I'm going to have to give Deus Ex the top spot, personally. Will think of others later.

It's kinda hard to pick the 5 top games ever...ever...ever especially when the monkey island series would fill that up, and if anyone disagrees then all i have to say is "Soon my hankerchief will mop up your blood", anyways back to my contenders for top games
Deus Ex - Gotta agree with Hippo on this, sequel would be a contender for biggest let downs. Monkey Island Series - HAHAHAHA brilliant, nuff said Sam & Max - HAHAHAHA funny and crazy, nuff said EVE:Online - been here 3 years, still going, it's doing something right Syndicate - Amazing game, arm flamer, walk into crowd and burn them all, or persuade 1 billion people then self-destruct killing them all HAHAHA
I think it comesdown to the companies more than anything else, early LucasArts point+click are still the most enjoyable games you can find.
Bullfrog again made some very nice games (Populous and Theme Park), that have inspired a lot of the current crop.
Tis just a shame that a lot of these had sequels that didn't quite live up to the early versions.
Deus Ex: Invisible War, became victim to making a console game then porting it to PC
Monkey 1&2 are the pick of the bunch, the other were a bit of a let down in comparison but are still very good and enjoyable games.
Sam&Max - damn you for cancelling the sequel (i think they knew it would be crap so didnt bother)
I know some people will come out with the common ones, so hopefully my choices for 5 of the top games will cause people to have a bit of a nostalgic think before posting HL2, UT2007, Quake4, F.E.A.R, Oblivion. I have no problem with these but i'd like to see soem older games appear.
It' best i shut =up now coz i love games and i could quite happily fill quite a few pages with me talking bout my fave games.
If you would like to see/hear me talk about my gaming habits in a well constructed program, see if you can persuade the devs to give me my own show on EVE TV =============================================

Syndicate, this was the first game I played that when I started I didn't stop, until late that night, some 18 hours later I was facing attempting the atlantic accelerator mission and wondered why it was dark and why I was close to passing out, and then realised it was dehydration and lack of food.
Street Fighter 2 arcade machine, this just kicked ass, the amounts of people who found friends and nemesis amongst those they had never met before, in an arcade was very high.
Deus Ex was a fantastic game, I couldn't stop playing it, the story the entire concept, I thought it was amazing. I still hope for further development of that line. Probably still my all time favourite.
Half-Life and the mods its spawned, including counterstrike, if anythign stole years of my life it was counterstrike back when it was in beta development and early versions.
Eve-Online, has safely stolen the rest of my life thus far.

A few off the top of my head. FF3 (the States version, think it was FF5 in Japan) was the game that really got me into rpg's. Was a massive game for its time. FF7 ruled, I also enjoyed FF8. FF8 was by no means amazing, and really didn't introduce anything new, but graphics were good, cutscenes looked great, kept me entertained. Shining Force for Genesis-I still pull this out sometimes and play it. The battlefield system actually encouraged you to think strategically. The job promotion system was cool too. Kain was a great villian, and seeing a game where the hero actually died in the end was pretty surprising. I could go on, list other stuff I enjoyed like Mortal Kombat, Metroid, Tekken, Syphon Filter, KotOR, etc., but the ones I listed above are some of the ones that I really loved and influenced my taste in games to come.

My top 5, in no particular order:
-Baldur's Gate 2- I've spent 8 months getting through the first time. It was brilliant in everything: story, (functional) graphics, dialog, sound, gameplay... It's hard to top this game for everything it does. I've literally bought it 3 times now because my cd's get too scratched up.
-Diablo- Love or hate, really, but even though it spawned god-awful clones, it was still very nice to play, just for the sheer addiction factor and mood. I'm not playing this anymore, i've grown tired of it, but in many ways, it was my first love in gaming. Just one more level, just a little bit more gold, just that one quest...
-Colonization- At this point, i'm taking all the civ games into this header - Colonization was just the best of them. Closely followed by Alpha Centauri, but Colonization still tops AC. IT had longetivity, some national pride, a good concept that they adapted from the normal civ, and way better graphics which captured the mood a lot better than civ 1 and 2's greyness, if you know what i mean. It also had the "just 1 more turn" syndrome, of course, but it was a lot worse with this one than it was with Civ or AC.
-Duke Nukem 3D- Untill this day, i have never even finished this game... I just got in, played a few levels untill i got frustrated and started playing around with Build, the editor. Oh god, that was so much fun... You could do insane things with this engine, things you can't even do with current day engines! But that's not the main pojnt. It was just the level of things you could do in this shooter, and it introduced the coolest game character ever made. It simply had that x-factor to go with the actual fun of playing it...
-Scorched Earth- Simple, tanks shooting each other. But, with stuff like mole bombs, funky bombs, nukes, and the terrain was actually deformable! This was actually the precursor to worms, but it still was a lot better than the pink slug fest. So much more settings you could have fun with (rubber walls, anyone?), and on the right (read: slow) computer, you could watch for minutes how your nuke would bounce back and forth untill it nearly missed your opponent, which is sitting right next to you. You can still have serious fun with this game....
Honorable mentions
Morrowind It almost made my top 5, but it didn't. It just felt a little bit too unimmersive at places, and it sometimes showed it's teeth by just letting me know that it wasn't really finished yet.
Daggerfall Same as Morrowind, really, but this one fell through because eventually, it's entire world was the same. I have yet to finish it though, and the storyline is pretty good - but it can't save the rest of the game falling down due to the sheer repetitiveness of it. It was a hell of a lot more immersive than many current day games even, though, and it's still quite playable if you see through the very bad graphics.
EVE Online Why am i not mentioning this one you think? For a good reason: it still has some ways to go before it becomes the perfect game, and right now, there are many small details that add up to a huge letdown, at least for me. EVE is a sandbox, but we only have sand to play with right now - and that's not enough. I'm confident that it will get where everyone wants it to be though, but right now, it's not in my top 5. However, it is the only game which had me playing for more than a year straight, and that *does* count for something.
There's more mentions, but i can't really think of any deserving ones for now.

BTW, those of you living in the UK and haven't had the pleasure of playing the Baldurs Gate or Icewind Dale games, get to your local Game store ASAP as they currently have every BG game + expansion boxset (the DVD versions too) and the same for Icewind Dale - I think the sets are ú10-ú15 each. Also, Diablo 2 + Expansion are going dirt cheap too
I'm waiting for some kind soul to rerelease Planescape Torment on budget so I can finally have the joy of playing it.

Anybody who said Final Fantasy 7 needs to step back and look at the game's battle systems. Sure, it had a great setting, pretty cool characters (minus Cait Sith, who basically just sucked and was probably inserted as a plot device and nothing more) and a decent story (minus the ending which sucked, tbh) and look at the battle-related systems.
The Materia system was really broken. I could beat Emerald Weapon (second hardest fight in the game) by setting the controller down and going to get lunch. Also, nobody had any unique skills (outside of Limit Breaks, which were, admittedly, a step up from Desperation Attacks) which, combined with the single weapon tree (and non-distinctive weapons at that) made the characters in-battle pretty dull and uninspired. Aside from level, every character was pretty much interchangeable.
While FF6 had less perhaps a less cool setting, its battle system was far and above FF7's. (except for the Relics, which got too good, and the M.Block bug) The Espers provide a good realm of customization and utility, while the unique skills, significantly different stat development, and mix of unique and interchangeable weapons make each character fight as differently as they act.
Characterization is just as important in battle as it is in the field, but a balance has to be struck between customizability and structure. FF6 had that balance. (FF7 was too customizable; FF4 was too structured)
TBH, the best part of FF7 was the setting/environment, which was, to be fair, absolutely gorgeous. It also gets points for good use of fun and unique minigames, and probably ties FF6 for best music in an RPG. I wouldn't rate it above FF6, and definitely not above Final Fantasy Tactics, though, to be sure. - - -

Most definetly in order.
1: Eve-Online Just recently making the top spot 'come on the CCP' 2: FFVII Seems you can't have a top anything without this being here, but with good reason. Nigh on perfect game. 3: Streetfighter 2 Turbo I remain the undisputed King, Emperor and High God of Streetfighter. Many have attempted my dethroning. Many have frikin 'died' of shame. You know who you are 'Thomas Welsh' wuuuuhaha 4: CS:S Not much can match taking on 5 terrorists with nothing but your trusty Clarion and a good aim. Then getting banned. 5: Doom 2 The playstation version will for all time have a warm cozy place in the demon hell region of my soul :)
and those that deserve a mention
6: Dune 2 The original and still one of my all time favourite games. Deathhands swarms of fremen and of course the saboteur who just loved to aim himslef at walls instead of their frikin buildings. 7: FFTactics Damn you Garfgarion damn you to hell 8: UT2003 Dont play this one as much these days, but it consumed a year of my life. 9: XCOM Enemy Unknown A classic and has still to be bettered by any of those shady back alley attempts at sequels. 10: Syndicate Guass guns, Flamers, Shields, Miniguns, Shotguns and the Persuadatron. Drive by's have never been so much fun!!!

not in any order...
Knights of the Old Republic (a bit LONG but still one of the best RPG, of course you have to like starwars)
System Shock 2 (PURE atmosphere, yes the half life games are good for setting atmosphere but SS2 does it ALOT better)
Joint Operations (not sure how Battlefield 2 managed to be more popular then this game or why joint ops didnt really become very popular, joint ops in my opinion is far superior)
Elite 2 Frontier (almost too much freedom and planet landing is just too cool, this is what space exploration games are all about)
X-Com Enemy Unknown (a great game, a classic)
btw its hard to choose 5 games only, so many good titles come to mind.

Originally by: Hitomi Ayame Anybody who said Final Fantasy 7 needs to step back and look at the game's battle systems.
It had a story that made me want to play it obsessively to the very end, and for it's time it was absolutely huge in terms of longevity.
Not to mention the fact that it had a ridiculous amount of things you could get do off from the main quests, I think that was what sealed the deal for me tbh.
My list.

Nobody's said Pokemon yet...
I know, I know. But put aside the insane fad. Put aside the off-shoot card game, TV show, lunchbox, whatever. Put aside the dissapointing sequels.
When you only look at the game, and only at the original, Pokemon was and still is a fantastic game. You know you loved it, even if you don't want to admit it.
The premise was simple but fun. The battle system had a plenty of choice, with assembling a party, choosing skills, and using TMs. It was also probably the easiest game to obsess over, and to top it all off was portable! What mre could you ask for?
Other respects go out to
Castelvania: Symphony of the Night (best 2D action/adventure game...beautiful levels, fun gameplay, fantastic music, and sweet extras)
Super Mario Bros. 3 (best 2D platformer...started the trend of "world" in platformers, it was fun, challenging, had plenty of unique and interesting levels; only flaw was a lack of save/password feature)
Street Fighter 2 Super Turbo (best non-preset-combo 2D fighter...before fighting games had preset combos, we had to figure them out on our own...SF2ST was the most tactical fighter of its day, and still is one of the most skill intesive games in the genre)
Armored Core (best giant robot game...featuring a massive slew of parts from which you built your mech down to the core, Armored Core and its offshoots have gameplay as fast as a space shooter with more customizability than any Mech Warrior game, and very solid vs. modes)
Final Fantasy 6 (best 'traditional' Japanese RPG...what can I say? FF6 had an awesome story, great heros [I love you Celes!] a sweet villian [Sephiroth eats Kefka's shorts!] the perfectly balanced battle system [see my earlier post] great music [Terra's theme ftw] and the best looking 2D graphics you'll find anywhere)
Final Fantasy Tactics (best RPG/Strategy...another fantastic Final Fantasy game, FFT had, imo, the best story, and probably the coolest character in FF history, Delita. The job class system, built on FF5's, found perfection in FFT and offered massive customizability with unique jobs giving flavour to story characters. Only flaw was the low difficulty level [I can beat the game using only Ramza, and only saving once] except for a few super hard battles) - - -
The Royal Knights of Khanid are now recruiting!
Step up and serve God and Khanid today!

just all those who still bring good memories.
doom series 1st to bring the lonely soldier against imposible odds, half-life series and their mods (Cs it's a bastard idea from quake action mod based in reservoid dogs wich it's the original idea)
Comand and conquer and warcraft wich bring new life to strategy games. The homeworld saga
on the rpg side Shinning force (love the strategy part), zelda the baldurs gate series.
As special mention.
1) Gauntlet can't understand how anyone dare to not say it !!
2) syndicate/dungeon keeper (both developed by the mythic bullfrog company as long as the awesome populous series, finally merged or become as lionhead studios producers of black and white)
3) monkey island and indiana jones series plus maniac mansion and day of tentacle.
4) Alone in the Dark and in some way ecstatica too.
I'm just old and there is hundreds, just can't remember all but thx to those i spent some of the best time i can remember =) -------------------Sig----------------------- The True Pirate secret |

Civilisation
Elite: Frontier
Lemmings
Mortal Combat
Another world
Every single one of these games changed what i knew games to be, for me.
Civilisation was just ultimately playable over and over again. Something that is lacking in a lot of games. I still play civilisation II now.
Elite: Frontier was the first game I ever played where I could truly go where I wanted, do what I wanted and play forever. Very liberating, and the reason for GTA's success in the future.
Lemmings: who needs to explain that
Mortal combat for taking beat em ups to a new level. Some peeps were a street fighter lot and i'd band them in the same era of change (altho I suckzared at the SF moves whereas I rocked at mortal combat ).
Another world was another of those groundbreaking titles heralding a change in how we looked at games. It took the normal platform game and made it so atmospheric it was untrue, simplifying the graphics in a way as to enhance them. It led to the excellent flashback as well. When i remember the opening scene, of jumping the deadly leaches so as to get to the point where you evade the shadow lion I still smile today. Truly a very involving scene.
Special mention:
Eve online, I love this game but i do have my problems with it. The level to which player skill is important is something that in this game bothers me, and something I believe is actually falling in the game. Interceptors and some of the other ships are something that i think bucks this status quo but a lot of the time the skill is in the setup and not the pilot; or even worse in the ship type / skills / numbers. Dont get me wrong, pilot skill DOES exist and it DOES matter, but i think it should matter more is all (dont shout and / or flame or i'll buy a Britney record).
Soul Kaliber: This was the first beat em up i played where you could deflect an attack, rather than do a deflect- attack. There were probably others, but meh :D. I remember at uni having a fight that got to 36 deflections. The frustration was unbearable as the blunt burn't down :D.
Xcom: the whole series tbh. Loved em.

Originally by: Sarmaul BTW, those of you living in the UK and haven't had the pleasure of playing the Baldurs Gate or Icewind Dale games, get to your local Game store ASAP as they currently have every BG game + expansion boxset (the DVD versions too) and the same for Icewind Dale - I think the sets are ú10-ú15 each. Also, Diablo 2 + Expansion are going dirt cheap too
I'm waiting for some kind soul to rerelease Planescape Torment on budget so I can finally have the joy of playing it.
Can't believe you were the first to mention the BG series! That whole engine line of games was and still is a blast to play.
In the US at least, PS:T is out on budget for about $10, in a dual-cd set (instead of the original 4-cd set). Although it was put out a while ago, even those might have become rare now, not sure. |

Here are my top 5 games
1: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Trully a Masterpeice In my mind the Best Zelda Game to date. Although the ones for SNES and NES where fun also.
2: Half-Life Series Both 1 and 2 and eposide 1, Great Games and long lasting fun, I still from time to time load up any half-life game and play
3: Counter-Strike 1.5 This is how i started online gamming, i used to stay up for hours playing with my clan on the server. Was Alot of Fun, but sadly the Clan i was in went away, i still keep in touch with some of them.
4:F.E.A.R One of the Few Games i've played thats actually manged to scare me (Many times i might add) Playyed most of it in the dark and took often 2-3 hours breaks after only playing 10-30 minutes. freaked me out but fun.
5: Command and Conquer Series Big Fan of these RTS games and always will be, already owned every single game and also bought the 10 year collection. Enjoy them :) _________________________________________________________ Sig In Prograss Club Seals Not Sandwichs |

the original Legend of Zelda on NES, with a shiny Gold Cart and the second quest it was amazign back in its day. summat so old havign 2 entirely different quests on a gaming platform we can run oncell phones is amazing
Zelda 3 on SNES rocks Mario Kart - Any. Super Mario Bros 3, World, 64 all great ground breakign platformers.
i've not really played any amazign games recently, Another Code - Two Memories was interestign on DS cos of the puzzle element but i dont have much time with working to get into really vast games. Would love to go through MEtroid Prime and Elder Scrolls 4 but with work, my 2yr old and eve its ridiculous.

Excluding EVE and other mmo's here's my favourate pre mmo games. (I have no real interest in single player games any more since taking up mmo's about 5 years ago)
In no particular order
1) Team Fortress Classic (TFC). Used to run a clan and competed in various leagues 2) Super Monkey Ball 2. Many an hour playing this game with Monkey Target being the most fun. 3) Any Infocom game. I loved the old Infocom text adventure games (yes kids we didn't have great graphics back in the time of the dinosaurs ) 4) Donkey Kong. Simple by todays standards but when it first came out it was the dogs. 5) Max Payne 2. Developers have realised that it's not just kids that play games. ________________________________________________________ In space no one can hear you scream unless you have voice comms |

1. The Legend Of Zelda: The Ocarina Of Time - Simply legendary. Words can't describe it. 2. No One Lives Forever: The Operative - Gotta love the humour in this game :) 3. Total Annihilation - RTS at it's finest, IMO. 4. Deus Ex - Loved the story and open-endedness. 5. Operation Flashpoint + Resistance expansion - Fantastic game. The astronomical amount of community-made mods and addons make it even better.

So hard to pick just 5.
1: Final Fantasy 3 (technically 6) Its been mentioned in this thread several times for good reason.
2: Pacific Theater of Operations (PTO) SNES game. If you can find a roomate, who can spend 40 hours on one match, this is the game for you. Graphics stink, sounds are horrible. But the game play is there, especially against a human opponent.
3: Gran Turismo, any one of them.
4: Uncharted Waters, New Horizons (SNES) Rare game, used to own it, can't remember what the heck I did with it.
5: Civilization 2. I still play this game, even though I first intalled it on a 486 computer. Anything that is still fun after 10+ years is good game play.
6: Monster rancher. If you can get over the fact that its very much like playing pokemon, its a fun game.
7: Harvest moon (NES 64 version) anouther rare game that I used to own, but have since lost. Its a cross between sim farm, and final fantasy. Or sim-final-farm-fantasy if you will.
8: Wonder boy (sega arcade game) I remember this from holidays way back when. The coffee shop had it in the corner for the longest time. Sadely its gone now. It might not even be a good game, but for sentimental value it gets a mention.
9: Mario Cart. Many sober/drunken nights have been spent playing this game with friends. First one to 99 wins battle mode.
10: Lufia (both SNES games). Perhaps the best two RPG games I have ever played
11: Zelda, a link to the past. Yep enough said.
Ok the last 3, should actually be at the top in terms of favouites of mine.

The funny thing is. I own a whole lot of PS2 games that I rarely play. There some that are really good, but they are few and far between.
But if I had to be stuck with one gaming system forever and ever. It would be the SNES. So many classic games out there. And so many games, that even though the graphic were so bad you sometimes couldn't tell what you were looking at. Or the sounds that were errm... They had game play, and good enough game play that you ignored all that and just played. I still play more SNES on an emulator then I play PS2.
It seems every time I buy a new game, or rent one, after about half an hour of looking at the fancy effects, voice overs and all that candy, I relize the game sucks. Sure there's some exceptions but...
My theroy is. Since SNES games had nothing else going for them. They had to offer good game play

Mario kart such multiplayer fun Total Annihilation *worship* World Cup on the NES, a football game Zidane would have loved (i noticed the characters from this game also made an appearance in the "beat em up" game river city ransom, though i dont know which came first) -civilisation 2 "We scoff at your empty threats!" Kingpin the "bagman" game mode was just such fun
but its so hard to choose...
When i think about it, there have been so many good games in these past 15 years or so. Goldeneye, bomberman, worms, c&c, dune 2, most of the fps games since wolfenstein, tie fighter, contra/turrican, street fighter, zelda, double dragon, star fox, and the list goes on and on.
I like these kinda threads, makes me want to look some of the old classics up again, that i otherwise would have forgotten about. (emulator 4tw? /me googles)

Im going to ignore the 5 rule
Goldeneye/Perfect Dark - awesome console shooters back in the day. So many options and ways to play that even new games can't match. Pretty much set the standard for any FPS on a N64 no less. Plus you can never beat being in the same room with someone while your beating them down. I am surprised and dissapointed they haven't been mentioned yet.
Halo 1+2 - owes much of its credit to the above, but still pretty damn good multiplayer. It might not have had as many options, but it was polished, had unique features, and fun to play with 16 people in one room. Single player was lacking in both games though simply because of storyline and the story in the second one being cut short to make you buy a 360 and the 3rd.
Age of Empires/Mythology - awesome rts series. I just plain enjoyed it far more than warcraft/starcraft or command and conquer. I enjoy having big armies of mixed units far more than small groups of expensive special units. While Civilization isnt exactly the same type of game I would still play AoE long before civilization.
Zelda series - shouldn't need to explain this. its definite given. Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask being my top favourites.
Elder Scrolls - Morrowind was just huge, and I am just getting started on Oblivion. I regret never playing the first. A real love it or hate it series. I consider them the pinnacle of rpgs.
Super Smash Bros 1+2 - Perhaps the two greatest multiplayer games ever invented. So many hours of wasted youth. All with the incredibly unique style only nintendo could come up with.
Mario From mario bros to mario kart. SO many great games.
Diablo 2 Blizzards masterpiece. Why they made warcraft into an mmo and not diablo I will never understand.
FF series Hit or miss on some of them but with some really good ones in the mix such as the first on the old nes and 7 of course.

I found a bug where if you fly with the falcon / kestrel hard enough into the stone wall on the castle, you are transported THROUGH the wall and can collect the panther / leopard / big cat! But then you are trapped I think.
Nothing like running over bogeymen as a rockman in this game.
Awesome someone played it :D. You can collect the cat normally and yes, nothing like squishing the little snotmen :D. I found tons of bugs though. If you fly out far enough as the hawk, the game crashes.
You can use the helmet bug to crawl on the underside the island :D it's acctually only one block high which is solid. On the castle area, you can actually use this to get all the way around the castle and find a secret door on the other side. It's a secret entrance to the castle but I don't think you can get to the king that way without the appropriate keys. Could you collect those from other islands? If you crawl around the top of the castle with the helmet bug, there's another way in with spiders everywhere - it's a secret area with a life in it and I think a key.
The spider. I had no idea how to get this for a very long time, it was quite annoying. In the end, I found that I could cheat and get it by sitting on a litlte stone thing to the right of the inside of the cave, turning into the grasshopper and then jumping full force to the right. That little crawlspace you're meant to use to exit once you have the spider, you end up going through it and getting the spider that way :p. Took me until my fifth time through the game before I found out how to get the bat first ^^;.
If you wiggled carefully left and right (without hitting walls), you could get the swallow through tiny spaces that you were supposed to need the hawk to get through.
Oh, and there was a cool bug. If you collected keys on an island, then saved the game and reloaded, the island would reset but you'd keep the keys. I think you could sue them on other islands.
Man I loved that game...

I'm surprised to see barely any GTA3. It was the top-selling game in whatever year it came out.
Heres my list:
1. Super Metroid - There is not a single problem I have with this game. I honestly can't think of adding anything that would make it better, except maybe more of the game!
2. Starcraft - I'm still fighting the addiction. I want to get back into it so bad, but I know I would get owned by all the Koreans. I want starcraft II though damnit!
3. Descent (I, II, and 3) - if you are a twitch gamer that likes to own your opponents with your quick reactions, fast thinking, and shear will to win, this game is for you. Descent 3 still has great graphics in today's standards. I miss those days playing D2 through Kali on my Mac.
4. Counter-strike - I'm not sure if I liked to play this because of the game, or just the for the competition. I love the competitve aspect of games, in fact I went pro for a short while, and CS is one of the biggest games out there for professional gaming.
5. F-Zero (Original and GX) - If you like driving fast. I can't think of a game that can better portray the feeling of going fast as $%*& than F-Zero. GX is just damn hard game and I love challening games.
Honorable Mentions: GTA-III - It's fun to get in trouble! Ikaruga - Most of you guys probably aren't familiar with this. It's the hardest game EVER for the gamecube. Probably because its a traditional top-down space shooter. MUD's - I've dropped thousands of hours into multi-user text games when I was a teenager. The MUD that I played on was called Aesir. X-Wing/Tie-Fighter games from Lucas Arts - taking on Imperial starcruisers with your little fighter was great!
I didn't put EVE on the list because I've only been playing for a few days. I have a feeling once I get into the meat of the game that I will really enjoy it, though.
