I've got another great idea! Why don't the CCP just shut down the server, announce that they shut the server down, fix the darn problem, then announce the server is fixed.
Oh, wait. That would take all the fun out of complaining, wouldn't it?

UPDATE: Servers are not going down.
SO if its not the servers then what is it then? Loyal Players would like to know whats going on and would be less likely to be upset if someone would just tell us whats going on, PLEASE!!

Analysis: Something is ****** up.
Justification: 1. Tranquility IP address: 157.157.139.10 2. myeve.eve-online.com IP address: 157.157.139.201
Now, a trace to both IP's ends at the iceland-telcom gateway, which apparently is firewalled, not uncommon. Another tidbit, these are part of the same route as advertised to the Global internet, indicating the ISP is handling them as a whole (and probably off the same connection), as shown by a show ip route on a global route server:
route-server>show ip route 157.157.139.201 Routing entry for 157.157.139.0/24 Known via "bgp 65000", distance 20, metric 0 Tag 7018, type external Last update from 12.123.1.236 3d14h ago Routing Descriptor Blocks: * 12.123.1.236, from 12.123.1.236, 3d14h ago Route metric is 0, traffic share count is 1 AS Hops 4 Route tag 7018
This indicates that since the forums are online (myeve.eve-online.com), that the problem is internal to their local network, not at the ISP level.
Now, also given that they haven't had to restart the server (they did restart at least once, but well after the problems started occuring), my guess on the problem is that the server itself is being attacked, possibly a syn flood, but otherwise a simple DoS. It isn't a saturation event either, i.e. one that saturates their ISP, otherwise the forums would be unusable at the same time. And yes, I do work on networks for a living.

5 hours now...
Time to announce a "early" downtime and FIX it?
Dunno what you have to do - but.. do it
If it got to go down for 1 hour, 5 hour, 10 hour - I don't really care. But this yo-yo thingy is soooo annoying.

Ok heres the inside scoop.
At or around 17:00 eve time, 'Rexty' the hampster was no more.
It would seem that Eris Discordia, brought her cat into the office, which then excaped. After frantic searching the cat was found, and the remains of Rexty.
Unable to find a replacment hampster at such a late hour it was decided that people would spin the wheel manually, untill the morning. TomB was to take the first shift.
Oveur and CCP Hammer were to replace TomB later in the evening. They were last seen heading to the local pub. We can only assume that they are 'incapacitated' and will not be returning.
The server problems are a result of TomB drifting in and out of sleep. It would seem that while Oveur was kind enough to bring TomB a coffee perk, he did not think to bring enough coffee for more then one pot.
The fate of the server now rests with CCP Hammer and Oveur returning to the office in a drunken stupper.

The (can't say it here) test servers are always up.
Can we put the main game on the (censored) test servers and let the test game run on the P.O.S. (no, that does not mean Privately Owned Station) run on the Commodore 64 servers that currently run the game? I am getting really tired of this, and tired of PAYING for this.

From where I am sitting, it looks as if the network connection is having trouble - akin to your isp having issues. From my perspective the connection dies at the router named iceland-telecom1.tsd.cw.net [166.63.214.198] in a traceroute.
Hopefully they will have it sorted out fairly soon.. I would really like to get my 1st real character created and start playing since i just signed up.

We regret to inform you that the database server along with back up database servers were destroyed when an employee set off the fire sprinkler system.
We will gladly give you a brand new ibis with one unit of tritanium ore as a consolation for the loss of all experience, property and isk.
Have a nice day.

Nope, a trace to myeve ends at the same point, and this post is proof it is working fine. It always stops there. The test server is on a distinct network, and is working fine however, but I think this is an attack on the servers.

How is it that CCP still has no information about how long it will be before things are back to normal? Posted - 2005.03.25 23:03:00 was the time of the original post. No offense to the moderators, but wtf has there been no GM in here apologizing or issuing an official statement. Yes, its a network prob, we know that, but damn, why keep bringing the game back up if its just going down 5 mins later? You do realize that people will attempt to do missions, NPC hunt or PvP and get killed and be more ****ed. Figure out the prob, let us know the ETOR & exact cause, reimburse us a free day and leave it down until the prob is resolved. Why is this such a difficult thing? And please, save all your flames for ccp, I dont need to hear from other players that i'm being unreasonable here.

Have some patience guys. Take a break, get laid, have a life, call your mom, save the world, have a pepsi, or plan to take over the world.

In which case they are both filtering icmp and udp packets at that iceland router, since both stop at that point... Do you know the IP of the test server?
