Just something random I was thinking of. I'm sure many remember how awesome and expansive the universe seemed the first time you fly near a planet. Then you clip right through one and the immersion breaks. But you eventually accept it and move on.
I'm against the idea of course redirects around planets. However, I'm reminded of a quote from Cowboy Bebop: "Objects in hyperspace can still be seen by the naked eye. Of course, they can never interact with anything on this plane of reality."
A small visual cue or animation of this phenomenon would be many times better than just clipping through it. |

Just add sparkly, shiny effects when we're warping through a planet. If the game admits what is happening, a player will know there's an explanation. |

I asked months ago on the old forums for CCP to relocate planets and moons on grid. Basically it's a low priority.
The planets and moons were dropped there when the systems were created, years and years ago... the dev had short insight into the future when placing random planets directly in common warp aligns. this was simply kind of lazy and slutty development.
They should have fixed it during Dominion, before Tyrannis rolled Custom Offices out; now CCP just added more time-consuming fixes.
I'm kind of a perfectionist so it bothers me even after playing EVE for years. its a common fixable bug and disregarded. |

I don't think it's perfectionism to expect that we don't blast through planets and see the inner edges of the model as we do. It looks tacky, unfinished, and unprofessional. I had that feeling the first time it happened to me on Eve and that hasn't changed since. Same with plowing through stations on warp. There are some smart people at CCP who I am pretty sure can write a bit of code to create a curve. |

You do realize that your brain doesn`t have the ability to perceive that kind of information (a black image when passing through a planet - also other objects moving with a relative speed greater than your ship) Think about when you are in a train, and another one passes in the opposing direction; how many faces can you recognize? Think now if you are traveling with enormous speeds. The angular speed is great when obj are closer, and small when they are far - as the sun.
This is the same thing as the 25 frame movie, your retina sense it, but your brain doesn`t receive it.
Also passing through matter is perfectly plausible. You have atm passing through you and Earth, thousands of particles with 0 electronic charge, thus not affecting you at all, and they aren`t obstructed or diverted (maybe except by the gravitational field) at all.
Thinking that when you reach warp speed, your mass drops near 0 and assuming that you are able to drop your electronic charge also, you are able to pass through planets, stars etc.

Fine, but you're still in the middle of a planet, looking at ugly outlines for a couple of seconds (because you're always accelerating or decelerating when you pass through a celestial - never at full warp). Something, anything to make it look like you're passing through a solid, massive object, not a gigantic balloon of one way glass.
As for curving warp paths, that would be awesome. However, since NPCs don't even have the AI complexity to manoeuvre around asteroids, what hope have we of our ships computing warp paths around celestials? Even if it were possible, it would probably mess up your ability to align before warping. |

Well, as I said it before, physics, the structure of planets, mater, everything is there, but your brain perceives it like some residual frame in your peripheral field of vision. You have passed through the planet when you actually sense that in your brain as a visual, which combines with the current frame that is open space. There are tons of visual effects on the web, called visual illusions. Search it and you will be blown of how your eyes and brain work.

Think about, at the speed of 360 000km/h (100m/s - the speed of a bs) you would need a force = mass (of a BS) x acceleration (from 0 to 100m/s) at 90 degrees (a engine on the left or right side of the ship) to change you on a trajectory at 45 degrees. That is enormous. In non warp you are able to do that by increasing or decreasing the power of one of the rear engines. In warp, all the power in the rear engines capt. Try to unbalance that and you may hit a tree or smth.. No trees in space? How come. I want trees in space. Please CCP introduce trees in space. Who joins me in my dream for love and trees??

You math is off by a thousand. 100m/s is just 360km/h, not far from the top speed of a F1 car. |

This is the same thing as the 25 frame movie, your retina sense it, but your brain doesn`t receive it.
If I were you, I wouldn't be using pseudo-science to try and rationalise away an essentially 'emotional' issue - the two rarely mix well...
And as for your theory that the brain doesn't receive signals at speeds in excess of 25htz (or fps) - did you really think that through before you typed it?
Anyway, Winter is coming... So no thumbs up from me... |

Warping through a planet no longer involves clipping. There's a nice fade in/out effect. |

I only went whoah the first time I went through a planet. I thought I was gonna crash.
Does that count?
Edit: Also, don't warp drives gravitationally compress matter that they pass through? So shouldn't we be boring holes in all these planets? |

have to say the no-clipping through planets was a real bug bear for me, after getting a decent semi-cop out explanation from sum1 about it i accepted it bt thought it wouldnt be fixed for a Loooooooooooong time.
tbh i wasnt expecting suuch a wonderous update to this! makes me wanna fly my ships bitchingly fast into planets more and more! and thankfully it wont obliterate the population anymore! woop!
the one thing i REALLY like about the new warp effects is the refracting of the white light into its spectrum due to the warp distortions! F*****************KING BEAUTIFUL guys! seriously with all these updates my killboards gonna be a sea of red once on TQ with me flying round with my GUI off!
heh =) |

*LOL* I know, tell me about it... wtb 25fps monitor.... ;)
On a more serious note though, you've slightly mis-quoted me there, as it wasn't myself that said that, I was (in turn) quoting someone else.... but hey... the new effects are superb, so it's all good ;)
I'm also a bit drunk, so, I think I'll call it quits at this point (probably) and go play on Sisi... |

IMHO
We should go around the planet by dipping through the upper atmosphere in a translucent flame, colour depending on type of planet, at a slower speed 50-90% light speed. Then when passed the planet we speed up as normal. |

setting up the game to recognize a planet is coming up, alter your course around it (increasing warp time slightly), alter the art, etc would take a whole lot of effort - for something not much more eyegasmic than this.
also, EVE ships are unstable in the atmosphere - both aerodynamically and chemically. http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Tritanium |

Actually it wouldn't increase warp time, I came up with this idea a long time ago the first time my immersion was shattered: - Client receives a list of celestials in current system - Client does necessary "transitions" (either by warping around or through or light tunnel, etc) when calculating a warp tunnel intersects a celestial - According to server, path taken is straight line
The calculations are not hard (straight line intersection), the transitions aren't hard either (approximate spline curve around celestial or simply follow it's circumference), and time can be sped up locally when warping around so that the warp time is equal as the server would perceive in a straight line.

You do realize we alloy tritanium to get rid of some of the properties.
Becuase if we didnt our own ship's atmospheres would rot the entire ship out.

It would increase time on the client though and server.
