meh ... I script to avoid stacking penalties, never change them on the fly.
though TBH I fly a Domi when using drones so omni matters less
Isn't 30 seconds also the reload time on RHML ? maybe the new server tick is 30 seconds |

They tripled the cycle time of Omnidirectional Tracking Links, 30 seconds is long enough to prevent swapping scripts in combat. Now I'd like to know if the already nerfed Omnis were so overpowered that they had to be made even worse.

Minor nerf if they're actively swapping scripts. It'll be damn annoying to wait 30sec before you can swap. Cap draw isn't an issue for omnis. |

i guess this is more serious to ships that only use one instead of 3 omnis, because on those with 3, you will be using the same scripts most of the time any way.
so i'll take that less cap draw, thank you. |

Yep, you see, omnidirectional link that work like other tracking computers use cap. New players have poor cap skills. Most new players also play in high sec, therefor Omnis using cap is a DIRECT nerf to high sec.

TBH the capacitor draw was a zero issue prior to the nerf. This is more like a poor aatempt at a appology from CCP to say yea we know your taking up the poop shute but hey look we cut the cap use in half.
This change will certainly stop me from swapping scripts mid fight. Its like they are trying to kill drone play. |

CCP hates high sec. Pretty simple answer. Just look at the total set of changes being inflicted on high sec. They demonstrate the contempt CCP has for the largest segment of its player base (soon to not be its largest segment).

F1 monkeys in null don't change scripts nearly as often as someone ratting in a mission, where the frigs are on top of you, and you have to now have to wait 30 seconds to get a chance to shoot them.
So if this was really about cap usage, then CCP could just as easily cut the activation cost by 3. But no, they made the module even more unusable.
edit:
I best not complain though about the fact that tracking computers have a cycle time of 10 seconds, because CCP might then just "balance" those as well to 30 seconds. Most people viewed Orwell's writings as a warning. The harper regime and the goons treat them as a guidebook. |

At the risk of repeating myself, the reasons for the 30s change are:
Reduced server load.
Sentry 'balancing'.
To encourage use of the new drone low-slot mods which will be more "balanced" (e.g. TEs versus TCs) thus making the low-slot fixed "generally" bonused low-slot omni-equivalent a valid choice over the 30s to change, all-or-nothing min-maxed Omnis. Which has the "side" effect of DDAs competing with low-slot Omnis and thus reducing drone DPS (aka more balancing,) while also making the new faction DDA's more attractive.
It also opens up the market for specialized drones, e.g. drones with a inherently better than tracking or range as a means of compensating for the 30s inflexibility of the Omni script swaps.
The lower cap use is just a weak attempt to assuage CCP's guilt and mollify/distract the player base.
For bonus karma (negative karma is still karma,) CCP will probably make it so the mid-slot Omnis won't work without a script, ergo, you can either have an Optimal bonus or a Tracking bonus, but not both, thus making the low-slot Omni modules attractive/competitive.

This was just some arbitrary change to game play, another huge nerf to drone users, without any warning nor consultation. Most people viewed Orwell's writings as a warning. Wait, I just noticed this.
What? What kind of drones are you using that -need- better tracking to hit frigs that are already "on top of you". Sentries aren't going to be able to hit regardless, heavies can't catch them, mediums will apply damage poorly and lights don't benefit greatly from more tracking anyways.
Is this another example of you raging at CCP to cover the fact that you have a poor grasp of game mechanics and aren't very good at PVE? It seems so, because this isn't the 1st time you've said something that even a novice PVEr would know is BS (you know, like how in one sentence you say you've run thousands of missions just to turn around and demonstrate that yo don't know that NOSs aren't EWAR lol)

And just who uses omnidirectional links in such numbers that it causes lag? Nullsec, that's who. So CCP bows to the pressure of their true RMTing nullsec masters and nerfs high sec missions runners so null sec blobs can be more effective in RMTing.

Omnis would then become annoying because they have to update those simulation objects once at the start of every cycle, and it can't be batched under the current implementation. This as opposed to, say, DDAs or navcoms, which are applied once, when the drone is first deployed and set up as an object.
But by the same token, does not every cycled module have the same kind of impact? Is it really that much harder to update active objects in space? Or is it, once again, just a matter of there being a fsckton of drones flying about? GÇ£If you're not willing to fight for what you have in GëívGëí you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.GÇ¥

I suppose I could see it, other modules update the current object, the Omnis update multiple OTHER objects ... I don't know how they set it up, but you're probably locking each of the objects, updating, releasing, and on to the next, otherwise things would get messy. It's not like the alterations to the current object where you already have it locked, no extra overhead... |

Also agreeing here... if every cycle of an omnidirectional causes an update to each drone I'm fielding, it sounds to me like making these scripted and cycling modules was a poor choice for the hamsters' sake - especially now that it takes multiple omnis on one ship to do what they use to do.

You really don't think things through do you CCP?
You are likely to get two passive modules ... one like the range scripted omni and one like the tracking scripted omni. Not a happy situation.
In reality for the majority of PvE people that tend to fly a Ishtar or Dominix with 3 or sometimes 4 omnis, the work-around is stagger your omnis so they cycle at different times. That way when you want to charge from three range omnis to three tracking omnis you can change one every ten seconds.
Still sux for people with just the one omni though. |

You guys want to know why missiles will never ever be improved to be a viable weapon system for large scale warfare?
A Domi pilot has 5 weapons deployed in space at one time, tracking usually one target. Now imagine some situation where a missile pilot might have, depending on ranges, 6 or 7 missiles deployed, and they might be tracking multiple targets, if the launcher cycle time is fast enough, or if the pilot split his launchers. Yes, I am sure the null sec theory-crafters are working hard on RMHL meta's, but I have yet to hear about any massive fleets using them.
My opinion on the skill level of the game designers in question is well-documented. The self-inflicted problems and the "solutions" to these problem just make me smile, very sadly.
If CCP actually fixed the real problem, the use of the blob as the weapon of choice, all these other lag issues go bye bye. But we know that will not happen, because thinking about changes to the null sec political and economic problems is really hard. Most people viewed Orwell's writings as a warning. Yeah, see this is what I mean. You're talking in circles to try to get away from your comment that this is a change (presumably asked for by the all powerful cartels) directed specifically at highsec and intended to be a nerf. You don't believe that, because only someone with an actual mental impairment can get so stuck in a cycle that everything has to be about their pet bugbear.
You bit too hard on this one, and in doing so have revealed the Dinsdale persona as a troll. You had a good run, though. "Do not touch anything unnecessarily. The simplest solution would be to have additional attacks on the same target have some form of stacking, probably by having each attack add a small level of "resistance" to that attacks type of effect for a very short time (1 server tick?). Of course this would not help with server load as it introduces load of its own.
Its what Goblinworks proposed for AoE attacks in pathfinder online https://goblinworks.com/blog/i-fell-into-a-burning-ring-of-fire/

Except that the drone carrier line doesn't end at the dominix, and unlike bigger missile boats, carriers field more drones. Unless they make a missile logistics capital, we are stuck with capital logistics being the preserve of drone carriers. |

It's not just the EVE way, it's the new player friendly way.
Think about it. If, as some suggest, pricetag becomes the force multiplier, then new players will by definition never be able to be effective.
They don't have weight of skillpoints, and they do not have the spending ability that the veterans have. Those are things they basically can't have.
What they can have is numbers. That is not out of their reach.
Suggesting that "teh blob needs nerfed!" is suggesting that new players should not be effective, period.
Which is why I would love to know how Dinsdale would propose to nerf "the real problem" as he puts it. I am fully aware that what he really means is nerf having friends because he has none, however. Actually, I was thinking of how to deal with the problem of the blob over beer and wings tonight. The only real approach I could take to tackle the problem is "if the cartels cannot counter the solution, then it has potential". Fundamentally , it comes down to this: You have to carve out their economic hearts in a manner where scaling to immense size is incredibly inefficient. I am talking not so much on the blob in a a battle, but on the size of an organization.
But naturally, any conversation about limiting the size of a cartel is a non-starter with CCP and especially the CSM.
There are ways to do it, but there is zero chance that cartel leaderships will allow their income streams to be eviscerated. Most people viewed Orwell's writings as a warning. The harper regime and the goons treat them as a guidebook. |

no, hard-limits don't work, they are very exploitable, don't even talk about sharding whatever, and AOE-type weapons, created to avoid ship clumping, worked so well that whoever had the bigger titan blob wins, so for the time being, and until someone comes up with a miracle, all you can do is make the game playable while having blobs around. It was the very tech cartelling goonswarm that lobbied for the destruction of and thus ruined the tech gravy train, ie they always believed that income starting from the average player was more important than alliance income - and they supported that belief with actions.
In any case the 3 elements you need to understand the change are.
CCP says performance. I say carriers have lots of drones. Sal Landry says, omnis update all the drones every time they cycle.
That is plainly the performance problem being optimised. |

its 500 carriers on a grid, each with 13 to 15 drones out all being updated by multiple omnis per carrier.

It's been stated elsewhere, but the point is that the only viable solution is a mechanic for sov battles that encourages MULTIPLE, SIMULTANEOUS battles to occur across multiple systems. If the mechanic requires 5 victories in 5 systems then current blob tactics are no longer viable; or at least not until the average null entity gets 5x larger.
What would such a mechanic look like? I have no clue. But presumabky paid game designers should be able to come up with SOMEthing. Constellation control hubs or something, I dunno. Regardless, the point is not to gimp a large fleet thru artificial penalties or weird stacking mechanics. If you want to blob, blob away. The point is to change sov mechanics so that the entity with five smaller fleets wins the strategic victory over the giant blob fleet every time, at least when it comes to the fights people care about (sov/ownership stuff). |

TIDI is protective of a lot of issues, including client networks and clients themselves, both of which can choke if event spam is too fast.
If you have 1000 omnis, affecting an average of 13 drones, you have 13000 operations per omni cycle, - 1300 per (1 second - no tidi) server tick under the old model, and 433 per server tick under the new.
Needing to do something thousands of times per second obviously stands out on the profiler after a while, there are finite numbers of discrete things a processor can do in 1 second.
I'd expect though the omni issue itself is mostly confined to the server processing the grid itself though, since the game doesn't deign to tell me what tracking, optimal or falloff actually applies to my drones anyway, so its not marshalling it and sending it.

So there are one of a few ways that can play out.
Either you simply make nullsec itself totally unviable to live, manufacture, and sustain anything in, or you attack corporation and alliance scaling itself, which places artificial limits on everyone.
The first you may as well just delete null security space entirely. The second you have crippled anything besides solo players, casuals, and small penny ante corporations. Which while I'm sure those results would suit you just fine, those suggestions pretty much show that you're no better than the supposed cartels, you're just less well organized.
The not so well hidden point of the exercise was that your soluton not eliminate a third of the subs in the game, bro. "Verily, I have often laughed at the weaklings who thought themselves good because they had no claws."

I'm playing Devil's advocate, of course.
I fully suspect that, if he replies to the point where his suggestion would basically eliminate either a huge number of subs or functionally remove an entire area of space, he'll say something along the lines of "break a few eggs".
So what he would be doing then, is suggesting that CCP toss aside an established, long term loyal, and paying playerbase in exchange for a purely theoretical one (casuals) that he promises is bigger than ones who are being told they aren't welcome in the game anymore.
So... Trammel.
Nevermind the fact that he would be fundamentally shattering the sandbox as well, by setting upper limits, saying "you are only allowed to win this much".

Saw your post, realized it was a universal truth. Fixed.
Some people can't deal with their own impotence. So they try to use other means (in games it's the developers or trying to get players to 'see the light' with a bunch of doomsday predictions, in real life it's the government or trying to get other citizens to 'see the light' with a bunch of doomsday predictions.....) and most times fail due to lack of support and an inability to get their point across to others without making those other people really really dislike them. At the end of the day, they fear failing more than they hate their enemies, so they don't even try.
The more these 'crusaders' talk the stronger there enemy gets. I spent a whole gaming career shooting at Goons and Goon allies (across multiple games, come on my bridge and dance while shooting me will you StarFleet Dental, screw you!!!!!! ), it didn't take me but a week of reading forums to change my mind and make me think I might want to join Goons myself lol.
If someone really wanted to get the goons, they wouldn't be posting conspiracy theories about Mittani RMTing his way to real life riches on forums and blogs on the internet. They'd stop sounding crazy, go to other games to recruit people victimized by Goons (of which there are many), bring them to EVE, put them in rifters and use the combination of anger and fun to do to Goons what Goons did to BoB.
That, of course, will never happen, because it's easier and safer for some people to keep praying that EVE eventually fails enough that 'new investors' by the game and through some anti-capitalist magic decide that they don't want 45,000 constantly paid subs but would rather gamble on the fickle and easily bored carebear crowd..... |

Some folks like to grasp at straws i guess. They get so caught up in the 'problem' or thing they don't likke that ANY solution sounds good, which is why they miss the obvious.
The obvious in the case is basically Malcanis' Law. ANYTHING they try to do to artificially help some downtrodden group (new players, small alliances, whatever) will end up only enriching the people they were trying to nerf (vets, big alliances, the evil cartels).
What would happen if CCP ever tried to do anything like this is that when it failed (and it would), the agitators who saw the change as a chance to beat you people (damn that sounded racist, good thing "Goon' isn't a racer lol) would simply blame it's lack of success on some conspiracy or some lack of 'DEVskill' on the part of CCP rather than realizing that it was their own beliefs that are at fault.

With 5 drones in space, that one module causes 5 server interactions every 10 seconds. Now it causes 5 every 30 seconds instead. They have just cut 2/3 of the server load of that one module. And typically people used two of them.
Looks like they are finally getting down to giving the axe to mechanics that unduly contribute to server lag.

Presumably because they need to update the attributes of 5 objects in space every cycle instead of 1 i think you meant numbers range from 2 to 8 actually? Hint: ships have 2 to 8 physical guns/turrets I would imagine that since all skill and module effects apply across all of a ship's turrets simultaneously, as long as they're the same exact models (completely the same name), it's probably easier to apply a tracking computer's effects to 8 turrets than to 5 drones which are in space and therefore behave differently. In fact the only difference with turrets is that each turret's damage is calculated separately. The only paramater that changes between each calculation is the random number used to determine whether the weapon hit or missed, and how much damage was done. Since this calculation is repeated with all of the other parameters the same, that part of the calculation is probably only done once and then the requisite number of comparisons with the random number are done. Going back a month or two omnis did not cycle at all so they are fixing a problem they created all by themselves.

While this is true, it's a good thing for them to behave in a self correcting fashion. There is a whole lot I will put up with to help with server load.
Besides that, I can fully imagine how the whole conversation went.
"Ah, crap, Omnis needed the nerf to be cycling, but we just increased overall server load!" And then someone laughs and makes an "emergent content" joke. "Verily, I have often laughed at the weaklings who thought themselves good because they had no claws."

If they ever get that desperate, I hope they would use the guristas style and just condense drones fivefold. Instead of calculating 6 "ships" per player its suddenly only 2.
Related to this, will the addition of fighters and fighter bombers using player skills and being affected by modules in the upcoming expansion use more server resources? I'm very in favor of the change, just curious if it will make blob fights more laggy even with the actual number of drones being reduced by half. |

CCP need to do more of this: Think twice act once.
Many moons ago when I left school, my first job was as an apprentice engineer, and we had it drummed into us that the most important rule was not to leave something in a worse state than we found it.
I do not doubt for a moment that the whole drone issue - causing lag etc - is a serious and complex issue for CCP to deal with, my argument is that too many of the 'tweaks' over the past 18 months or so appears to be rushed and ill thought through.

And now this.
If the passive omni was too OP, and needed to be nerfed to TC levels, and now it's ability to adapt to a new situation is nerfed even further, can it's effectiveness be a bit better in return (and still below the old passive's level)?
Any word on how the work on the sentry information display issue is coming along?
Now that new passive modules are going to be introduced, was changing omnis to active really so important? Missiles don't have tracking computers and enhancers, why did drone modules have to be made resemble those of guns that much more, if it only breaks things? Seems like a short sighted way to fix an issue that obviously doesn't scale well.
Wouldn't just splitting them into 3 different passive mods be a more efficient and scalable option? It would upset the min/max people but give scalability and reduces overall server usage. CCP's Motto: If it isn't broken, break it. If it is broken, ignore it. Improving NPE-á/ Dynamic New Eden |

So I'm curious.
If a code rewrite on these modules were to happen in the future that would make the server CPU usage go away would these changes be reverted since they aren't for "balance"? If the answer is yes, is a code rewrite/change possible likely in the future ~next year?

Jeez, Kaarous, give it a rest already.
You used to be my favourite crazy poster, now you just constantly whine that that game is not hard enough and mean enough, especially anything to do with hi-sec.
Perhaps CCP should do something about the large fights in null which no one outside of null cares about to improve server performance?

TBH ... my mission alt rarely changes scripts on my L4 Domi and there have been occasions (because optimal unbonused bouncer range for my Domi is pretty much MJD distance anyway) I have not turned them on and did not notice for a while.
This change will not effect the hull bonused ships like the Ishtar and Domi that much.
I expect it will be rather annoying for people flying Vexors and Prophecies.
