The video wasn't bad. Although usually the key to getting more customers is making your current customers happy, or trying to. CCP you aren't doing this by a long shot. Yea people may enjoy your game, but 8 times out of 10 you're ****ing a lot of people off with the bs you pull. Instead of 'rethinking your advertising' why don't you 'rethink' how you treat your playerbase by not screwing us over in patches, changing important parts of the game like Jump Bridges for one, and nerfing the **** out of things because you haven't given the thought of balancing things enough time to begin with.
Yea you talked to the CSM but rolling out some stupid advertising campaign isn't enough. You might be offering candy, but you're still the shady man in the van.

I'll agree with this. I enjoyed the video. I'm not sure if that's in spite of or because of it's cheesy-ness.
Still, though. I can't deny that it makes me want to log in and X up. ___________________

Edited by: Sed Man on 08/07/2011 01:44:50 Australian laws are not too damn hard, you just have to differentiate your 'competition' from a lottery. The law is basically: if its a game of chance, then you have to apply for a permit. If its a game of skill/knowledge/ability, then you dont need a permit.
So if your awarding prizes based on a lottery type system, with no merit system applied, then you need permits. If awarding prizes is based on criteria that are not chance based, then you dont need a permit.
Considering this is a competition where content is submitted and a panel of people judge the best based on criteria which doesnt include chance, then Australians can participate.
Do a little more research before you go excluding Australians from competitions.
EDIT: I thought the vid was awesome and enspiring. Nice job.

I'm seeing a lot of "ARGLEWARGLEBLARGLE", so I'd like to offer a grain of sanity to a thread that is currently suffering from an overflow of butt hurt from other threads and topics.
As an Eve player, I have - more than once - shared a battle story with other people, Eve players or not. When you're talking with people who are use to "WoW size MMO's" where getting getting more than 16 people is like trying to herd cats through the middle of an interstate highway, the mention over "over 1,000 people on field" tends to make them stop and pay attention a bit more. Follow it up with the fact you actually lost/took something tangible that effects the universe, and you're somewhere no other MMO lets you go.
If you are put into a stressful situation, it can get your blood pumping (also known as Epinephrine) and can even make your hands shake. I've had it more than once in EvE and it's a feeling like no other in the MMO world; loss means something here and the impact it can have to you and others is massive. More than that though, there is pride you can associate with "being there", in taking part of something big and massive that helped to shape something larger than your self. ("Big and massive" describing the event, not the amount of people)
As far as "EVE is real" goes, the points and counter points all hinge on your definition of "real". Is it real because it can create or provoke experiences and emotions? You'll hold your own opinion, but ponder this;
An asteroid hits a planet in a far off galaxy, it destroys the planet (no life forms, don't panic) causing an epic array of cause and effects in that system. We, however, only see the slight feed back (maybe a slightly brighter dot in the sky, way down the road). Despite the massive implications that are involved, we take no part in it and feel no substantial effect from it. In that regard, EVE (and other virtual activities) provide a far more "real" event, as they impact our day to day lives on a much more frequent and deeper level. Equally, we impact EVE's events just as much.
EVE changes you, in my opinion, that makes it real. There is however the misconception that something being "real" means you take it too seriously. This however is not an issue of real, but rather of priorities. Assuming you can manage your priorities correctly so that "critical" events (work, sleep, making babies) are given enough time, it is no ones place to judge a (legal) hobby of it's worth. We are free to choose what we enjoy and how, so long as it adheres to the laws we agree to follow. (The laws you are ironically born into accepting, but that's another story all together.)
Originally by: "Optimus Prime" "Freedom is the right of all sentient beings."
tl;dr; Regardless of your stand point, the events in EVE happen, with real people (in this case, much easier to define) committing time, resource and knowledge to work together (or alone, but still as part of a whole) to move EVE into an as yet unknown future. If real is defined as something that you can effect and that effects you, EVE is defiantly real - far more than any other MMO.
If you don't believe so, this blog should have no effect on you what so ever, as your powerful logic driven minds would know that CCP is a business that needs money to run and has various different divisions that work on different aspects. Everyone knows and understands this, right? (Do you seriously want PR/marketing guys trying to work on EVE code/art? Seriously?)
Having said all this... he was over acting. ----- Cheesecake, Natures ultimate weapon.

Damn good idea to have a repository of good videos and stories, the stuff that went down in the great sandbox that was eve.
When it's all turns to **** it will be a good reminder of when things were good.
I'd suggest chribba host it though, then it can't be messed with. |

Edited by: St''oto on 08/07/2011 05:39:12 Ok, while I first have to say that I'm glad you guys are gonna start rewarding your playerbase for free marketing, (even though I still think it's partly evil, but I'm anti Big ben and co so don't worry about it.) why the hell do you want to let new users suffer so bad? I would be 100% on board with this and wouldn't fuss not one bit, if the game was a bit more functional. I seriously feel sorry for any newbie coming into this game due to this new marketing spl0it because the game is pretty damn buggy. Release a nice "Fix 100 million bugs" type patch and than deploy this marketing strategy. PLEASE! In fact stop with incarna and just dedicate one entire season's patch to complete bug fixes. No new content, no fluff, just pure bug fixes. I've been an undying and devoted EVE fan since I was 13 years old. I'm now almost 21. But FFS I'm starting to feel like I'm playing a damn beta. I'm tired of all my money going towards new expansions that only serve to garner the attention of new players! After all these years I think the vets deserve one damn patch dedicated to bug fixing and not "new player initiative."
I seriously can't even brag about EVE anymore to my clan mates.(Which they are probably happy with.) I've annoyed the hell out of them for 7 long years bringing you money! Now I can't do it. As they easily counter with "Fix the damn bugs and we'll play."
EDIT: Sorry for *****ing but I'm reaching wits end here.

The video was cheesy, yes, but I like what CCP is trying to do with this. EVE has always been about the community and the shared experience (see the "Butterfly Effect" video), and emphasizing/developing this side of EVE is the way to keep it growing.

Its pretty rich history running back for years, everybody loves the drama involved and it completely griefs the marketing team.

I am planning on posting 4 stories to help out, 2 corporate war stories, 1 pirate-linked story and 1 detailing the recent protest, this last one will have an image and emphasis that while both sides ****ed up (community and devs), the community as a whole was strong and united (not so common in MMOs) and that the devs rather slow but more than adequate response to the whole affair (I'll make sure to point out that a slow yet well thought out response is better than a rushed one that didn't not nuke concerns, just hope no one reads Zulu's devblog afterward :-S ). This last story may cast CCP in a poor light but it will point out to any new players that they are joining a community that is more than passionate about the game they play and maybe to put a lil' cherry on top I'll add in a link to one of Mittani's initial interviews regarding his activities with the GIA ( suffice to say that got me wanting to come back after I'd throughly burned out).

I like it, no scratch that I love it, as a historian I love the fact that (finally) there will be a place for all those memories and stories we build up over the years. I know I kept alot of the old stuff from my time in PIE and early CVA and before that when eve was just a beta.
It would be nice to know that things like that wouldn't just dissapear. Now if CCP releases an awesome blog about upgrades to our space game shortly after I'll be even more happier.
btw, I liked the video, cause even if its a little cheesy, I remember similar fights. |

It was a good Fictional Video, not a trailer,
a trailer shows at least something that you can do in game,
Worrying about buddy being shot up? why when they just wake up in station, collect insurance and buy another ship.
Gallente worth using in PVP? don't remember that being here.
And once again, Dog fight style combat? if only, they should have put it how it really is, both sides sitting in Maelstroms at 50km firing at each other while some annoying dude you can't understand is yelling on comms.
or maybe its just the fact that i'm in a bad mood this evening. still a good movie.. |

So I have 0 capabilities creating a computer rendered scene like "I was there". But I can make video games. More specifically I was thinking of a 2d top-down shooter of an event in the eve universe. I don't want to sell it or really release it any other way than through the website described in the CCP Blog. (the video made me want to do it.) I think it would be a fun little project. |

God almighty CCP, when will you start communicating a little between departements, the timing for this so bad its hillarious. Now you want us helping you in marketing using player created material, while you have a community that doesnt exactly fall on their knees in admiration for your work with Eve. You even want to reward contributors with the very currency that have a not small part in enraging the community.
Worst in that blog though is the prices:
"We'll also have two side voting contests on best still image and best video. There will be some free graphics cards and a high end PC as prizes for those"
Really, is this some bad joke. While CQ creates a lot problems with graphics cards, evenburns GPU's for some users u offer graphics cards as a price. I hope u have a lot of those in the bag :-).

Unless I am totally mistaken the goal (at least from the players point of view) is that there will never be something useful in the NeX store.
It is a vanity store, not a useful things store. |

CCP needs to commit its man power to fixing the game instead of building ôMicro-sitesö and trying to recruit new players. The video was far too cheesy and is likely to set many potential new players up for disappointment when they sign up for a trial (or worse, subscribe) and realize the game really isnÆt what they thought. Also, Aurum as a reward? Not sure that is any incentive for most players but I could be wrong. |
