Quite frankly what does it matter, it IS a role playing game. I know a guy that in table top games always plays a female, yet he is married with 3 kids and straight as a board. Role playing games allow you to experience what you are not.
Some people choose females characters because they know the truth is males will always give them things, and with a bit of RP, they can get anything within reason. On the day I began playing Everquest, I created a female Dark Elf Cleric and by days end, I had been given a magic mace, full suit of armor and about 20 gold, none of which I had asked or begged for. Now this is even after letting people know I was a male, so imagine if I had RPed a female.
As a good RPer I will always treat any female character as a female, after all it is character interaction, not player interaction. That's all you have to remember is that it is your Characters reaction, not yours.
So in the end, who cares what sex is behind the avatar, play it from your avatars perspective and enjoy the game.

I know of at least one confirmed female who is playing a male character (chatted on Team Speak with her and her husband (also an Eve player) at length)
I'm certain I've met other females playing male characters, including on TS, but I've don't pay very close attention.
And as stated, the real life Sacred Band were all well known Theban ***s. Only pairs of lovers were accepted for membership. They had a quite good reputation. Alexander even commented on there high quality as superior soldiers (after he killed them all in battle).

Want a quickie example on why some guys make female characters?
Take a look at the Amarr:
Males: 90% of mixes look over 80. Hideous creatures. Better wear a hood.
Females: 90% look like blazing hot 26yr old corporate types. Strong, capable people willing to make a place in the world.

The gender of a character matters only for a tiny box in a chat channel.
I have a male and a female character, any my actual gender is in no way a secret (not like I could keep iy on TS anyway).
Generally, reguardless of the gender of the avatar, I use male or gender-neutral pronouns unless someone actually says that theyre female. ------------------------------------------------------------------

Theyare like OMG thats wrong women shouldn't play this game its only for guys. I think that is so wrong for a guy to say. I know several women that play EVE and I ahve to say we love the game too. And in my opion if a guy wants to have a female character let them. If a woman wants to play as a guy let them . Come on people this is just a game. We are supposed to be having fun. So lets all just forget about whose a Real man or Real woman. Pod people, mine, sell, mine do missions, but lets not argue over the sex of a character.

Originally by: Roy Focker Last night me and my corp members were talking about males playing as females. Well, we had received a applicant who was "female". Since I am in second command I told him that if the "female" is male cut him from the corp.
Personally, I think something is really wrong with a guy choosing to play a female character online. Games like Tomb Raider and ONI are different because your required to make that choice. I guess I am just tripping.
I would like know you GUYS thoughts and that includes you "cross dressers" too.
In beta I played as Vash, then after EVE came out I made another guy, I didnÆt like him, so I made this toon. I didnÆt do it for free stuff, or to pretend to be a girl, I never once said I was, I even talked about shaving cream one time in chat and the effects of being in free fall would have on it. Does it seem like IÆm playing a girl? I have a girl toon because as I was making it I was like, wow sheÆs hot, and played the game with her. Why are you male in the game? Is it because you like to look at guys, is because you are a guy, so you naturally assumed that you should be a guy in games, or something else?
Let people play whoever/whatever they want without interfering, it is not a big deal.
I think there is something wrong with you for not letting people freely express themselves. If you kick someone out of your corp for playing a different gender you are limiting their freedom of expression.
As for guys giveing girls free stuff that is really creepy. I mean do they think they will get sex, or something. I block those people.
Would it upset anyone to much if I make my main and alt ******* lovers?

I stopped reading at page 4 so forgive me if this has been said before.
In some cultures, as early as 30 years ago and long to the ancient times, female roles have been played by men. It said nothing about their sexuality and in fact was an accolade to how great their acting abilities were to pull off a role like that. It is only in recent times that we have come to attribute this type of thing with sexual deviancy. I believe it has something to do with the way society is progressing and the sad state of some of my fellow geeks who believe that they truly have the ability of getting together with another person that plays this game.
About half of the characters I play are men and half are women. What makes me choose is the story I want to create with the character as a center, not whether or not I can make the acquaintance of another person on here. I have a fiance, if I want companionship, I go to her.
I think that it is wrong to discriminate against someone because their toon does not match who they really are.

donÆt really care if they r male-female- but personally I prefer a male pic (***?)
It donÆt matter, only a game, should be able to choose how u want ur char to look like without petty comments- after all, itÆs not like u been out drinking and dancing only to take her? home to discover (u work it out) then u would have reason to complain. As for in game itÆs just petty-

When I started this game I created an character. Please note: CHARACTER. Not an alternate me, not a surrogate self.
Male or female, the idea of an RPG (even a MMORPG) is to create someone different from yourself so that you can interact with people in a made-up universe. Its not Real. So why the heck would you get wound up about someone playing a female character when they are male?

I have a mental disorder. I also dress up all lace and wear a whip with a pink fluffy pompom at the tip round my neck before I start playing Eve
Seriously... whenever I open that charsheet I'd rather look at a girls face because I enjoy looking at girls faces. They're simply not as damn ugly as male avatars
I couldn't care less if anyone has a problem with that tbh. If you think I am somehow less of a man because of that then I invite you to meet me in RL so we can 'talk' about your screwed up attitude

Because often in Eve people arent RPing, they are just gaming, and the trans-genders still pretend to be female to get better treatment (wether or not they actually get better treatment is irrelevant, the fact the person is being intentionally deceptive to get this treatment is the issue).
I see nothing wrong with playing a female occasionally, however most people that do play females play females almost exclusively, and these people I do think are repressing some real subconscious trans-gender issues.
If you need to look at a chick while you play, put a picture up beside your monitor and don't look at your avatar.
I see nothing wrong with coincidentally playing a female, I do see something strange about intentionally exclusively playing females (when you are a male).
Females playing males often do so to avoid harassment, so is a completely separate issue.
(I appologize if anyone is offended that I think they are strange for playing transgen.)

Ah, but then you're getting into the question of _why_ someone's playing a female character.
Eve is one thing, but 'roleplay' is a different one. Choosing a female character because the avatar is nicer, or because you get more free stuff is one thing.
In my experience, the majority of male roleplayers, who play a female character either:
a) roleplay a bloke with 'F' checked on the character sheet, rather than 'M'.
b) go so extremely OTT in playing the 'woman they'd like to meet' and horribly ham up the gender.
The former picked a female character for 'eye candy'. The latter are 'usually' not getting enough.
Of course, I'm now diverging off topic, since the roleplay side of Eve would seem to be mostly optional. Whatever avatar you've got, fine. Cyber for isks, fine. IC flirting, who cares. As long as both parties are prepared to accept that whilst the character your talking to is one gender, the player behind it may be another, there really is no problem. You've just got to remember that online gaming is predominantly male.

Suppose it all depends on ones intention when playing the game.
I would question a males reasoning if he made a female charcater and when online he adopted the personality of a female.I.e flirting with the blokes and inviting them round for 'coffee'... whilst wearing his wifes underwear
However if he is a bloke who just fancied a female avatar then so what.... im a 6 foot 2 bouncer (a damn ugly one 2) and im certainly all man...
My main problem is that there is not enough attractive women behind the attractive female characters! - I think ccp should recruit those Icelandic models to play the game!
