I activate AB in bursts, I only really use it to collect loot after a mission or need to get in range (40km). For the Invulnerability Fields, I turn it on when I see missiles coming at me. I turn it off when the enemy sucks at damaging me like drones or I turn it off when I'm waiting for reinforcements to come. I don't leave the shield booster on either, I do that in bursts as well.

Highs:
3 'Malkuth' Assault Launchers (Bloodclaws) 2 'Malkuth' Heavy Launchers (Scourges, for those pesky cruisers and stations so you can stay out of range)
Mids:
1 10MN AB 1 Large Subordinate Shield Extender 1 Large Shield Booster (Named if you can fit it, go for reduced CPU more than anything) 1 Shield Boost Amplifier 1 Passive Kinetic Screen (swap with Thermal when needed)
Lows:
2 Power Diagnostic Unit Is
This can handle all L2 missions without blinking. Don't even bother to use the AB except for picking stuff up, you can literally just sit still in space and kill everything as they come to you. Hit the shield booster at the point at which you reach 50% shielding, and let it run until either your shields are back to full or you run out of cap. By the time you get back to 50% shielding you'll have 3/4 cap restored.

I've had great success with:
5x Malkuth Assault Launchers
2x Large Shield Extender 1x Afterburner 1x Invulnerability Shield 1x Medium Shield Booster
2x PDU
I've only had the Caracal for a short while, but compared to my old Brutix, I'm destroying these L2 missions. (Not that I had all that much trouble with the Brutix, other than those webbing interceptors which refused to come anywhere near my guns optimal range and are too strong for my drones to take down. I'd eventually get them, but the ammo cost was nuts. I like missiles better, no more "Miss, Miss, Miss, No Damage, Miss, Miss...")
I've yet to take on the mission where they put you up against those three ECM Heavy Missile firing cruisers. I'll likely have to switch to Heavy Launchers for that one, but the Moa in "Silence the Informant" was cake.

PVE setup
5 Limos Heavy Launcher
2 Active Hardeners (NPC damage type related) 1 Medium Azeotropic Ward Salubrity I (named extender) 1 Medium Clarity Ward Booster I (Named booster) 1 10MN AB
1 BCS 1 PDS
Works very well... i hardly have to boost shields at all until after the battle. However... its **** for PVP :/ Your cap, with suffcient skills, should allow you to run the hardeners indefinately at around 75-80% cap, and adding with the afterburner to the hardeners, should give you sustained 45-50% cap. Ofcourse, you should save up cap for the sheild booster just in case your shields get around to 30%, but otherwise, if you're fighting a battle that's easy, or the enemy cant catch up to you for some reason, feel free to keep the AB on...
I tried converting it to a PVP... but it didnt work so well :/ anyone's got any suggestions?

I was always a big fan. With MK II it got good, instead of just average ;).
Setup: 5x heavy launchers 1xAB, 1x Large shield extender, 1x sensor booster, 2x shield hardeners (Kin/therm for guristas/serps, 2x BCS

2x Power Diag I

o by the way, the setup i mentioned can take on spawns of 3 195k battlecruisers, requiring only maybe 1 cap-load of shield boosting. anything below that, the boost is often not needed at all until after the combat is over. I use the setup with the spicific named items cus my cpu and grid gets pretty close... both in the 90%s... you might be able to change some of the modules for something else, but, i havent quite tried yet :P

L2 missions are like 98% frigs, go with an all-assault setup unless you know you'll be facing tough cruisers:
5x Limos Assault with Bloodclaw
Afterburner, Medium Sh.Booster, Large Shield Extender, 2x hardeners as needed
2xBallistic control

Just gotten into the Caracal setup is as follows: Hi 2 x Upgraded Limos Std Launcer 3 x TE-2100 Std Launcher (missiles changed to suit enemy)
Mid Sensor Booster I Monopropellant I Hydrazine Booster Either 3 x Med F-59 Regolith Shield Induction or 1 x Med F-59 Regolith Shield Induction 2 slots set up to tank depending on enemy
Low 2 x Power Diagnostic System I(until I can swap one/both for ballistic control)
It's more than enough for lvl 2 missions and I'm loving it so far :) |

For NPCs (0.0 ratting usually) I use:
.5 x Heavy Launcher Is (would get named or T2 but can't find any in 0.0) .10MN AB .Medium Shield booster .Heat Dissapation I .Photon scattering I .Sensor Booster I .Ballistic control unit .Co-processor (if you have named launchers you could replace this with another BCS)
I find this works very well and it is possible to take on 2xBCs and 2xCruisers with ease. I've also tanked a BS in it, but it was a stalemate couldn't quite break his shield tank with launchers.

hmm OTOH
hi: 5x assault launchers you like med: 10mn ab, 3x hardener, 1 large shield extender t2 low: 2x pds
hardeners run infinite, use ab when needed, shoot anything in range
should be possible even with low fitting skills, as assaults use low pg.

Hi all !
i play since one month and i'd like to optimize my caracal. For the moment, my fit is :
- 1 Heavy Launcher (Havoc) - 2 Malkuth Assault (Bloodclaw + Sabretooth) - 2 Railgun 150 (Iridium)
- AB 10 - EM Hardener - Medium Shield Boost - Electronic Burst
- Warp core Stab - Cargo Expander
All in tech 1 of course. And i've some question about changes... I would like to play solo mission lvl 1/2, PvE only (for the moment)...
1/ Seems mixing Rail and Missile is nothing else than an error. Do you think it's better to fit with full-missile like 2 Heavy and 3 Assault ?
2/ Where can i find infos about which missile use against different NPC ? Why nobody seems to use Sabretooth ? It's a good weapon against shield at first look...
3/ I'd like to replace my AB with a MWD. Is it a good deal ?
Many thanks for your help !

The last setup seems... Hmm... Not too efficient (though fitting is fun!!)
guns on the caracal is just crazy... assault launchers hit much better and your ship gives bonus to these!!
With a target painter Heavy Missiles becomes very efficient all-round against both frigs and cruisers...
I use: 5 x Heavy Launchers AB, Med SB, Invulnerability Field, Medium Shield Extender (Large if it fits!!) and Target Painter Ballistic Control System and Singnal Amplifier (faster an dlonger targeting for rhose heavy missiles) in lows Dont forget 2 light drones to help against frigs...
Normally on Lv2 missions I'd swap 2-3 heavies for assault launchers because you get lots of frigs and only 1-2 cruisers - that should definately give you powergrid for a large shield extender Only use the painter if you have more than 2 heavies - otherwise try a shield or cap recharger or perhaps a sensor booster to free a low slot for another Ballistic Control System

1. always try to fit your ship to utilise the bonuses. caracal has only missile bonuses, no sense to fit guns. I do not like to mix missile types, but experiment and see what suits you best.
2. partialy same a 1, caracal has kinetic missile damage bonus. right missile for right npc, well eve-search.com :-) usualy ppl using caracals fight guristas that are generaly weak to kinetic so you get a double advantage (ship bonus+enemy weaknes)
3. if you are doing deadspace missions, mwd won't work in deadspace so not a good idea. also mwd will lower the already low caracal capacitor and the speed increase is imho not worth it. ------------------------------ Removed due to offensive content - Laqum

Edited by: Aurael Drakewing on 15/03/2006 17:30:58 No real reason to fit WCS unless you're PVPing or going thru low-sec systems. For 0.5+ mission running/ratting, it's pretty much just a wasted slot.
What I use (almost 4mil SP): Ratting/Mission (can do a few lvl 3s) Highs: 2 Malkuth or better heavys (Scourge) 3 Limos assault (Bloodclaws) Mids: Named med shield booster large shield extender 2x rat-specific hardners (Kin/Therm for Serp/Guristas) named Cap Recharger or med Cap Battery Lows: BCS PDU
High-sec miner defense (0.5+): High: 5 Limos assault (Bloodclaws) Med: 2x rat-specific hardners 3x named Shield Rechargers (passive tank FTW) Lows: BDC PDU

Ok for the WCS but I've lost 2 cruisers last month against players with BS and warp jammers... and one time in a 0.6 system... so i prefeer now have this kind of item onboard, even if, like you say, it's a waste of slot.
Sorry for this stupide question, but what's PDU ?

Listen, all the cool kids write pds wrong.
Because every time they do it they can explain to the greenhorns, that back then the item was named power diagnostic unit (pdu) and then was changed to power diagnostic system (pds).
But all battle hardened vets like it to call the things with their old and familiar names and that¦s why they still say pdu.
(Tbh I don¦t think this thing was ever called pdu. Probably just some kind of "urban legend".)

just to comment on the mid slots, ab, 2 rat specific hardeners, booster or large shield extender (what you prefer). the last slot is a problem, I would go with a cap battery if you go the booster way or a target painter/sensor booster if you go the extender way. also a 3rd hardener comes in handy sometimes. ------------------------------ Removed due to offensive content - Laqum

This setup has dealt with any lvl2's thrown at it, plus a reliable backup to corp-mates on lvl3's.
Highs- 5 Malkuth heavy launchers (usually loaded with scourge, change as req.)
Meds- 1 T2 med booster 1 med extender 2 amps/hardeners (tend to use kin/therm) 1 10mn Ab
Lows- 2 PDU
As yet untested on solo lvl3's or PvP. As my tanking skills improve I'm looking at possibility of a large extender rather than the med one.

Edited by: Char Aznable on 21/03/2006 12:03:31 This is my setup: Hi: 5 x Limos Heavy Launchers
Medium: YS-8 Hydrocarbon AB 2 x passive hardeners OR 1 x passive hardener + FS-9 Regolith medium shield extender Medium C5-L Emergency Shield Overload booster Alumel Wired I Sensor Augmentation
Lo: Ballistic Control System I Type D Altered SS Nanofiber Structure
I've built this ship for speed (my Nav and other speed altering skills are high) in order to control the range. It can outrun just about anything except interceptors and some of the quickest NPC ships, and hit them from a huge distance, meaning I rarely have to deal with frigates close in. The passive tank means I don't have to worry about cap.
I can solo any L3 in this without a problem (with the sole exception of when I'm facing multiple sentry guns), although it takes some hit & run strategy, warping in/out, although I only have 700k SP at the moment.
Deadspace when I'm forced to warp close to the swarms can be an annoyance but I can quickly get out of range - or failing that, fire a few volleys and get the heck out of there.

I've been running this set up for about 1 1/2 months with about 550K missile skills. Strictly for PvE.
HI
5 Limos Assaults / 3 Heavy, 2 Assaults / 5 Heavy (Depends on situation)
MID
1 Named Lg Extender 1 Lg Extender or Active Hardner 1 Named Invulnerability Field 1 10 NM AB 1 Passive EM Hardener Misc Module
LO
1 BCS 1 Cap Recharger
I swap modules around as I think I need, and I am currently using this set up for level 3 missions. I have only had real problems with TS, but need to keep careful tabs on shields and armor and be ready to warp out, sometimes more than once during a mission. This set up can suffer a bit with DPS for Level 3's, so I have to keep that in mind when preparing for missions.
It can run indefinitely with the AB and Invul. field both active. I can swap the AB for another hardener and run two.
I generally engage at about 45-55k and try to maintain that distance. The distance, combined with the shield tank make for generally successful missions.

For lvl2 missions you have to fit a caracal very badly to die :D anyway i use -5x assault launchers (heavies are just plain stupid for lvl2) -3x sensor booster, 2x large shield extender -1x shield power relay, 1x cap power relay
Yeah it's slow(i do not collect loot from lvl2 missions), but it locks fast I think thats all.

Edited by: Merin Ryskin on 28/04/2006 21:49:21 From my experience...
High: 3x heavy launcher (whatever you can afford), 2x assault launcher (whatever you can afford).
Mid: Target painter, sensor booster, whatever else you feel like. Shield booster and two extenders in my case, but they're pretty much irrelevant.
Low: BCU, whatever.
3x heavy launchers give you nice sniping firepower, and the pair of assault launchers are death on the few scattered frigates that ever get into range. Your heavy missiles will easily out-range the ship's un-modified maximum targeting range, so you need the sensor booster to take advantage of it. That's a big problem I'm seeing in most of the setups posted here, you aren't using your ship effectively if you don't have a sensor booster fitted.
But really, like mr devast said, you have to fit it really badly to die to level 2 missions. You have such a huge range advantage, exploit it. 70% of the missions shouldn't even put a single hit on your shields. Meanwhile pretty much any weapon setup is going to kill your targets in a salvo or two.

This is almost exactly my setup and almost all L2 missions were trivial (Illegal Activity 3 and killing the Officer to get the pass was the only tough one I remember but that's just use AB to close the distance while tanking) with less than 1M SP, even.

Yet another Cara fit, been running this for about 2 weeks.
Highs: 3x Limos heavy, 2x SV-2000 assault Mids: 1x large shield boost, 1x T2 AB, 1x "extron" target painter, 1x T2 med booster, 1x resist mod (varies, active rat-specific or invul depending on how I feel that mission) Lows: 1x PDU, 1xBCU Drones: 2 lights, damage type for whatever rats
I _could_ squeeze more heavies in there, but I like 2 assaults for those times when there's a lot of stuff with sub-75 meter sig. I can run the invul and AB indefinitely, or cut the AB and pulse the booster if needed, which is rarely. I could also pull the painter for more tank, but I don't ever get below 50%, and frigs don't like heavies when they're covered in paint. Generally, I'm able to just sit wherever I started, fry everything, and start running down cans when about half the hostiles are dead.

I see that most of you use shield boosters with assault missile setup... that is not needed at all and you waste one slot to that booster.
Caracal has a severe cap penalty so if you go with assault on it i leaves enough cpu/grid for a good all out passive tank that will beat any booster tank.
Hi: 5xAssault launchers
Mid: 2xLarge Shield extender II (or named), 2 shield resistance amps to fit npc's, 10Mn AB
Low: 2xNanofiber internal struct
This is a pure passive tank and you get ~6500 shield with 20hp/sec passive recharge.
If you need better tank or damage replace nanos in low with PDU's or BCU's
I use Nanos since it almost warps as a frig and goes 570m/s with AB nonstop. You kill all npc's so fast you want the ship to be fast so you get back to your agent quick for another assignment.
Best PvE cruiser out there? I think so.

What I use (almost 4mil SP): Ratting/Mission (can do a few lvl 3s) Highs: 2 Malkuth or better heavys (Scourge) 3 Limos assault (Bloodclaws) Mids: Named med shield booster large shield extender 2x rat-specific hardners (Kin/Therm for Serp/Guristas) named Cap Recharger or med Cap Battery Lows: BCS PDU

I can see you've never been warp scrambled in .2 space. I barely got out alive!. But I did.

I'm going to try posting again.
I am ratting in low sec space with the caracal....and it seems to work fine, except that one time when I was warp scrambled. someone said their caracal goes 503 m/3...well, mine does 1003 m/s, and one of my corp mates told me that before the nerfs caracals would do insane speeds like 2500 n/s. Right now I can use the ab to pick up loot because I always overshoot the can.
I like the speed, and it allows me to go far from home looking for rats.

I really, really like the Caracal, for everything. I'm just now coming in from 0.0 space to try out some missions and stuff for a little while (I was in my current corp and living in 0.0 space before my trial membership was up, lol), get my standings up. Has anyone tried running lvl 3's in it, and is it possible? I can fly either a ferox or a raven, and I'm sure I can do them in those, but I'd like to try them in a Caracal, for the challenge if nothing else.
Suggestions? Is it possible?

I've yet to take on the mission where they put you up against those three EMP Heavy Missile firing cruisers. I'll likely have to switch to Heavy Launchers for that one, but the Moa in "Silence the Informant" was cake.
i have found this setup good for all lvl two missions and some lvl 3 as well!
I use a slight variation of this setup.
I use 4x Malkuth assault launchers, 1x heavy (malkuth) launcher, 2x large extenders, 1x med booster, AB, and a hardener (my preference is for a passive general hardener, but you can do active, too), along with a BDU and PDU. It just barely fits in, but it works very well. TS1 and TS3 were a breeze, and I can get through the one with three cruisers launching EM heavies in one shot, without dipping into armor at all.
Dalyn - use something similar, but with T2 extenders and booster. If you could do 5x assaults, one T2 extender, you might be able to cram in a large booster instead of medium, and a cap recharger to go along with it. I'm not sure if that would be more effective or not. Definitely not a PvP setup, either.

Mine is
HI: 5 Light Missles(depends on available isk)
MID: 1 After Burner(T2 or named if possile, I use a T2 and so far have never ran out of cap while in a mission, even after I left the ship outside a station with the AB on for an hour.. this is skill dependant though) 4 large sheild Extenders(again, depends on ISK/skills. I use 5 T2's, with a total of 12,003 yes 12K sheilds)
LOWS: 2 PDS's(PDU's)
this is a straight passive setup. I use like missles as they hit everthing you'll find in lvl 2 missions. the passive tank will work on all missions.
I get 43.8 Sheild points regened each second.. this is a great tank coupled with the total sheild points.
This isn't the cheapest setup if you go for T2 gear.. but it's simple and effective.

lol, def not. for roaming pvp/homeland security type stuff i use this setup. it RAPES inties. w/ my skills, i can shoot the assaults over 50 km as well. hehehe . . .
5x assault (t1, or whatever named i have on hand)
1x t2 extender 1x t2 sensor booster 1x web 1x scram 1x sensor damper/racial ecm/tracking disruptor/something like that
2x bcu 2--if in hostile wates sometimes wcs's as well. and dont even bring up honor or pvper codes or **** like that. save that for empire epeening, lol.
for fleet support (and i do a lot of that as well, god knows), i generally use heavy launchers, more ecm, and no tank. usually some sort of cap suplement to keep the ecm's running. wont keep up w/ the bb's and scorps, but every little bit helps.

I don't understand how you can fit 4 T2 large extenders on there, with engineering at 5, adv weapon upgrades at 4, shield upgrades at 5 and the two T2 PDU's, it still only leaves room for 3 T2 large extenders with 78 power left. It would be more than possible to stick a T2 medium extender in that last slot though, just not sure about a 4th large extender.

It is no problem sticking 4xLSE II's on a caracal. Just remember he is using standard launchers not assault launchers. Which can be a valid chooice due to the immense shields. I would go: 4xTe-2100 standards 1xAss Launcher any kind
Mid: 4xLSEII 1xInvul field(or ratspific, but actually its better to skip one extender and put two specific hardeners in instead, but then upping more standard launcher->assaults )
Low: 2xBCU
Anyhow, if anyone have problems with a lvl 2 mission in a caracal you've done something horribly wrong. Go for lvl3's and you will be challenged and actually get something fun out the time invested in the game, lvl2s are like mining in 1.0 (Do note I say nothing bad about mining lowsec (: )

Edited by: Hoshi Mandella on 26/05/2006 02:03:16 I was under the impression he was using assaults, he just said 5xlight missiles. in that case it isnt impossible, for sure. of course 3xlarge extenders still isnt that bad if you're getting a sizeable RoF bonus in return. use that last slot for a shield recharger or even just a medium extender. still lots of shielding.
I guess dropping AB on a caldari ship isn't a big deal, since they get the lowest returns out of them (which brings my attention to the caldari ship mass thread..)

High: 4x `Malkuth` heavy launchers (scourge of course) 1x `Malkuth` assult (helps wi some frigates) Medium: Med shield Booster II 10Mn Afterburner Large F-S9 Regolith Shield Extender Non-inertial ballistic screen augmentation Ditrigonal thermal barrier crystalization Low: Power diagnostic system Beta Hull Mod Overdrive injector
this is my setup for Lvl 3's, currently trying guristas extraveganza, cleared 1st area ! tend to use the two hardeners on repeat as i arrive in an area, AB out to atleast 45km (if nessesary), use booster if i get several heavy hits, ive taken 5 guristas moa based cruisers at once wi this, as the overdrive makes me a little faster, just keep out o their turret range. problems only arise in deadspace where i arrive within 10km of several cruisers......thats what the AB is for..... Anyone got any simmilar setups, or major suggestions

I've been ratting in .2 sec Amarr space for a few weeks and i've found the setup i have lets me survive fairly well against whatever those blood raiders throw at me.
4 x Heavy Launchers with Widowmakers 1x Assault Launcher for those pesky 10-15k frigs or whatever they are teamed with a medium scout drone Med Slots - Invul field, passive EM hardener, shield recharger, large shield extender and target painter Low Slots - power diagnostic and cpu booster
I've repeatedly taken groups of 3 190k blood seer battlecruisers taking only 30-50% shield damage.
One caveat is that it's a must to maintain at least 30km on your target or the heavy lasers start eating you. Also collecting the loot takes like 10 mins :)

My low skill setup
High 3x assault launchers (For frigates) 2x heavy launchers (For cruisers)
Mid 2x Large shield extenders 2x Rat specific hardeners 1x Invulnerability field
Low 2x PDS
This setup allows me to tank most level 2 missions. Had a shield booster for awhile on this setup but it just drained all my cap without boosting my shields strength by much since i have 5500 shield points with this setup. Invulnerability shield works much better.

Excellent Low-Skill Newbie Setup
5x Malkuth Assault Missiles 1x 10mn AB 1x Medium Shield Booster 3x Large Shield Extender I 2x Reaction Control Unit I
It's relatively cheap for an initial starter-setup while you get Hardeners and more skills. I had to train Tactical Shield Manipulation I to get a slight energy grid increase to make this all fit, but it was fast.
The booster is for quick repairing and emergency regen. The AB is just useful for short bursts when needing distance, and for looting.
This setup is excellent in L2 missions so far, allowing you to just literally take on frigates head-on without worrying about range for now.

The "penalty" simply refers to the fact that after the first unit you fit, any additional modules will be less effective. See also this thread: http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=351771

A noob question - I've noticed that a lot of people include an extender in their setup, what's the purpose of an extender when you're using active tanking? Wouldn't it be better to fit another hardener/boost amplifier/cap recharger instead?

seriously, wtf lol... I mean any cruiser is superoverkill for any level 2, this is highly evident from the setups here... There is no reason in this world to put assaults on a cara... I dont know why the hell anyone does. Hell, you should never be in range to use the damn things.
I rushed for a cara when I started my account, took me a week or something i think to get. Great ship, but you have to know how to use it, and if you're putting assaults on it, you clearly have no clue, and probably never will because like i said it's easy no matter what setup you use.
However later in life you might actually want to do some l3s with a cara or 0.0 rat, or run some cosmos and you'll have to learn how to actually play. The cara's survivability is from it's high damage output at range, if you arent using this, you are not flying correctly.
Dont fly without 5 heavies, a ab, and a sensor booster. The rest is up to you once you have those, but if you're wondering, this is my setup:
5 heavies
med sb 2 hards ab sensor booster
bcu nanofibre
I used to fly 2 bcu but one day tried the nanofibre and the sirvivability it provides is more than worth the minor damage hit.

Low 2x ballistic control system
Handles all missions without any problems. For the mission where you have to kill 3 mercenaries and a named, make sure to fit EM resists (or just warp out after killing the first mercenary and recharge).
I usually put 2 launchers on 1 enemy, 3 on another and fly from can to can to collect the loot while the missiles shoot :P

There is no reason in this world to put assaults on a cara... I dont know why the hell anyone does. Hell, you should never be in range to use the damn things.
Three reasons:
1) Light missiles kill the frigate hordes faster, because of the higher rate of fire and better precision. Sure, heavies will do the job, but the assault launchers are just more efficient.
2) Staying that far away is just silly. The Caracal can easily tank every level 2 mission at close range if set up properly. Using the full range advantage of heavy missiles just means a lot more time spent looting. It's more efficient to warp in as close as possible, so the cans are nice and tightly grouped.
3) Assault launchers have much lower fitting needs, making it easy to fit a huge tank even with poor skills. With all that extra grid, you can make a purely passive tank, then just go afk with FoF missiles and come back to pick up the loot.

When you get some extra isk stored up try this: Highs 5 x Dread Gurista Heavy Launchers [Fury or Precision Missiles](type based on mission)
Meds 1 x Medium Shield Booster II (if you have lots of extra isk I suggest this become a Small Gistii X-type) 3 x Racial Hardeners II 1 x Dread Gurista Shield boost Amp
Lows 1 x Dread Gurista BCU 1 x PDU II
This set-up will probably run you somewhere between 375-500m isk, but it will transfer nicely into your cerberus, which is awesome for running level 4 missions. (easier than a raven imo) |

30/72/58/44 resists, 52 shield/s peak regen, regens cap faster than it uses it. That should make L2's pretty ridiculously easy. :P

(easier than a raven imo)
Such a waste of a ship... at least put that on a Navy Caracal!
As for regular setups... 5x heavies or assaults. With heavies and a LOT of careful warping, you can do any level 3 mission. You have 90km missile range, USE IT.

Like I said, it's not cheap, but it's gear that will go a long way with you, be it Navy Caracal, or Cerberus.

One rather major problem I noticed now: faction weapons are NOT T2, and can not use T2 ammo. So you'll have to drop the style points and get some T2 launchers to use those nice missiles.

Edited by: ****in Rats on 14/04/2007 07:42:46 Edited by: ****in Rats on 14/04/2007 07:42:31 I honed my Caracal setup to the following throughout the time I used it, completing many missions with incredible ease. The only level 2 that I can't simply sit there and laugh at the rats is that one mission that spawns in a multitude of waves one after another that takes a good half hour or hour to complete and by the time you're done you used close to a thousand missiles. That one requires me to kite the cruisers a little. Just a little. :D
5x 'Arbalest' Assault Missile Launcher (these are pretty cheap and can produce incredible DPS for their price)
2x Subordinate Screen Stabilizer I (best T1 extender I know of and I'm pretty sure they're <500k each. 2x Active Rat-specific Hardeners (usually I just keep thermal and kinetic equipped since those seem to be the most common pirates in Caldari missions - I generally won't bother going back to refit after learning what I'm fighting because the missions are incredibly easy anyway) 1x Medium C5L Emergency Shield Overload I (Same boost/sec as the T2 but 80% as efficient. The name fits it well - I only use it when I can tell I really need a boost)
2x Ballistic Control Unit I (All the others seem to be ridiculously expensive for the minimal improvements they give over the basic unit. These things give a significant DPS improvement for their cost. You won't likely need the PDSes to fit all of this, but if you do need a little extra powergrid I recommend the Local Power Plant Manager: Diagnostic System I - it offers a good boost over the base model for fairly cheap)

hi fellas. i'm noobie and this is probably a poor question but i've been through the player guide and can't figure out the missile range vs skill and ship bonuses. i just got my paws on a caracal recently and took a couple of flights only to realise i had no idea what i was doing on my range settings!
so, if you'll humor me, i know the caracal gives a 20% bonus to missile velocity per level. so that's 40% if i'm level ii on caldari cruiser. i factor that in first to the missile velocity. (A)
I have missile bombardment 5 - so that's 50% to missile flight time. (B)
multiply the velocity by the flight time (A*B) should give me the missile's range right?

Show Info on your ship (Right click it) and look under the modules tab. Click the blue I for information on the missiles themselves. All information represents YOUR current skills. Multiply flight time by velocity and there ya go. Thats YOUR effective range.

Build a caracal, flew it for two days, sold it.
The sensor level is to low, you spend to much time relocking against EW mission rats.
Use a Blackbird, 3 assult racks are plenty, a spare hole for a slavager. Sensor up the whazoo
bigger shields, faster, and a lot more or everything.

Why such support for the assault launchers? Using quickfit, it shows that you get roughly twice the DPS with heavy launchers. Is there something I'm not getting here?

Easier to pop frigs in an assault launcher I'd wager - sig radius reduces the dps on heavies vs frigs quite a bit. Personally, I use heavies anyways, and trained the missile precision skill. _______________ Hope is the first step on the road to dissapointment.

Med: 1xLarge Shield Extender I 3xMedium Shield Extender I
Low: 1x PDS (mark i generator refitting: diagnostic system)
It can get damaged when fighting 3 BC's but copes fine with 2, might be worth swapping an extender for a booster ?

Though heavy missiles do twice the damage the heavy launcher has only half the fireing rate. The only advantage of heavys over light missiles is their range. But since the Caracal has a 10% range bonus on light missiles you get a decent range already (~30km).
In fact, all weapons do about the same damage in EVE. The difference is only in the range.

Osmond: you should go and spend some trainig on missile bombardment and missile projection skills. they give 10% per level to missile speed and flight time, iirc, and seriously extend your caracal effective range.
I'd like to submit my caracal to the forums and see what you think of this setup.
It's for level 2 missions and ratting, and it's like this:
Highs: 3x named assault bays 2x named heavy bays
Meds: 2x Large shield extenders 1x Invul field 1x Medium shield booster 1x Sensor Booster
Lows: 2x BCU
-or-
1x BCU 1x PDS
----
The damage output is quite traditional, two heavies for heavy stuff and three assaults for frigates/destroyers. The mids are a mix of passive tanking, active resisting/boosting and sensor boosting to match the lock range with the heavy missiles range (ranges for this set are ~95km locking range, 82,5km for heavy missiles and 38km for the assaults, with bombardment 4 and projection 3 - caldari cruisers 3). I get some hundreds over 6k shields, regen in 760 seconds circa (that's about 9.02 shields per second). It looks like a decent tank to me, but it might just be a noobish impression, so feel free to bash the setup.
Lows are just a casual choice, obviously one should go for 2 BCUs, but that PDS gives a nice extra shields/pgrid and regenerations overall.
There's no L2 i can't tank/chew through, and rats (even tho i rarely took the ship out into <0.4 space) give no problem, though i use to go out for the bigger ones with 5x heavies if i can.

Heres my variation:
High: 5x Malkuth/Limos Assault Launchers with Light Bloodclaw missiles Med: 10MN AB, Medium Shield Booster I, 2 x Medium Shield Extender, and 1 Cap Injector Low: 2x Ballistic Control Units
Having 2 shield extenders gives me a decent amount of tank (allowing me to warp off if it goes badly) and the cap injector is a reasonably cheap way of keeping my cap topped up (most L2 missions drop plenty of cap charges to use).
When faced with multiple cruisers I just warp out, swap 2 assault launchers for heavy launchers with scourge missiles (I always keep the spares in my cargohold) and then warp back to mop up the cruisers.

Hi all,
I'm just putting my rig together but don't seem to be able to get everything on due to the power grid not being able to take it. What I'm trying to fit is:
High: 5 x Malkuth Heavy Assault Launcher
Medium: 10 MN AB C5-L Emergency Shield Shield Boost Amplifier 1 Large Subordinate Screen Stabiliser
Low: 2 x Power Diagnostic Units
And that's without fitting the final medium slot which I haven't decided on yet.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can increase my Power Grid capacity?

Insane L2 killing machine with omfgexpensive mods.
5x CN Assault Launcher w/CN Bloodclaw, 1x Auto Targeter I (needs Multitasking I for it to be of any use) 2x CN Invul, 3x LSE-II 2x CN BCU 3x Purger II rigs
Substitute CN for T2, or T2 for named T1 if skills or wallet don't allow it.
Replace invul for mission-specific hards or BCUs for SPRs (and maybe active hards for passive resistance amps) if you want a better tank and don't care that much about damage. Add HMLs/Scourge instead of Assault/Bloodclaw if grid allows (don't bother fiting PDUs instead of BCUs). Get a Caracal Navy Issue for extra style points (add 2x SPR-II or best named for ubertanking boost) and easier grid fiting. _

Well i checked in EFT with maxed skills you would be getting near to 730 MW in caracal with 2 PDU. And you should switch the 1 Large Subordinate Screen Stabiliser with Best named i.e. 1 Large F-S9 Regolith Shield Induction, it's not much difference of price. Plus other things to best named if there is not much difference of price or if you can afford them. Now on last mid slot, you can put whatever you need like warp disruptor if you are going for pvp or cap boosters for running your AB and SB.

I'm having trouble with the L2 mission Recon (1 of 3), and thought a refit of my trusty Caracel might do the trick. I was thinking something like this:
'Malkuth' Assault Missile Launcher I [63xBloodclaw Light Missile] 'Malkuth' Assault Missile Launcher I [63xBloodclaw Light Missile] 'Malkuth' Assault Missile Launcher I [63xBloodclaw Light Missile] Advanced 'Limos' Heavy Missile Bay I [33xScourge Heavy Missile] Advanced 'Limos' Heavy Missile Bay I [33xScourge Heavy Missile]
Heat Dissipation Field I Ballistic Deflection Field I Shield Boost Amplifier I Medium Shield Booster II Invulnerability Field I
Capacitor Power Relay I Capacitor Power Relay I
1719 shield, 4.05/s, E/T/K/Ex=25/68/76/69 1055 armor, E/T/K/Ex=59/44/25/10 1168.75 cap, +13.04/s, -28.0/s 224.0 m/s 55.3 DPS
Two large bays to deal with cruisers, three assaults to crush the frigs and dessies. Kinetic missiles since I'm dealing with Guristas. That part seems pretty solid.
I'm having some trouble with the mid section. The current setup 2 NPC specific hardeners (Kin/Therm, currently T1 but will probably be named), a Med Booster II and an Invulnerability field. I wasn't sure what to put in the last slot so I put a shield boost amp there for now. I'm thinking a cap recharger or a shield extender could do well here. Any input on this would be great. Not too sure about the Invuln field either since this might be a little heavy on the ol' cap. I might go with passive shield resistance modules instead.
Lows are capacitor power relays at the moment. If I do drop the shield boost amp and invuln field for passive resists I could put BCU's here. Or one relay and one BCU.
Any advice here would be very welcome.

Just lost my Caracal after multiple tries of this mission - L2 Caldari Recon (1 of 3) so the guys were Guristas (Dire Pithiums). 4 Dire Pithium Nullifiers (cruisers with jammers, yay) and a few others waiting 10km off the warp-in point makes for few opportunities to whittle them down. After much gnashing of teeth and refits in EFT, I found a blog that indicated that this mission is meant to be run and no gun. As are the two missions that follow it.
So swap in a 10MN AB I or your favorite speed mod and hit the gas.

Heatsink ? It is not a good idea. I would suggest passive tanked caracal for lvl2 missions. Something like: 2x Ballistic Control System II 10MN Afterburner II 2xLarge Shield Extender II 2x rat specific hardeners 5xAssault Missile Launcher II
t2 where available. If not - just use arbalest launchers and best named extenders. For investigate the ruins just fit 2xistab in lows and warp away as soon as rats appear.

I'm pretty new to the game, I'm on day 5 of my trial, and only have 935K sp. But this is my Caracal setup. I think it's decent for the low skills needed, and I haven't had any problems on L2 missions yet. So it's late at night, I've done a pretty hefty mission/salvage grind, was ending the night toying around with my Caracal to see what I could make it do. Ended up with this, it's a pretty ridiculous tank, and the damage isn't the greatest, but it made me smirk.
Highs: 5x Arbalest Assault Launchers
Mids: 3x Large Shield Extender II 1x Invulnerability Field I 1x Shield Recharger II
Lows: 1x Type D Power Core Modification: Shield Power Relay 1x Type D Power Core Modification: Power Diagnostic System
Drone Bay: 2x Hobgoblin 1s
Resists are weak I know, the invulnerability field helps a bit. Ended up with 10,326 Shields with a 658 sec recharge.
Haven't gotten any really really big spawns yet, but all the L2's (from a quality 18 agent) I tried this out on were funny. So far, you could literally fall asleep during an L2 and have no problem. I'll let ya know if i run into any problematic missions though.
Cheers!

So swap in a 10MN AB I or your favorite speed mod and hit the gas.
haha, I spent last night doing/learning the same thing. I actually managed to shoot everything in recon-1, after 3 repair runs and oodles of cap200's / missiles. Made a loss on the mission.
Was reading around it and realised I coulda just run!
Erm - guys - For Lvl 2 Recon, park your Caracal in the hanger, take out a 9k isk shuttle and you can do parts 1 and 2 without getting below 50% shields - and that faster then with the cruiser with AB. And for part 3, even without a AB you can walk the Caracal to the gate with a T1 setup.

This setup tanks about 115 DPS in full passive setup (yes, even with active hardeners it's a passive setup). Completely cap stable.
The exact same setup I used when doing lvl2's. It totally owns lvl 2 missions. For more damage swap out a SPR with a BCS in low, and in missions where you have to travel to gate swap out a Large Ext with a AB. For new players with crappy fitting skills swap out assault launchers with std launchers as needed.

The above setup with just a tad more skills (I flew it) with two BCS's is wicked for grinding Level II's, they don't have a chance of breaking your tank and you pump out DPS to get the Cruiser's and tech II frigates done with quick.

Thinking about going all heavy assault launchers when my shields are on par.
High: 3 x Heavy Launcher I (when kiting) 2 x XT-2800 Heavy Assault Launchers (for when kiting fails or i get bored of kiting)
Mid: 1 x Target Painter 2 x Hardeners (NPC specific) 1 x Medium Shield Booster 1 x 10mn AB
Low: 2xPower Diagnostic Systems
5 Heavy launchers = Easy but very slow. Get in and have some fun once in a while.

High - 5x Arbalest Assault Launcher (super cheap nowadays)
Mid - 10MN Afterburner (or named variant), 2x Large Shield Extender, 2x Medium Shield Extender
Low - 2x Ballistic Control System
Owns any level 2 mission, only needs Bloodclaw missiles. Works with decent fitting skills. Use named mods where possible to free up CPU, or just drop an extender.
Heavies are actually kind of a poor choice for 2s. Slower RoF and less damage to small targets which is mostly what you're fighting.

im using a caracal for missions right now and this is it's set up
5x sv assault launchers... most spawns are frigs, and the cruisers arent staying alive long enough to need my heavies put on
mids 1 large fs9 extender 1 sensor booster and a combo or 3 rechargers/resistence (im using passive's just fine)
lows 2x BCU
no rigs... i have no problems tanking any spawn solo.basicly i warp in, and sit down and roast some marshmallows

The Caracal is probably one of the best ships to run level 2's with. Back when I had a reason to run level II's I used
5x Malkuth (cause I was broke)
1x Med Extender 1x 10MN AB (named if possible) 1x Med Shield Booster 1x Sensor Booster (with range script now) 1x Cap Charger
2 BCU's
The entire fit (with the possible exception of the AB) can be upgraded to t2 and it will fit just fine. The booster in conjunction with the AB will drain the cap in about a minute but that's why you have Heavys - range is your friend in PvE. If you keep the opposing ships beyond 50k and leave the AB on (it can run forever) you can EASILY go through level 2 missions and only use a few cycles of your booster (if any).
As far as drones go, I never did use them on a caracal. For missions I'm not sure 1 med or 2 light drones will appreciably speed up the job. Maybe a logistics drone or two?

3x large azeotropic ward salubrity I (low CPU usage for passive shield tanking) 2x rat specific shield amplifiers (low skill requirements)
2x mark i generator refitting: diagnostic system (low CPU usage)
I tried heavy missile launchers, but the lvl 2 mission targets are too small for it.

4 x Assault Launchers 1 x Heavy Launcher ---- 1 x 10MN Afterburner 1 x Large Extender 1 x Medium Extender 1 x EM Resistance Amp 1 x Thermal Resistance Amp ---- 2 x Ballistic Control System
Oh, also, is Signature Radius such a big deal in PvE that using multiple Extenders is a bad idea?

All in all not a bad setup. You played to the Caracal's bonus, fit a Heavy for the extra bang against the cruiser rats, etc... Using 2 extenders is fine for L2/PvE in general. Keep yourself at range and don't be affraid to warp out if needed and your fine.
Don't forget your 10m3 of drones and your good to go. 2 light scout drones does makea difference for things that get close.

hello, i have been analyzing this post from the 1st day i got my Caracal, and Since i have no more than 2mil skill points, reading this extended my knowledge far beyond civilian modules :P to shield hardeners, ballistic controls and many more.
It all went smooth till a mission named "recon", where i had to warp out a dosen times. Having a problem with my tank, i realized that Caracal in EFT have a bonus to missile flight time, therefore a range. And with adding a scanner booster, and a Afterburner i was able to orbit and hit targets from 81km max (with higher lvl of long range targeting and ballistic fuel rig, you can fire them from 100+km)
At the end i wanted to advanced to lvl3 missions and change to battle cruiser, but my shield skills need an other week to fit the need for those, so i decided to go with Caracal just to see what can i expect inside, and its not a shame if i lose it thou.
To my surprise with the tactic i learned from Racon i was able to do all lvl3 so far, anyway you have to be a bit more careful.
(i got more or less named stuff, but all this can run with Tech I if you can fit them)
Low 2x Cross-Linked Bolt Array I Mid
Medium Peroxide I capacitor Power CellF-90 Positional Sensor SubroutinesNon-Internatl Ballistic Screen Augmentation I (or Invulnerability field, but dont expect to be hit at all, this is just for NPC cruisers that can hit you up to 80km with missiles that were so far only kinetic) Smaill Shield Booster II Y-S8 Hidrocarbon I Afterburners
High 5x Malakuth heavy missile launcher (with Scourge)
In most cases when you enter the pocket, you wont do an instant aggro, so you can put 80km distance from you and your target and fire. The problems are only guristas cruisers that can fire up to 80km, so either you can extend your range by fitting rocket fuel rig, that is quite expensive, or turn on the kinetic hardener and shied booster until you kill the cruisers.
p.s. Advance to Drake when you have the skills for it.

You might want to swap one field for a warp disrupter. And change to different Assault Launchers if you don't have the money to afford the Arbalest.

I use the above fitting except I just use Standard Assault Launchers, and I prefer 2 Shield hardeners(Mission Specific) in place of the 2 Medium Shield Extenders. Works GREAT for levels 2's. Shield Tank never ever comes close to breaking. Cheap as dirt setup.

I use:
5x Arbalest Assault Missile Launchers
1x 10MN AB II 2x Tech 2 Passive Shield Amps (I don't have CPU for active hardeners at my skill level) 2x Large Shield Extender II
2x BCU II
1x Bay Loading Accelerator 2x Hydraulic something or other that increases missile speed by 10%
--------------- Missile range is 71 km on light missiles. Targeting range is closer, so -- if I can lock it I can hit it.
Resists are in the 50% to 60% range. Not great, but sufficient for Level 2's. I have over 8000 shields, after all.

Mids are good for tank, and afterburners.
Afterburners keep npc's away, meaning they don't hurt so much.
You need more tank (shields). So At the expense of cap, you can fit a shield booster, or just a shield extender. (boosters are better if you have the cap).
To get the cap for your shield booster you can fit a capicator booster/s.
Shield hardeners are awesome too, reduce the damage you take. For missions you generall look the mission up to find out what type of resistance you should have on your shield.
Free mids - Target painter, it increases your damage to frigates and small sig ships. (or a web if you happen to get some fast drones or whatnot)
Lows - 1st low - damage control unit- will save your life. (the shield resistance isn't penalised for stacking which is nice)
2nd - whatever, need powergrid? fit a diagnostic or reacor control. damage? ballistic control unit (bcu).
rigs- generally really expencive, unless you want some shield resistance rigs and free up a mid or 2, (most caldari missions seem to do kenetic/thermal)
If you have issues with lvl 2 missions in this setup... well i dunno.

5x 'Arbalest' Assault Missile Launcher [soon to be T2]
2x Large Shield Extender II 2x Explosion Dampening Amplifier II [ANGELS] 1x Kinetic Deflection Amplifier II [ANGELS]
2x Ballistic Control System II
Obviously swap the passive shield hardners according to NPC type.
Possibly use target painter instead of a hardner.

I'd drop one shield extender for ... just about anything that uses less grid. Then i'd get rid of the RCUs in favor of Ballistic Control Units (best) or Power Diagnostic Systems.
You'll do more damage, faster, and nobody should need 3xLSE for level 2 missions :p

In general I guess it's a matter of which "evil" you prefer... slow speed and weaker damage output, vs a faster ship with less tank and better kill rate that has to warp out once or twice on the hardest of missions.
I use an active-tanked Caracal on L3 missions lobbing missiles from over 100km, and I don't mind having to warp on the harder missions. If your goal is to never warp that's cool, but I enjoy a maximized kill rate with dual BCU IIs and a tiny tank (and the occasional warp-out). I'm usually back in the fray within a 2-3 minutes and enjoying the stream of guided missile death reaching out to touch those hapless NPCs.
