My smartphone is coming to the end of its life, and I'd planned to get the next model, the Sony Ericsson P990. However it runs Symbian3.0, not Windows mobile.
If you tell me that there are NO plans within the next 2 years or so to port to Symbian, I'll get a Windows mobile phone/pda.
If you tell me you will/probably will then I'll get the SE.
Help me Obi Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope.

If this goes live then there is NO reason not to offer another out of game access system, such as a web system to allow changing skills or market actions.
By introducing this they will (if it goes public) already of lost the "total emmersion" feeling they so proudly hold up.

I just came from a presentation of this thing by the programmers. For those of you that don't know this already the EVE mobile client is a project at Reykjavfk University. The guys programming the mobile client were showcasing their work today as a part of the school project.
Let me begin by saying the client looks damn good today, I saw it at the first public showing last year and it has come a long way since then. It now supports character sheet, wallet, market and evemail. No undocking or chat and no escrow yet.
It runs on Windows Mobile 5 and since CCP have a deal with Microsoft I seriously doubt it will be made available for other OS. The devices shown today were a Dell PDA with 640*480 resolution and a phone with 320*240 resolution. It supports landscape view and does so pretty smoothly, switching viewmodes is fast and the data tables resize the columns in relation to data being displayed.
CCP's representative said it would be some time before the client would be officially released. Even though the project as a whole belongs to CCP they will need to hire staff to finish it because the guys working on it so far have all decided to stay in school rather than take up CCP's offer of hiring them. On top of that there are considrations regarding the additional load this could cause on the game server. This is also one of the resons why a web based interface is out of the question, the server needs to be able to support 27.000 players and any load that cuts that number would be counterproductive to say the least. Eve Mobile is built to minimize data transfer and does so admirably, when you open the market for an example the server isn't queried untill you have browsed throught the interface to the category you want displayed.
The client looks and feels like an extension of EVE and this is a big issue with CCP since, as previsouly stated, they feel immersion is an important factor. I don't think there will be any screenshots or official CCP info at this time because the project is in the process of being moved over to them and is a long way from being released at the moment. CCP are way more into the project now than last year though so in my oppinion they will see this through and release it as soon as possible, if only for the bragging rights of being the first MMO with a handheld client.

Just a little thouht on the "use Java and it will solve all problems" issue. It might sound great att starters, then you look in to it and find that almost all phones with Java support does it a little bit different and you'll have to make diffrent Java dists of the application for each mobile phone supported and end up with a lot more work than you expected. And then the userbase starts having the "I need support for phone model" thing......

I am so pumped about this! I use a t-mobile MDA running full wm5 - how awesome would it be to control certain aspects of eve from a mobile phone?
I just hope it works over GPRS to some extent, now that would rock.

Every time I see this thread I still get this twinge of sorrow that it isn't abotu what I thought it was originally...
Some sort of eve motor vehicle to be unveiled at e3 to promo the game. Maybe some sports car that looked like a rifter.

The only other problem is cost of data tranfer over mobile phones. Im looking at two pound 50 pence per 1mb on vodafone which would get very expensive connecting to the eve server and downloading the information
I cant see it being very viable unless the prices come down for gprs data tranfer. Or am i wrong and it doesnt work like that.

I can see haow this would work great if you have an always on connection. Too bad I have dialup. This is one of the things I'm really hoping they'll implement soon in the game. I would be just happy to have the skill changing ability itself for now. The other stuff can come later.

Sweet news!
One question though, will this mobile client run on regular Windows PCs too? Because, for example, I'd like to change a skill from work, but our PCs there don't have graphics cards that want to run EVE.
Are they compatible? --- WTS: Forum Signatures, 30mil a piece. Evemail me!

I saw Palm Emulators when I was lookin into programing for the Palm a while back, so I'd imagine there would be simmilar things out there for runing Windows Mobile software.
TBH if we ever see Eve mobile released, I gess I'll be buying a PocketPC... -----

So, it's been over 6 mos, where is a beta or a released product? I got one of these Cingular 8525s that has some high speed data transfer that would be great for it. I get that you are busy, or you have chosen not to release it, or some other issue but, give us some info, please.

The project was in limbo for a while due to the fact the developers on the project had moved on to other things. Some of the guys working on it were in their final year of university and were working on it as part of their final projects. They graduated before the product was finished. There is now a new team working on the project who aren't students.

Halldor installed the EVE Mobile client on my MDA (GSM/cell with WinMobile5) and it looks sharp. Waiting for a mirror of my work and play accounts so I can demo with real information, not a newbie character on a demo account. Unfortunately, no port over to TQ yet, so the changes made on EVE Mobile won't propagate to TQ, but it looks damn cool!
I'll try to get some pictures and upload them. Might have to bribe Alli to show me how to upload the images to the home site.
ZOMG I have an MDA too...please please please make this work soon! @_@

Dammit. I was holding out changing phones until this came out. (I work for a US GSM carrier and get phones cheap cheap cheap, but only 1 phone a year)
I just ordered a new phone today, and it isn't Windows Mobile...and EVE Mobile is the ONLY reason I was going to get a Windows Mobile equipped phone.
Damn and blast.

Currently just Windows Mobile. Let me tell you, it's really cool to check your evemail, market orders and skill training from a PDA. It feels so Jack Bauer.
Pfft.. Gief java version, and I might even pay for it :D I already spend all my time to/from work browsing eve-o/corp/alliance forums, might as well play if I had the chance

Edited by: Ritzenhoff on 27/06/2007 22:01:18 I happen to have done plenty of mobile application development. Just FYI, some approximate numbers:
J2ME (Java 2 Micro Edition) is on approx 90% of mobile phones
Symbian phones are 10-15% of the European market (and also run J2ME if you are wondering why we add up to over 100% already)
Windows Mobile is under 5%
Palm OS is pretty much dead in the water (sorry Palm fans, but it's true, I loved my Palm but Symbian does it all better)
And in the US there is also BREW which is on something like 30% of the phones over there but is almost non-existent in Europe
It doesn't make any impact whether the phone is GSM or CDMA based, btw.
