I'm running a 30 Inch Dell monitor at 2560 x 1600 and it looks excellent. I can already see little things in the background that I don't notice at lower resolutions.

Need to keep up with the times, Storage space and internet bandwidth are not a problem for a lot of people these days. The people playing EVE, and most likely the people downloading the hi res pack, will be people who this applies to the most I would think.
If someone messes up adding the hi res to their install, well isn't it handy the launcher acts as the repair tool, yes would be a big download, but not like the user would struggle to fix his broken eve client.
