Not to be a thread necromancer, but this character is 1 month, 11 days old and still doesn't have a portrait. Is something broken still?

Is that what happened to my portait?
This is NOT what my portrait looked like when I created it. I spent quite some time making it look perfect, and now it's ruined. Is this going to be fixed? Or should I file a petition or something? Or e-mail Customer Support directly? Call Batman! |

Originally by: t20 To shed some light on this: I recently re-engineered the way characterportraits get rendered, as rendering out all the new characters that came in per day was more the renderer combined with the directory crawler could handle. I'm handeling the rendering process differently now by splitting up the one monster task in 21 different tasks. All characterportraits with ending numbers 00 > 09 will for an example render out on mondays and thursdays.
the beautiful part about this, is that i only have 10 directories to crawl instead of 100, giving me LOTS more time to spend on rendering than on actually crawling directories with +10000 files in them.
what used to take 26 hours (and because of downtime, could only be 23 hours MAX) now takes, through this splitting, only a mere 8 hours, but spread widely over half a weeks time.
So to conclude, I would say that instead of instantanious rendering, your characterportrait should, in the next coming week when we've had a full cycle of the new system, render out in the upcoming 4 days of your character creation.
Not to be offensive or anything, but this was posted a month ago, and it's still not working for char's made before that post.
is there a new ETA on this?

It's not when you created your character that matters but when you posted your first post on this forum. ------------------------------------------- Boycott Starforce! |

bump..
but Im still in my first free month after paying $19.95.
I can see my portrait in my eve folder on my PC. Perhaps... CCP should allow people to upload these portraits ?
Sounds a might bit easier than a system that supposed to but hasent yet done it automatically.

I guess you guys havent been paying attention to all the MAJOR problems the cluster has been having lately. Take note: crashes galore, agent moves, new feature rollouts, improvements being tested on Sisi, work on kali, major bug fixes, exploit petitions...the list goes on. Portraits are kinda at the SEVERELY INSIGNIFICANT portion of the heap. Relax for a bit. It took this character's portrait almost 3 months to show up, but i didnt complain at all simply because there are much more important things for the godly people on the dev team to be worrying about. Prioritize people. There is a method to their madness. _______________________ ...Greetings, Starfighter. Sorry, I disagree with you. There is a quite a big RPG and Politics community on Eve-O forums and when I cannot play for real, I 'play' on the forums. Portraits do matter in some of the sections like the Intergallactic Summit, Corp and Alliance Summit, Corp and Alliance Discussions where a for character portrait oft results in flames like "Post with your main" or "STFU alt...".
Eve Forums are such an important part of the game, that Portraits are important as well. _

Read in context that the "extreme insignificance" i referred to is in reference to the other vastly more important issues of the game, such as playability. I understand RP and have done quite a bit in my gaming career, but making the game playable for the 100k+ people that play the game certainly outweighs the need for people to have portraits on the forums. If this isnt abundantly clear to you, then perhaps you ought to take a class in business, noting that we dont pay for the forums, we pay for the game. If you're selling something, making sure it works is more important than the bells and whistles that go along with it. Compare it to a car. Your portrait is the outward appearance of the car, the game itself is the functionality of the car. Would you prefer a car that runs, but is slightly visually deficient, or a car that looks fabulous, but you cant get it out of the driveway? And which would you pay for if you were buying one? (Dont try and escape this with an "i would buy one that looks good AND runs well" answer, thats not the question.) The correct choice is obvious. Also, in reference to the "post with your main" subject, anyone who cant understand that your lack of a portrait doesnt necessarily make you an alt or a noob shouldnt be talking in the first place. Everyone that RPs knows the difference between a good, well respected RP character and a bad one. Talk to some of the more senior people in the RP community in EVE, talk to some of the better known players and see if they'd ever call you a noob or make comments about you being an alt. I can almost guarantee they would not. In the RP community here, it's widely known that you can form a "family" by making your alt's character surnames the same (i.e. Alessandra Grey and her brother Kyrionn Grey), so not having a portrait could actually play into RP as being a family member, such as a younger sibling who just graduated from the State War Academy or perhaps you're a spy who's true face is unknown until one day you get nabbed by concord and your portrait is now all over the place. RP is about inventiveness as well, use problems to create backstory. _______________________ ...Greetings, Starfighter. Some people are paying real money to have that car painted. Should they sit and spin just because they bought the one that runs?

Edited by: Alessandra Grey on 04/05/2006 09:20:51 To re-reference the game from your example, if you bought a subscription to eve just to RP on the forums, then you're in the wrong game. As stated, game mechanics and issues therein outweigh the need for forum portraits, seeing as portraits work just fine in-game. Basically, if it boils down to the choice between getting it painted and keeping it running, everyone with a brain is going to keep it running before even considering a paint job. So yes, sitting and spinning is the order of the day, unless you decide that you can indeed be inventive with your RP as suggested. _______________________ ...Greetings, Starfighter.
