To re-reference the game from your example, if you bought a subscription to eve just to RP on the forums, then you're in the wrong game. As stated, game mechanics and issues therein outweigh the need for forum portraits, seeing as portraits work just fine in-game.
Basically, if it boils down to the choice between getting it painted and keeping it running, everyone with a brain is going to keep it running before even considering a paint job. So yes, sitting and spinning is the order of the day, unless you decide that you can indeed be inventive with your RP as suggested.

I'm handeling the rendering process differently now by splitting up the one monster task in 21 different tasks. Sorry, I disagree with you. There is a quite a big RPG and Politics community on Eve-O forums and when I cannot play for real, I 'play' on the forums. Portraits do matter in some of the sections like the Intergallactic Summit, Corp and Alliance Summit, Corp and Alliance Discussions where a for character portrait oft results in flames like "Post with your main" or "STFU alt...".

Eve Forums are such an important part of the game, that Portraits are important as well.

Alessandra, I actually do pay money to post on the Forum. Without an account, no posting after the trial period.

Sadly enough all the 'alt flamers' and 'post with your main posters' are quite often enough to kill a good thread, ending it in a clicky.

Recent server troubles have only hit me once as a minor inconvenience. Whereas every day I am confronted with the 'inability' to post with my Khanid RPG alt because I don't want to see that big fat ! to the left side, it deminishes my immertion. Image is everything.
