quads/triangles are forms of polygons iirc (though Im a noob in this area mostly apart from the basics)

Polygons are just any shape with sides.
So, yea, a triangle is a polygon. but not all polygons are triangles :|

Which is why they refer to triangles rather than polygons - because detailed models are always composed of triangular polygons.

Did the article give any clue as to when we'll see these graphics upgrades in game??

Mmmm, im not too sure about that, but im no expert. So, oh well.
Mephite: The updates come in Kali, which comes in Q2 (mostlikely after E3 which is in may). Check the features page for other features coming in Kali.

It's a technical thing. When you have good quality models, they tend to be made out of a mesh of polygons to give as smooth a curve as possible (the more polygons, the smoother the curve). It works well with triangles. I'm no expert either, but that's my understanding of it.

The updates are, and i quote "Post-Kali". No other mention is made about a date.
No exact date is given, and it's highly unlikely that it will happen this year, considering Vista won't be out untill next year.

Wtf O_o? I remember reading somewhere official that the graphical upgrades will be in Kali..
Maybe the DX9 improvements are made in kali and the vista related ones will be made later on? It also seems like a waste of time for CCP to make low poly models of the new ships then have to remake them all over again later on
Well i still havent recieved my damn magazine so im pretty clueless, god damn :|

Why would they have to remake the ship models again? The same models can easily be used in DX10, the main diffrence between the two is going to be lighting/effects etc and how they apply to the models, not the models themselves.

you guys should include a big pullout of the eve universe with an issue sometime. then i could laminate it and use a dry erase marker to keep track of where all my alts are. |

Because the prettier ships using DX10 will obviously use more polygons. But then again, they would probably have to remake the models anyway since they need to give the players the option of not using the new graphical upgrades.
EDIT:

There are several print out maps you can find online, very useful for me when im in 0.0.

IIRC it's mostly due to triangles being mathematically guaranteed to be planar -- you can always calculate a plane that goes through any 3 points in space, but for any polygon with more vertices this is no longer true... meaning such polygon can wind up being 'not flat' which can generate inconsistences with shading, bits of geometry disappearing at some angles because it's wrongly determined to be facing the other way... and other such niceties.
(well, that's what it can look like in the 3d modeling programs, anyway ^^;;

So, in other words, "triangles are friendly". :D

You know, it sucks when you really like something so much, that you have to betray your ideals
I wouldn't touch Vista wit a 10 foot pole (DRM crap ), but it looks like Eve will leave me no choice.
I can only hope that the "non Vista" graphics wont be that much worse

If vista has DRM, I'm sticking with Win2k or switching to Linux if it becomes more supported than Win2k. DRM is a big no-no for me.

All polygons can be broken down into triangles - it's the simplest system you can use that enables you to define *any* non-curved polygon.
I'm still waiting for someone to make a game engine that uses NURBS
ps. My issue of EON #3 arrived and it's fantastic! Shiny! A nugget of the purest green! Hopefully I'll actually find time to read it tonight

How thick is the Eon magazine? How many pages? I want to buy it, but I dont know what to expect for that price.

You might want to take a good look at the link to the right and to the top of this page.
It says: NEW! Eon Magazine #003
Maybe, if you are careful, you won't miss the notice that it has xxx pages.

Re: E:ON #3, i didn't see anywhere the results from the design a module competition in issue 2 and whether or not ccp would accept any of the designs? Is TomB/Tux slacking off eh?
Oveur was very ill, so he couldn't go over the entries before we went to print. The results will be in the next issue... hopefully

What about the people who simply dont want to spend 15 bucks just for the pictures of the graphical overhaul? Why arent they included in some dev-blog or something? ______________
