One of the reasons so many people don't do solo fights is because of the learning curve in solo pvp. First and foremost, your skills will matter. Most solo pvp pilots have also focused solo pvp skills maxed out, and depending on what ships they fly, can resort to the use of drugs as well, with other words, if you got mediocre skills, chances are you most likely stand no chance vs a more experienced pvp player.
So step 1. Those main skills, and weapon skills need to be all max lvl, I went as far as having specialization skills also lvl 5. Thermodynamics lvl 5 is a must too, because you basically overheat your weapons in solo combat the most.
Step 2. Basically, here is where you just go and find fights. Chances are you will die horribly the first few times, but you will learn this way. You will get to know people's tactics, what their ships can do, what the limit of your ship is, and you will learn that way.
But it is normal to lose a lot of ships initially, the solo pvp players know their thing, so don't let this bring you down. A good advice is getting in touch with the guys that kill you initially, ask them about their fits, what they recommend, etc. Again, solo pvp is definitely not the easiest thing in eve to learn, but once you learned it, you will become addicted to this game because for some reason I never forget the 1 on 1 encounters or 1 v 4 encounters that I won, and this is one of the things that also keeps me playing.
One more thing. This is an expensive part of eve, so be ready to have a good source of isk income if you are getting into solo pvp, because you will lose more ships, and also, you will need to learn to do multitasking, such as checking people's killboards to see if they are solo fighters as well or if they are gank bait, and you need to check on some ship's what your opponent most likely is flying (example brawl comet or kite), with other words, in solo pvp you are constantly doing your intel/home work, because this increases your survivability the most. The second you start slacking with your homework/intel is when you start losing more ships. |

you should be able to get a solo kill a few hours after rolling a new toon with some very basic skills plugged in. I think my record on an alt is about 44 minutes. eve is easy. |

Why solo? Its easier to learn in a group. Get into some of the public fleets if your corp doesn't have any.
Even the best solo pilots have high attrition rates. There is just nothing you can do if you jump into 10 instalocking t3's in nullsec as a solo pilot except die horribly. Or perhaps sing if they let you try.
Thing about fights is that to win you want it to be unfair in your favor. Hell even duels are a bit of a joke. Without links your not going to do well a lot of the time. |

Nardil Cardizem wrote:So I have almost 7M SP, and I've lost about 50 ships trying to PVP, and have yet to get one solo kill. I'm honestly ready to quit. How many ships did you lose before you started getting kills? The majority of fights I end up in I can't even seem to get any good damage to the other ship, which is even more frustrating.
Not counting the ships I lost when I didn't want to try PVP, I think I lost a couple dozen ships until I learned enough to not be stupid anymore.
And I really was stupid. Not-switching-your-tank-on stupid. I got my first and last solo-PVP kill back in February, hadn't had time to do PVP since then.
A duo of assault frigs had wasted a Thorax I had lying in wait for them, so I went back and purpose-build a Caracal to smash the Wolf I still remembered being there. (I died so fast I didn't even notice the second T2-frigate until I was back for the second round.)
And even though I still ****** up seriously (like not taking navy cap boosters for my ancillary shield boosters and not overheating them until the fight was close to over), I got the Wolf. Right then I violently exploded, thanks to the other assault frigate and my own **** ups, but it was still great fun.
If I wasn't mainly an explorer travelling around Eve like a nomad, I would go back to shooting people directly. Welp, maybe after the balance passes over my two favourite ships have come, I'll go back to shooting people instead of red crosses. |

First true solo: It was my first PVP kill (I'd had losses before that). I think I'd been playing 10 weeks or so at the time.
First 1v2: About 12 weeks (I killed one and drove the other from the field)

Still not done it, not killed a player in EVE yet. I'm a PvE-er and usually take precautions to avoid trouble as much as possible, but every now and then I get a fit about my kb and feel I ought to do something about it, but the kind of aggressive play I would have to engage in to learn PvP properly as Barb would go against her character. On the other hand, even when I've started a new pilot with the intent of learning PvP "properly", again, I've never been able to bring myself to play aggressively, attack players for no in-game reason, etc., and the new toon reverts to another goody two-shoes. It's completely silly, I know, but I just can't do it. I can't even roleplay a "bad" character ffs! :)
Having played the game for a while solo PvE in lowsec lvl 4s, I've been in a few situations where I've been scanned down and not been able to get out of the mission area quickly enough (despite the usual precautions, it can still happen sometimes) and I've able to hold players off so they either get scared as they get into structure and run off, or get bored and run off, but with no tackle I'm not able to make a kill in those situations. But then I've been successfully ganked on such occasions just as many times.
I did have one glorious fight once when I was determined to look for trouble, undocked in a triple rep autocannon Myrm in lowsec, got attacked by two guys, and was doing pretty well (one of them was deep into structure, my Mym's tank had hardly broken a sweat) and then their cavalry showed up (tackling frig and 3 BCs of various factions IIRC), the wounded guy scooted, I held the cavalry off for a good long while until I ran out of cap booster (that triple rep Myrm tank is an absolute BEAST). A good time was had by all, and "gf"s all round, but I still wasn't quite able to finish anyone off (in this case my stupidity was changing targets and trying to get the tackler off me instead of finishing off the first guy - I ought to have realized I wouldn't survive, but should have tried to take down at least one player).
I'm well over the adrenaline dump by now, and actually able to think a bit when a fight starts, and I've also got some sense of the rock/paper/scissors of the game, so I think one day I'll do it, either on Barb or an alt. |

For me it was about 2 months until my first solo kill. Corp tournament, so maybe this doesn't count. First "real" solo kill about one year later.
If you want to learn solo PVP, I would recommend RvB. They have an entire system only dedicated to 1v1 with a special set of rules (most importantly to respect 1v1 and not interfere with other fights). The good (or bad) thing about this is that most pilots there are very experienced, so beating them won't be easy as a newbie- but on the other side, all of them were always helpful, so you will have the opportunity to learn from some of the best.
I'd like to apologize for the poor quality of the post above and sincerely hope you didn't waste your time reading it. Yes, I do feel bad about it.

I find enough to do in EVE to keep me interested but if I had known I would never get a kill I never would have started. And no one wants me in a corp now because of my stats...

Anyone having trouble getting solo kills, fit out a Vexor for buffer and burst damage at point blank range, and just go pick fights in lowsec.
You'll lose some, but you will get many wins, including ships much more expensive than yours. https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=346564 - a proposal to overhaul the Logistics skill https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=238931 - an idea for a new form of hybrid PVE/PVP content. www.minerbumping.com - ganking miners and causing chaos |

Pshh, I was dueling people in Couster on day one. Got into nullsec within my first month and never looked back. Flying solo isn't where it's at anyway, huge fleet and gang fights are way more fun. Which happen everyday in nullsec, the solo pvper in nullsec is just a free kill. Recently, I came upon a few months old char mining in a retty in 0.2 space. I could have easily reshipped to fit a scram to my cloaked T3. But no, I decloaked beside the guy, said hi, told him I was no threat, and went about ratting in system. Just the 2 of us in system. We continued chatting, and he eventually called out for some help with some rats attacking his mining boat he could not handle. I zipped over, got rid of them for him.
That gave me far more gratification than ganking the guy. (BTW, look at my killboard's ancient history, there are 0.0 and wh kills on it, of all kinds, so I do know a thing or two about shooting others in the game)
A few days later, we had some clown in a Hurricane scan him down while having an alt sit on the other side of the gate (dead end system). I gave the miner a safe spot I had, but it was a small system and could not keep him safe, while I checked out his way out of system (remember the alt?)
It did not take long before the Cane had him found and pointed. Nothing I could do for him in my outgunned exploration T3. He was extorted for cash, with a promise that the Cane pilot would not kill him for the rest of the day.
That miner has not been back to that system in some time, and rarely logs on now (I have him on WL).
Killing anyone you can is one extremely simple and childish way to play this game. There are myriad other ways,

I am not even 4m SP in yet, and I do group PvP. I almost never even deal damage (I scout ahead, set up bookmarks, etc, etc), but I can listen to the group on TS and learn tactics while my skillpoints grow. Far better than trying to gank a lone miner to PvP |

I got my first solo kill about a week after starting EvE. I was in a belt in a 0.9, ratting, and someone else (who I later saw had only been in the game for less than a day) enters the belt and loots one of my wrecks. He was in a Veletor, and even though it was only a few thousand ISK, as a brand new player, that's a lot of money!
So I blasted him.
Nowadays, I feel absolutely terrible about it. I don't think he logged back in after that (I had him watchlisted for over a year before finally taking him off), and there are times I think I, as a few-days-old newbie myself, may have caused someone to quit.
My second solo kill came almost two years after that, when I saw someone slow-boating in their pod through a bubble-****** gate in nulsec. I took pity on the guy and podded him. It was an empty clone, so I don't know why he didn't just take a pod-x, but I forcefully gave him one so he wouldn't have to boat some 50km in a pod through a bubble. My overview has never been the nicest or cleanest (and I'm too stubborn to use an overview pack), but I'm pretty sure he wasn't blue to me.
...those are actually my only solo kills.
...I'm really bad at PvP. Ransoms are accepted in Isk, Ships, Mods, and Dolls. |
