Do you fire the first shot, or do you wait till your opponent(s) have fired the first shot?
If you fire the first shot you are the aggressor, and your opponent is simply defending her/his self.
If they fire the first shot at you, they are the aggressor, and you are simply defending yourself.

Not necessarily, if they use a gun your shields if the round hits can absorb the first round, if they use missiles or rockets you can see em coming, if they use lasers they might miss with the first salvo. Its the principal of who shoots first becomes the aggressor. |

I think what you meant to say was this: "If they use a gun and the round hits, your shields can absorb the first round." Is that what you were trying to say? If yes, then what happens when you are in a shield tanked ship?

Yes, and if your shield suffered a high rate of damage on the opening salvo, if you were not warp scrambled you would be prudent to exit asap, those that turn and run away live to fight another day.

Whether I shoot first or not only makes me the agressor according to the rules of the game. If I wardec you, I am the agressor regardless of whether I press F1 first when we meet. If I am bumping you off the gate to keep you from jumping while my mates arrive to gank you, I'm the agressor and won't even fire a shot while you burn.
If I've decided we are going to fight then whether I actually fire the first short or not largely depends on whether the fight is taking place near a gate or station.

In lowsec I wait for them to aggress if near gates or stations to have that extra DPS on my side, unless they're -5 and then I will sometimes aggress first.
In nullsec I'm more than happy to aggress first.
In both cases, I try and use my head. Being rash and giving yourself a 60 second movement restriction timer when you're at a disadvantage is a fast and easy way to lose a ship that you could have otherwise flown around for longer having much more fun. |
