Edited by: Halo Jones on 30/08/2003 08:22:48 THis morning, I was privy to watch the most disturbing change in atitude of gameplayers yet in eve.
Jim Raynor and his crew of pirates had been off hunting in fountain region, aparently destroying a few battleships, losing a blackbird of their own, and a scorpion later when ad'rena went for a ****. He reported such on irc.stratics.com#eve-online.
Subsequently someone DCC chatted with him, gained his IP, and started a player based DOS attack against his IP address.
This is purely malicious, it has no place in gameplay, or in geting back at someone for an attack. I am neither a member of venal or fountain alliances, but that behaviour is totally uncalled for, and totally unnecessary.
From what i cna tell the person who DCC to Jim Raynor was called Aona on irc, no longer traceable of course. But their Ip for the DOS attack, and port used appears to be 66.163.243.150:41618 perhaps CCP can investiagte into which player connetcs to the game from this IP, or perhaps their GBs of logs don't allow them to investigate such behaviour...
we shall have to wait and see

Pretty sad when you have to resort to that type of bull5hit. You should smear that guys name all over because gaming has no place for that behavior.

Total lamer, he contacted me on IRC as "Aona". Can't win in game, so he attacks my internet connection instead. CCP should ban him for attacking my ISP. This is total BS.

Just go to the local authorities with log of the attack. Surprisingly police actually do investigate this sorta stuff, and if it was done over state lines, will up the case to the appropiate federal authority. If it has an IP, they will trace and find the person. ------------------------------------

Yes this fella is probably way too stupid to be untraceable :) It's actually a bother to be untraceable, so most script kiddies are very easy to catch. And police and ISPs do care. And will help you if you go about asking the right way.

The person responsible must be made an example of by ccp. A banning and the players name released ought to do it.

More than baning from Eve that lamer should get a knock on the door from the authorities.

It's a good thing I wasn't logged in Eve when this crap started or I'd be petitioning for reimbursement of my ship, I bet.

Edited by: Entity on 30/08/2003 10:16:44 Ugh, was just waiting for something like this to happen. I suggest that people do not accept DCC Chats from people you don't know/trust. I never do anyway, a simple private msg sufficient in most cases.

For reasons such as this, is why i never use IRC.
Noticed as of several years ago, what a hacker's playground it was, no matter how useful it may for chatting. It needs to be reasonable secure first |

Edited by: Jim Raynor on 30/08/2003 10:22:15 My suggestion to you guys is never accept DCC chats on stratics. They can get your IP address via DCC connections, so just a word of warning.
Generally I wouldn't accept DCC chats but I've been contacted a ton lately by people wanting to join sin corp and I thought it was just some IRC newbie trying to message me. I usually get a fair amount of messages from people on IRC.
I'll probably have to contact my ISP monday for a new IP address, since mine is static. The guy is still freaking packeting me, he's got some kind of bot network attacking me at the moment, my firewall is stopping it though for now.
This is pretty lame. I have no idea what his original IP is, though I think it might be a rr.com IP.. ------

Stratics and some other networks mangle your hostname so that people cannot do this sort of stuff. However, a DCC Chat always gives away your IP because you are connecting to another person's machine directly.
(You'd be surprised of the sheer amount of people that don't know about this..)

The IP address that Jim posted is a Road Runner cable modem in the Wilmington, North Carolina area (if it helps at all). Good luck getting any useful response from [email protected] - if you do then you'll be the first person I've ever heard of who got anything other than an automated email.

Pathetic.
Please type in his ip adres in the following whois db:
www.ripe.net
and contact his provider..
These offences are getting you a perma ban with all providers i worked for.
Also report this behaviour to your own isp, incase his ISP will not take actions upon him. If there are enough reports, your isp might block his isp and therefor he cannot attack you directly anymore.

baaghhhh Dos attack. But very carefull could be that the guy attacking you used a open proxy and not his own. So it could happen that a net ignorant that has`t secured his connection was used to route the dos spike through his line.
Why i say this most frigging Dossers never use there own IP`s but find open proxies and use em

It is, but... if you are so concerned about security, even using a personal firewall etc., why did you accept a dcc chat ? I think you know the implications right ? _______________________________________________

Wasn't paying attention. Thought the guy just wanted to talk. Some people I know (well, on EFNet) always use DCC chat. I didn't expect the guy to get my IP and start attacking my ISP connection. =P
Lots of people applying for sinister lately so really, I just thought it was another app. heh. ------

If the person who did this can be traced they should be banned, as well as any further action that his/her ISP might want to take.

you dont need to dcc chat someone on irc to get their ip. A /whois and a resolve is enough to do that.
Quite sad when tossers start resolve to such things just to get ahead in the game. Or whatever.... sad sad sad sad people.. doesnt deserve a internet connection at all..

Stratics is quite good in that it masks your host names so that your ip cant be gotten without a dcc chat.
I however just connect to irc through a bouncer*, which is sadly neccessary in these times as lamas abound :-(

Edited by: agrizla on 30/08/2003 13:47:05 Quakenet goes a tad further - it masks your hostname but only if you're authed*. Being authed means you are traceable - well up to a point anyway.
*As far as I can remember - or possibly not

quakenet do no such thing, someone entire IP is clearly visible when then join if you whois them, on stratics u cnat do this, thus cant start an attack with a dcc
still back to the person who initiated this attack
what action is CCP going to take?

Edited by: agrizla on 30/08/2003 14:48:45 You obviously don't use Quakenet that much
Try /mode set +x or if your IRC client is crap then try /raw mode set +x. Put it in your buffer after authing and before joining a channel.
Now would you care to admit you're totally wrong
And unless CCP run stratics what the hell does this have to do with them? Jim got DoS'd from IRC, not in-game. The two may be related but I fail to see why CCP should be getting involved in this.
