Yeah, after the patch, I try to log in and successfully connect but never make it to character select. Get a black screen and it just sits there. I have to end task to get out. Any ideas?
I cleared the cache including prefs.ini

I have the same problem only it gets black before I get to chose character but after login sequence

I believe you have restated my exact problem. Let me ask you did you patch from the web? Or did you download the patch through the client?

I downloaded it from the web during the downtime. Now I try reinstalling. Coming back with the results if it works

it did it to me too.
here's what I did (no idea if this fixed it, or it if was just random but I'm in now.
on the black screen I could still see the mouse cursor change when I hovered where the char faces should be.
I selected a char and let it run for a while (almost 2 min) then it faded in my ship floaring in space. none of the other stuff was visable, no controls, or other windows.... I pressed esc just a blank screen, and I could press esc again to get back into the game....
alt tab out and right click the task on the base bar, and pick close. it pops back up and seems to wait a few seconds, then it closed.
then I just loaded the game again, and all seemes fine after that.
I have no idea if this will fix anything, it's just exactly what I did and in what order when mine started working. Give it a try, it just might solve your bug. But don't shoot me if this dosn't help :)

Oops now i see in your first post it did.... Anyways my mouse cursor isnt switching. Im 85% done downloading the cd to 1066 patch now after 3 minutes. God bless broadband. Ill let you know if my reinstal and repatch fromthe client does the trick

Nvidia GFx5900 (downloading latest drivers now to be sure)
I dont remember motherborad particulars and i dont think it matters but its at most 2 months old.
Some generic sound card built into the Mboard
Thats about it.
I lost my manual can some1 ***** theirs open and look for hte support phonen umber for me?

Support has no clue what is going on. Get this, they told me to wait 14 hours until the patch file is posted on the web and try downloading the patch and applying it manually.
I mean come on! Is that a canned answer or what? The patch file was posted on the web before the server wsa even up. What a joke.

Add yet another to the growing list..
If it's any help, I *was* able to get in after deleting my cache, then editing my prefs.ini file. Unfortunatately, about 5 mins into playing, I lost my Chat. I thought it may be a result of my switching to windowed mode, and relogged. Now, I'm back to the black screen and the aforementioned changes aren't working this time.
I also downloaded the patch locally and installed. Also, when I lost the chat window, I attempted to open the channels folder and open the help chat, but the channels folder was empty when I did, and unfortunately my attempts at creating a help channel didn't work.
Well, I guess it's back to <insert other game here> until a resolution is found.

Hi guys! I got mine fixed: Here is what I did perhaps it will work for you.
I used my old copy of eve before the reinstal. My old copy had been manually patched on the web. I loaded it, logged in, and then got a blackscren before char select. I then let it sit there and went to read a book.
At some point it got a CTD on its own. I tried to login after that and all is well. I can even relog now with no problem. goood luck to you

Actually I managed to get too... though with heavy lag. I tried to log on, clicked on the black screen like crazy, alt-tab, ctrl-alt-del a couple of times. Until it crashed and then I could log on. 
But I still think it's bad that it happened... I hope they come out with a fix.
PS I also use a geforcefx 5600 ultra... Maybe thats something? DS

This is totally wack, I can't access my characters and nothing seems to be working. I have a gfx5900 ultra and it was working BEFORE this damn patch.

I also see that they have stated 1216 as the newest build, but every patch is only 1215... just a thought. Though it seems that most of the people having trouble are using GF FX 5600. Or?
By the way, mines broken again... atleast I got to fix some things before crash.

I think it's because all our gfx cards are too new for eve, and they aren't correctly supported yet.
I have a FX 5900 Ultra, and the FX 5600 Ultra is actually newer than the 5900.
I had the problem before the patch, a workaround i used was to change some of the advanced settings, like putting AA on x2 or x4, sometimes it worked, but now it's completely unresponsive.

But mine worked perfectly fine before the patch. I also got to log on for a while. Seems very strange indeed. They shouldnt introduce new problems to new cards that has worked before... Just frustrating

reinstalled everywhich way tried latest drivers and also 43.45 drivers and reinstalled a lot.
tech support say re install and use a download manager.
hope they come up with a serious reply soon.
probably a robot response.
anyone know how to use the server log program so i have a serious error report to attach to my next help request?

The solution is actually just weird. I found that when I type the wrong password first, then I'll get through on the second try. Don't know why, but it's obviously some sort of bug in the authorization system...
Hope this helps a few disgruntled souls out there... ;)

I used to get this problem once in a while. Now it's every time since the new patch though. Running a geforce fx 5600 with lastest nvidia patch.

After doing some digging this does not seem to be a graphics card problem. It seems to a patch program problem.
The patch programs downloaded either automatically in game or through the web site are identical. Yet if installed from outside the game it messes up. Some of the EVE files get corrupted during the patch process. You can see this by compairing two different EVE directories after installing the patch using the two methods.
It seems CCP needs to get itself a new patch program. |

Trust me on this, the simplest fix for this exact problem is to try to log on with the wrong password first... When you try again with the correct pw, it runs smoothly...

FX 5600 256MB
2nd machine Gforce2 MX 400 -- No problems
Both machines downloaded from the web!
(and the funny thing is I just traded my All-in Wonder 8500 for the FX 5600 because of Performance in Eve *sigh*)

Unfortunately this fix DID NOT work for me I just bought a new vid card to make this game work (geForce4 440), so this is not a 5900 problem, and it goes to the log-in and then the dreaded black screen...
Any ideas at all?
I did try the wrong password thing, just installed the latest drivers...
Does anybody but players look at this board?

i also have the 5600 fx and have had the problem since the last patch, but rebooting and logging in again seemed to work. Now the prob is much worse, i get blank screen 90% of the time. Will try the wrong login approach.

I also have the GeForceFX 5600 card and got the black screen after the patch. I need to restart my computer and then it works fine again to get in the game. Is there a process that doesn¦t go down or some files that need¦s to be cleard to get in perhaps.

Using bad password and then good password works for me sometimes . But common fix this.

I've got a 5600 FX ultra too, was off tfor the last day, thanks to the person who said disable the sound card, now things are working (just no sound, just the thing for an audigy2 platinum)
NB the bad password / good password didn't do anything

I got 2 computers, and I have the same problem on the computer with FX5600, my other computer has a G-Force 256 MX. So i think its a video card problem. I ran the log server and it show there was a error in loading an index buffer?
So I copyed the installation from the GeForce 256 mx computer. and now it works... for now. |

I actually manage to play now. The fix: Write the wrong passward. Write the right password.. voila. I got in.  Don't ask me why but it worked. And tried it several times.

I was playing fine with my GF FX 5900 Ultra until yesterday's patch. Now I get the black screen after I click on the login. How annoying.
Judging from the comments here, this has been an ongoing problem. This deserves a response from CCP immediately.

I have a GeForce 4 MX440. I get to the character selection screen, and get a black screen after selecting my character. The cursor changes as if the character selection screen is still there - right-clicking opens a menu saying "Terminate" (over a character) or "Create new" (over a blank slot). It didn't happen immediately after patching - logged on and chatted in station a bit, then launched and got stuck at "entering space" (Gehi system).
Edit: Restart seems to have solved the problem. My oh my it's smooth now! (Is that just lack of players causing reduced lag?)

Im using an AC97 sound card and have noticed the prlblem goes away COMPLETELY if I disable it in windows device manager. Sometime tofay ill try putting a different cardin and seing if that fixes it.

and i cannot even send a petition .. but i have found out that if i try to log in with an Alt character the game logs fine i can play the game but i cannot do this with my nain character so i think this has nothing to do with sound or video this is mainly a database access ..
i got this problem as when i jumped then the connecting to the local freq channel then i press escape then the game gives me a black screen....

i got somthing that might help if your runing the game on a Xp machine.
set the game to run as windows 98. you can do that by right clicking the shortcut that should remove all the problems

If you disable "full acceleration" of your sound device, it should let you into Character Selection, however if you're like me, this is unacceptable. I should not have to lower my experience just to play. However the odd thing of it is for me, sometimes "emulation" acceleration works, the next time I logon I'll get the black screen again. Returning the sound acceleration slider back to full allows me back into Char Select. Driving me nuts!
Easiest way to do this in any version of windows:
Start -> Run -> dxdiag
Click Sound tab, move slider all the way to the left for emulation, right for full acceleration.

Oh Boy, I thought my nice new FX5900 Ultra would make Eve a dream to play. But it is a nightmare.
I have tried all driver combinations, and all the fixes people were kind enough to post here.
I have been able to get on using the wrong password fix, but only after a clean install and patch. and then only at the basic resolution. If I make any changes at all Eve crashes, and I cant log in, untill I reinstall.
Very frustrating. I hope CCP are working on this, as I have wasted over a week, reinstalling this dam game on my PC.
