Being as EVE online is just a game, I don't think (after a period of adjustment) that most of the so-called in game griefers would be that much different. What would change are the so-called carebears who threaten RL harm when they lose at EVE. That type of response would probably diminish due to the accountability issues. |

How much of a difference would it make in the Eve universe knowing (PlayerX) is really John Doe? How many players would continue to actually play? Would it mean the death of Eve as we know it or merely an evolution to a nicer universe?

I think we'd still understand that, at its core, EVE is only a game. Killing and stealing is the name of the game in this vicious universe. I've openly talked with my real-life friends about the mean things I pulled in EVE last night, because we can separate fact from fiction. Just because someone will kill you and gloat about it in EVE doesn't mean they really hate you; they're just enjoying the game. Look at my sig, my sig is amazing |

Doesn't much matter does it?
All of Eve knows that the NSA knows who they are, and still it rolls on. I'm not gonna buy beer for a GF, and i'm not gonna board a plane to kick a neckbearfds ass over a gank.
Anonymity is good in doses, and I highly doubt anything would change in Eve if google purchased it and made everyone sign up for Google+ using your real name to play.

In sports you get taught to leave it all on the field/court/whatever. No matter what happens, you just let it go, shake hands and be on your way. This actually leads to some pretty amazing rivalries, because you can talk **** and try to basically kill each other on the field, but you're both athletes and you know nothing is going to come of it in real life.
Of course, athletes aren't the kind of people who go out and shoot up schools. Nerds take meaningless stuff way too seriously. If I went and suicide ganked a goon or got suicide ganked, I could probably meet them the next day and we'd both laugh about it. If I suicide ganked random hisec pubbie #442733, they might actually try to escalate it into real life violence.
BAsically, it shouldn't change anything, but because there are some messed up people in Eve, innocent people might get hurt over a video game.

Let's say there's a pure carebear player called i<3AFK piloted by John Doe afk mining. He gets suicide ganked by a certain Yang Aurilen whose is piloted by Johnny Deer. Queue the racial slurs and RL death threats via EVEMail to said suicide ganker by the now angry i<3AFK. Now since both parties know each others identity the suicide ganker posts all EVEMail sent to him by the still fuming carebear known as John Doe on his facebook and all his contacts.
What do you think a certain John Doe will say once his friends, family and coworkers find out he launched a barrage of racial slurs and RL threat to a player over a game? What will happen if Mr. Johnny Deer reported John Doe to the police for death threats against him over a bunch of exploded space pixels? Will John Doe report Mr. Johnny Deer to the police over his exploded space pixels?
If John Doe decided to drive over Johnny Deer's house and shoot him in the kneecap because John Deer blew up space ship who's in the wrong? |

EVE would cease to exist as we know it, and it wouldn't be any "nicer". In fact, like any other recreational group with a social hierarchy, things would change rather severely.
Effectively, it would cease to be a game and just be "Facebook in Space"... and I don't make that reference accidently, either.
... and I was just saying the other day, "Damn, I miss Soundwave"....

It seems a lot of you are talking about extremes, such as people showing up at your door, trying to murder you, etc. The reality is that it is very easy to harrass people in real life over long distances, which is what would most likely happen if your real name was known to people that you've killed or scammed in-game.
How much effort do you think it takes to ring up every fast food place local to you and have them deliver huge amounts of food to your house, and do it over and over so that no fast food place will ever deliver to you again? How much effort to call up your school/workplace/parents and inform them of your "peculiar sexual preferences"? How about ringing the police and informing them of the stash of illegal drugs you're hiding in your house?
This is the likely outcome of anyone mad enough. who knows who you are, and is seeking revenge against you. |

Would it mean the death of Eve as we know it or merely an evolution to a nicer universe? Fun fact, just as many people that are nice IRL but horrible online, are horrible IRL and nice online. Because being nice, or being hateful, both create societal pressures on an individual that they want to ESCAPE, this is what video games were made for. You could have an American Neo-**** playing EVE in a corp full of minorities and they'd never know it, heck, he might even play minmatar, because the whole point of him being in the game is to ESCAPE the stresses of what he feels in real life, including racist tendencies. Similar to that kid whos always nice and helpful IRL, but because he/she isnt very assertive, and is ignored, becoems frustrated on the inside, and takes it out on individuals in the game by harassing, bullying, etc.
All playing EVE would do is force people to act by the same social standards and stereotrypes they reinforce in their real life, again, just look at facebook for 5 seconds. |

And by the time they did enough of that to become a serious problem, It becomes SERIOUSLY illegal, like, several eyars jail time with threat of an additional 10 years for repeat offence in the US (and thats one of the more lenient). Fact is, there is very little one can actually "get away with" in real life as long as the one being targeted doesnt go full idiot about it.
though my favorite are those who say theyll show up to my house and beat me up, who i invite to try, as in my state your allowed to shoot someone on your property if you believe them to be a threat (like seriously, do people even think 2 seconds before they satrt spouting hate-rage at people online?)

I want to point out that the "evil pirates" usually aren't the ones throwing around racial slurs and threatening real life violence over losing in a video game. If your name was connected to your in-game actions, who do you really think most people are going to look down on? Who do you think is going to get in trouble with the law, the pirate or the person who threatened to come to the pirate's house and mutilate him? Things are only impossible until they are not. |

@OP
I think there would be more old-fashioned intrigue instead of alt spys and stuff. That's pure speculation, though, since I don't have any experience with that side of the game yet. Rumours about people's RL would be spread.
More people would try to "shame" or verbally hurt or threaten people ingame with real life stuff: "Hey all, look, that picture I found. That guy's so ugly and fat." or "I'll make sure you'll never find a job in IT anymore" or whatever.
More people would try to shame and spread lies about players IRL. "That sociopath ganked me, then scammed me, then laughed at me. Beware of this despicable human being" and "After that guy lost in a game he posted this: [threats, insults etc.].. that's the kind of guy he is." I suspect that kind of stuff would go down in intensity quickly, though, once real life friends and family and co-workers ask those people why they're so worked up about a game and help put things into perspective.
Those few people who really enjoy hurting someone IRL through the game would be delighted as the "tears" would feel even more real.
Some people would leave the game because they're not comfortable to be so "public", unrelated to their ingame activities.
And probably a lot more stuff. I'm only guessing, of course. |

Honestly? Not so different. The idea of anonymity isn't really something feasible nowadays. CCP can only move its hand and probably my location, my average play-time, who has accessed to my API and from where (maybe) and also a lot of other information that I can't think of at the moment.
The truth is that nobody is anonymous as long they hold some kind of identity in real life, but someone without an identity belongs to no nation or state, and even at that point everyone in this thread has a physical form; as long you are human with skin, flesh and bones you can be found.
However the ability of being found doesn't mean that someone out there is looking for you, nor a government, nor a corporation. Someone, somewhere perhaps has sold the information regarding your latest searches, or maybe information regarding your last purchases, preferences and small things like favorite movies and food.
The world we live in is a world that strives in information-- what that information is used for will be everyone's doubt until it is brought up for a purpose, and slowly over the years everyone has done something a little, or wholly shameful that they simply want to forget and move on.
In 2013 the internet as we know almost died thanks to the carelessness of the media, secret agencies (from all over the globe) and misunderstanding from the people as to what this huge issue entails. |
