Hi Billy, a Jetcan is what is made when you Jettison cargo into space. When mining, Jet the ore and open the can that is made. Then when your lasers pull more ore in you just transfer it into the can. when you have filled the can up (it has 27k M3 cap) you dock to get your Badger and haul the ore in.

A jet can is what u get when u JET-ison something from ur ships cargo, doesnt cost anything, ARE not secure, and holds 27500 M3, if u dont rename it after Jetisoning it will disapear after bout 60+ min, Naming it makes it last 120+ min...... ----------------------------------------------- In the End , there can be only 1

mine with a weapon (mining laser) heavy ship then chagne ships and retrieve with a cargo (more cargo capable ship) saves time and maximises yield if you work as a pair one huals and does some inbetween mining while the other purley mines

And be aware that by design (somewhat after the fact but it's part of the design now) other players can take from the can without consequence. It's called ore theft and has been the subject of way too many threads here. Basically the game considers anything you jettison to be unwanted garbage and anyone can pick it up.
It's particularly worth nothing that the only way to ruin your reputation more than being a scum-sucking ore thief is to start a thread on the subject on these forums -- (Battle hardened miner)

Well how much does it cost and is it worth it or should I just get 2 level 2 cargo expanders for my osprey? (it has 3 level 3 miners)Becuase it is showing for 152k for just 1 giant container with only 3000 capatisy. Well my osprey with 2 level 2's could probably hit half of that. And I dont have any battle ships so what happenes if the system my cargo container is in gets hit by raiders? Well thx for the help.

Edited by: Nyphur on 15/02/2005 13:18:20 A jet can is a jettisoned cargo container. You jettison your ore and it floats there in a little free can with a huge internal space. You can fill that thing up (it holds about 27500m3 space) and then use your industrial to collect it, the result being that you get more ore in a smaller time and thus mine faster than mining in your osprey and docking to unload ore.
They aren't mobile. They float there on the same spot until removed. They are insecure. Anyone can come along and steal your ore, so mine somewhere quiet and make friends with the locals. Leave if there are ore theives about. They are free, created by your ship from scrap metal or something. Just jettison your ore and it goes out in one fo those cans. You then can't release another can for the next 2-3 minutes. But they only last for an hour or so at most, then they jsut implode and you lose everything in them. The trick to it is naming the can with the time you jettisoned it and when it gets to about 50 minutes, make another can beide it and open them both, then drag the ore from the first can into the second can. This is called refreshing the can.
Jet can mining is best done with buddies in low security areas with few people, the bonus being that they have better ore in lower security areas, too. Be careful if going into lower security areas, though, as there are nasty fellows about. Insure that ship and have a few million in the bank to replace it, just in case.
EDIT: EFB. Loads of people got there before me, but I think my post is still worth reading :P.

Jet cans are free. Just right click the item in your hold and select 'Jettison'.
Containers are something else entirely and a lot less useful (but they do stop ore scum-sucking ore thieves.
BTW:Have I mentioned that thieves are scum-sucking recently? Not that I've ever been a victim but still. They are scum-sucking. -- (Battle hardened miner)

technically ore theft is a part of the game and possible - guess its the risk of having the jet cans versus secure cans that i presume cant collect floating ores ?
Perhaps an intermediate solution would be allowing hte player to deply some combat drones to protect it for a short time while you travel between stations ?
Or longer term jet cans tha can last up to 2 hours ?
Gotta be careful though not to flame anyone else up so just take my contributions with a discussion approach only in mind.

whoever hsa been a victim should try it out sometiems at least then you see both sides of the coin. But finding a quite zone or doing mining in pairs (gang feature) could also be helpful ie while one leaves for the station another one can stand guard ?
A possible defensive strategy

Using a Jetcan for mining wasn't really what the Devs wanted them to be used for. So in doing so, you run the risk of it being stolen so no defense precautions will be added apart from the secure cans.

You dont have to purchase 'Jet cans' they are created each time you jettison somthing from your ships cargo hold. There is a delay of 10 mins or so if you want to have two or more, but once an item is jettisoned, you can drop and drag more items into it. They are not something you buy, they are easily destroyed and not secure by any standards. Right click on the can you have jettisoned and change the name, this enables it to last longer (2 hrs) before it self destructs.

Edited by: Elixier on 15/02/2005 13:29:36 N/m, the Giant Secure Container only uses 3k m3... I've never used one before because they don't hold much ore copared to a jet-can.

OKAY, DISCLAIMER:
When they say "unsecure" that doesn't mean you can buy a 'secure cargo container' and have the password work in high security systems (>0.7)
Jetcans, Standard cans, and Secure cans are all vulnerable to the 'waste-removal-specialist'
Best you mine in 0.9 systems and avoid the places where griefer ore thieves go to harrass lazy carebear miners in Yulai and other high trafficked 1.0 systems.
As for that "risk/reward" mantra, let me put it this way: that's BS. Lazy people don't bother about cost effectiveness. they're just LAZY. ______________________ Best darned links ingame and out (backup) |

What do you mean by 2 Cargo expanders?
You are going to fill your Osprey up then take the ore back to base? - You won't get anywhere doing that =D

First: grats on your Osprey, seems like you're ready to go ;)
now to your question: What Jetcans are and how jetcan mining works has beendescribed in detail already. Those jettisoned Cans your ship creates are fre and have a cargo space of 27m¦, are totally insecure in the means that anyone has access and can take out of them as well as imploding after a while (beeing more than one hour old).
An alternative are so called secure containers. They are available in different sizes from small to giant, with small having a space of mere 120m¦ and giant ones having space of 3900m¦. Their advantage is that you can anchor them in space. Once they are anchored, they will stay there forever until they are unanchored and scooped back up. When they're anchored, you can also password protect them, to counter unauthorized access. I don't have the costs for those in mind but a giant can was about 300k when I remember well. They are available from many different Stations, just do a region for secure Container and you should find them.
The major disadvantage of secure containers is that they're a bit of a hassle to work with. You can only anchor them if an area of 5km around the container is free of large objects or other secure cans. You can only anchor them in space with a security rating below 0.8 as well.

But i mine in .5 with lots of people and I dont really want to go far. No I have no m8's in an indy to pick uop for me. I just wouldent feel confortable elaving like 1 hours worth of work in space lol. I will equip my osprey with cargo expander untill I cant afford 600 k for a couple of secure containers in me 3 fav belts then i cant pik up with me indy.

read my post Billy, and decide yourself if Giant Secure Containers are worth it for you. I personally prefer jetcan mining, but that's mostly because a big barge fills giant containers in little more than one cycle^^
