I need help. Trying to choose new kit and don't know which way to go. So far I have only had Intel chips, but great success all the time. So far never AMD chip.
Help appreciated.

Most benchmarks show that AMD Athlon64 and FX chips are faster when it comes gaming than their Intel counterparts. This isn't true for all applications, but for gaming AMD is better.

And other applications have been shifting. A64s are showing 100% speed advantages in Firefox, large advantages in Office applications, and are now winning by a large margin in 64-bit encoding tests.
Currently there is nothing that the Pentium 4s win in by any noticable margin. -- Proud member of the [23].

AMD better 3D performance. P4 for better video encoding ability.
Mind you, a high end P4 isn't exactly a gaming slouch either..........

Amds are much better and cheaper. The only advantage of pentiums is that they don't set on fire as often.

Correct. The high end P4s can go over 80C with the stock cooler. Comparing a P4 3.8Ghz to a Winchester A64 system, the P4 uses over 100 watts more power, overall. -- Proud member of the [23].

Done Deal.
Purchased the AMD chip today.
I don't have loads of cash, but if anyone interested, here's what I managed to buy:
Nvidia 6600 128 PCI-E Asus A8N-E Mobo Antec Slk Case AMD 939 3000 Kensington 2G RAM 160 G Hard Drive - And I can't recall what type of DVD Burner/Rewriter etc.
Thanks all for the help. For those that suggested AMD, I hope this thing doesn't burn out on me.
