What is your goal in playing the game? You really need to answer this before you decide if it better or worse.
There might not have been advanced learning skills, battleships, etc. however this was the same for everyone. Much of this new stuff is just makes the new player feel like they are farther behind, training learning skills for weeks just so you can learn faster isn't really most people's idea of fun. The skill training system pretty much guarentees an old player will always have more skills than a new player and this will bother some players.
If you mostly are interested in how large of a number you can get in your wallet or how many ships you have in your hanger then it is most certainly easier now.

Can we nip this umpteenth new player/old player equal opportunity thing in the bud this time ?
One thread a week on it is quite enough. _______________________________________________

Older players are always leaving, while new players are always joining. The sooner new players realise this and learn to focus more on developing themselves and worry less about what others around them might be doing, the better.
Anyone who understands that Eve is a long term game will understand the value of training their learning skills early in their career. For people who want it all and want it now, fire up Doom and see how long you can play with IDKFA enabled before it gets boring for you (so I couldn't think of a more modern example, sue me ).
Many older players these days will describe how they miss that feeling of wonder and awe at the universe when they undocked for the first time. In Eve, the thrill is in the journey itself just as much as in reaching its end. So sit back and enjoy the ride.

I play for fun. It doesn't bother me that there are players out there who have more SP or Isk than me, it doesn't bother me that I can never catch up to them; it just gives me something to aspire to :)

yeah, I hit the wrong button should have been a reply to this thread..
http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=180705
However the general idea holds for many other threads as well. This game is constantly changing, often with much whining on both sides of any change. I think deciding what really are good changes or bad changes really requires you need to figure out why you even play in the first place.
Fun might be the #1 reason, but what is fun? Gatecamping? NPC hunting? Collecting rare items? P.v.P? Mining? Having a big wallet? Having lots of tech2 bpos? Trying to find out what is and isn't an exploit by pushing game mechanics to the limits? Interaction with other players.. trying to manage large organization or trying to infilatrate as a spy? Being the best in some area, i.e. best raven pilot, best pirate, best fleet commander?
I think there is wide range of opinions on what is fun and as a result the devs have a very hard job in keeping most the players happy, or at least somewhat pacified.

RP in an MMO.
As hard as it is in EVE to ever do anything RP-related, it's 10x harder in any other MMO currently out there.

If EVE would have a goal, you could achieve it, you would then get bored and move to another game.
EVE is endless, which makes it kinda addictive. Also the content is dictated and created by the community not CCP, which gives you endless options to influence it. _____________________________________ Dead or Alive

I pay to play Eve, to have fun. Not to sit at a belt for hours on end so somebody else can get a BS. I fiddle with alot of things do some research, and some manufactureing. I do some missions I do have tree level four agets all at 10+, but I dont use them. I perfer takeing my BC or BS on a level three, depending on what they are of course. My goal is to have fun. When the fun ends so does this 2year old account.

To actually learn enough so I stop getting blown up constantly.
For example, I actually took some iniative and put some ECM target scramblers on my hauler the other day.
I came across 2 gate campers at a gate in 0.0, they both target me, I lock on and click the jammer, and some window pops up talking about me commiting a criminal act by jamming them. At this moment it was jam or be killed so I clicked yes.
The other guy proceeds to start shooting. I make it to the gate alive, and click jump, but some window pops up saying something about not letting me jump cause im a criminal or something, and before I could finish reading it I was dead =/
I take 1 step forward and 2 steps back =/
