With all the crazy laws being passed in various countries. What would the ramifications be if noone's real identity could remain hidden? Kinda like China already, but to a greater extent.
Would most Eve players remain sadistic psychos or would their attitudes and playstyles change? Would you still gank and pod that helpless miner knowing he could very well track you down in real life?
How much of a difference would it make in the Eve universe knowing (PlayerX) is really John Doe? How many players would continue to actually play? Would it mean the death of Eve as we know it or merely an evolution to a nicer universe? |

No, it's legitimate.
I unsubbed from Facebook about 3 years ago. The experience was horrific.
And the idiocy was caused by people I had known since the age of 13. My very high school graduating class folks, if you can believe that.
They were using FB to organize our reunion (1983), and about half of them (this is Texas) got involved in the stupid Tea Party Nonsense.
My good lord....the hatred and scumbaggery these people revealed. And they would just not stop with the incessant propaganda.
People will always distort Internet groups of any kind towards their own agenda.
I can never ever be in a room with those people again.

Well now, let's see. What this question clearly pre-supposes are consequences for doing something online that someone doesn't like.
Now let's assume that Player A - the non-sociopath has said or done something that makes he and Player B - the sociopath in antagonism.
Which player is at greater risk of something really unpleasant happening to him in real life, do you think? The normal person or the dead-eyed sadistic nutbar?
Oh I know, let's obviate this unpleasant train of thought by maybe not thoughtlessly advocating vigiliante justice, maybe?

You pose an interesting idea, I guess. Once, during a basketball game, I threw an elbow on a guy that broke his glasses in two across his face. Sure, I was charged with a foul, then a technical foul. The guy was more shocked than mad. In fact, my mom was the maddest person in the crowd over that. She started yelling at me and the entire gym fell silent. Spooky. But, only one of many such incidents in a long set of years playing various sports. Why mention it?
Well, I figure the guy probably had every right to drive over to my house call me out on the front porch and punch me in the nose. Had he done that, or tried, I wouldn't have been shocked. Even though we lived just a few miles apart, the thought never entered the guy's mind. Never entered mine either. I didn't sit in the house tremblin' that this power forward was comin' for me. I think it'd be stupid to think so. What was done on the court, stayed on the court...or field...diamond...
Maybe if I'd taken a pistol out there and shot him. Or, had some of my friends mug him on the way to the locker room at half time, that'd be a different story. Thing was, nobody ever thought like that, either. The game is the game. Off the field is off the field. The two don't mix. I guess you're askin' if that's true for EVE. It would be for me. Other players? Probably not. See, there's not a lot of sportsmanship in EVE. There's not a lot of discipline, and really (face it), EVE has become something any fool can do. Ask them. They're all over the place now.
I look at it like, in this world of random violence and crime, my home security has to be at a certain level not to be a fool myself. If anyone comes to my door uninvited, that's what they'd be looking at. In all likelihood, it's not something a rational person would want to be looking at. If anyone's that dumb...well, there you go. I'd recommend EVE players follow a general rule of thumb in life itself. Don't go knockin' on a door if you don't know what's behind it. Some surprises are not fun. Dont fight it; Rejoin your Amarrian patriarchs; You know you want to. |

His question is laden with what is called an implicit assumption.
Like when someone - perhaps full of good intentions - says "Well what if we tried to reduce the Federal deficit by eliminating welfare spending" when every dollar the US spends on welfare generates 2.4 dollars in GNP, and saves a large but unknown amount of spending on defending against the starving ramaging hordes who would simply take the food and goods they need, because no one is willing to starve to improve interest rates.. The intention is good, the assumption is understandable on a superficial level, but a moment's thought reveals the huge error.
I hope you see the analogy.

I know where your coming from lol. I too live in one of those states where "gun control" means "hold it with 2 hands, you're more accurate that way" :) .
And sure, we know there are people online who can't separate in game from out. We see it every day on these forums.
But i think some people have it backwards. The game might be nicer, but it wouldn't be because the predators went way, it would be because the prey wouldn't come at all. IMO it's really the so called "nice guy" gamers that need and use the anonymity of the internet, the so called sociopaths don't give a flying flip if someone knows who they are or not.
IMO it's why you don't see very many self identified high sec player or carebears running for the CSM (for example) while the same CSM is stocked with "griefiers" and members of the legendary and all powerful Null Sec Cartels (lol) who give their real names out as a condition of running.
So yea, EVE would be nicer is people had to use their real identities because the only people left would be the kinds who wouldn't be some incredibly oversensitive to imaginary losses that 'griefing' would be pointless.

Being as EVE online is just a game, I don't think (after a period of adjustment) that most of the so-called in game griefers would be that much different. What would change are the so-called carebears who threaten RL harm when they lose at EVE. That type of response would probably diminish due to the accountability issues. |

How much of a difference would it make in the Eve universe knowing (PlayerX) is really John Doe? How many players would continue to actually play? Would it mean the death of Eve as we know it or merely an evolution to a nicer universe?

I think we'd still understand that, at its core, EVE is only a game. Killing and stealing is the name of the game in this vicious universe. I've openly talked with my real-life friends about the mean things I pulled in EVE last night, because we can separate fact from fiction. Just because someone will kill you and gloat about it in EVE doesn't mean they really hate you; they're just enjoying the game. Look at my sig, my sig is amazing |

Doesn't much matter does it?
All of Eve knows that the NSA knows who they are, and still it rolls on. I'm not gonna buy beer for a GF, and i'm not gonna board a plane to kick a neckbearfds ass over a gank.
Anonymity is good in doses, and I highly doubt anything would change in Eve if google purchased it and made everyone sign up for Google+ using your real name to play.

In sports you get taught to leave it all on the field/court/whatever. No matter what happens, you just let it go, shake hands and be on your way. This actually leads to some pretty amazing rivalries, because you can talk **** and try to basically kill each other on the field, but you're both athletes and you know nothing is going to come of it in real life.
Of course, athletes aren't the kind of people who go out and shoot up schools. Nerds take meaningless stuff way too seriously. If I went and suicide ganked a goon or got suicide ganked, I could probably meet them the next day and we'd both laugh about it. If I suicide ganked random hisec pubbie #442733, they might actually try to escalate it into real life violence.
BAsically, it shouldn't change anything, but because there are some messed up people in Eve, innocent people might get hurt over a video game.

Let's say there's a pure carebear player called i<3AFK piloted by John Doe afk mining. He gets suicide ganked by a certain Yang Aurilen whose is piloted by Johnny Deer. Queue the racial slurs and RL death threats via EVEMail to said suicide ganker by the now angry i<3AFK. Now since both parties know each others identity the suicide ganker posts all EVEMail sent to him by the still fuming carebear known as John Doe on his facebook and all his contacts.
What do you think a certain John Doe will say once his friends, family and coworkers find out he launched a barrage of racial slurs and RL threat to a player over a game? What will happen if Mr. Johnny Deer reported John Doe to the police for death threats against him over a bunch of exploded space pixels? Will John Doe report Mr. Johnny Deer to the police over his exploded space pixels?
If John Doe decided to drive over Johnny Deer's house and shoot him in the kneecap because John Deer blew up space ship who's in the wrong? |

EVE would cease to exist as we know it, and it wouldn't be any "nicer". In fact, like any other recreational group with a social hierarchy, things would change rather severely.
Effectively, it would cease to be a game and just be "Facebook in Space"... and I don't make that reference accidently, either.

It seems a lot of you are talking about extremes, such as people showing up at your door, trying to murder you, etc. The reality is that it is very easy to harrass people in real life over long distances, which is what would most likely happen if your real name was known to people that you've killed or scammed in-game.
How much effort do you think it takes to ring up every fast food place local to you and have them deliver huge amounts of food to your house, and do it over and over so that no fast food place will ever deliver to you again? How much effort to call up your school/workplace/parents and inform them of your "peculiar sexual preferences"? How about ringing the police and informing them of the stash of illegal drugs you're hiding in your house?
This is the likely outcome of anyone mad enough. who knows who you are, and is seeking revenge against you. |

How much of a difference would it make in the Eve universe knowing (PlayerX) is really John Doe? How many players would continue to actually play? Would it mean the death of Eve as we know it or merely an evolution to a nicer universe? Fun fact, just as many people that are nice IRL but horrible online, are horrible IRL and nice online. Because being nice, or being hateful, both create societal pressures on an individual that they want to ESCAPE, this is what video games were made for. You could have an American Neo-**** playing EVE in a corp full of minorities and they'd never know it, heck, he might even play minmatar, because the whole point of him being in the game is to ESCAPE the stresses of what he feels in real life, including racist tendencies. Similar to that kid whos always nice and helpful IRL, but because he/she isnt very assertive, and is ignored, becoems frustrated on the inside, and takes it out on individuals in the game by harassing, bullying, etc.
All playing EVE would do is force people to act by the same social standards and stereotrypes they reinforce in their real life, again, just look at facebook for 5 seconds. |

And by the time they did enough of that to become a serious problem, It becomes SERIOUSLY illegal, like, several eyars jail time with threat of an additional 10 years for repeat offence in the US (and thats one of the more lenient). Fact is, there is very little one can actually "get away with" in real life as long as the one being targeted doesnt go full idiot about it.
though my favorite are those who say theyll show up to my house and beat me up, who i invite to try, as in my state your allowed to shoot someone on your property if you believe them to be a threat (like seriously, do people even think 2 seconds before they satrt spouting hate-rage at people online?)

I want to point out that the "evil pirates" usually aren't the ones throwing around racial slurs and threatening real life violence over losing in a video game. If your name was connected to your in-game actions, who do you really think most people are going to look down on? Who do you think is going to get in trouble with the law, the pirate or the person who threatened to come to the pirate's house and mutilate him? Things are only impossible until they are not. |

@OP
I think there would be more old-fashioned intrigue instead of alt spys and stuff. That's pure speculation, though, since I don't have any experience with that side of the game yet. Rumours about people's RL would be spread.
More people would try to "shame" or verbally hurt or threaten people ingame with real life stuff: "Hey all, look, that picture I found. That guy's so ugly and fat." or "I'll make sure you'll never find a job in IT anymore" or whatever.
More people would try to shame and spread lies about players IRL. "That sociopath ganked me, then scammed me, then laughed at me. Beware of this despicable human being" and "After that guy lost in a game he posted this: [threats, insults etc.].. that's the kind of guy he is." I suspect that kind of stuff would go down in intensity quickly, though, once real life friends and family and co-workers ask those people why they're so worked up about a game and help put things into perspective.
Those few people who really enjoy hurting someone IRL through the game would be delighted as the "tears" would feel even more real.
Some people would leave the game because they're not comfortable to be so "public", unrelated to their ingame activities.
And probably a lot more stuff. I'm only guessing, of course. |

Honestly? Not so different. The idea of anonymity isn't really something feasible nowadays. CCP can only move its hand and probably my location, my average play-time, who has accessed to my API and from where (maybe) and also a lot of other information that I can't think of at the moment.
The truth is that nobody is anonymous as long they hold some kind of identity in real life, but someone without an identity belongs to no nation or state, and even at that point everyone in this thread has a physical form; as long you are human with skin, flesh and bones you can be found.
However the ability of being found doesn't mean that someone out there is looking for you, nor a government, nor a corporation. Someone, somewhere perhaps has sold the information regarding your latest searches, or maybe information regarding your last purchases, preferences and small things like favorite movies and food.
The world we live in is a world that strives in information-- what that information is used for will be everyone's doubt until it is brought up for a purpose, and slowly over the years everyone has done something a little, or wholly shameful that they simply want to forget and move on.
In 2013 the internet as we know almost died thanks to the carelessness of the media, secret agencies (from all over the globe) and misunderstanding from the people as to what this huge issue entails. |

Internet anonymity or non-anonymity.....it all turns out exactly the same.
I think you should have listened to some of those people. Tragic that you didn't, they might have been able to help you with your problem.

I think this game could achieve it's true potential if everyone had 1 account that was tied to a passport (not necessarily publicly viewable, but kept on record by CCP), and each character was visibly linked to the other characters on the account.
The spy game has ruined the potential of EVE to be more like the battle room of Ender's Game. It would be nice to be able to focus on fleets, fights, and the like without all the other baggage EVE brings with it. |

EVE isn't a battle arena, it is (among other things) an all encompassing conflict simulator. Spying is a part of conflict and without it 9and the danger of it) EVE would be much diminished.

Destroying the fundamental nature of the game as opposed to fixing things that already exist in the game as it is.

I would think MOST players would continue to do excatly what they do now.
I also think there would be a few who would change their playing stlye out of the fear of the potential of getting their real life a** kicked for being an ingame sociopath.
Then there would be the very minor percentage who would be worse ingame, wanting to to see their RL effects on their ingame targets. These are the RL sociopaths. |

I thought the whole "removal of internet anonymity" was the motivation behind Blizzard's RealID. We see how well that worked.
As for the OP, I expect we'd see a lot more reports to RL authorities regarding real life threats made from in-game, if there were an easy way to locate and report accurate information to the relevant authorities.
The risk of having your day ruined by other people is the cornerstone with which EVE was built and we want to keep that (infact, this is much more representative of the consensus opinion within CCP). |

I, and I'm sure many others disagree. Things like the spy game and various other opportunities for intrigue make up a lot of what I love about this game.

True fact, heh. Currently, yeah, most police will blow off "internet guy threatened me!" You get a slightly different response when you call up a local PD and say "Hey, Bob Miner, address 1234 IGotGanked Ave, is sending me death threats. He lives in your jurisdiction. I want to file a report." No, because people like you don't understand a very simple concept: Sometimes things you don't like still serve a purpose in a complex game.
I don't like how NPC corps are, but there is an advantage to their existence. People don't like ganking and scamming but without them EVE would be a very shallow game. Same with spying I don't much care for it (and have never engaged in it), but that kind of dark intrigue adds a whole hell of a lot of value and content to the game.

Oh god, not another one. Why can't you libertarians just focus on ganking miners and blaming them for being stupid and weak for being in the same system as you, and leave the hard thinking for others? It might be interesting but it wouldn't be a game that i'd like to play. Imagine the gankers out there that might wind up with real life death threats addressed to them personally at their home address. Not nice. I like eve but I am disturbed sometimes by the fact that a tiny minority of people cant separate the player from their character.
Ending internet anonymity might put an end to online role playing as well as allowing the emergence of online laws with real online consequences such as losing internet privileges for a month if you upset someone or dont tow the government's official party line.
I firmly believe that the internet has to remain free, open and anonymous because if you don't it will wind up becoming a technological socialist dictatorship colonized by money grabbing big businesses that will do everything that they can to keep you from making and posting content online whilst strong arming you into buying their authorized content. It's not the user interface that's complex it's the game and the manifold human interactions behind it.
I don't watch game of thrones like family guys know nothing about the Templars other than RL history snippets. Vampires don't exist Zombies might exist as drugged forced labourers in Haiti
Don't generalize. 99.9999999% of eve's players are not actually sociopaths. They are are just following and engaging in the game world in a way supported by it's rules, back-story and lore. Eve is dystopian as opposed to Utopian... Dumbing down of Eve Online will result in it's destruction... |

But EVE gives me pause on that, because as others have outlined, it would impinge on the awox/scam side of things.
I suppose games should hopefully be kept separate from such legislation and afforded space for their own "ingame" personas.

Just like when CCP had that ship design competition publicly blowing peoples anonymity, screw that! ...why a lot of 3d artists here didn't participate. But then it was less about this community and more about publicity, a reason in itself to say shove it. |

Aware, yes.
Also aware that bad things do sometimes happen to people on the internet, anonymity or not. And to be clear, I am referring to the InterNet as a whole and not just one subset.
Such is the world we live in, online and off.

Good for you, I have received racial abuse (in game) from an ******* who got a hold of my real life identity. Had people get hold of pictures of me twice and try to use them to harass me in game.
I am super thick skinned and very secure in myself so never even so much as bothered to report these losers but lets not pretend that this stuff doesn't happen in this game. |

I would not play EVE without anonymity.
99% of people would leave in-game defeats in-game. But that 1% - go ganking for a while, and you will see what they are like. One example: the minerbumping site had one article the other day showing an EVEmail where one person said "I would beat you bloody in real life if I could find you".
Only one person in game knows my IRL identity, and they knew me before either of us played EVE, they aren't traceable to me and we don't really interact much in game at all. (Although I do get the odd market tip from them). Set the universe on fire - then sell the survivors ash. https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=238931 - an idea for a new form of hybrid PVE/PVP content. My circumstance was similar. However my last name is shared by about 36 people in the entire country, so I'm pretty easy to find. It's why I post on an alt now, never share alt killmails, and have more or less given my main up to skill training, thanks to the info being out there attached to that character now. What's recognized as prejudice under the law doesn't include things like that. Unless you want to argue that being a member of goonswarm constitutes a 'Criminal background' or a 'sexual orientation'.

Insecure and paranoid people, who honestly believe that someone is going to come kick their butt over what happened in some spaceship game, would probably quit.
The entire basis of this question seems to be on the assumption that there are a large amount of very violent people who play eve, and given the nature of the game, and people that I have met, I think that is INCREDIBLY far from the truth.

It's not paranoia if it actually happens.
I would argue instead that those creepy, maladjusted individuals who cannot keep the game within the game should be forced out of this community, excised like the infection they are. "Verily, I have often laughed at the weaklings who thought themselves good because they had no claws."

There's a beautiful beach community where some friends of mine live and the general rule for all the condos in the community was to leave their doors unlocked (even when they're away). This was to demonstrate that being open didn't have to succumb to bad human behavior, and that it really didn't matter enough if you locked your door because someone who wanted to break in could break in at any time.
But humans are bad monkeys.
One night, this fellow (not a member of the community) got drunk and had a full bladder. He wandered into the condo community and eventually jiggled a door open. He then proceeded to urinate in the living room, fall on a glass coffee table and shatter it, and then went to sleep on one of the couches. The community started locking their doors since.
The point is, you don't put locks on things because their 100% failsafe. You put locks because they significantly reduce the chance of something breaking in. There are no guarantees in life, but life is unapologetically cruel to those who come unprepared. There is no such thing as "internet anonymity". It's a fallacy. It never existed.
Lets start at the basics. CCP has your name, CC number and IP address(es). They know who you are. Failing that, they know who bought the plex that you used to subscribe.
Further, an IP address and a time stamp is all it takes to get a name, address and another CC#, from your ISP. I don't even need a subpoena anymore. Yes, you or anyone else with a couple brain cells can send an identity request to most major ISP and most of them just respond without legal verification.
Now, many of you are thinking "but I can use __________" or " I only log in from the college network" or something to this effect. Proxies anyone? Yeah... you're misguided. First, because you can't actually play eve through the VAST majority of proxies. Some are banned by CCP, most just have too much latency. Second, because computer networks are terribly simple creatures. They ALWAYS identify who they are talking to, and it's just a simple matter of matching up logs to find out who did what. Seriously guys, it's not even hard.
So the real question you meant to ask is, what would happen if you HAD to put your real identity on your character and make it public. Because it's already "privately" known in pretty much every single user case.
Right now, it comes down to how motivated someone is to find you, and how much legal ground they can stand on. I can file a lawsuit, frivolous and stupid, claiming 1$ in damages and that gives me the legal right to subpoena your records. At which point I know everything about you I need to know, and I can drop the suit. This cost me about $50. And I'm no one in particular. If a law enforcement, or government, or large company wants to know who you are, and your eve identity, I assure you, it's not even remotely hard for them to get it.
Think about it. You aren't anonymous. You just aren't unmasked yet.
NOTE: I'm aware this wasn't really the question you asked, and I respect that, but I consider it a public server to inform people that their ideas of what constitutes anonymous are usually rather wrong.

Darwinism works.
The question is, given all the bad karma goons have wracked up both here and in many other games, including some spectacularly offensive ones (and not just offensive to me, I'm talking some breathtakingly offensive stuff) would a single goon ever be employed again? And how many of them would be subject to real world violence by people they thought it safe to...
'mock' seems to light a word. What's a good word for mocking the deaths of the 9/11 victims? I can't really find an appropriate one and I have a fairly large vocabulary. |

Well there was a story about a Counter-Strike player who hunted someone down and stabbed for beating them in a knife fight. Obviously since they suck at knives the guy survived.
Anyways, if you take a gander on just about any mildly controversial Facebook page you'll see that real names pose no real obstacle to spewing out hatred on the internet. What makes internet rage so easy is that you don't have to look the person in the face and say it. If we all arrange a GD picnic it would probably be slightly more amiable. |

There have been quite a few cases where people have been murdered over game items. Off the top of my head, there was a stabbing in China for example, where the guy DIDN'T live. There was a murder suicide in South Korea where a woman got Blizzard to ban her ex's WoW account. There have been a lot of fun things like that.
That's not even getting into stuff like Goonswarms SL branch WTC reenactment or any of the other stuff that their many branches have done that people OUTSIDE the game would find deeply offensive, but get away with due to Internet Anonymity. |

Frankly, if it came to that, Goons would probably be less worried about retaliation in RL than most folks. After all, if you were disturbed enough to actually try and bring your fantasy life grudge to bear in reality, what would protect you from them?
Of course, being intelligent (if obnoxious) folks, they would simply gather evidence and point law enforcement in your direction and let the inevitable happen. But if thing got out of control, I somehow doubt the disturbed loner with anger management issues is going to end up coming out on top vs. a very large, very bold, and very tech savvy community of that size.
Or even more likely, they would escalate things and end up making a very tidy side income by bringing law suits against anyone foolish enough to come take a poke at them. How much of a difference would it make in the Eve universe knowing (PlayerX) is really John Doe? How many players would continue to actually play? Would it mean the death of Eve as we know it or merely an evolution to a nicer universe?
Trackable identity in real life is one of the main reasons why the real world isn't more like EVE, and certainly if identity was trackable in the game, EVE would be a much kinder, gentler place. Conversely, if identity were as un-trackable in real life as it is in EVE, the world would be a dozen times worse of a hellhole than it is. Fundamentally, trackable identity means you can be held accountable for your actions.
Lack of trackable identity in the game is also the main reason why it isn't a very good simulator of real life - i.e. it doesn't actually reveal some dark, Lord of the Flies side to human character when people are free, it only reveals what happens when you don't have trackable identity in a game.
Basically, in real life, the cost of hiding your tracks is usually greater than the benefit you get from trolling, so from a standing start most people don't bother, the benefit of being nice and toeing the line is much greater; however, once a few have started, ways and means of getting round these things get passed on, and that's why there's always a criminal "class", but it's always fairly restricted sociologically (on the whole, usually to familiies, actually).
Internet anonymity is also one of the main reasons why we can't have nice things in MMOs - i.e., there are all sorts of possible MMOs out there that from a design point of view would be intricate and wonderful to play, if everyone played by the rules, but because of internet anonymity, game developers have to waste their time building in safeguards against griefing, exploitation, etc., so MMOs tend to fall to a lowest common denominator of gameplay design.
And even with trackable identity in the real world, because some people will take the choice to try and evade consequences, that's also partly the reason why we can't have better societies - so many safeguards have to be built in against "free riding" of one kind or another, i.e. societies have to be robust against all kinds of exploitative moves, that they tend to end up bland and progress is very slow.

Oh yes, because public identities would curtail all of those horrific crimes that occur in EVE now like...
Name calling, Ganking your ship, Making a joke at your expense, Giving an opinion that differs from your own, Trolling you, Being blunt, Lying to you, Scamming you out of imaginary pixels, Out playing you in game.
The list goes on and on.
Let's push for this change right away, to finally put an end to the horror that I outlined above. We cannot tolerate these atrocities one moment long.
Because once the privacy curtain is raised nerds from all over the world will rise up (individually of course, because they don't know the first thing about social interaction) and hunt down those psychotic bastards that have the gall to separate fantasy from reality, or commit the unforgivable crime of being rude.
Thank goodness this can't possibly backfire and actually give the more aggressive members of our community even more tools to mess with people. There are loads of problems that could come out of being forced to use your real life identity in this game (or any game), and it has nothing to do with sociopathic carebear morons who think that they are entitled to harass people IRL for killing their hulks.
Some people don't wish to have their real life identities connected to this game. They might have jobs where such a connection would be unfavorable. For example, your boss might not take kindly to you playing vidya games on your own time because if you do you're obviously playing them in the office instead of working. A less ignorant supervisor might not be happy if they find out that you play an MMO where lies, treachery and deceit are accepted norms, no matter how much you insist that all you do is mine asteroids. Worse if you work for a financial institution or are a public servant or intend to run for public office.
There's also transgender people who have not completed the process for a legal name change. The credit card they have on file is still under their original name, and such a thing would risk outing them (just google 'trans outing' if you aren't aware of how dangerous that is)
And some people just don't want to reveal their real life identities to strangers on the Internet. That alone should be a good enough reason to stop wanting to strip anonymity from EVE. Twitter: @EVEAndski

Again, this is, and has always been, a silly rationalization, pretty much tantamount to blaming the victim.
It's supposed to matter that you lose pixels, that's the whole point of a roleplaying game - you immerse yourself in a world where virtual stuff matters. Saying "oh it's just pixels" is like spitting in CCP's face, who have gone to all the trouble of making a game that's immersive, that makes the virtual stuff seem real to the imagination, in the game, for the time you're playing it.
Also, you are spending time building things, time out of your life, just the same as you would in real life, so a theft is a theft is a theft; destruction of your stuff is destruction of your stuff (within the parameters of the EULA - i.e. "your" stuff is in reality just rented). If the virtual stuff weren't supposed to matter, by design, and if losing it weren't supposed to hurt, then "HTFU" would be a meaningless statement. What you are hardening yourself to is the possibility that you will lose virtual stuff that you care about, and that it will hurt.
Even hardened players are hurt a little bit when they lose virtual stuff - the only difference is getting used to it, and not letting it throw you psychologically. And sure, in the couse of that bounce-back, "it's just pixels" is a helpful reflection. But if it forms the constant background of one's thought while playing EVE, then one is playing EVE wrong, because one is not roleplaying.
Or, to put this another way, you can hardly blame a player for doing exactly what the game designers intend - i.e. getting immersed in, and invested in the virtual stuff the designers have created. Nor can you blame people for being angry at people who destroy their virtual stuff - they're supposed to be angry, revenge is supposed to be a motivating force in driving conflict.
What you can twit them for is forgetting that they've voluntarily signed up for the possibility of losing virtual stuff that matters to them. |

There is no victim. This is a videogame, it is an entirely, 100% voluntary interaction.
No one is "the victim" if you get sniped in Battlefield 4. No one is "the victim" if they land on a Hotel in Monopoly. By agreeing to play the game in the first place, you have agreed to those interactions.
The only problem here is that people think they're special, that it won't happen to them. It's incomparably childish. "Verily, I have often laughed at the weaklings who thought themselves good because they had no claws."

Don't get me wrong, the loss of stuff in Eve is a huge factor which makes pvp and the whole game exciting. My point was if I get blown up by another player and then get told "noob", I still say "gf" and laugh about it because well... it is just pixel... I had every opportunity to avoid said fight, gank, war dec, suicide gank... it was my actions that got me in that situation.
So getting angry and blaming internet people to the point that I want to track them down is an issue with myself who can not separate realities.
Where in fact it's just easier to laugh, write it off and learn to not make the same mistakes again :)
May be my "it's just pixel's" attitude is wrong for eve no? -.-

What I'm objecting to is the kind of rationalization that people sometimes offer to try and soften the blow of EVE, as it were - to make it somehow seem like we're not being utter ***** when we're being utter *****.
That's not it.
This is, in fact, a game that allows you to be an utter **** - if you want to. It also allows you to be trustworthy and gain a reputation for trustworthiness - if you want to. It also allows you to blow that reputation - if you want to. This freedom is one of the main things that people who play the game love about it. Not the least result of this is the fact that trust is the game's most precious commodity - it's the other side of the coin.
The actions people do in-game, some of them, are actually morally wrong, and morally bad - it's pointless, and philosophically silly, to try and put a fig-leaf on it. If you've spent time building something up, that's time out of your life you can't get back, just the same as in real life. And theft or destruction of that virtual stuff is real theft and destruction of a virtual item that required real time and effort to get.
It's just that the game allows this sort of thing on the basis that we are consenting adults, and if you play EVE you VOLUNTARILY subscribe to having such otherwise morally reprehensible things done to you, as well as the possibility of doing them to others.
And when they're done, they're supposed to hurt, when they're done, you're supposed to be annoyed by it, it's supposed to matter - quite a lot in in-game terms, but even just a little bit in terms of real life.
It's like a fighting sport, or like BDSM. You might get hurt, but its' consenting, it's voluntary, so the consequences that would come from such actions if they were done in a non-consenting context, don't follow. But it's still in a slightly shady, grey area (g.e. some countries' laws frown on BDSM).
In the game, sure, it's just psychological hurt based on virtual loss - but as I said, the virtual stuff is bought in terms of real life time, real life that's ebbed away and can't be gotten back, and it hurts nonetheless, and it's supposed to, otherwise the developers have failed in their job of trying to immerse you in a virtual world.
The voluntary participation is the only thing that makes all of this ok and not subject to real-world moral judgement and consequences. It's the only thing that would make someone coming to your door and punching your lights out for destroying their Titan itself a morally reprehensible and illegal act. Not the fact that they "couldn't separate reality from fantasy". They might have done that, but the real problem is that they forgot that they voluntarily signed up for their pain. |

It hurts getting smacked in the face. It can hurt quite a bit, actually.
Am I immoral for smacking my girlfriend in the face? Most people would say yes, immediately, without stopping to consider the context. What about the fact that she tells me that she wants me to, that she gives every verbal and nonverbal indication of enjoying it when I do, and that I stop as soon as she wants me to and not a moment later? Also, she smacks me around too just the same.
EVE is basically the same way. Am I immoral for stealing billions of ISK from a corporate hangar? Some might say I am, but context. The victims chose to play a game where these things are known to happen and are cherished, and they have the option of leaving at any time. They also have the ability to rob me of everything I have in the game and generally make things hell. If you're referring to the other thread about the problem CCP has about the game's popularity, there isn't any problem, there's just a problem in perception in the way that CCP present the game. It's presented as a rather jolly, "nice" game, where you can be a hero, just like in other MMOs; whereas in fact it is (or can potentially be for new people) a "nasty" game where you're worth spit to begin with.
CCP's presentation and NPE needs to reflect this more from the start.
Of course, by now, EVE's been around long enough that there's a broad perception amongst the gaming public that EVE is a place where bad things can happen, which is undoubtedly one reason why it's not more popular than it is, but I'm sure there are still many, many potential players out there who would enjoy the game as it is, but would be, or have been, put off by, e.g., the PvE nature of the NPE, for example.
Perhaps by going so far as to split the NPE into two: into the current NPE for PvE players, and a PvP NPE where you're amongst other noobs either being trained for FW military style, or forced to fight each other, or something like that (although of course in a milder form than the full game, just so you can get the basics down).
But even the PvE version of the NPE needs to emphasize the real nature of the game. I was pleasantly surprised by the bit in the current NPE where you lose a ship - the only trouble is, the ship you lose is one that's given to you to lose. Really, you should be losing the very ship you've lovingly built as a newbie through the first few missions. (Bearing in mind that when you're new, time is dilated, and the tiny inconsequential newbie stuff looms relatively large in importance.) That way, even a PvE player will understand better what they're consenting to by subscribing.
CCP needs to attract only people who are likely to enjoy EVE as it is, and stick with it, instead of trying to attract those types of people as well as the types of people who are unlikely to enjoy what it really is, and unlikely to stick with it.
EVE is never going to be an MMO that's all things to all men, it's a niche game, but there's no reason why it can't still steadily grow like it has been, and continue to attract people who love what it has to offer. CCP just needs to be more upfront about what it is and stop pretending it's a multiplayer Elite. It failed to be that, and became what it is now, a long, loooonnng time ago, and the PvE/sim aspect is now almost completely vestigial, except insofar as it serves the "creation" side of the economy's creation/destruction cycle. |

Well, to take just a few examples, where on this webpage is that at all clear?
Or look at this - all very jolly, and quite unrepresentative of the player experience.
Or look at the Prophecy video - you'd think EVE was basically CoD in space, from that.
All these kinds of presentations make EVE seem just like any other MO - somewhere you can be a lone hero, or a big cheese. They need to ditch that angle completely, de-emphasize the dev-created game world, and emphasize the reality - that the most interesting events in the game are largely co-created by players, and that you may fail, lose stuff, and that you will be a meaningless schlub at the start.
There was an older video that was more along the right lines - the one about "choices" where the guy in the Rifter helps someone, allies with other players, etc. That's a fairly realistic possibility and shows the game more for what it truly is, although even that one is slightly dishonest in only presenting only a "nice" outcome |

"In EVE, a universe of unbounded opportunity awaits new capsuleers, whether they lust after wealth, crave the fight or simply yearn for adventure among the stars." - You can do what you want
"Discover an EVE destiny that reflects who you are with the help of our personality analysis test." - if you need this pathetic 5 result test to tell you to be a miner, you need to GTFO of my New Eden before I stick my thumbs in your eyes
I wasnt at Fanfest so I havent seen this Prophecy trailer of which you speak "They feel the need to cover their ears and eyes in horror at your very presence." - Pontianak Sythaeryn "I can't honestly believe that Peace and Prosperity has a face like a naughty sarcastic nun that's come to whip me with a ruler." - Domanique Altares -á-á ***FREE THE JITA 1*** |

Now that's more like it - still a tad overly-glamorous in tone, but centres on player interaction and shows possibilities in a realistic sort of way.

Yeah, the trouble is, some people will read it and understand that it obviously depends on various factors and success isn't guaranteed.
But many people will read it and think they'll get the positive outcome automatically. So they come into the game, leave disappointed.
It's all too jolly in tone, too similar to other MMOs.
I'm not saying that the latter type needs better advertising to attract them more or keep them in the game, I'm saying there needs to be better advertising so they don't even bother trying the game in the first place.
I think generally the idea with advertising is to cast the net wide, and I think that's the general idea CCP is following; but I think CCP needs rather to cast the net more narrowly and selectively, and be consistent about it throughout.
Also, I think there's probably something in the corporate culture and DNA where there's still a lingering illusion that the game is a multiplayer Elite type of thing - where NPC interaction, interaction with the dev-created NPC world - is still part of the gameplay, where the virtual world created by the devs matters in some way. But even if it was that right at the inception of the game, it's not that any more, and hasn't been for most of the life of the game. I don't think the type of player CCP needs to attract is likely (on the whole) to care much about the lore and background and the NPC world - it's not a sim any more, even if it ever was, all that stuff is just vestigial now. Sure, there has to be some consistency and some general hanging-together of the lore and stuff, and it's something probably most players check out on a rainy day; but I think to most EVE players (not all, of course, but probably most) it's just wallpaper.
The video baltec1 linked above is more like it - I think that's the direction they need to emphasise, for all the little areas of the game. Perhaps you could do it like they sometimes do in movies - there's a general trailer, and then there might be sub-trailers focussing on individual characters. Similarly, CCP could have a general line of trailers, then smaller ones focussing on different areas, from the perspective of player interaction, and showing the possibility of both failure and success. |

Neither I nor CCP can be held responsible for others stupidity
If you want to know about an MMO you might want to invest in, take the 21 day trial
That's what its there for
Adverts are worthless and reviews are garbage

Of course, but how do you so much as get the notion that you "might want to invest in" it in the first place? By its visible and audible presence in the media! If there were no advertising, no word of mouth, nobody would even get into a position to wonder whether there was this thing they might want to invest in.
So: the presence has to be coherent with the article, and it's not. And if CCP are wondering why the game isn't more popular (i.e. why they aren't retaining a healthier pop), one possibility (which I'm suggesting) is that the way they advertise it (so that the very idea of this being something one might want to invest in pops into someone's head) is out of date and incoherent with what EVE is, so they get a lot of bumbling innocents taking up trial accounts and a lot of people who would have been unsuited to the game anyway, leaving.
As opposed to: by advertising what the game really is, attracting people who really might want to invest in such a game. Then they try the trial. And more of those who try the trial stick with it. I think this would be a better option.
Anyway, drifting too far from the OP now, we should have gone through this in the other thread, I guess.
