Oveur's new Dev blog says it all. New blades, a new RAMSAN, server optimizations, and who knows? There may even be some new faces to go with the new hardware once everything is stable.
What are you waiting for? Give the blog a read, and come back here for comments.

64-bit client would be bad...since I imagine most still have 32-bit comps...and that will be that way for awhile.
but in any case....good job! I hope it all gets pulled off without a hitch!

I was referring to possibly the option of a 64 bit client.
I'm not exactly an expert on 64 bit and 32 bit stuff, so hopefully someone can help this one out... can 64 bit and 32 bit clients work off the same server? If so, why not make 2 clients?
......wait, I think I answered my own question.....
Patch day comes.... 2 patches have to be applied. Eww... -----

Salivates rapidly all around his minute apartment. Sounds like the transition into and from Jita is going to be somewhat alleviated by this up and coming hardware upgrade. Again you guys gives us our monies worth. All the flap about RMR will go away after the full upgrade has been completed. And kudos to all devs (especially your QA department) for keeping things on the up and up with performance related issues.
Hehe, likes the name for the next big content patch. Blood rings beautifully in my ears.

Sounds about right.
Man, the wait seems so long, now... can't wait for the new cluster to be up. WTG on this, CCP! -------------- What good are actions if there's no one to tell the tale afterward?

I did not notice anything said about the database aspect of things - are there separate dbase servers, or how is that set up?
Just asking, since in my experience the performance bottlenecks always jump back and forth between application and database; usually a round of SQL tuning follows any hardware upgrade.

Well I think it depends on which Top 500 list you are talking about. There are 2 lists to consider.
There is the list of machines ranked by raw processing power and there is a the list ranked by raw processing power but limited to machines that are actually used in a "production" environment. A large portion of the machines on the first list are built and run only as theoretical clusters to crunch numbers and don't actually do any real work. They just take up space on the list :-)
In terms of the node number, 140 seems kinda small when talking about super clusters but since it is all 64-bit I can easily see the Eve cluster on the Top 500 list of clusters that actually do work. Go CCP and EVE!
oh yeah, and my favorite part of that blog:

Certainly is impressive, there is no need for 64bit client and I think we sould all take the stand point that'll be rather rough for a while once done.....at least that way you can be happy when it goes better than you actually expected.
BTW it is ware ----------- That's twice....most probably be three times by next week. |

I dont know what the code of EVE is like, but i think this is mostly due to the different architecture of the AMD and Intel cpus.
Probably the exteremely deep pipeline and off-chip memory controller of the Xeons is limiting the instructions per cycle, and from those figures i would guess that the EVE server code benefits a lot from on-chip memory controller and the much smaller pipeline of Opterons, as well as their higher power / MHz.
Which architecture goes better mostly comes down to how well branch prediction can work on the code, and the percentage of cache hits vs memory reads, and seeing as the eve server is in stackless python and "micro-threaded" to use eve devspeak, i would guess the answer is "not very well" and "low".
I wonder why they didnt go dual-core though, most tests show that dual-core is up to 15% faster than 2 separate cores of the same speed due to better communication between the CPUs. ------------- Please fix the EW stacking bug, it's a disgrace!
