Read the thread and the stickies? I know it's farfetched, but you never know it might actually answer your question. No really, I'm serious this thread contains information ( even at the first few pages) and the stickies too!

Well, riddle me this.
Is there some utility to dump this data out of the program while actually running the program?
I can run that myself and upload to my Web site if there is. That would be an acceptable alternative for the moment, at least to me.

Edited by: Grey Area on 26/09/2005 18:30:15 Another "heavily moderated" thread I see...
Let me try and be more constructive;
I can write a spreadsheet that when I copy and paste the data from the EVE website, will do all the background calculations to tell me when skills will be completed etc.
Why don't CCP create a stand alone server to do the same? Give it a once every 24 hour import of everybody's stats, then let the server continue the calculation. Sure, after you start to train a new skill you won't see the effect until the next import, but currently I'd take "something" over "nothing".
Plus if it's a stand-alone server there's no drain on anything else. Of course they might have to spend some money on that too. Ah, NOW I see the problem.... ========================================= * I'm ALLOWED to cheat. I'm a STARSHIP. * ========================================= |

Here's an idea on the character sheet that would cause minimal load on the server.
1) generate a new sheet each time a change is made. Instead of having the application connect to the database each time someone makes a request for the character sheet, actually write a hard copy of the sheet to the server. this will decrease database load significantly. the sheet would only need to be updated each time a new skill is trained for each character.
2) make the character sheet optional. by default, disable access tot he character sheet for everyone, and let them enable it themselves, PER CHARACTER. so the application is only generating the sheets for people who actually use it.
3) use javascript. when you generate a sheet, write the date the current skill in training will be complete to a javascript variable. then, use javascript to determine the time as it counts down. THIS ACTUALLY IMPROVES the sheet, and will reduce the need to refresh the page each time you want to see how much longer the skill will take to train.
4) as for the XML, make this optional as well. since you can't embed javascript into the XML, simply supply the date the current skill in training will be complete.
I would be happy to donate my time to develop such a system, and I think everyone on here, myself included, would love to see the sheet back up.
So many people these days design applications where the database is queried constantly, at least once a page. DATABASE CALLS ARE EXPENSIVE! Use them as few as possible! Yes, IO calls are expensive as well, but as long as you are making an IO call (to write a file to the filesystem) only once each character who OPTED-IN to the character sheet "program" actually STARTS training a new skill, you're golden.
This scenario would 1) cut server load for the character sheet at least 60% (very rought estimate) 2) improve the sheet itself, using javascript to display a constantly counting down training time remaining vs needing to refresh the sheet every few minutes 3) improve the quality of the xml data. heck, you could probably even code scripts that would send an email alert when the skill is done training if we knew exactly what date/time that would be. 4) make everyone on the board very happy. 5) earn the ccp all the strippers, booze and drugs in my hanger as well ;)
again, if you would like help, just let me know.

Firstly, thanks for all the "We want this back" and "ECM 4TW" type replays to this, check my sig for the new home of ECM, and it's brothern, ESF, EM, ECC, EMS...
Originally by: Brannigan McCormick Not knowing what exactly has caused the XML server to overload, i'm taking an educated guess on it being something as simple as sheer traffic.
Your right, and one of the devs said it in the dev blog, the char sheet was causing too much lag on the servers cos it was soooo good...
Originally by: Brannigan McCormick Secondly, and this would probably take some coordination with Free Falcon Enterprises (but it seems like they already communicate in some form with some devs from CCP), make two different types of skill-polls.
Actually since the last downage of the char sheet there has been 2 XML feed, look in your ECM folder and check the .training.xml file in the XML folder....
Originally by: Talons
Nooooooo... The ECM is a terrific tool.
No it's not, it's the worst tool ever wrote... J/K :D
Originally by: Talons
Please repair as soon as possible. Now, I understand that you guys need new hardware for this? How come? CCP got new hardware, a tremendous amount, last year!
But we now have 70K+ accounts... more accounts = more hardware....
Originally by: Talons
Let's say each and every person in EVE uses ECM... That is what 12,500 accounts? The site can't take that many hits a day? Come on... eBay takes that in a few minutes.
No that's 70K accounts * 3 chars = 210K hits in a second every hour, I don't think ebay could handle that....
Originally by: Talons
Now, since I sincerely doubt that the CCP hardware is at fault here and there was a post by Future Falcon about a need for a network 're-write', I believe the cause may be in the ECM and its 'number of retries' section. This is PURE speculation on my part, but stands as an 'educated' guess. The point: The problem is not with CCP, its with the ECM itself. Once it is re-written, it should be available again. At least I hope so.
Your close, and after my investigations into the faults that's what I came up with, but it's not totally ECM's fault...

OK Guys just to give you a little time frame here, and don't hold me to it....
Next version of ECM *SHOULD* hit the Dev's / beta testers within a month... Next PUBLIC release, will hopefully be 2 months after that.
The reason for the long beta test - New code, New idea's, New Coding Team...
Oh and as for the offers of help, We will be requiring some help with some coding at some point, but at this moment in time there are 3 programmers on the original code trying to get the bugs out of that, and one programmer on the next version, getting the core code done (which is about 2-3 weeks away from the devs getting their hands on the new code, that is as long as I stop getting called into work every weekend....)

Edited by: Fineberg on 26/09/2005 21:21:11 No offense, but I really don't see what the big deal is. No one in their right mind should have to depend soley on the character sheet to know when they have to train a new skill.
Let's say you start a skill on Monday at 5pm and the skill takes 5 days and 2 hours to complete. That means it will finish on Saturday at 7pm. Simple, right? All you have to do is mark it on a little day planner and you're golden! If your skill training is really that important, than you shouldn't have to rely on this web-site for it.

CAn Eve not arrange for an Email to be sent to the account owners when a skill ends? If we are at work, with kids or wives making kids would be nice to know so we can log in when possible.

When they update the hardware on the servers with the new equipment,.. it is down to avoid "complications" as per [GM] Sw00sh. That was the response I got in my "ask a question" submission. When it' back up, it means everything should be more back to normal than before.
But I think you should be able to alter training from teh wb interface. Who agree's with that?

Good job, keep up the hard work. I really mean it. Through your tireless efforts we get to come here and use these nice tools (and ultimately, your hard work enables us to moan when things go wrong, see next paragraph on that).
To: Whiners, crybabies and other "Oh no! fix it plz now!" people.
GROW UP! Seriously, your postings of "omigod fix it plz now u know" and crap like that seriously **** me off. The mods are aware, the devs are aware, and OMG!!! It is being fixed!!! Chill out, grab a tequila and have some freepin P-A-T-I-E-N-C-E. Do not expect Houdini insta-fixes: They do not exist.
This forum was created four days ago. FOUR DAYS. And yet everyone has to come in here at least every hour and moan some more?! GET OVER IT!
Let's see here:
My Character Sheet from Eve Online: Free, and a nice tool. (AND NOT A PAID SERVICE!!) My Eve Client I login with to play the game (and change skills): Free The extreme amounts of hard work by Eve Staff: Free My game account to power all the above: 14.95USD or whatever it is a month (sorry my price may be off)
Free, Free.... Thats a whole lot of "Free", with one tiny tiny bill.
16000 users to use the eve character sheet... yes, if we all used it ONCE and ONLY once per day. But we don't. We use it lots of times a day.
16000 users, of which I would guess at least 25% use an external manager such as Eve Character Manager, which takes information off of Character Manager each update... sometimes as often as (gasp) 100 times a day.
Morale of the story?
Go Devs, Go Moderators. Shut the whining and complaining; the issue is being worked on and will be resolved when it is resolved. Fly safe, blow some stuff up, and haul (or mine) your bum off. (and stop posting).
This has been a public service announcement from MHWBTCHFP Corporation. (see dictionary.com : Maltrox Hates Whiny Babies That Cant have Freepin Patience Corporation)

And cease making 'intelligent' offers for solutions... I am pretty confident that the guys at CCP are quite capable of solving the problem without your help and in less time than you would need. :)
There are more important aspects than this character sheet, even if it is a nice feature.
