I'm honestly confused. Stuff like this happens every day. If we had posts about every killed by a frig/destroyer whatever gang, we'd see the board expand 5x. So why is this news? I understand that killing a Megathron with n00bs is exciting, but normally you don't go posting it on General forums.

Its because Rells runs a pvp school for new people / people who want to learn.
It's important because it shows that with some balls, co-ordination and a decent setup you can achieve big things. This is more relevant and inpiring to many than news of an alliance killing 5 dreads.

I didn't know that that was news to anyone. I mean. Honestly, sure he's teaching new guys to PVP. But most/any PVP corp would do that for free if you sign up for a trial membership whatever. And it's not like it's news that 8-Whatever frigs/destroyers can take down BSes. It's common knowledge to ANY PVPer who knows half of what's what, and to most carebears. But, TBH, I think most of the posts he makes are just adverts for his school so he can make ISK, and inflate his ego. Could I be wrong? Sure. But you don't see most/any people making posts about how they took down a BS with whatever ships. 14 Dessies and a Cruiser killed a Mega? Yay...Not to mention, that it could probably easily be done with no losses.
Meh. My opinion, though, of course.

It doesn't take balls to attack someone 14v1. Usually, it barely takes co-ordination. Say 'Mega is primary' and the mega will die.

1) Deja Thoris knows a HELL of a lot more about PvP than you do.
2) If you think you can go with an uncoordinated, unskilled fleet of 14 light ships and just take out a battleship, you are a moron.
3) You and your buddy quoted above are either blind or didnt watch closely. There were 3 other battleships, 1 cruiser and a couple of small ships that warped in maybe 15 seconds after the fight started.
4) The players in the gang stayed cool under fire in an intense sitation when VASTLY outnumbered and outgunned, and made a kill in a situation when half the people in the game that think they are hot stuff would have failed to engage. Most people in the game would have safe spotted and logged when they had destroyers and 5 BS, a HAC and several other ships were in local.

Do you know how few "pvp" corps there are out there? Despite everybody thinking they are a "pvp" corp, I think there are very few. What you would learn from a lot of them is quesionable at best.
Is Rells engaging in a bit of shameless self promotion? No doubt. Anything that gets a few players into 0.0 with a positive attitude for a bit of fun is a good thing in my book. Imagine the worlds it opens up when his students see that not everybody in 0.0 is a fifteen foot tall giant farting citadel torps and burping lasers.
Yes, to a group of seasoned pvp'rs killing a bs in small ships is no big deal and not news-worthy. To guys who are pretty much pvp virgins, David killed Goliath. Theres a lot of other pvp virgins out there and they could have been the ones whose destroyers got the final blow on that killmail

Gilty as charged. But this post wasnt really written for any of the people that posted on it. You and I both knew that of course.
One of our students in a Basic class got the final on a dominix and i dont think he will ever delete that killmail. We dont do magic, we just show newer players that they ARE relevant and that they CAN do something about those shooting at them. We show them that they dont have to be sheep anymore.

I can see that. I dunno, though. First off, the self-promotion thing gets to me on some level, because it jsut seems like that's the focus of this topic, to me. *Shrug* The whole 0.0 PVP thing, yeah, it can seem scary, but it's not like after taking this class, they'll be OK in 0.0. Or good at PVP. Because, to be honest, without Rells leading most of these guys, they'll be just as scared, and die just as quick. IMO, anyway. But, again, my opinion.

This is an initiative by Rells that has had my support from the beginning. Good on him for taking rookies under his wing and teaching them how to fight and survive. I have my own disagreements with certain combat doctrines that Rells pushes (just based on stuff I've read in the Crime and Punishment forum) but I maintain that what he does with his lessons is a good thing for the rookie pilot community.
Yeah, this particular engagement had a predictable outcome; it wasn't a quality kill by any means. But it's good advertising, and it shows a bit of initiative and what rookie pilots can expect to experience from the course.

Edited by: Rellik B00n on 02/05/2006 14:35:29 . good work, i think for a great many people the course is a good idea.
I do however think from my own recent pvping experiences and from what i read on these forums and elsewhere that the bottom line is actually fairly simple.
you take 10 ships, your enemy takes 1. Apart from the uber rare occasions when the 1 has the exact fitting required the 10 will win. Always.
So if anyone wants to pay me 10m ISK a time for this, here is the Rellik PVP university course in its entirety:
[1] Take lots more ships than them.
You can pay me in game

1) Yeah, he probably is. 2) I've done it with less than 14 before, and I'm not extremely talented. If your players are too retarded to orbit and press F1-F8, then yes I imagine it might take more. However, if they can't do that, chances are they can't find the power button on their PC. 3) According to your post, the cruiser was on the destroyers' side, not the battleships. You also said nothing about any small ships that I can see. You can do a lot in 15 seconds when you have 14 ships on your side. With destroyers, most battleships wouldn't be able to hit them anyway (unless they were set up for it. I don't know if they were). 4) Vastly outnumbered? You seem to be adding ships each paragraph/

But of course let them know that it won't always roll out like that, have to be smart about it ^^. It's entirely possible that 1 ship could destroy all of that.

They were fitted according to the Hydra Principle.

Under the same conditions in the same situation, the outcome would always be the same. Smart bombs wouldnt have helped him as there were only 2 pilots using blasters and thus close enough to get popped.

While he was AFK Im sure. It woould take an AFK puilot or one with a serious brain injury if he couldnt kill a dessy with a harpy 1 on 1.

Would be nice to see a cruiser class, or one on fleet command; I have some experience with PvP, but not as much as I'd like. Cruisers are where things start to get really interesting, with lots of variety in setups, and fleet command makes the more of a difference in battle than anything except maybe ship setups. -- CAPT Svetlana Scarlet Chief of Diplomatic Staff Captain, CNS Shield of Larani Caldari Independent Navy Reserve |
