I seem to remember weapons crossing at the point of the target rather than stopping... Was that real, an old bug, or a wacky old dream? |

Confirming guns that "miss" will visually render a "miss" if you are the shooter. If you are being shot at they will not be rendered visually as misses.
This is clearly a first run at this and I'd expect things to be more ironed out once patch progresses and we get closer to winter expansion. |

I am both incredibly happy that all these changes are coming into form and so quickly, the ammont of work being done to eve and what we'll see in this expansion will dwarf everything we've seen before.
At the same time im incredibly sad having realised for how long and how much eve has been suffering from lack of resources untll this whole mass unsubscription because of WiS happend.

+1 for randomized misses on other ships
This will be wonderful for new players not paying attention to what's actually happening on the battle notifications. Newbs in rookie will say "How come I am always missing" rather than "how come I do no damage"
Speed tanking will look so much more intuitive now.
Out of curiosity, what happens graphically when a missed shot intersects with a ship behind. Does the 'miss' graphic somehow always miss those ships too?
Or does it just go through the other ship? |

I doubt it's going to show everyones hit/miss animations, as that would be extremely lag inducing. Probably at some point what will happen is that ships within a certain range will have the hit/miss animation, and out of like say a 40km range of the camra, it will show the standard animation, since you can't tell whether it's hitting or missing at that range. Besides, in small gang fights, your only going to be focusing on either yourself or your target anyways, right? And in larger fleet fights, all the animations shall be turned off.
Unfortunately, this won't make the alliance tournament any more epic. |

It will if they can get the camera focus thing working, then all of the camera men would be able to see the misses.
Alternatively, if they get the members of your own gang thing working then I'm pretty sure they could ninja a way for the game to see the camera men as being part of the contestants gang(s) without it actually showing up on the over view. To kill the enemy and break their toys!

There would be less torpedo explosion spam on the screen for a plus too.

They just run out of fuel I mean if they're warping off grid the missiles aren't going to go in a straight line. they sometimes do this already when they're inbound for a ship - then the ship pops - and the pattern slightly disperses with each missile. in regards to this, they just need an ending animation, loose target barrel rolling off and explode.

awesome awesome awesome feature guys! u guys are finding every little bit of FiS stuff we've craved and seemed to be working wonders on them!
i would however add that including hit or miss animations on all ships on grid will cause a ton of lag, so as others have said on here.. tie it into the camera focus!
you do still need a missile end animation if it doesnt hit its target, a simple small explosion would do (whether the target warps off or is out of range) |

I'm really glad to see this happen. It looks especially awesome for some weapons.
CCP, for some extra polish, you should find a way to stop turret animations tracking inappropriately. For example, if shoot at a ship that's orbiting me at high speed with artillery, the path of the firing animation will track the target in a way that just doesn't make sense. The only weapons that it makes sense for are lasers.
It also looks a bit odd when lasers miss their target, for the entire duration of each laser beam 'burst' to be fixed relative to the target. What would look infinitely more awesome would be for the beams to strafe around the target, as if they were trying to find their bead. For blasters, rails, ACs and artillery, shots should just continue in the direction they were fired in for the duration of the animation.
Of course, I'm being finickity and what you've done is fantastic. But there's always room for improvement...  |

The reason it would cause so much lag is because the game does not "communicate" information about hit/misses between all players on a grid - because it's unneeded. Only when a ship is dead is the status communicated (unless you add a bunch of people to watch list, which is why that feature is limited, because a fleet on watchlist would necessitate so much more info flying to the server then to everyone that lag would increase exponentially)
I do think a way should be sought to have these animations though. The camera focus idea is good... but maybe coupled with some of the code in tidi, so that hit/miss communication data is stopped if large amounts of lag are detected. This way the system could dynamically change itself, and in small gang warfare we could have epic turret misses. Large fleet fights would not have turret misses, but if we're honest, people involved in that would turn turret effects off anyway in an effort to improve client responsiveness! |

Almost certainly not, that'd require a major rewrite of the physics engine.
And it would make Concord so busy correcting accidental spree shooters in hi-sec.

I remember fondly my first encounter with the old proximity-fused, Aera-of-effect torpedoes. Back then the pirates would deliberately inflict the killing blows on your ship with torps, so that the follow-on torp would instantly destroy your pod.  |

Shots missing is a phenomenal addition that I know will get more people interested in eve. The tracking and sig radius calculations are very hard to understand when they are not being displayed. Is that the case now? I.e. will fitting a tracking computer when I really needed three reduce the amount that I miss by? any plans for differentiating between glancing, light, wrecking shots etc? |

IDEA:  client allready have data from server is it missed, perfect shot, light shot, scratch... why not use that... perfect shots shot where it shot now (in middle of the ship) all other have some offset by the data given.. so it hits a little up/down/left/right from center... that way we visually have few groups of offsets and not all shots hit in middle of the ship when it hits...  |

I don't think ccp realise how much of a massive feature this is... after playing other online games (yes I've tried WoW -.-) nothing apart from sounds and text are changed when shots are fired or swords swiped... all the animations are the same etc...
but now with this... it really is an industry first for online games from what I've seen. |

I imagine it's setup the way it is at the moment because they couldn't have it like that idea. First the current system has to gauge the target ("the first shot always hits, sorry") then it can do the calculations. It probably has something to do with the fact that it is basing it off of actual realtime data, instead of numbers they can just put into a system that declare missed, hit, etc.
Just speculation I guess, considering it is real time person vs person and not just person vs npc (Where you can put some parameters on NPC that can say hit or miss chance, etc ...it's called lazy programming/designing).
I've already mentioned in the past that the computers on these ships should be incredibly advanced and able to predict target movement and fire appropriately, the hit or miss factor should really be based on your position in "space" at the time, given that the weapon platforms are mounted in a specific manor that can put them into bad situations (unable to track well or hit the target because you are not properly aligned to the target). |

Pretty epic
I was noticing that there was a minor bug since the last few patches were some grouped lasers don't lock on a new target you are firing at until partway though the cycle.. didn't complain because it looked really nice. I assumed this had happened because you were working on it.
Hopefully hectic gunfire with be cutting through fleets for some spectacular light shows soon! |
