wow if ppl werent so narrow minded, try to understand him instead of complaining and telling him to wait longer while he said hes been waiting for 2 MONTHS, lol...
now stop the complaining and trolling/ranting, help him out instead!

We can't help him out. And caps have been rude on the internet ( cause they're the equivalent of shooting ) since it's earliest beginning.

well i dont think theres anything wrong with caps, and i dont think he thought of his cap usage as being something like that
and the way to help out is by doing a /sign and hoping a mod will come and do the moderation instead of some kids cursing to hell and back
now CURSING, that a thing that can be complained about! not getting upset after 2 MONTHS long wait... anyone gets upset if they waited for 2 months for something dangit!
so troll the kid that cursed instead and leave this guy be for a mod to help give

I can fix that for you... might end up with a extra family member in a couple of months, but she'd be fixed good.

And I really could care less what you think... cause it's irrelevant. Can I call you a dip****, cause I think that is not insulting but a compliment. No cause general opinion says it's a insult. General opinion thinks all caps is rude on a forum.... presto...
Yes, CCP should have those portraits rendered. No mods can't help with that. Yes CCP will get to it as soon as they get the time to do so. No whining on the forums doesn't help.

There is no answer. He didn't ask a question. And there is nothing anyone here can do to help. This is just a waste of forum space.

It's amazing how flustered some people can get about something as trivial as an avatar. Furthermore, let me lay out a few simple points for our dear hotheadded friend:
1.) You're paying to play a game. The forums are public. If you were paying for the right to access the forums, they wouldnt be apparent to nonsubscribers. True, you do have to have an account to post, but even trial members can post, ergo, your statement about paying to post here is, as you so succinctly put it, irrelevant. 2.) I have been playing Eve for quite some time. This is my secondary account and I post on it to make my character on this account, which has become my primary as of late, apparent to the world. You know, get some exposure. However, to my last post earlier today, I have no avatar. I've had this character active for well over two months, so your complaint about "us" and "we" (speaking of the subscriber base of course) being dissatisfied with CCP's apparent lethargy in fixing the avatar problem is not only misguided, but also incorrect. I think I would speak for the majority of the players represented by the exclamation point, that although an avatar is nice and pretty to look at, it doesnt greatly effect satisfaction with the game or the overall eve experience. 3.)Sir, you either have a problem with reading the appropriate subjects or are too apathetic to look for them. If you had, then you would know that there is an explanation, clearly printed as to why the avatars have not been showing up. Furthermore, not only is there an explanation, but a detailed plan as to how CCP is resolving this issue. No, i will not provide you with a link, as that would defeat the purpose of the first sentence in this, point #3. 4.)I believe you have taken the "identity" bit a bit too far off balance. In game, you are represented by your avatar, clear as day, for anyone to see. Your statistical data can be displayed to any character who knows your name. You can chat (with an avatar if so desired!) to anyone in a myriad of rooms, languages, and systems. I believe those things encompass your game identity. Many MMORPG's charge similar amounts, some more and some less, and also have forums. Some have more features than these, some fewer. But never have I heard anyone decrying the fact that their identity is being unportrayed for a lack of an avatar.
Next time, try having a little more tact. Tone down the aggression and think about what you're saying. An avatar doesnt represent you any more than a photograph does in real life. It is your actions, your words, and the character that comes through in such mediums that reveals your identity. If you looked at me, you'd see a young man who dresses shabbily and doesnt care much for shaving. What you dont see is who I am, the fact that I can articulate myself, the fact that I have two bachelors degrees at age 23. A picture says nothing about who you are. Perhaps you should dwell on that.
Also, keep in mind that many other players have read your squabble and are less than pleased with your attitude. Not to promise that there will be consequences, but for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
In summation, CCP has done an outstanding job with the hardware upgrade. We pay our monthly fees to pay their salaries, to pay for the upgrades, to pay for the ever-expanding universe that is Eve Online. The employees of CCP do not work on this game out of the goodness of their hearts alone. They have needs as well and they still strive to bring us all the best gaming experience possible. If you cant accept that there may be a few flaws from time to time, perhaps you should indeed take your business elsewhere. "To err is human, to forgive is divine" as the poet said.
How to react, whether it be with taste or some excuse for sarcastic wit, is entirely up to you. Just know that your actions here, on these forums which you find so flawed, have revealed more about your character than an avatar ever will.

edit: this is for other threads too and might not seem normal in only this one

/me wanders in and looks around.
Ya know I'm betting I missed something vaguely interesting.
But back on topic. I think we'd all be better off with all the pictures were disabled. If this game is in any way predictive of how people in the future are going to look I'm guessing future folks have standards lower than some of my corp mates.

With the new location CCP moved to, came network issues. Constant disconnects from the net and the glitchiness that goes along with it, prohibited uploads that took longer than 30+ minutes. The characterportraits is one of those uploads where frustration and putting even more pressure on our already swamped network administrators didn't quite work.
The problems were at the root of having our internal network, the TQ cluster and the websites cluster + relating database in three different locations. With the move and the new TQ cluster now, however ... everything is at the same location, leaving us with a direct connection from CCP to everything else. There's no connection loss anymore and I can thus stop torturing our admins.
Rendering of pictures on my side, has never stopped. The machine that renders out the portraits is uploading all the portraits that have been rendered in the last 7 weeks. This process should take about 3 days (seen the huge backlog and the huge amount of new characters).
Note that against popular belief that these portraits are rendered "on-the-fly" or "need a clientpatch" these pictures simply reside on a dedicated webserver (http://img.eve.is) .
Deeply sorry for the inconvenience, all should be well on sunday at the most.

Thank you for the update t20. I have to agree that having your pic on the forums in not the end-all-be-all but it is frustrating. Especially to new players looking to join the community and especially since EVE has had this problem for for so long. Nice to know it'll be all worked out soon.

Edited by: Eternal Fury on 23/02/2006 14:11:37 I can empathise(SP? I can't spell damnit.) with the OP in that the forum avatar may not be a vital thing, it is important to those who post on the forums.
The reason is that most of us associate avatars and sigs with the people behind them.
Myself, I'm new, about 3 weeks, and I'm in the process of getting a sig. The avatar I just want something other then the damned ! mark. I really wish we could use our own avatars that we host. At least we get Sig Images.
I think we should remove the avatars, and just have a large square avatar/sig box on the left that by default is our char's avatar, or is a sig we can host ourselves. - - - - Q: Can I change skills without logging in or Que skills? A: no. to both. End of story.
Q: Wheres the Search button on the forums? A: There isn't one. go here. www.eve-search.com |

My opinion is that the pics are not that important, however my browser is very laggy for the first 30-60 seconds or so when I look in a new thread because it is waiting for a response from all the pictures. It wouldn't be so bad if they ones that don't work yet did the ! sign like usual. Right now it seems some people work, some give the ! sign and others hang for a while then give the red x. (These are the ones that lag the browser)
Anyway, at least it's temporary. I have to congratulate CCP on such a smooth overall transition. Really, top notch! \o/

Thank you t20 for your detailed reply. And thanks to the mods for keeping this thread civil as well.
To the community who supported "my beef", thank you in kind.
To those who found "my beef" frivolous or without merit, I'ld like to say this:
Having an avatar on these forums enhances your presence and helps folks identify you. It bridges the gap between in-game personna to this community and its forums. The forums are - and will always be - an important extension of the community. It gives information, invites folks to corps, keeps the players abreast of current events and is integrated into the web site as part of EVE's service. Without the forums, EVE would feel disconnected and our enjoyment of the game have diminishing returns.
Having an avatar on these boards is like displaying your thumb print. It puts a unique stamp on your personna.
Thanks for yer ear.

Sunday has passed and there's still a lot of players without portraits in the forums including the OP. 4 months after a portrait swap and it still hasn't taken effect in the forums for me. That's way too long imo. Will this ever get taken care of?
It is important to some of us. Could we get an update please?
