Hi,
I am not asking "In theory". I am not asking vs POSs. I would like to know, from people who have used them like BoB and IRON, whether using dreads in fleet combat (long range) really gives you a big advantage, and how they are used.

I've seen a lot of dreads at the top of killmails so i guess they are quite useful.

The biggist problem with dreads is siege mode.... you need it to do good damage but was you cant warpout till the cycle is up if your fleet losses you dont stand much chance.

The Question was how are they in Fleet Battles vs POS's right?
Against POS, they are great because they do massive amounts of Damage against them. With that said, you need to make sure they are well protected. While a Moros has drones to help defend itself, that's still not a proper defense against smaller ships that can Web and Scramble them.
I'm not too sure about this, but I think that another nice thing about the Dreads is that you can use it to carry other Frigs and Clone Jump to them, so when the crew needs additional help, corpmates can clone jump to the Dread and help out. Though I may be mistaken about this feature.

Thats motherships you're thinking of there, Dreads don't have that ability.

Can a Dread jump out of a battle if it is warp scrambled?

From what i have heard dreads in ship fleet battle are pointless, sure the swarms of drones will have any BS pilot screaming "RUN 4 T3H HILLZ" but thats about it, now stick them next to a POS and siege mode it, now your talking.
Personally out of the BFS id put carrier on top of the fleet ops list, the fighters are pure ebil and would make most near ANY ship leggit save the Titan.

No, a dread cannot jump whilst in seige OR whilst scrambled.
As for the topic question - I do not believe that dreads give us any more capability in a fleet fight than battleships do, tho they certainly are a target magnet (this is a good thing).

Perhaps dreads will become useful in fleets when we'll see fleets with carriers in them which should be like shooting at a POS.

Yep, Dreads are anti-pos and anti-capital ship, capital ships. They're like bringing a sumo wrestler to a kung-fu convention otherwise tho.

no, you cant use your jump drive whilst any module is activated on you

I love how I ask a question specifically requesting NO COMMENTS on POSs or from clueless people, and all but one or two comments are either about POSs or from clueless people.

I've not been very impressed by Moros in fleet battle, except their drones that are quite efficient at killing support / tacklers. Make me wonder about carriers, I'd like to see them in fight, I guess they'll be much better than dreads.

Seems they're a bit useless against fleets except for being decoys. It'll be nice to see them with a mix of carriers and such. I'd imagine they can do a fair bit of damage to other capital ships.

Which is complete and total BULL****. This is something I brought up at FanFest over and over again and am a bit ****ed off still exists. I even argued for a new, cruiser-powered module that would allow you to stop a Dread from folding space or whatever the hell it does.
The fact that someone with 200k skill points in a Rifter can put one point of scramble on a Dread and stop it from using its JUMP DRIVE?! Gimme a frakin' break! -

Anyone who thinks dreads are useless in a fleet battle hasn't seen BoB's dual giga revelations in action, or what a mess a couple of thors' will make of your purty apoc.
Dreads as decoys are very cold war, enter the days of capital fleets ftw.

TBH its gonna be a chicken and egg scenario.. Carriers and motherships are vastly more effective than dreadnoughts at killing everything besides a BS.
1. Their capital remote rep/boost/cap transfer ranges are obscene, allowing them to soak up insane amounts of damage. Their cap recharge rates are nothing to be scoffed at and lacking a capital NOS, with 3-4 carriers you will easily be able to tank indefinitely anything that is thrown at you.
2. If they havent changed anything since the test server, the fighters WILL FOLLOW TARGETS THAT WARP OUT BACK TO THEIR SAFESPOT and kill them there. Thats a guaranteed kill without needing tacklers very effective at guaranteeing that the hostile FC/target callers die if you have good intel.
Dreads are the obvious counter, in fact the dreads that usually suck, the minmatar and caldari ones will now be pushed to the forefront since sig radius is no longer a penalty. Especially since both can change damage types that the opponent is the weakest.
Once we see carriers being fielded, we will see dreads being fielded as the counter. This however might result in extreme blobwars where one side will not engage till they have the other sides carriers pinned down and can get their dreads in on top of them.
However there is 1 major hurdle carrier/mothership pilots will have to overcome. 1 CTD = OMGF there goes 300mil worth of fighters.

SengH.
Carriers are not immune to EW. (the smaller sized ones at least, motherships are).
That simple fact will have quite an impact on how they can be used and killed I reckon.

Edited by: SengH on 06/01/2006 09:31:08 Yeah but the ability to delegate fighters to anyone in gang in system removes almost all risk of the actual carrier/mothership being involved in any fight unless he gets probed down and doesnt keep moving safes.

Dreds + fleet = no retreat situation
Altho, i know only one good use of moros in fleet.
Make a moros total drone carrier, no guns or any of that, only tan, siege and drones.
Warp in the middle of enemy fleet in siege, while your main force is 100km away.
Go in siege and pwn butt with sentry drones!

Dreads are, what dreads are. A toy to destroy POS's. It have never been intended as a ship to pwn cruisers etc.
Once you get carriers into the game, then, maybee, the dread can be used against them. That I guess, depends on how good the siege-mode works, and if a couple of painting vigils along with some webifying BS's will be enough for the dread to pwn it's huge 'deathrays' at them in siege mode.

Carriers will change the face of Fleet Warfare forever. They are relatively cheap (600 mill to build), a 1/2 the cost of a Dread (extra 300 mill for fighters) and are the ultimate Anti BS/Fleet Warfare platform.
A 50 BS fleet will get well and truly owned by 10 bs and 3 Carriers (might not even need 3), its that lopsided.
Dreadnoughts are the only answer to such overwhelming Fleet Force, 3 Dreads in Siege would wipe the floor with 3 Carriers, and so on.
The face of Fleet warfare as we know it now, is on the verge of a very large change, those that have spent the time to understand, and develop new tactics, based upon the growing impendum of Carrier dominance, will reap a large reward, those that dont, will be left behind.
As to the original quesion, Dreads against BS are not ideal to say the least, but that was never thier intended role. Dont get me wrong, our Moros's will do a helluva lotto damage from 150km away to a BS fleet, but the reality is, if the FC knows what he is doing, It wont cost all that much in losses.
So looking forward to the next stage of Eve warfare. First Carrier kill anyone?
