How much aurum do you think they are going to give us? Thanks for the selective quote this completely ignores those of us that do not wish to take part in supporting MT in a subscription game. ~~~

Edited by: Zelphinine on 07/07/2011 18:36:21 Given my experience with an IRL friend who's currently on a trial account (he joined EVE when he saw the CQ; he's a big roleplayer and basically describes himself as 'the kind of player that CCP is trying to attract', he's been following the whole Hilmar/Zulu debacle since it blew up about a day after I sent him the invite, reading the forums, etc - actually interested in carrying on), you're still not going to get new subs.
Why?
Because NEW PLAYERS STILL SUCK. Not in the sense that they're awful people or anything, but in the sense that their chars can't do ****. All this 'EVE is Real' marketing BS won't change the fundamental fact that unless there's some way for new subs to get to the point where they can meaningfully contribute to things like FW, nullsec, etc without too much pain (iow not having to spend half a year training skills, yadda yadda) people are still gonna ditch the game before their trial runs out. Just like my friend. And he wants to like EVE. He wants to do things like run FW, go into nullsec, found corps with like-minded people, etc.
But he doesn't want to wait six months to be able to do any of that ****.
In his words 'you're not going to get many new players when most of them will have to spend the first few months of their game time logging on to change skills'.
You need more steak if you want new subs CCP. Not just sizzle.

The dude in the video was an inty pilot. You can start tackling for a fleet as soon as you can fit a point and mwd to a frig. An interceptor (like the Taranis the guy was flying in the vid) doesn't much longer to skill for.

/rant on.
It seems that about half of the people on this thread are just spoilt little children. CCP are doing some stuff. If you don't like it, just ignore it and it will make absolutely no difference to you, you can get on with playing Eve exactly as you do now or even RL. But no. Instead you have to come on and whine about the same old thing over and over. If you don't want to participate in the marketing just don't. If you don't want to buy a virtual monocle then don't. I don't care, but for the love of god will you STFU with the same old whiney rants, it's getting really boring. Surely you can't all be 13? If you care that much stop paying and Eve will be a better place.

This is such an awesome marketing concept that my mind exploded and I couldn't follow the class I attended after I read about it on my phone.
There's nothing too "new" about the idea in the context of social media marketing except that I think the scope of the EVE community will push it to the heights that CCP wants it to. I've seen other projects like this fall flat on their face because the community wasn't driven. The Aurum incentive is a really nice touch in this regard.
Yet to see the video but expecting greatness, etc.
edit: As a designer I don't agree with the positioning of the EVE Online logo on the site (at least relative to the borders of the screenshot) but that's just me. v0v

What are you, some kind of welfare leech looking for content handouts from the Man CCP?
Marketing a guy or girl trapped in the same closet as everybody else as a "reality simulator" is stupid. I don't think its too much of a stretch to ask for something used to sell MMOs to contain at least one social/multiplayer aspect to it.

I'm well aware of that. That doesn't change the perception however.
Plus pretty much every nullsec corp out there wants like 10+ million SP. I don't know about FW but he was certainly discouraged by how everyone was (apparently) running around in HACs and the like.
And I did tell him that nominally you could run tackle in PVP very quickly. That doesn't solve the 'You Suck' problem though. Like it or not, EVE is extremely unforgiving to new subs, both in perception and in reality.

So you want a website where the PLAYERS themselves get to state what EVE really is and how things really go on about?
Well.. its a daring project.. but i wouldnt call a smart move by any stretch of the expression..
It will become a museum of the games biggest BUGS and greatest failures.
You don't even need to trust me on that, just go ahead with the idea and see for yourselves =) ____________

I applaud this kind of effort. It's a great idea. The production quality of the video is, as usual, fantastic, but the script is a bit too cheesy. We players may sometimes talk with that kind of enthusiasm, but when the wording is so unrealistically bland, it comes across as artificial and cheesy. It's a bit over-generalized. Better to make it more personal and let in a little more game-jargon. People who are apt to play EVE are going to be able to read between the lines and won't be put off by a bit of mystery.
To you guys who are whining about the game: shut up. No one cares to hear your endless game-related complaints in this thread. Our whining belongs elsewhere. Like everyone else, I've got plenty of issues with EVE and CCP, but I still play because, on balance, it's still a great game. You're here for the same reason. The community is the best (and sometimes the worst) feature of the game. Expanding the player base is good for everyone. New players drawn in by the depth and quality of the community are the kind we want and this type of campaign is a great way get them.
It's not about mining or blasters or ships or stations. It's not about ISK or Aurum. It's about players. It's Corporations, Alliances, Interaction, Teamwork, Griefing, Scamming, Sweet Sweet Tears, Betrayal and Trust. That's what makes EVE "real". Lets get some more of that going.

I loved the trailer and the vast majority do to (the Likes/Dislikes on the vid).
As for the 'Eve is Real' thing, I love it too. Someone commented on that vid: Quote: No other MMO, or game, has made my heart race.
That couldn't be closer to the truth, for me anyway. Regardless of what people say here, we will always need new players, or else Eve will stagnate. This marketing approach seems like a good way to go about it.
Keep up the great work and doing what you're doing. People may throw a lot of hate your way on the forums, but they are a small fraction of the entire player base. Its just unfortunate that angry and displeased people make a lot more noise than happy and content ones.
You've got my sub until the end... |

You lost me at the underlined part.
If CCP wants to reward players with MT monies then don't participate if you don't want to support MT. Simple as that.
Personally I don't see any reason to demoralize the Devs any further than they already are. Just when they were hoping to be praised by the player base for months of hard work on thousands of lines of code, They got hit in the gut with the massage that MT is bad M'kay. Which was all managements fault for lack of messaging to the community.
For better or for worse, the Devs are the gate keepers of this game (not the owners IMHO) and I think they need a simple thank you right now.
As for CCP upper management, I think they need a swift kick in the balls!!!

What kinda jump was that? The interceptor runs in and acts as some kinda beacon so the fleet can short jump into range?
Just trying to understand the mechanics of that fight there. It all made sense up until everyone suddenly could warp up like that.

Warning, film student rant about a video game trailer ahead:
Great concept, but lacking in the force of execution. I'm sure the storyboard for this looked great, but the narrative did not come across forcefully enough to make the viewer care in the first 15-30 seconds. Referential, denotative concepts at the beginning of the trailer are too strong for the uninitiated (with EVE) to understand. It literally needs to be said "here's what we built, here's the stake," but that's glossed over.
You can laugh at me when my next video comes out in August because it certainly does not follow this principle, but an official trailer -- a tool for marketing -- absolutely needs to command attention.
Acting was overdone, but I can't fault the guy or even the person who directed him. This is the first time CCP has flirted with live actors, after all. One of the problems was that his emotional direction in telling the story was very disconnected with the visual storytelling, which was quite bland in the first 30 seconds. As such, it didn't feel like it got better aligned with the FiS bits until further into the video, even though it technically did align better during the battle. Rhythm of the crosscutting (technically montage) was perfect, but CCP has always been good at that.
If this is a story about the triangular player-character-event connection, the process by which those relationships were made was too direct. This is just a feeling I have. Obviously a capsuleer in lore cannot "feel [their] hands shaking" in battle, because they are their ship. That slight misdirection isn't what I'm talking about. It's more that the heart-thumping that occurs in PvP has to do with a sense of potential loss which wasn't communicated very well in the first place.
Good first step, but could use lots of refinement in the future. I loved the fact that this was apparently based on a real story (but then again it could be one of hundreds of similar Warp To stories). That should have been stated at the beginning of the video for more impact.
