This is just a simple question a yes/no.
Eve is a game with a strong pvp element. In fact, the heart of Eve is pvp. While pvp is NOT the "whole" of Eve (not even close to being the "whole" of eve.....), it is a vital part. Remove it, and you have a half baked space game with no real spice.
No, I'd not go to such a server.

You just have to know the definition of risk.
This post sums up the situation perfectly.
Combat and Industry are linked though, as the guy says. Only thing is, when thinking about a "non-PvP" server, don't imagine the game AS IS put onto another server with PvP somehow removed, consider you would have to re-work the mechanics and ACTUALLY CREATE A LOT MORE PvE content (~~~shock~~~).
I think a consensual PvP server would be cool - with fighting arenas, hi-score boards, you name it and a 0.0 PvP free for all.
1. I agree, oh how I agree, more content would be an incredible addition 2. I agree, to some extent suicide ganking is a problem, but this is an overzealous solution
3. As for everything else, I swear you just described a game known to many here as Earth and Beyond.
-It had content (getting out of your ship to talk to npcs) and more varied PvE. -It had consensual-PvP only in arenas. -It had an economy like you described. -The servers shut down September 22, 2004. ------ I generally assume the following: 1. 95% of Empire Carebears don't get 0.0 PVPers. 2. 95% of 0.0 PVPers don't get Empire Carebears. 3. 100% of Ore Thieves steal just to upset the Miners. |

Sharded servers is the absolutely worst mistake Blizzard did - nothing changes on the servers! (after that came such fundamental mistakes such as class based skill system, NPC bashing experience system, faction-based PvP, faction-enforced characters, and so on.) I should really put WoW behind me, but everytime something reminds me I go off on a rant. Bloody wasted second month fee. -- If TC causes you discomfort that you feel is unwarranted or may be outside TC's current contract - contact me, please.

Eve is NOT all about PVP. I hardly ever do PVP and I play a lot. However, it's an important part of the game that keeps my business going (pvp = ships blown up = more for me to build). EVE without PVP would be pretty damn boring.

So those that complain about losing thier ships are really more mad at them selves for doing something stupid and not so much against pvp.
I think most that play prolly have a good heart even though it doesnt show so much in alot of their post. They are really vocal in protecting what they see as a good game.
So do you think its because of the risk factor involved that eve isnt all that popular?

You don't have to risk anything if you don't want as in the end its your decision.
In all games theres risk even PvE. I've lost one or two (maybe 7) ships to NPC's and that's more than I've ever lost to players and this is my own stupidity of thinking that I have enough shield left etc. While I don't really know the corp situation if there was a PvE server there wouldn't be as much interaction with other players who are far more interesting than any boring ole npc.
Freelancer and X2 are examples of a pve environment but other players in this game offer you more freedom as they are the ones who build and compete against you etc even though you do not directly see it.

No way, if only NPCs were responsible for making ships go boom, and we relied on that to keep the economy moving, it would be a VERY stagnant economy.
PVP is the only way for a game like this to function. "I have never had so much fun playing a game that I have trouble staying awake playing!" |

That's exactly what would happen, you'd end up having trade wars. Some jerk off would end up buying every single strip miner in the game and sell them back out at 100x the original cost, or something nutto like that, but that opens the other point, that pvp is not just blowing up people's ships.
Unless they build a single player version of Eve, you'll never get away from the pvp.

Most definitely yes. To get away from the multitude of people in this game who can't possibly have fun unless they get to hassle someone else:

The reasons why EnB was closed have arguably nothing to do with the genre of the game or even the fact that the intent was to provide a PvE game. The details of the implementation matter, and EVE would fail the same way if they made those mistakes.
As for WoW in space, hell yeah I want WoW in space, as I said before, I want a game with EVE's graphics and WoW's gameplay. Not EVE though, I don't want EVE to change into that, but a separate server, or a separate game, made by someone else or not, would be nice.
Note that, in a way, the original poster is asking "If the devs provided, free of charge (or for the same subscription or all-access pass or whatever) access to a NEW game, different from EVE, would you play it?"
You're all answering NO, but if some other MMO developer out there made a new space combat game, you'd all try it. Especially if they said something like "Everyone who has an active EVE account gets access for free."

Edited by: babyblue on 02/08/2005 19:43:15 I think that Eve in the form of WoW (ie. with Eve graphics, atmosphere, universe, NO ELVES!) would be an interesting experiment. Watching the droves of players come over to this kind of server would sure shut the PvP extremists up and I'm thinking ultimately it would get twice as many subscribers, for reasons already articulated by an ex-EQ GM in a previous thread.

This is a game of wolves and sheep, heavily angled to favor the wolves. For better or worse, it has been around long enough to achieve a level of equilibrium between the two, and until the influx of new non PvP oriented players begins to dwindle, and the predators run out of people unwittingly volunteering to play their prey, the drastic changes necessary for such a server just aren't going to happen.
Never say never, though. UO imploded due to poor management of PvP oriented and PvE oriented populations, when alternatives that managed things better came to the market, it can happen to Eve as well. In the end it all comes down to keeping the project financially viable, and if the veteran player/pirate oriented skew we see at the present begins to cause things to start looking iffy, crazy things could happen.

Not on your life sonny!
On the other hand I'd like to see random ganking discouraged in favor of deliberate attacks towards tangiable goals and megacorporation clout. Conventional warfare and sensible politics, could that be another pair of oxymorons?
In plain english, for corporate and faction standings meaning a helluva lot more and people breaking the rules 'cause they're bored suffering twice the agony.

You're saying you want an exact copy of WoW in space. Hell yeah, that will happen.
1: less than 10% of the mmo's are SF. 2: Another copy of the age-old concept of mmo's? A grinding game? 3: Think about what you are saying. A COPY of WoW, but in space? Why shouldn't i play WoW then? Exactly the same gameplay, plus an actual avatar. 4: If CCP only wanted money they'd already have made a wow in space.

The question does not demand a simple "yes" or "no" response.
Not that any of our opinions count or anything..
However, there is leeway for a multitude of options and small adjustments. No situation is perfect, including the current one.
Yes, you could just choose to conform to the necessities of the current situation. One is scarcely a genius for mastering those simple conditions however. I prefer to see situations subtly manipulated to procure previously unconcieved security strategies.
For example: Increased, but still limited, Factional Security to compensate for decreased Concord Security. Thus we would lose the total security of say 0.5 and 0.6 systems, but gain partial security in 0.3 and 0.4 systems. Clever, but simple.
Also, you should be persuaded by what I have to say due to my incommensurate and insensible level of preoccupation with these issues. I have coined the word "expertise" to encapsulate this state of affairs. (The alternative was "pedenchant," which was vetoed by committee.)

No, I'm saying that there are some things I like about Eve and some things I like about WoW. There are some things I absolutely hate about both of them however.
The question was whether or not I would join a non-pvp server and I answered Yes - I don't believe the original questioner implied that one would take Eve in it's entirety, flick a switch and see the game "pvp disabled". I believe a more complex mixture of both would be better. At the moment, as so many people point out, NOWHERE is safe in Eve from PvP. As you can see by looking at the map however, 8 out of 10 players (or their carebear alts) voted with their warp drives and headed for the relative safety of the relatively non-pvp-centric high sec empire (not me or my alts, I might add).
So I think the idea has merit, but with some provisos, such as still allowing 0.0 pvp free for all and installing PvP arenas in high sec, where consensual PvP (with rankings, tournaments, champions, etc.) can take place.
Also bear in mind this is a totally hypothetical thread and it isn't going to happen, so it doesn't really have much bearing on reality .

You know, guys ...
What's so brilliant about this thread is that everyone agrees on the matter. A non-PvP server would just suck (big time). I love you guys, carebears or not. This is a brilliant game just because of the PvP, whatever grade it is atm. Beautiful! (Ok, there was one anti.PvP opinion in the thread so far, which really isn't that much.)
