I have a GeForce 4 MX440. I get to the character selection screen, and get a black screen after selecting my character. The cursor changes as if the character selection screen is still there - right-clicking opens a menu saying "Terminate" (over a character) or "Create new" (over a blank slot). It didn't happen immediately after patching - logged on and chatted in station a bit, then launched and got stuck at "entering space" (Gehi system).
Edit: Restart seems to have solved the problem. My oh my it's smooth now! (Is that just lack of players causing reduced lag?)

Im using an AC97 sound card and have noticed the prlblem goes away COMPLETELY if I disable it in windows device manager. Sometime tofay ill try putting a different cardin and seing if that fixes it.

**** i have the same problem.....
and i cannot even send a petition .. but i have found out that if i try to log in with an Alt character the game logs fine i can play the game but i cannot do this with my nain character so i think this has nothing to do with sound or video this is mainly a database access ..
i got this problem as when i jumped then the connecting to the local freq channel then i press escape then the game gives me a black screen....

i got somthing that might help if your runing the game on a Xp machine.
set the game to run as windows 98. you can do that by right clicking the shortcut that should remove all the problems

If you disable "full acceleration" of your sound device, it should let you into Character Selection, however if you're like me, this is unacceptable. I should not have to lower my experience just to play. However the odd thing of it is for me, sometimes "emulation" acceleration works, the next time I logon I'll get the black screen again. Returning the sound acceleration slider back to full allows me back into Char Select. Driving me nuts!
Easiest way to do this in any version of windows:
Start -> Run -> dxdiag
Click Sound tab, move slider all the way to the left for emulation, right for full acceleration.

Right click on the EVE desktop icon, click on Properties, then click on the "compatibility" tab.

Oh Boy, I thought my nice new FX5900 Ultra would make Eve a dream to play. But it is a nightmare.
I have tried all driver combinations, and all the fixes people were kind enough to post here.
I have been able to get on using the wrong password fix, but only after a clean install and patch. and then only at the basic resolution. If I make any changes at all Eve crashes, and I cant log in, untill I reinstall.
Very frustrating. I hope CCP are working on this, as I have wasted over a week, reinstalling this dam game on my PC.
