I know I'm the millions noob to make this complaint. But not fussed.
I see barely 40,000 players online on weekends and half that number during the week.
One of the oldest, and I would have to say more interesting, MMOs seems to be stuck with low numbers whilst new comers like WOT etc grow substantially, the old rivals like WOW and LOTRO go from strength to strenth.
I've been playing a month and I couldn't put my finger on why.
Now I know.
Look, I took the bare minimum equipment with me and I was flying in a Vexor that I could afford to lose so I'm not bitter about the loss.
But on my very first time exploring outside high sec, the fact 3 idiots are spending their time at midnight on a Sunday next to a jump gate in a 0.3 sec system in the middle of nowhere and have nothing better to do than take out a crappy vexor in 3 shots then podkill the owner means there are clearly a lot of tossers playing this game.
And if the mechanics allow them to scare off new players, then 40k peak numbers is all there is going to be.
I was warned, I read all the reports, I am not surprised or shocked. I had just hoped things weren't as bad as everyone made out. Perhaps it was just bad luck and 9 times out of 10 I would have been fine. But I doubt it.
I'll keep playing for a while but all those whining that hi-sec should be nerfed should know why no-one goes null sec. I suspect most of us are more than happy to leave to tossers to their onanism and we'll fly space ships for fun instead. |

don't think someone has to be upset to point out that low sec gate camps keep a lot of high sec people in high sec.

and that has nothing to do with "the tossers" in low sec. the nature of low sec is what keeps people in high sec. "100k for notifications of stupidity, i love this bounty system." |

People in highsec lack experience in dealing with these kind of things. Anyone who has lived in 0.0 for a while develops habits and behaviors which allow them to function in the area of space they live in. Namely- assuming every gate is camped whether intel shows so or not and having plans already in place with how you are going to react.
These things become second nature to 0.0 pilots and when we go through low sec its actually astonishing how much easier it is to move around from the simple fact that you cant use bubbles, cant aggress on gates unless you can tank the sentry guns and realistically the only way to get caught on a gate in low sec is by being asleep at the wheel, a number of high scan res, sensor-boosted insta-lockers, smartbombers, or just plain old lack of experience. Like what happened here.

What ships where they in? What system was it? Was it the transitional gate from high to low? Did you check map statistics for the route in advance?
The reason high-sec dwellers tend to think gatecamps are EVERYWHERE is because they naturally find their way to low sec from a hub system and end up jumping into the most notoriously camped systems as a result.
Just because it happened once does not mean it happens all the time. Learn which entry points are quieter or learn how to slip through gatecamps should you find yourself caught in one again. While they are indeed rather lame and a pain to deal with, there are often ways of dealing with them. (a¦á_a¦â) ~ (my spaceblog) http://getoutnastyface.blogspot.co.uk/~ (a¦á_a¦â) |

Should I mention I've been uncerimoniously ganked more in other games than I have in EVE? It's true. I remember one game where I left the Newb area and got ganked almost immediately, another where I got ganked every time I tried to enter open PvP areas. Usually by someone a good 2-60 levels higher than me with Epic gear.
Okay, so it hasn't happened that much, but then I haven't been ganked uncerimoniously in EVE all that much. Gone out and entered a-maybe-1v1 and got ganked by 2-3v1, gone to Lowsec and sat on a gate until the locals showed up and ganked me, gone to Null and run about whilst the locals came at me from both sides of a gate and got ganked, gone to Null and got Interdicted, bubbled, etc.. and got ganked, etc...
But to be honest, the amount of times I've been uncerimoniously ganked amounts to maybe 2-3 times. The rest I was eiher waiting for it to happen, or looking for it, or otherwise expecting it. ..I count any attempt at solo PvP as looking to get ganekd btw; just to clarify matters a little.
I'm also inclined to beleive 40000 players active and/or online at once is rather substantial compared to some games. I think when I left AoC it was something like 1500-4000 across several servers. STO was probably less than that, with barely greater than that number in Subscribers, SWtOR was probably less active and online, with about double the number of Subscribers.
AEON idk, never paid attention and it wasn't worth looking, Rifts I couldn't tell you but I'd estimate maybe 10-20K max across all their servers at the time, and the others all seem similar. The primary difference would be Subscriber count vs. active player count. As far as Active players goes, I'd say EVE does pretty well.
I'd also estimate that it wouldn't do half that well without PvP; contrary to your opinion, but I could be wrong.
Funny thing is, I've tried almost every MMO out there and EVE is the only one that held me. Many don't last a week or two, and none more than a couple months at best. I usually drop off when I come to the conclusion that any further advancement requires far too much grind, and/or necessitates me being a zombie running with the horde.
Oh yeah, and I never was fond of Zerging, which is often a requirement for advancement past the base levels if you join a group, and there is always a point where you 'must' join a group. zubzubzubzubzubzubzubzub |

Well, the tossers are at least a little smarter than NPC drones, and more predictable (hence the low population).
Now, there are many ways to deal with this, and you will learn these ways eventually if you bother to do so. Surely you will be made fun of for your post, and may choose to try again, or not. Your prerogative.
I blame the gate mechanics more than anything. The only reason why you can get three players sitting on a gate in the middle of nowhere on a Saturday night, is because of gates. Also, "middle of nowhere" can still be what I like to call a "gank pipeline". So while there is nobody out there for the most part, a lot of people passing through.
For a while now I have made, and will make once more, the argument that gates and the mechanics around them, such that favors this type of "having nothing better to do" gameplay (which is crap game for BOTH sides of the interaction, BTW) is what forms a "Great Wall of Carebear" around highsec. There are bears on both sides of this wall for while low sec has players who kill everything that moves for no reason (and then comes to the forums to complain about the low population in lowsec) , further out there are intel network and campers to ensure that the nullsec systems, most of them deserted, remain so that lone ratters in carriers can do so without interference.
(Having used wormholes to get to deep null, I have seen lone carriers ratting - you know who you are)
If ships could dial in system to system like in some of our favorite sci-fi movies, we would see the entire playing field open up. The gate camp is replaced by the combat patrol and those who can't run scans and hunt for their prey while semi-AFK will have to find another game.
Whether such capability is done by module or whatever, is not the topic. Certainly if by module, then the fleet that uses gates to have that extra combat module may have an advantage over the fleet that used the warp drive module (or whatever they call it). So it's not like the precious gate camp will be lost to all those leet PVPers.

I was on my way to the Christmas event with newbie ship and foolishly thought I would cut half of the travel distance by taking shortcut through lowsec. I ran into a gatecamp, about twelve strong, and my Ibis was blasted to small bits. Fine, no problems, it wasn't ship I was using much anymore. Then I got message from the Comedian-In-Charge: I would have to pay 75 million ISk or they would pod me. As my character is about month old, and I haven't spent any money on PLEX (and I have spent ISK as it has come), the demand just made me laugh. In fact, it paralyzed me with laughter to the point where I failed to heed to the order to stop and thus they promptly podded me. I did get to the event with another ship, so there was no harm done. I am just warmed by the thought that low-sec has such enterprising comedy groups. |

if there's one thing e-uni and to a lesser extent TEST have taught to the whole of eve, is that 40 noobs in rifters can, and will, obliterate any "elite pvper" in a 4 billon tengu, humiliate over and over any "elite pvp" corp that dares to wardec them, hilariously lose dozens of 10m ships while inflicting loses ranking in the billions.
one can only imagine what they could do to a half assed lowsec gate camp, specially with he new t1 cruisers.
most gate camps would crumble to 5 - 8 thoraxes/ruptures regardless of SP difference.
and even if they cant break the gate cap, so long everyone is shooting the same target, anything dies, even under reps. just aim for the shiny, and enjoy the the sweet nectar leaking out of the pirates tear ducts when they come to the forums to ***** about getting gang raped by 10 people.

Low-Sec is very easy to travel around without getting caught in gate camps. IF you do a little reading and practice in High-Sec before venturing out.
Null-Sec is a different story with the added ability to use warp distortion bubbles.
I would suggest the OP take this as a learning experience instead of a chance to whine.
Learn some tactics by using the many guides that provide information about how to fit, fly and survive in Low-Sec.

You honestly should be able to see outside before you undock and/or jump. Nothing against gate campers/station huggers, but considering the technology and the fact that we have "traffic control", you'd think you could at least get a dscan from your out gate, or look out a window or something before you undock. Jumping/undocking blind seems a bit stupid.

Learn from this mistake op.
Next time try scouting your jumps, check the in game map and look for high activity on ships and pods going boom, traveling with corp or alliance mates, and remember to never blind jump to any gate, d-scan it first.
And also learn that no matter how diligent about all of the things above, eventually you will get caught, and you will go boom.
Eve will punish people that blindly jump in and have no clue, but the more you know of the game the better it will be. |

You learned a very valuable thing from this experience. Always use a scout if you can. Low-sec combat is common at gates. Things are usually not this bad but I suggest you get a friend to scout with you, and always pack a prop mod so you can burn back to the gate if there is trouble. Also pods align instantly so if you're going to explode make sure you warp to a planet. An easy thing to do is to add the sun to your overview so you can make sure you have something to warp to. Don't write other sec status areas off just yet, bring friends next time you go . npc alts aren't people |

If that's what you're seeing, it's time to go to the eye doctor. At EVE's peak time, I'm seeing around 45k during the week, 50k+ on the weekends. The population has been steadily increasing over the past few months. Get a clue.

Then what are you doing here?
Yes it sucks to get blown up in gate camps, not so much because you lose a ship, but because there is nothing you can do about it and it has nothing to do with pvp.
If you can handle losing one vexor then stay out of low-sec, if you keep flying there you are going to lose a lot more. GÇ£The best way to keep something bad from happening is to see it ahead of time, and you can't see it if you refuse to face the possibility.GÇ¥ |

I got sniped from 150km as I was approaching the gate to jump. Oh yes this was before warp to zero for manual flight and I didnt know about the map intel - pilots undocked and in space, ships destroyed etc- what I do remember is the pilots name frankinator or sometuing like that.

Janus: I have been playing just over a month now so we aren't that far apart in experience. I have to say though... if you were smart enough to anticipate all the factors above, why did you stick your hand in the meatgrinder anyway? Granted, many times their won't be some putz on the other end of the handle ready to grind your fingers off, but jeez, if you want to get around in EVE you need to help yourself by doing some homework ahead of time. There are plenty of good guides in the Evelopedia to get you started so you can be a bit more prepared the next time. For now, my answer to you is you shouldn't have been there in the first place. There are plenty of areas and pursuits in EVE for a new player to experience without swimming with the sharks.
I will use this opportunity to talk about what I think is the actual issue at hand here- getting gate-camped and popped is just one of many symptoms. I honestly think CCP is aware of the issue of how to introduce new players to EVE, but progress is slow. Due to the nature of EVE Online, you don't want to spoon-feed new players too much or they end up with unrealistic expectations and attitudes about the game. Not enough and they aren't properly prepared for what lies ahead. I don't claim to have the answer, but it would be nice if whole of EVE's tutorials and introduction better prepared new players and laid out common EVE concepts in a logical manner with a minimum of confusion. Once you get the initial concepts down, you can start to take the "training wheels" off and broaden the scope.
At the end of the day though, humans will be humans I suppose- some of them just have to discover the truth first-hand, regardless of what has been laid down before. We aren't about to change human nature anytime soon!
Anyways Janus- I hope you stick with it, you just need to adjust your viewpoint on EVE and do some reading. AR "We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time." T. S. Eliot -á-á |

It never hurts to try in a dedicated gate camp. For every 10 that pass through maybe 1-2 will have the 75million isk to pay you. That less than one month character could be an alt, it could be someone who bought plex and sold it, they could just be good at this game and have a bit of cash to splash. All in all, business as usual
I hardly do any PvP, yet I live in nullsec and have found the best way to navigate is to assume all gates are camped and bubbles, at least in hostile/neutral systems.

In WOW you would have respawned a short distance away with everything you had still on you. That's because WOW is for toddlers and lazy un-intelligent gamers. No risk at all, and just enough mouse clicking to keep you awake enough to eat burgers and jack off. Well, admittedly our newbies come out a lot faster. Then again, they also get blown up a lot ...

Remarkably similar to my first loss, except mine was a shitfit Caracal.
5 years later and the number of ships I've destroyed breaking up gatecamps now vastly outnumbers the ones I've lost to gatecamps. Largely because I've learned to spot camps on the map before jumping in and experience has taught me to predict the gate that is camped so I can get in to assess the situation safely. I'm even -9.9 for what that's worth, campers wouldn't even take gate guns to shoot me. I rarely camp but when I do it's because I'm not able to get a fight and sitting in one spot for a long time being shot by gate guns is a great way to get others to take a run at you.
From your description you're even in a better spot than I was at the time, I couldn't afford another Caracal and had to get back into the Kestrel I had gotten as a reward from my first 10 noob mission chain. So you can leave in which case don't feel bad you join the thousands of others who couldn't hack it either or you try again and see what you can really do in the one place that really lets you see what you're made of. Either way this game will teach you about yourself. |

Dont worry OP. According those people, gatecamping is the TRUE PVP in game. Those are the same people that constantly complains about extremely high risk in low/null compared to rewards. Ironicaly, this high risk was made by gamers themselves (player driven).
Also you can see several posts in this thread that just confim this. Gheto thinking that shoot what moves is the way of low/null. Gangsters, who living in the woods are complaining that there is high criminality in the woods and demands higher rewards.
There were several ideas how to restrict (not remove) those gatecamps in low sec... Man, you should see that emo rage and flamewars from those ppl

I'll keep playing for a while but all those whining that hi-sec should be nerfed should know why no-one goes null sec. I suspect most of us are more than happy to leave to tossers to their onanism and we'll fly space ships for fun instead. (Having used wormholes to get to deep null, I have seen lone carriers ratting - you know who you are) If ships could dial in system to system like in some of our favorite sci-fi movies, we would see the entire playing field open up.
Agree that gates are bad design, but a design that would require MAJOR work to change into something better. The scanner system would have to be completely revamped for starters.
I would be happy with just a bit of reiteration of the gates, such as entering and exiting with speed, sort of like Mass Relays in the Mass Effect series. Would also eliminate the need of gate cloaking, as you would be loaded and ready before you would actually land on grid with the bad guys waiting at the gate. As a bonus CCP could eliminate the awkward loading screen when jumping systems and replace it with a warp-like effect. |

and you decided to go there by yourself, with no intel or support of any kind, and subsequently had a bad time?

Peak times have nothing to do with who or who may not be in a system you wish to go in. Creating a forum topic on you having your cherry popped in low sec will only garner others telling you to grow up because we've all been through it. It's actually being ganked by Pirates that got me into the shady side of Eve in the first place.
There is a certain power said players have over a victim when they see nothing but flashy red screaming at them as they foolishly realize they are done for. Your pod my friend is just another part of your mistake. You should have been spamming ANY celestial to save your pod as soon as your Vexor was fried.
There is also various ways to avoid or elude gatecamps. One is a cloak. Two is sending in a scout first. Three is looking at the map and seeing how many active pilots are in a system within the last half hour or ship kills when planning a route. It's all very elementary and simple if you plan right.
The fact you jumped blind into low sec while also IGNORING warning signs just proves to me you are careless and wreckless. You gambled and you lost. And see? Some of us gritty blood thirsty "tossers" as you put it are nice enough to give you three simple tips on how NOT to be a complete idiot.

Instead he should have been flying a T1 frig with a cloak and all sorts of prop mods. The first thing you do, when you go into unknown areas, is scouting.
Sure, you'll probably die to a smartbomb sooner or later. And maybe you'll get caught in a camp on some occasions. But you'll learn how to move around in dangerous space. If you know how to get along on your own, then you can bring in other ships.
Ofc, you also can just get into an experienced group with a good fleet commander and learn by flying with them. Things will not change in one respect though: Scouting takes up most of the time you're out there. |

[/quote]=
I agree with this its a good idea. People complain about miners and people who never venture in to low sec,But the thought of sitting by a gate waiting for some inexperienced player to wonder in and pod him does nothing for me, i would rather mine are build stuff are run missions any day of the week .Just seems like a cheap trick to me but its part of EVE .I would venture in to low sec more if i did not have to be sent down a tunnel with a potential death trap at the end are having to spend time to find worm holes etc.
Would be much better if you come out in some random locations in the system and had to be scanned and chased down instead.I can understand why the gate camp death annoys so many new players and turns many players away from the game it leaves a bitter taste in your mouth )).Unless things change i will still be clicking on avoid on every low sec system unless there is no option. |

What is laughable about that? You had implants for around 50 mil. in your head. You could have made a deal but refused and paid for it. The only thing i see here is business as usual. |

I think the biggest problem is that it takes a long time to train and get established in the game. That coupled with the fact you don't interact so much with each other as you do in other games (i.e. character face to face).
I would think a lot of people don't really understand the PvP in EVE.
New players are small fish in a big sea full of sharks.
New players lack the skills (trained) and the experience of playing the game so players that have played for a long time have a huge advantage in PvP, well PvE as well for that matter.
Games of the type like WoW, most people can get to max level within a month then it's just gear and experience. They're not as involved as this game can be, meaning those games are easier to play.
You can't really compare this game to games like WoW as they're a different style of game, but of course that does not stop people from trying.
So as a small fish do you survive until you can compete with the sharks or do you leave the big sea. Personally I find games that are challenging are generally better. |

I am talking about smallscale pvp with less then 5 ships involved where others are just better, i do a mistake or where i just get outplaned. Excuse me for asking, but what the hell did you think you were going to find in lowsec other than people who want to shoot you? If you weren't expecting other players to shoot you then you sure picked a funny place to fly to.
Also you might not be aware of this OP, both because you're new and because you're clearly intellectually subnormal, but you aren't entitled to not be blown up. If someone wants you to explode and you're not willing or able to stop them from making that happen then guess what? You explode. Don't want to explode? Figure out how to stop it from happening or find some buddies who already know.
"I got blown up because I flew solo unscouted into a dangerous place I've never been before for no reason." Is not something wrong with the game. It's something wrong with how you are playing it. |

I did actually answer your question in around about way, with the mention of blob warfare. If you're on your 2006 character then it's very unlike a character of less than 6 months killed you, without help.
Problem with PvP at the start is that most people want newer players for jamming duties as it's fairly quick to train. |

The solution is already being implemented in the form of organizations like E-Uni, TEST, Goons, and the countless smaller organizations that are willing to do a little babysitting, guiding newbies through the rude awakenings like the OPs situation, and teaching them to win through strength in numbers.
True, many new players fail to find help, try to play the game solo, and quickly begin to feel overwhelmed and subsequently quit. These are usually the types that you wouldn't want to play with anyway. Nothing needs to be nerfed to satisfy this demographic. Join the Revolutionary Front and liberate New Eden from it's stuff.

As someone who has spend a significant amount of time, both as a carebear and the potential victim of gate camps and as a gate camper myself, I can safely say that anyone who falls victim to a gate camp, clearly hasn't understood what lowsec or nullsec is there for.
They are there for people to blow each other up. If you jump in and then get blown up, then you didn't take the necessary precautions to stay alive. A scout would have done it, or even taking a small fast ship in would have done it. Friends always help as well, this is an MMO after all.
If you die in lowsec or nullsec you never have any reason to be annoyed at another player. Because that is what null and low are there for. Killing each other.
Also, the implication that Eve will not thrive the way it is is frankly idiocy. Eve is thriving. It is literally the only MMO ever to increase it's sub count every year like clock-work. World of Tanks will be dead in a couple of years. So will most of the other MMOs people here will hold up on a pedestal and say they have more subs. Gate camps aren't a 100% chance of death. As soon as you land on grid with them, burn back tot he gate and you will be fine. So long as you put an MWD on your ship and your cruiser sized or smaller.
Also, use a scout. Then you don't have to jump in if you don't want to. You don't even really need a scout either, you can just check the map. If the number of kills in that system over the last hour are roughly the same as the amount of traffic going through it (you can check this all on the map), then jumping in is a bad idea.
The problem with Eve is not the players or the mechanics, its the fact that no one ever explains this stuff to anyone. Avoiding gate camps is really really simple once you know how. "In the age of information, ignorance is a choice." |

Why would we necessary want EVE to break a million subs? It is doing very well with 400k subscribers. In fact EVE is going so well it has been growing for a decade and this december broke a record of 450k subs . In another decade EVE might very well have 1M subs if CCP continue on the right path and it might even come sooner when Dust launches. |

That is just silly. Because there is *a chance you *may run into *a gate camp, you're denying yourself of a part of the game you pay to play for.
I could understand if you said that about 0.0 because that can be a real pain with them bubbles. But low sec hasn't got them and as said before you can prepare yourself, check out the route etc. I still at times find myself (on my trade alt) on the wrong side of the gate, too busy buying up cheap stuff, forgetting to turn on/off the filter and so far my trade alt never ran into a gate camp.
Another reason why you're being silly is that the moment you undock in high sec you still have *a chance that *someone will gank you. Doesn't matter where you are, people can shoot you still in the face. Does that make you stop playing the game entirely? Hi, I'm CCP Arrow, I screwed up the.. ummm... |

This isn't a catch-22, its easily solvable. CCP needs to give more incentives to be in player corps so more people will be in them. With more people increases the likelihood that there will be someone knowledgeable in the corporation that can teach the newbies how its done. This. Someone opened up an advertising feature idea in the Assembly Hall at some point, that would be perfect with this. Better corp advertising means people can get in like-minded groups with people who actually know what they're doing and can help to teach newer players how to keep safe. Ie, to avoid gatecamps. "In the age of information, ignorance is a choice." |

I made some similar experience as the OP with this char. With my main, my corp joined a low-sec Alliance. The thing I learned from this is, that you have to make friends in the "not-highsec" area or you are just considered a cyno alt or hunted for the lulz of it.
Low sec isn't the wild west of new eden. Just other rules apply to it than to highsec. You can get shot at by virtually anyone but if you got friends, gang up and turn yourself from beeing the prey to the preyer. For me it was a very thrilling, exciting and new experience to learn something new about life in new eden and make some new friends I like to chat on voice coms.
Loosing ships is a thing you will soon do on a daily basis. There are lots of corps out there that embrace new players and live in low-sec. If you are lucky you find the right bunch of people who will teach you the ropes and ties of eve online, that a pure high-sec located corp won't be able to show you. It's more thrilling than everything I encountered so far in eve. Even living in a WH was not that cool to live in, than low-sec.
It is by far not the part of the map that says "there be dragons!". |

People have said it before, but as someone who has lived in low-sec for going on a year now, I can tell you that there are several things which completely frustrate most gate camps I have been involved in.
Most "gate camps" are not actually. They are wandering, roaming fleets that happen to be on a gate while someone looks for targets in the next system. They are not set up to catch frigates on gates (since this necessitates essentially having a ship specifically designed for catching and killing frigates, which makes them not very useful in the actual fights), which means assuming you have even a modicum of piloting skill that you will get away in a frigate most of the time. Frigates can catch frigates, but they cant survive on the gate. Sensor boosted cruisers can catch frigates but a lot of the time can't keep them held down.
This means use a frigate as a scout before bringing your big, slow, easy to lock, easy to bump ship through. You can even do this solo although thats not recommended.
2) If you are in something big and slow, dont try to warp away. Don't panic. Hold your cloak for a random amount of time while you collect yourself. Turn back to the gate and turn on your prop mod, and all your tank. Chances are everyone will aggres you. They will try to web you down and bump you, and if they do, well... should have scouted, but you took your chances. If they dont have enough web and don't alpha you down, jump through the gate, and find a safe spot to hang around in. Chances are they won't chase after you since they will assume you just completely got away. Most small gangs don't bring probes since that is someone who could be in a more immediately useful ship, so you are probably okay. Hop around anyways. |

That's pretty much true. Unless something changes in a significant way, the game will continue to stagnate.
One of the things CCP could do is remove the jumpgates and allow ships to jump by themselves from system to system. Bam. Suddenly, no gate camps, because there are no gates, a ship can jump in anyplace in the system. Buuuut then all the bored gatecampers will ragequit. They won't HTFU, oh no, that's a one-way street. They will all ragequit or shoot a statue in Jita. After all, why bother flying around scanning and hunting if you can just camp the gate and have people come to you? And it's not like CCP can afford to lose these subs. So nothing ever changes, and the game just keeps on stagnating.
And this is just one example where one group's gameplay (gate campers) supercedes another group's gameplay (everyone else). Yes, there's ways of dealing with camps, but it requires friends, or alt account, or extra time, or all of the above. Something a lot of people aren't willing to do, or don't have time for. So they end up paying for it often enough by getting popped. And many/most see it as fair. And in a way, it is fair. However, this also leads to cancellations. And that leads to a relatively small population, and significantly less income for CCP, which translates into less new things for us, which leads to even more cancellations from people who just get bored to death of the same old stuff. And the cycle continues.
People laugh at "EVE is dying". And they have a right to, because it's been here a good long while. However, I would say the game is most definitely stagnating. We haven't had any record shatters in a good long while. The concurrent user record set a year or more ago is still there. We're still at roughly 450k subs, most of those are alt accounts. If there's any growth, it's likely due to alt propagation, so it's not real growth. And this is after three expansions in a row focusing exclusively on FiS. Perhaps it's time to start branching out into WiS and actually get the Incarna content to a usable state. |

Perhaps it's time to start branching out into WiS and actually get the Incarna content to a usable state. Heaven forbid you should rely on friends or corp mates in an MMO. That would be way too much to ask. So instead let's change the whole nature of the game, remove it's sole and kill it? A sandbox means you can do anything you want within the rules, but so can everyone else. Just because you dislike one mechanic, doesn't mean it's a bad one. Plus you'll find CCP gives you the tools to deal with those mechanics. If you don't want to use those tools, then that's your problem not ours.
Numbers were hitting 60k, you know what killed it? The biggest carebear expansion ever dropped onto the Eve server, Incarna. Or as many called it, incarnage. It's now starting to recuperate and the last thing this game needs for that, is yet more bad carebear ideas.
This game is PvP centric. Almost every aspect of the game is based on PvP, even ship spinning. Time you dealt with that fact.
CCP Zulu..... Forcing players to dock at the captain's quarters is a form of what we actually wanted to get through, which is making Incarna a seamless part of the EVE Online experience. |

They keep gettin stronger? These games fizzle out after just a year, Some even sooner. You dont seem very informed on what you are saying. Please refrain from comparing any game to eve. They are just games. Eve is real. Real consequences. Real player market. Real player driven content. Neither of the games you mentioned have even 1/10th that. You shoot stuff die respawn, or in LOTRO you die and respawn with all your stuff AKA no consequence. This isnt that type of "game".
Janus Darkjudge wrote:I've been playing a month and I couldn't put my finger on why.
Now I know.
1 month? Man have you got some learning to do. I hope you stick around and update this post after 1 year. To see how much you have changed since then. I can imagine it will be very different, but i doubt you will last that long.
Janus Darkjudge wrote:Look, I took the bare minimum equipment with me and I was flying in a Vexor that I could afford to lose so I'm not bitter about the loss.
Insert Bitter. You said you weren't, But it found its way in that last paragraph. You did good by taking something you could afford to lose. But in the same instance you did bad by going alone. You said you read all the posts. You could not have. If you did you wouldn't have went alone. If you fit a Micro Warp Drive you could have burned back to the gate and jumped out. Did you stop to think that maybe it wasn't 12 am to them? There is this crazy thing called timezones, Get to know them, and know them even better in eve.
Janus Darkjudge wrote:I'll keep playing for a while but all those whining that hi-sec should be nerfed should know why no-one goes null sec. I suspect most of us are more than happy to leave to tossers to their onanism and we'll fly space ships for fun instead.
Please do keep playing. In time you will find that your thinking on this matter is very flawed. Read more posts, Talk to informed experienced players. Get some friends! This is an MMO the part you have to learn can be made much easier with a lil bit of effort on your part. |

UI and having to PvE to PvP turns more people away then getting ganked in my opinion, although I will admit I know at least one person IRL who quit because he took his first BS into a lowsec belt to "see what it was like" (and he did).
Still, gatecamps are hardly everywhere (especially in lowsec) nor are they unavoidable. Just a matter of getting over the learning hump which you'll never do by sitting on your ass in highsec grumping that low/null is "too dangerous." |

Ugh. We have a bunch of pirates in Cynabals in our favourite system that believe ganking scrubs on a gate, the same gate, all day, all night, is the epitome of leet peeveepee. I just don't know with whom to agree anymore, this is all very confusing at the moment. I'd like to believe lowsec is there to pew pew and have fun, but I'm also a bit dissapointed that the first few experiences in lowsec pvp go a bit like this:
1. You are being locked. 2. You are now in an egg. 3. Go pay for a new ship.
Not very appealing to people new to the game. Nowadays I can throw away frigs and destroyers by the dozen, just to do crazy stuff, or merely to use them the same way Mario uses a mushroom to bypass said pirates the lazy way even if it cuts into the profits a bit. I couldn't do this in my first few weeks off course, and I can see people getting bored of missioning and mining in hisec rather quickly, quicker then a typical player might develop the habits needed to survive / thrive in lowsec, or blow up people themselves.
That being said there are methods to survive and even thrive (make ISK) in lowsec, and I find them quite enjoyable. I do see how certain players would be put off by the seeming ease others destroy you, or the unfairness percieved by random podding at a gate. But it's very rewarding to master the mechanics to survive there and the only way to learn anything usefull is to get blown up. It's harsh, it's trial-and-error, it's like a NES game on steroids with 40K people in it wanting you dead. Hey, I think that's fun.
You just might bounce back OP. If you stick with it however, you will start crying about how your triple-warpstabbed overshielded T1 hauler is overinsured because it survived it's third gatecamp and that hisec needs to be nerfed. You are this close. |

it's not like that, if you bother to do the smallest amount of looking at the map. system with 30 kills in 24hrs, and 15 kills in the last hour. WHY would you jump in to that system? honestly? "100k for notifications of stupidity, i love this bounty system." |

I keep saying this, but EVE mechanics show their age. Practically every nook and cranny of tactics that can be min-maxed is being carbon copied as soon its its found.
* Gate camps * Log in ambushes * Attacking players already under AI attack in missions (new AI makes this moot) * Camping DED complexes and acceleration gates. * Can flipping (new safeswitch makes this a lot harder) * Tripping up players with the aggressions mechanics. * Attacking freighters at hisec gates with a starter frig just to give it an aggression countdown, not allowing a warpoff. * Swapping ships in an Orca (fixed) * Ganking a miner with one toon, scooping loot with another (been tweaked) * Remote Repair in combat with a neutral ship (fixed with new aggression mechanics) etc etc
Can't really get emergent game play if a handful of dirty tricks works so well people don't bother doing anything else.
One place I worked at, I accidentally found that one vending machine had an "exploit". I could press for example G-4-7 (fast) and get the G3 item for the price of the G7 item, as the first time, an accidental button multi-press gave me the wrong item, at a higher price, so I investigated. I told one guy in class later what I found and in one day the machine got emptied as word spread. It got "patched" very fast.
