EVE runs on SQL; all you would need is an additional line inserted into annother db on character creation, which would put in the name and the character image (linked). Password changes would cause a bit of a milder problem, and would need to be disabled on the forums and done through the site.
Yeah. Whatever.

Originally by: Spathi However, to allow "live" updates to the character sheet, CCP should investigate limiting the usage of the character info and XML generator pages by only allowing an ip to load each once an hour (or some time period).
That's *exactly* what they did after the last time they shut down the character pages... now it's overloaded again.
Though actually... I think they cut the XML download, and kept the formatted HTML (it wasn't very long before I saw programs that converted the HTML back to an ECM-readable XML).
So it was live 100% of the time... but became overloaded. Then it was cached for 1h, and now it's overloaded. Which of course is why I suggest caching for 4, 8, or 16h... but temporarily, until the hardware is upgraded to handle the larger player base (or Eve-I comes back... and forum usage drops). A fix that would've probably been easier than closing it.

Though... it had nothing to do with IP (and doesn't need to be), that character's info was cached.

The developers of ECM know what one of the issues that was a part of the main cause of myeve dieing (and with me being one of the dev's of the next gen of ECM I can tell you that the next version is beening re-wrote from the ground up when it comes to the networking code, and removing some of the other errors is also meaning a ground up re-write...).
We were informed of the problems with the XML feed a few weeks back, but we have just not had the time between getting the code from Islay to work out the code works, how to fix this bug and get it to compile again.
We do have a new delivery system, and you can download a copy of ECM from our new home on the web http://www.eve-ffet.com. Also keep an eye out for the next generation of the eve tools from Future Falcon, you will like it... One of the devs for the new Future Falcon Suite of Eve Tools, visit us here

Funny how the community so far has been way more succesful at creating a working search funtion then the people from CCP who are being paid to do this.

Last time you had a load issue you just disabled the XML part of the Character Sheet. Why can you not just do the same again? Surely there is no reason to disable the whole thing if it is just external applications that are causing the load?

The reason the whole thing was disabled was thanks to some cleaver programmers that wrote an app to use the HTML character sheet to update their ECM, thus causing more problems for CCP... One of the devs for the new Future Falcon Suite of Eve Tools, visit us here

Can the My Character link be removed then to avoid confusion. Its hard enough finding the right thread on these forums especially without any search facility _______________________________________________ If only you could see what I've seen with your eyes. |

Umm, no offense to you or the person responsible, but there is no other function on this website MORE valuble then the ability to properly schedule trains around my work schedule, something the in game interface does not allow.
could you either improve the in game interface, allow us to chain at least 2 skills together in the training que, or generate a static xml update during each mornings update we can manualy download even in zip format and import into char manager?

suggestions to reduce load on My Character:
1. plain text version 2. an ingame option to "set next skill to train", so we dont have to keep checking completion times so often
alternatively: 3. a web-based skill training editor, so we dont have to log in to the game so often

Not knowing what exactly has caused the XML server to overload, i'm taking an educated guess on it being something as simple as sheer traffic.
Seeing that the CM is a very vital tool for me, and my corp-mates (and a lot of other Eve players), I had some thoughts about what could be done about it.
First and foremost, trim the XML generated, theres a whole abundance of redundant data in there (who needs the skillpoint levels for a given skill, this information is readily available, and could be hardcoded into a client) (This ofcourse unless CCP plans to change the way ranks and skillpoints needed interact)
Secondly, and this would probably take some coordination with Free Falcon Enterprises (but it seems like they already communicate in some form with some devs from CCP), make two different types of skill-polls.
One that returns the currently training skill (and nothing else, resulting in even less data to transmit), and one that, as today, returns a chars total skill-sheet (with optimized and trimmed XML of course)
Seeing that the CM wouldn't have to download a 10k+ XML sheet every time it polls, but only a 500 bytes, would make traffic drop a LOT, and then it would only need to get the large XML every time the skill-in-training was different from what the local CM has.
Of course, if the problem is something different, then this solution probably won't work, but, I just thought that i'd share my idea /Brannigan McCormick |

You guys know who you are talking to right? Its CCP, the bringers of EVE!! Id think they know how to make a simple web app.
I could also start shouting out suggestions on how to make this thing right, but what ever I think of I belive they have thougt of to and dismissed cuz of something I know nothing about.
So just keep it down and let the grownups work.

Originally by: Letouk Mernel Here we go, the 7 emotional stages of a "complaint":
1. Laziness. During this stage, the subject finds it impossible to search the forums, to see if the complaint has been answered already.
2. Curiosity. Driven by strong feelings and a need for information, the subject posts a question, opening yet another thread to voice his complaint.
3. Shock/surprise. When the official authorities answer, the whole Luke/Darth Vader "I am your father" scene is re-enacted.
4. Desire. This stage is characterized by the subject, and several other people who recognize they have the same complaint as the subject, arguing about which feature they would rather have.
5. Selflessness. At this stage, because of a desire to help, the subjects scour the web, collect links to all the random pieces of software that sound similar to what the complaint was about, and suggest that they be used instead of the solution proposed by the devs.
6. Apathy. After spending a long time in stage 5, discussing various options and waiting for the devs to explain why they're not using any of the excellent solutions presented, the subjects give up and the thread moves down the list and disappears to page 2, or possibly 3.
7. Forgetfulness. Busy with other endeavours and topics, the subject(s) forget that the question has been asked and answered, and what the answer was, thus paving the way to a return to stage 1 and repeating the cycle all over again, in a few days.
Lmao! Superb.
So...does anyone know why the Character Sheet is down?

Nooooooo... The ECM is a terrific tool.
Please repair as soon as possible. Now, I understand that you guys need new hardware for this? How come? CCP got new hardware, a tremendous amount, last year!
Let's say each and every person in EVE uses ECM... That is what 12,500 accounts? The site can't take that many hits a day? Come on... eBay takes that in a few minutes.
Now, since I sincerely doubt that the CCP hardware is at fault here and there was a post by Future Falcon about a need for a network 're-write', I believe the cause may be in the ECM and its 'number of retries' section. This is PURE speculation on my part, but stands as an 'educated' guess. The point: The problem is not with CCP, its with the ECM itself. Once it is re-written, it should be available again. At least I hope so.
To: FutureFalcon You guys want some help with that little bad boy program, let me know. Its what I do for a living!

you know, now that ecm is non-functional, i cant remember how i used to keep track of my skill training?
i assume i just used to use the char sheet...
any chance the char sheet can be moved somewhere temporarily? i.e. so ecm wont hit it, but we can?

I'm manually editing the <old> generated xml file - keeps ECM ticking over till My Character comes back soon (tm)
its not difficult to add new skill books you've started training or changing the number of skill points for a skill book already in the list.
This allows me to keep my queue upto date
