Edited by: Consrul on 10/03/2006 04:09:46 a lot of people who played woW..went to WoW due to boredom of DaoC..who went back to DaoC because SB died...who went to Daoc in the first place because AC1 died...who went to Ac1 in the first place because UO went blue and the graphics/concept were new....who went to UO because meridian59 hurt their eyes.....
uh not personal experience or anything ;p
Bottom line is...as a community grows..the larger the varience between player attitudes becomes..and loud minorties are magnified..and um..the larger a community gets..the less cuddly/quaint/familiar it becomes I suppose.

Wow, thats great. Almost every post he made was insulting someone/something. "hick, idiot" god that was a good laugh. What a hypocrite :P

Originally by: Endakar speaking of insults, how many people here know each other? if everyone says yes, then your delusional, or maybe i am.
simple truth is that most people are typing really fast so that they can reply to as many posts as they possibly can, maybe, just maybe cuz they wanna help out other people (its possible). while i can't say i know what their reasons may be for spending hours at a time replying to forums (i don't even know why i do it), i must pat those people on the back who keep the forums alive.
without these people (postatutes, i call them) that dilligently spend hours of each day keeping forums alive, we would not have anyone to poke fun of for bad grammer, but more importantly, i would never get any responses to my questions.
so, poo on you and all those who think that they are king sh!t of the forums just because you read the odd one and find some hole in it to pick away at. get your feckin arses in gear and put in the dedication that the other hard working postatutes do, and maybe the only thing you'll be able to laugh at then is yourself.

Tony Blair has it spot on with this whole respect thing he's banging on about. And for anyone who says otherwise, I say bah. 50 years ago - hell, 20 years ago, you would really not walk down the street and have some random guy you've never met, punch you in the face, and calmly walk off, as happened to my friend the other night when we were out together. He didn't say anything to the guy, he didn't even look at him or anything. Anyway. Yes, the whole rose tinted glasses when looking back on stuff isn't anything new, but you just have to look at the rates of teenage pregnancy, ASBO's, little Britain to see that our world is changing, and most definately not for the better... ------------------------------------------

It really is no use arguing with many people on the internet, you're never going to change their viewpoint (or at least they'll never admit it) so just don't bother. Even if you're blatantly right people will still rubbish what you're saying.
Best thing you can do with idiotic posts is ignore them.

Yes, typo'ing ONE LETTER in a single post out of all the times I've replied with perfect prose definitely lumps me in with the d00dz of the forum. (And it was a typo, though I did have to check myself by looking up the spelling on Merriam-Webster)

Its perfectly acceptable. Would you not say anything to someone who was talking complete jibberish to you? Perhaps a drunk in the street starts spouting off a rant in your general direction but it makes no sense, all you hear is "HHAHDYYF FBBABEHGHGGGGLLL AAAAAAAHFNFKKL!!!!" Like clockwork orange only more F'd up!
We arent talking about perfect prose, we're talking about taking the time to make your post readable to others.

People only get insulted or offended if they feel like it, especially over the internet. Why does it mean anything when Mr.Nobody of the Internet calls you names or is offensive? Just discard any part of a post that is irrelevant to the discussion at hand, and you're done. The moderator team spend plenty of time shooting down excessively rude people and flamers.
I mean, there are only 2 cases in which answering to irrelevant insults and stuff on the forums is reasonable; a) You're losing the discussion and decide to adopt the "BOO HOO HE'S BEING NASTY!" doctrine of forum warfare or b) You're bored.
Also, there's a fine line between being blunt and -a little bit- impolite while making an argument, and being a total flaming jerk for no concievable reason.
So like, grow thicker skin, or in the words of Mr.Timberlake; Cry me a river.

And you can prove this how? Or is this more trite and pointless speculation from yet another arm-chair sociologist? I'll wager the latter.
Honestly, do you think this only happens on gaming forums? The company I work for holds a private forum for share-holders and other "friendly" businesses and I must tell you, you would be apalled at the Quake chatroom-like mentality that is exhibited there. In fact, I know at least 2 posters there are PAID to troll the forums, hired by a comepting business.
This place isn't as bad, not by a long shot.

Originally by: 0bsession Its amazing what people type, but the same jerks would never say it to your face. Why is that?
Because in real life, people make more of an effort to curb behavior that warrants flaming? It's true that some people will start trash talking when you demolish their arguments, but there are just as many people who will try to change the subject, ignore rebuttals, engage in character assasination, or just flat out lie rather than admit they were wrong, which is every bit as bad.
If someone did that in real life, they would catch flak for it, yet here on the internet they can spew their garbage without any real consequenses. Inevitably, the flames follow. |

I just blame the fact we are all human nothing is or ever will be perfect in this world
but still a little respect goes a long way
allthough if somone calls you names and hes not respecting you would it be disrespectfull to tell him not to do so ?
would that not be disrespecting his opinion of you ?
Ah the dilemma of everything in the end it just comes down to getting along with your fellow man and looking past your differances try to get along even how hard it may be

Sometimes I'm not rude but people still feel offended due to that yes.

Sometimes I get rude because of people doing (a) to me. Sometimes I get more involved then I should because of (b). Sometimes it's both.

And oftenly, people just can't handle the fact that some people just have a better argument. So they resort to blowing edginess in the argumentation out of proportion. You know, the good old "you're a griefer so sure you hate me"-argument.
All in all, sometimes people are rude without intention, sometimes they're rude knowingly, and sometimes people just whine about the forums being nasty to them because they can't deal with the arguments.
Who knows which is true in any single case ? So my advice is not taking anything too seriously, and yes i know thats not always easy It probably helps that i like arguing myself.

reason is simple
u don`t have to take any responsability for your actions
say what u say to a group of ppl in a bar and it would prolly cost you a trip to the hospital
alt are just another way to dodge in game responsability and trully hide ur identity, real life and ingame ________________ I don't DO graphics, here's a sig anyway, wubwoo - Cortes lol thanks :-) |

Really this forum isn't so bad. Most of the community is relatively helpful and it is on a way higher plane than the infantile drivel on the WoW forums.
However, there's just something in the water around here that gives the forum that little bit of an edge, fools are not suffered lightly and the game is getting old enough now that many of the vets have seen a lot of the issues that are raised on the forum about 15 times over the last 3 years so can be a little caustic in our responses because of that.
I don't think it's an unreasonable argument to say that the forums reflect the game a little in terms of the harshness of Eve, the more severe death penalty than other games, the allowance of piracy, suicide ganking, scamming, corp theft etc.
There's also a large proportion of the community, especially those who have been around a while (not just the salty old vets like Rod, Viceroy, Avon etc. but people who've really got into Eve over a good few months to a year or more), who are fiercely defensive over the style of game that Eve is and it's relative harshness compared to other MMOG's. Consequentially any post that has the telltale wiff of a whine about game mechanics suggesting a dumbing down or more sheltered approach to gameplay get's pretty much stomped on immediately.
I find some of the 'omg I post on the forums twelvety-hundred and eleventy-one times a day I am uber' brigade to be far more annoying than any aggressively flaming element. In fact what is worse is the group of fanbois that follow the compulsive posters around praising them for spamming the forum with their often useless drivel. Now if that's the most annoying thing about this forum it's got to be a pretty gentle community at heart
