy, then it's decision time for rollback. 5. If it's rollback time, it's time to decide if it's the "point of time x" or some point of time after it (and analyze the transactions between time x -> rollback)
So we'll be waiting this day.. guess cpp is in crisis meeting.

I understand an exploit is around and server had to be down quickly to keep it "controled" so why do people type there little tantrums "im gonna cancel subscription" ? when ccp doing there best to make the game equal to all, kinda sad really with people crying out CANCEL SUBSCRIPTION like they want ccp to write them a personal e-mail asking for them back i guess at the end of the day if you keep leaving games everytime there is a problem then you be soon going back to playing cards LOL Sorry about this but i needed to say whether its relevant to topic or not
Happy gaming

For those that are cancelling their subscriptions, sounds to me like you're ****ed you didn't get a chance to utilize the exploit and now you're jealous. Gimmie a break!
I've worked on a network server with just three remotes. All wireless, spread over about 15 square miles. In the deserts of Iraq. Where Iraqi's tried breaking in all the time. Some were successful, most weren't. We were always taking the server down to check the integritity of the server, correct weaknesses and assess unauthorized accesses. Funny how the only people who complained were the immature people. Have some respect for the way CCP is trying to fix this situation. Be patient and be glad that CCP has enough respect for US, the gamers, to actually be on top of things. They will do their best to make things right.
Until you've tried running a game based on a WAN, keep your little whinny crap to yourself.
The only thing you will see me cry about on here is if the peeps who used the exploits don't get permanently BANNED from this game.

Personally i have never heard of ANY game which has had no updates most games need updates sometime or another due to problems with original. Unfortunately for online games which i believe? are slightly more complex and can be fully upgraded for the better (like to Exodus) are bound to have bugs in it. So i take all those who moaned and whined about bugs and crap will be moaning and whining yet again for the next big exodus'y thing? lmao

I simply cannot understand, why it is so hard to say "we have a problem with the market/missions/mining/pvp". That would'nt give anyone the possibility to cheat but instead calm down the rumours. BTW - using the scissors leaves holes - and those are informative too.

Evidently you do since you made a post about it fool.
I used my experience on a very small network in an attempt to illustrate that it's time consuming and quite difficult to keep one running when you have peeps taking advantage of weaknesses instead of reporting them. Now I never expected Iraqi's to report weaknesses , but it sure would be nice if the disgusting little cheaters of the world didn't cause us so many problems by taking advantage of things in this game.
And if you don't have something intelligent and constructive to say, don't remove all doubt as to your stupidity by opening your mouth little child.

Exlpoits (once fixed) should be explained to the gaming community, also the people found to have taken advantage should be named and shamwed (and banned)
This whole "Thou shalt not discuss anything in the game" mentality of CCP is very dictorial and makes us feel like mushrooms. You can admit that you make mistakes/bugs so why not give us a bit more info?

Reposted here just for Wrangler :)
This is not a complaint, a whine, just a serious question as to whats going to happen regarding this issue. Ive read the rules and im trying to tiptoe round them without stubbing my toe, but I do feel this is a serious enough issue and needs to be queried and addressed.
Have those who gained unfair advantage had the advantage reversed? Or will this be being done over the next period?
I only ask this as an item I got prior to petition this, is still there. If I havent had it reversed, it concerns me that others havent also? There are also another couple of issues regarding it I still see, but I will not discuss them here.
I only ask here on the forums, instead of petition as I think everyone will be interested in the answer, and i didnt wish to clog the petition queue anymore.

Singularity was like that for a few minutes while we were still in the process of applying the hotfix to it. That won't happen on TQ.
Hopefully I can get that ISK refunded to buy more :|

Thats cool, I didnt expect an answer right away, I just wanted to assure it was bought to the attention of the people involved.
I'm sure the devs are aware of all the facts, but a reminder notice never hurts. We all miss even obvious things at times

Someone told me the petition system is manned by an elderly couple. I have to ask though, in light of this recent crisis, will they be getting a hand from other staff members? Or just be left and expected to manage? ------------

There's some news about it.
Originally by: Oveur We had to take Tranquility down to address an severely exploitable situation. We found the bug causing the market exploit and were back up 80 minutes later. I reported this bug yesterday, although it was on test server.
Is there gonna be a rollback, as some people could have made millions from it, while honest people have allowed you to correct the situation quickly, and with minimal damage to market/economy.
A large mining barge fully equipped with t2 strip miners would be nice

Posting about an exploit can result in a warning or a ban. If you post a link to a place, or a description on how to find it, it will be regarded as if you would have posted about it.

Unfortunately, nobody can actually tell anyone on the forum since that's against the rules. However, thinking logically, it had to be something extremely important if they decided to pull the server down as soon as they found out about it. Be glad that they got it sorted.

Wasn't it more of a bug since some people unknowingly did it, although the people that realised what was happening exploited it? _________________________________________________________

It's both, since a bug is a design flaw of some kind and a exploit is when you get an unintentional advantage from that bug.

Edited by: Maya Rkell on 10/02/2005 16:37:47 There's also a difference between people getting one or two items accidentally from it (bug) and people abusing the bug hundreds of times in an hour (exploit).
Leave the first lot's ISK alone (unlikely to have really gained much, if at all - and no, I wasn't even ON just before the reboot and have no idea what the bug is) and go for the exploiters.

(Didn't want to start a new thread about it so I posted it in an existing one...)
Ok back on topic : Good that you keep us updated and stuff. It was probably the right decision to bring the server down.

It's kinda like this: imagine yourself working in the field, just doing your usual thing, then suddenly you notice a wallet on the ground. You pick it up, it has money. Do you put it down where you find it? do your keep it? do you report a found wallet?
Keeping the wallet would be rather selfish of you, but would you get arrested for it? would police confiscate that wallet? nah Would the police put you in jail for telling others where you found the wallet? nah
Anyway, once the bug has been fixed, letting people know about it should be okay.

I am still curious as to thejustification behind the secrecy on exploits once they're fixed. Surely once it's fixed it is a good news item to say this was what went wrong, this is what we did to fix it. Everyone loves a good gossip and i'm sure this type of thing as these posts prove is a massive opportunity to have a good gossip. If its fixed then no harm can come of it surely?
I am not expecting an official comment from anyone on this but I am curious if anyone can think of a reason why this policy is as it is? Just curious really as I can't but there again i ain't always the genius i like to think i am
Ok, so what the hell is this Golden Ratio? |

Ever hear of the phrase - "Don't give them any bright ideas?"
That's essentially CCP Games trying to protect their assets and everyone's account. Don't question it. Don't talk about it. Thats their policy, and it's the one everyone agreed to when they started the game for the first time (and after every patch). If you don't appreciate the terms they have set forth then it's simple: stop playing and cancel your subscriptions.
Most likely no matter what MUD/MMORPG you play, each one has a similiar clause concerning exploits.
Security through obscurity, no matter how feeble, does have small merit.

I hope, that the logs show, who excessively abused this bug. In my opinion, they and their alts should loose everything except a rookie ship. Then they can decide for themselves, if they want to work hard to get everything back or give up. They thought that gaining an advantage from this bug is ok, so they shouldn't complain, if they loose some stuff instead
BTW. Shutting the servers down after only one minute was a good decision. Even if I had lost my battleship, I would still say, that the decision to react immediatly was right. And everybody can petition a ship loss due to this anyway.
