I'll just say this: everything I ever hated about MMORPGs was present in Everquest and is not in Eve . . . especially the stupid kids talking with their 7's and 3's and x's and all that. I definitely got the shivers reading this thread . . .

Sorry, I haven't been able to read the whole thread... Op made me laugh so much, because it's so true.
If SOE were involved in this game, hah. Anyone want to have a good laugh, go read the star wars galaxies forums. in particular the jedi forums.
SOE are pants.

EverQuest is a good game, but the way SOE deliver the content is crap, using the site for me was a leason in pain. EVE's website is everything I could want, it's simple to navigate and use.

Well admittedly MxO was horribly designed from the start. TONS of potential, marred by some unbelievably bad design decisions.
And that was BEFORE SoE came in. :)

No they didn't, they bought the company that introduced the first 3D MMORPG (989 Studios) and then proceeded to drive out any of the in-house talent that came along with it, as they ran in terror from "The Vision".
SOE didn't *create* anything. They used Sony's phat pockets and sucked the life out of SOMEONE ELSE's ideas.

Yet, bojillions of people still play EQ1, and EQ2. And, for some reason, the other games they run which can only be referred to as "trash".
I didn't mind EQ2 that much. It had a bit of FFXI to it at one point where you ground to a halt with levelling, but that's been fixed and the game's actually a hell of a lot more enjoyable now than it was at launch. And it was still pretty fun at launch.
The thing I liked about EQ2 was that it had an almost CCP-esqe eye for detail. Everywhere, everything was meticulously designed and textured. Perhaps a bit too much given it doesn't run worth a damn if you crank the detail settings to their max with the even the best PCs. But you really got the feeling the developers and designers put a lot of themselves into the game. Just like EVE. :P

Eclipse refugee here. Honestly guys, if you havent played SOE game dont. You dont want to know what it is to play a game made by them. I stood by SWG for over 2 years, thru all the worse and worse changes, and it took them one move to completely obliterate SWG and effectively tell 90% of vets - go away your game no longer exists. CCP should be happy with the rapid increase of subscriptions though

But that's just it, there aren't all that many players left (at least in EQ1, I never played EQ2). The numbers are hugely inflated by players with multiple accounts. I still keep in contact with some of my friends from EQ1, and one guy has 7 accounts, another has 5 and another has at least 8 (that I know of, this guy is insane). Thier subscriber base collapsed after the release of WoW and never recovered. Why?
-Bad management -Stolen game features that don't work right -Endless grinding
If you were to ask 1000 players of EQ1 why they still play, I'd be very surprised if more than 10 of them said "Because it's a good game". Most would say "Well my friend soandso still plays, so I only log on to talk to him", or "Well I've got 7 years invested in this character".
People stopped playing EQ1 for fun YEARS AGO. In fact, I can pinpoint the exact moment the fun "ended" for me, and that was the day Planes of Power went live. The 60 hour camp fest for my Vex Thal key didn't do it. The endless faction grinding in Velious didn't do it, it was the day they basically re-wrote the roles of every class in the game.

If SOE did take it over, they'd fire all the devs and outsource everything to India.
All the ISD people would quit due to the SOE policies. Aurora would be disbanded.
I'd rather take a torpedo up the tail pipe then let SOE buy out CCP. Fear the Ibis of doom. |

Yes, their motto says it all--"You're in our world now." They take that literally. They don't seem to understand that after the profit motive their goal should be customer satisfaction, not self satisfaction.

Funny you should mention endless (dare I add "pointless" to that as well?) grinding, and WoW, in the same post. Was the reason I quit that (well, that and the completely non-engaging gameplay).

Yeah, I got the same impression. Although, I did like the stylized graphics. It gave me a more imersive feeling than EQ2's "20,000 poly-count to make you believe this dark elf is real" approach.

You've been hanging out in that 17-page flamefest from last night too much if you think SOE could do anything but turn EVE into a cookie-cutter PC nightmare of bland, simple and non-offensive gameplay.
CCP is still a step ahead, and SOE couldn't close the gap if they wanted to. Which, as a matter of fact, they don't. ------ I generally assume the following: 1. 95% of Empire Carebears don't get 0.0 PVPers. 2. 95% of 0.0 PVPers don't get Empire Carebears. 3. 100% of Ore Thieves steal just to upset the Miners. |

EVE Online - Now for XBOX 360, PS3 and TiVOGames!
Once I found out that they ported a 3 year old game to be a console rather than make up a stupided version of it for the controller crowd I cannceled both my accounts and will never go back. I signed up to play a MMORPG, not some dumb console POS. -- Lil Miner |

Nope.
The problem might be drink related - ie: I am sober and having to suffer long bursts of reality. ______________________________________________
