I started eve because back in 2006, I picked up a copy of pc gamer in the school library and ready the 5-6 page story about the Guiding Hands heist? The fact in a game you could do something that sneaky and crushing was just intoxicating.
That and the full page picture of a crusader, it looked so evil
So what drew you into the game?

I forgot.. I was annoyed by all those fantasy MMO grindfests and somehow stumbled upon EVE while looking for interesting games. The fact that skills just take time with no grinding involved was probably what made me try it. That and spaceships. After a week of desperately trying to understand what this game is about i got addicted to the complexity of it..
So here i am, spinning my ships in station all day long.

They are so different from each other, but I really enjoy Eve.

I started playing when I started working as a GM in early 2003, in the beta.
But I didn't really start PLAYING until I killed someone in PVP. After that first adrenaline rush I first started really thinking about what to put on my ships. I knew I got lucky that first time, and wanted to make sure I would feel that same thing again as soon as possible.
P.s. look forward to reading the rest of this thread!

Saw a friend playing it at the Dorm I was at. It looked sort of interesting. A few months later I met my Girlfriend who was also playing it and she set me up with a free Trial so I would stop screwing aroung with the Ship Veiwer every 15 minutes(also she wanted a Plex). I then played through the Trial Account and fell in love... With the game .
I been playing ever since, she went back to WoW.

I played Elite, and loved it (my mate and I would take turns at docking and kept copious trading notes), back in the C64 days and probably a 100 or more single player games since.
I have always been a solo RPG player but felt the need to join something far bigger. So I started my search for a MMO to sink my teeth in to, having never played one before a year or so ago.
EvE just kinda caught my eye. Needless to say, here I am and yes, I've bitten off more than I can chew but I haven't looked back...

I only tried it out for a few days and didn't like Eve at all, so I went back to playing E&B.
When Earth and Beyond shut down, I came over to Eve and realized that I hadn't given it enough of a chance during the beta. Mainly because I found that the game was fantastic. ;)

Edited by: Ishtanchuk Fazmarai on 31/05/2011 13:31:43 In short, X3 Reunion... online!
In long, Elite II, Wing commander: Privateer, Privateer 2: The Darkening, Master of Orion II, Freelancer, Star Trek Bridge Commander and X3 Reunion... online! Or, how I have been playing starhip-themed video games for 18 years.
Plus the "no grinding for skills" meaning I was in equal footing to a bloody kid who could play 6 hours a day. Once you get the grip, EVE can be very rewarding to the casual player who is too short of time to really get into serious gaming... and I love it.
Just would like to get more solo PvE content & stop being pushed into lowsec/combat PvP by silly decisions like removing Lvl 5 missions from hisec... but I already said that in the annual survey.

I was introduced to eve by a friend who started playing in 2006. The stagnant market in PC games for space sci-fi helped too as there is little to no competition.
What has kept me around is the brutality of this game. Terrible documentation and almost no in-game explanation for just about everything beyond fitting a frigate. The best part of this game to me is the PvP as a loss means something in this game. No silly graveyards. You die, you lose. Only two other games have ever managed to raise my pulse like this one does. Wipeout 3 and the old Alien vs Predator (scary in the dark^^).
Sadly all the people I know in RL that recommended this game to me no longer log in, as the game has been progressively softened to draw in the WoW exodus. Lowsec used to be vibrant, now it is mostly dead. Nullsec is so broken its not even funny. Still about once every 45 days I do actually get a decent fight that doesn't include soul crushing lag, sperging meta gamers, and ECM.

I played X-btf, and every subsequent X game up to TC, but always fancied playing spaceships with other people. I was initially put off trying eve when I found out you couldnt manually fly, and jumped to some fairly lame conclusions about how the game would play. Then my friend told me about the 21 day trial, and the ability to pay with isk, this was enough to make me try the trial.
I immediately realised that my expectations of the navigation system were too pessimistic, and with some frequent clicking I could near enough fly manually anyway. Being a strategy player, the making of the isk was easy enough, and the myriad of fitting options is as great as it is overwhelming to a rookie. I was killed within my first 2 days, and was instantly hooked. The lack of game boundaries is unique to me. I now plex 1 account and sub a second.
Personally the absence of avatars in the game was actually an attractor, I used to make prim models in second life and got so tired of people tarting about in avatars instead of actually doing anything I gave up, same thing for my gf and wow. Spaceships are enough for me, and as long as the new CQ is optional, it won't put me off.
Keep focusing on the spaceships and unless you force me into an avatar, you've got a subber for much time to come!

Beware, long nostalgic post.
Originally by: Aaron Zebulun I started eve because back in 2006, I picked up a copy of pc gamer in the school library and ready the 5-6 page story about the Guiding Hands heist?
I remember reading that, I may even still have it lying around as a keepsake. Can't find it at the moment but I do have the PC Gamer with the "All About EVE" article (Oct 2004) and the EVE Investment Bank scam (Nov 2006).
And back then I was a huge Freelancer fan, EVE seemed just like Freelancer but on a vastly more epic scale. I also had a vested interest in Games Workshop's Battlefleet Gothic and greatly enjoyed reading any article about it in White Dwarf.
But alas, I was only a wee teenager. Not old enough for a debit card, there was no way I'd be able to pay the subscription for EVE. As I grow the memories of EVE faded and it's deathblow came when I started playing WoW shortly after starting college.
During 2007 I'd played the EVE trial, it was everything I thought it would be and more. I remember saving up alot of ISK and buying myself a Rifter. Unfortunately, one module was in Amamake... I undocked right as a fight was taking place outside and the rest is history. I effectively ragequit after that.
WoW kept me entertained for a number years till at university I met some people on my course that also played WoW and more importantly EVE as well. I'd always wanted to give EVE another go and now with some friends to guide me I took the plunge once again on 14th of June 2008.
I haven't looked back since and Anddeh here will be celebrating his third anniversary of obtaining his Pilot's License in a few weeks. --- There are two sides to the EVE community; those that scream for change and those that scream against it. Often they are the same person. |

I was browsing ****ography and instead of the usual graphic adult rated pop up's that normally come up, it was filled with space ships and told me a "New adventure awaited! Make new friends!" And while I normally don't click the ****o pop ups something with eve just fascinated me... I don't think it was the adventure...Oh yea the prospect of having friends ;_;
But just like a frat it costs a monthly fee and you soon learn that the drama is more entertaining than the actual frat.

In early 2004 I moved in with a friend who played, he showed me a little bit of gameplay and most importantly, the Thorax. Within a month i was in one and enjoying drone fury in low sec. I had to quit for a spell when i moved in with the then girlfriend, but she turned out to be considerably less interesting and was promptly ditched. Been playing now on and off since 2005, its not just the game that brings me back after each rage quit its the chat on coms and the absolute joy i receive from wiping out fleets i had no right engaging. Here's to the next 7 years!

I got intrested in EvE when I read about the down-fall of BoB in one of the Game magazines.. I thought it was epic that in-game drama had made it on to the pages of magazines. Although I did not start playing til much later the next year. The ever evolving nature of EvE keeps it fresh (although I don't agree with all the "fixes" by CCP)

I had heard of Eve before but never really noticed it. Then I went through the Demos etc. in the Steam store and stumbled upon the 14 days Trial for Eve. On the next day I read up on the game, watched some YouTube vids.. and was amazed. And still I can't understand why I never tried Eve before.. I guess when I heard from it first I was still at school/Uni and didnt have the ISK uhm.. EUR for that, as the other MMO I played then and still do is only about EUR 6 per month.

What really got my attention to EVE was the whole prospect of everything is in one universe/server and when you lose something its gone, later after discoverign everything is made and produced byt heplayers it draged me in even more, but what really got me in was the impact that one person could have in the world of EVE, where every action had impact , and this was way back in early 05 for me, and the game has grown ever since then and continues to evolve, granted not always in the best way but CCP have always gone for something brand new and not just recycling the same old gimmiks that have been tryed over and over again by every other MMO out there, keep up the good work CCP.

Years ago, back in the seventies I was playing Traveller. Played a bit with Traveller II and other role playing games but the idea of heading out amongst the stars grabbed me. Hardly surprising as I remember the moon landing as a kid at junior school.
Then in later life I played a few science fiction play by mail games, particularly Supernova II and then, one day, I picked up a copy of Flagship and read an article on the game and, well, it may as well have said in big coloured letters, "Myfanwy, this is your game."
My only complaint is that I didn't find this game sooner.

I began back in 2007. A good buddy of mine, who also happened to be roommates with me at the time, was playing this weird spaceship game. To me it looked like a space background with little red +'s he was shooting balls of light at in something called a "mission". It looked boring as all get out, but he began to explain to me how practically anything is possible in the game. Piracy, huge hundred man fleet fights, hauling, mission running, owning space (Sov). And then he mentioned the one thing that actually piqued my interest. Mercenaries.
I inquired a bit about it, and instead of trying to explain to me what a mercenary was in this game he showed me some videos.
History of the MC (1 of 3) History of the MC (2 of 3) History of the MC (3 of 3)
The possibilities of this game really sunk in, I installed the client. Character creation was cool, I chose my character for the "RP" aspect even though I never planned on RPing. My frigate was awesome, this "noob" ship looked pretty cool! Then I undocked, camera all zoomed in on my ship. I begin to zoom out when something starts covering my screen and I see this Apocalypse battleship right next to my ship. The scale was absolutely amazing. My heart pounded with how awesomely huge that ship was and I knew I was hooked.

Edited by: Maverick2011 on 31/05/2011 15:41:27 Edited by: Maverick2011 on 31/05/2011 15:41:01 I started in 2009 and thought the game was too complex for me.Also i couldnt accept being a ship.
Then in 2011 after almost giving up the MMORPG genre due to WOWziness effect, i decided to try this again when i read about the 21day trial and game costing 19 bucks.
To my surprise the graphics were much better, the tutorial was very good and all that complexity became a pleasure to start learning. |

Always been a huge sci-fi fan, and I loved games like Star Flight. Sandbox space games that allow you to customize your ship and wreck havoc on the galaxy. The options in Eve sucked me right in, mining to manufacturing, being a good little pilot to being the feared pirate null space, the options seemed perfect for me. Being able to grab space and turn it into your own sovereign territory is also a massive selling point. So I've been playing off an on (would be constantly on if not for time constraints of life) for nearly two years now.

A friend of mine had been telling me for months about World Of Warcraft...I installed a trial CD on my computer, but before I started playing it I was browsing Gameplanet Forums and saw a thread for EVE Online, and thought I would take a peek. Read a few posts and thought "this game sounds pretty good."
Googled some screenshots and went to the EO website and downloaded the client. Floated around Cistuvaert for 20 minutes getting to know how the overview and controls worked, and got hooked :D

Was doing earth and beyond beta and some of the guys on the E&B beta forum were talking about this new game called "Eve Online" that was going into beta.
I got into the Eve beta test group 6 I think? Eve was one of the very few games I beta tested and continued to play after going live. That long couple of weeks between end of beta and live release seemed like the longest two weeks ever.

I played sci-fi space games whole my gaming life...
So i ended up in X3...losing nights to it One day i read about Eve on X3 forum and it seemed interesting. But i didnt tried it right away...
I finally decided to try it out after reading about GHSC heist somewhere and than watching this video... ..after watching it for 2/3 times in a row i signed up for a trial account right away...
So you might say that these three things were what got me to eve
It seems to me by the posts here that quite a few people have come to eve because of X games and GHSC heist ...

A heart attack.
Seriously.
Late Nov of '07.
Was stuck in bed and then housebound for a bit longer than sanity would allow, and while surfing in general I ran across an advert for the game.
Downloaded it, gave it a go on the 14 day trial, subbed on day 3 and never looked back.
Been doin' it wrong every day ever since.
Honestly, I've never had so much fun failing so miserably at a game.

In around 2005, somehow I came across an epic, really well-written story about an Eve scam. I think the author was Nightfreeze or something like that. After reading it, I had to check out the game. I had never played an mmo before and was really blown away. Having played numerous mmo's since, none could really stack up. To me, Eve is the only true mmo I've played, the rest hold your hand so much they feel like giant multi-player versions of single player games (if that makes any sense). He put... creatures... in our bodies... to control our minds. He made us... say lies... do things. |

Surfing the net, finding this game. Then forgetting it. A year later i surfed the net again and found it then with a huge spider drone. I began to dream of using tons of spider drones to rip into a ship and use them to kill the crew and take it over with drones.
Then i read some story about drones doing just that and i was overjoyed. I pondered about it then finally decided to give it a try. Then i opened the game and within minutes my dream of combat spiders was crushed. So instead i turned to mining and found a nice corp then for 14 days i played like an obsessed. (i was very much younger) i couldnt afford it for some time because of the problem for an underage to pay for it online when there were no game cards.
So i did like all my friends and turned to wow. There were at least game cards at the local store for it. Then i returned for a month or two. Was accused by my new corp for espionage which wasnt true got depressed and quit Then i played around at wow again but i became insanely bored. So i came back for a month now and then and finally i came back for a while. Joined the rvb and later on another force i dont remember the name but those were good times. I was left behind in the second corp tough since they all went to low sec leaving me behind as the worst member skillwise. Then i quit and now i began again this time with a bunch of my friends and my brother. And thats how i came to play eve for the 5th or 6th time

After playing Siege Perilous on UO for about 11 years I just got tired of it and left mainly because they'd made the game way too Care Bear friendly, all the fun stuff you could do during the first couple of years was gone. I started Earth and Beyond in Beta, and ended up running the 2nd largest group on the Andromeda server. A bunch of online friends I knew from Earth and Beyond were in the Eve Beta. Earth and Beyond ended so I brought my entire "guild" over to Eve the first week after Beta, almost everyone came, about 30 people. We were all in Endless Corp. Within two weeks it was down to three of the original group, most everyone said the game was "too hard to understand" or "there are too many bugs".
Well, there were a few bugs back then but they weren't fatal. It was still a lot of fun. It was confusing to me not being able to "steer" my ship though. I missed doing the "booty dance" from Earth and Beyond in station, and I missed decorating my ship, all of which was very minor BS and unimportant. Game play in Eve had a much greater depth to it. The first ship I lost was my first cruiser when a missile I shot didn't hit the rat but instead hit the gate in Iro and Concord killed me. I remember when the game got to 5000 subscribers, we all celebrated.
For reasons I cannot go into here, I left around the time of the great missile nerf. I really missed having cruise missiles on my Caracal. Then I came back in 2006 after trying some other online games and being very disappointed with that daily level grind. I left again in 2008. After playing online from 2008 to 2011, I came back again now as there just isn't anything else out there with the playability of Eve mainly because of the complexity of Eve, the depth of Eve, and the fact you can be as good or as bad as you want to be in Eve. I hate games where they regulate every single little thing you do, and if you scam someone you're insta-banned. I do not pull scams myself but I'd fight for people's right to do so. The day they make the "8,000,000 isk shuttle" illegal in game, I guess I'll leave again. Long live people like the GHSC and players like Ashley Sky. |

I first time found out about eve back in 2009 (I think it was Empyrean age) At first I was mainly interested in popping ships but then I discovered all the weird and wonderful things that eve had to offer. After 3 trials I were hooked. Reading the stories of massive scams, market manipulations, everse-shakening wars and the eve influence map. But what really got me into eve was seeing a titan DoomsDay.

With the first hour of playing Eve, the interest grows endless what could be possible. My creativity, and Imagination grows , same as i ve start reading the first books of Isaac Asimov or Stanislav Lem 16 years before.
It pushed the interest in sci-fi. |

Early 2005 in the break room....
Buddy: "Hey man, you ever play any on line games, like EvE?"
Me: "Nope, never have played any on-line games."
Buddy: " Well you want to give it a try? I need some help, I need someone to shoot the rats while I mine."
Me: "Wait, how big are these f'ing rats?"
Buddy: "They can get huge!! and the bounties can be great"
Me: "Bounties on rats? WTF kind of game is this?"
At this point I am realizing that he needs help in some video game, to shoot hairy rats as he digs for pixels. So in my mind I am in a dark cave shooting hairy rats, while my buddy digs. I thought, meh, sure I like to shoot ****.
Buddy: "The game?!, Yeah it kind of complicated. But it is really cool, there is corporations, pirates, massive wars and bunch of other cool stuff."
Me: "Wait, how does rats and massive wars connect?"
Buddy: "Just give it a try, what is the worst thing that can actually happen?"

Way back around 2000 I played a space MMO few have probably heard of called Mankind. It was crap, but as a scifi junkie I had to try it. I didn't have money to subscribe to it, so after the 30 day trial it was over for me. I got my MMO fix with Ultima Online free shards for a while, then moved into WoW. I still missed the scifi genre though. I was looking for something else to play other then wow and a friend of mine told me about this weird scifi game called EVE. He told me him and his business partner ran a space station in eve making money, which they used to fund their pvp activities. He wanted me to join his corp and help them run the station. Not really being big on PvP, and not really wanting to spend money for yet another game, I decided not to join him. Eventually I decided to give it a go, though he had quit a few weeks earlier and could no longer get me into the corp he was in. Perhaps that was for the best though, as he was a goonie. The shame!

I was aware of the game in 2005. In 2006 I got my first credit card, so this was what really got me into EvE. The credit card. I could not get a trial for some reason unknown.
A space MMO site inspired me as I was a fan X-series. X-tension, X-2, etc... The single player environment was boring, and I looked for real human pirates and PvP.
I learnt that in EVE pvp favours numbers over tactics. Making it less likely to win in 1 vs more fight. I also learnt that missiles sucked.
