The load generated by the character manager service was causing extreme amounts of load for the MyEVE server, so much that it was assisting in other MyEVE pages automatically disabling, such as the forums. The character manager service has been temporarily disabled until better load balancing and a hardware upgrade have been made.

So, what does that have to do with the "My Character" page? Surely that isn't causing the problems? I thought it was just the EVE Character Manager authentication code that was causing the problems, or did you actually figure out that it was on your side? Capital Ships Production Forum |

The person responsible knows what is causing the load, which doesn't mean there is an easy fix for it.

There are at least 3 threads for Character Manager, and each one has a link asking to post in a different one. Also had a hard time finding it cause there is no search function for this forum (which would be nice). Since a lot of people actually use the Character Manager as they have a real life and real job, and more than one account, can we at least get one of these threads stickied so we can check on the status of making the Character Manager available again please?

It wont be available in a long time. Search function is being worked on as well.

How about just deleting the superfluous threads, and bring a PM system into play so that mods can...
1.) PM the OP about the thread deletion. 2.) Delete the thread without more threads about the threads being deleted :)
Easy Peasy!

I would rather have the character sheet back, than a search function.
I use the character sheet daily... I only use the forums when something goes wrong (like the character sheet not responding).

Just give us the ability to change skills from the character sheet and we'll stop spamming the page with EVE Character Manager update requests.

I believe devs in the past have said they will never allow people to change skills without logging into the game itself

Here we go, the 7 emotional stages of a "complaint":
1. Laziness. During this stage, the subject finds it impossible to search the forums, to see if the complaint has been answered already.
2. Curiosity. Driven by strong feelings and a need for information, the subject posts a question, opening yet another thread to voice his complaint.
3. Shock/surprise. When the official authorities answer, the whole Luke/Darth Vader "I am your father" scene is re-enacted.
4. Desire. This stage is characterized by the subject, and several other people who recognize they have the same complaint as the subject, arguing about which feature they would rather have.
5. Selflessness. At this stage, because of a desire to help, the subjects scour the web, collect links to all the random pieces of software that sound similar to what the complaint was about, and suggest that they be used instead of the solution proposed by the devs.
6. Apathy. After spending a long time in stage 5, discussing various options and waiting for the devs to explain why they're not using any of the excellent solutions presented, the subjects give up and the thread moves down the list and disappears to page 2, or possibly 3.
7. Forgetfulness. Busy with other endeavours and topics, the subject(s) forget that the question has been asked and answered, and what the answer was, thus paving the way to a return to stage 1 and repeating the cycle all over again, in a few days.

No it's not. Absolutely not.
EVE runs on SQL; all you would need is an additional line inserted into annother db on character creation, which would put in the name and the character image (linked). Password changes would cause a bit of a milder problem, and would need to be disabled on the forums and done through the site.

so.. instead of giving harware and code monkeys (no offense, oh code monkeys of wonder) time to buff code, add new equipment and make things happy joyfull again, the answer is to implement a totally new forum system? character pages are down as a tradeoff to keep forums up. thats a pretty good thing IMO, cause people at least have a place to b**ch (birch) about the Character pages being missing in action.
dunno.. ol' Tek dont know nothin' bout nothin', but im happy to see info from higher ups

Would having a cached copy of the database stop the MyEVE server from killing itself? I assume the load on the live database is what is causing stuff to be auto-disabled.
If a cached copy of the character database was made during daily downtime then you could in theory just re-enable the My Character sheet using this daily copy. It wouldnt reflect current changes made but it would give people some idea of when their longer skills end training or what their stats are.
Also to prevent a majority of the ECM queries, you either rename the script or disable the XML generation.
Just an idea ;)

Well that's kind of mean. Also, won't work: won't take too long to fix/patch ECM (though with Eve-I down, distribution is a little tougher).
In the end... what use would a once-daily update be worth if not to keep ECM up to date?
How about just extend the cache expiration? As it was, any time the DB was queried, the XML was cached on the web servers for 1h... if you checked again, it was the same data, and no query to the DB. Why not just extend that to 4, 8, even 16 hours? Hell... I'd be happy with 24 hours, just so ECM could be fairly up to date for planning purposes... that, and with characters with 16m, 18m, and 20m SP, I don't often have skills that are shorter than several days anyhow.

Edited by: Spathi on 25/09/2005 03:59:59 With a daily char db copy you wouldnt really need to worry about the xml sheet as much.
However, to allow "live" updates to the character sheet, CCP should investigate limiting the usage of the character info and XML generator pages by only allowing an ip to load each once an hour (or some time period). That way ECM still functions, people can check their skill status but the system doesnt get raped by either reloading the page or a badly configured ECM.
I've made something very similar to this before to prevent overloading the system. In that case, people were reloading the page to get updated stats and this actually acted like a denial of service attack. I originally made it limit loading by an ip to once every 5 minutes and then I switched the entire system to be a 5 minute delay cache of the stats. That way one machine queried the stats every 5 minutes and anyone loading would get a cache rather than live data.
Alternatively, if there is large volumes of disk space available, each query to the character page could write a static html file to disk which is pulled up for each subsequent load of the page. After say 15 minutes the "cache" expires and the next reload generates a new html page.
While these ideas wont eliminate the need for new hardware, it is a temporary solution until the new kit arrives in the datacenter. CCP could implement the ip limits or some kind of cached page for characters to limit the damage. In PHP (I know CCP use asp) I believe Zend has a way to cache pages so that anything which hasnt changed doesnt need to be pulled out of the database a lot. Perhaps ASP has something similar.
