Dear Developers, How do you comment upon the fact that some of Russian players use VERY obscene Russian words in their nicknames? Is this a case worth reporting to you, or we let them go?

This is probably why the petition queue seems endless though. People are soooo sensitive. :/

As mentioned; if the nicknames offends, petition it and the GMs will investigate it.

I think it is more because people often pretend to be offended, where really they don't care at all. Still, if offence is genuine, a petition is the correct course of action.

Should I petition certain system and constellations that are named with rather mmm funny names...?
For example, the system 'Balle' - Swedish slang for the male genitalia. Constellation, '*****kan' - If read '*****-kan', Swedish slang translated into an english word starting on C ending on unt with the added word 'can' (c.unt-can).
Altho I find those two laughable whenever I pass through.

Actually, it's got jack-diddly-squat to do with being offended. Obscenities are not allowed in people's names, whether they offend me or not. ________________________________________________

That was exactly the point (I think). People petition about things they don't even care about just to be a tard and so they can feel 'holy' because they've helped fight a horrendous crime. This is just a signature, not a part of the actual message. |

You know the rules and you know what your chosen name means.
Unless you're not the only one speaking that language, you might run into troubles you could have avoided easily.
The GM care about those rules to keep the game available for young people too. --*=*=*--

It is, however, perfectly possible to unknowingly pick a name that is offensive in a language you do not speak. Maybe the last survivor of a lost tribe in South America may find the name "Tachy" to be an outrage of the highest proportions .. should your character name be changed?

I know the rules quite well, but I definetly don't speak any scandinavian language and the only reason I know is cause someone told me after 18 months of playing him. And so far, noone has ever noticed, beyond that 1 individual. It was a completely made up name, atleast afai knew at the time. Not about to petition my own name cause by some freaky coincedence my name means ass in swedish. Did I already mention that people should STOP CARING!

The rules are there for me too. If the GM working on the petition decides that my name breaks the rule and has to be changed, I'd have no problem with it. It would hurt a bit after using the name for about 20 years in different games.
In games under the hood of SOE and Blizzard, your name would break the rule of 'No trademark allowed'. A friend had to change his name because it was a brandname in India. *shrug* Here it is good for a chuckle seeing you flying under the banner of a moderately priced cosmetic brand. --*=*=*--

If "asnar" is a profanity, would "asen" be it too, who means donkey? (since you get "AS" when cutting of nar?)?
A long time ago, a other EVE gamer got into trouble, since some letters in the middle of the name accidentally were a norwegian words meaning "devil", and who is used about as englishmen use the word "bloody".
Whats more, words who makes sense in norwegian, sounds bad in german, since my language consist of a LOT and LOT of borrowed german words, who is garbeled by hundreds of years.
In some mmo's, the common chat even is cencoring some words who mean i coudnt even use norwegian in private conversations, and even some city names in norway were touched.
I get the problem, i really do. poor GM's.

Except my name has no relation to that cosmetic company, popular though that misconception may be in those with little or no sci-fi culture.

Altho I find those two laughable whenever I pass through.
Did Ivan just edit out an in-game system name for profanity?

that word would be interesting to see. I am norwegian, and the word devil are spelled "djevel" cant say i se anything wrong with that. however if he used the word "jµvel". thats an different story. hehe
i have seen players in this game an other called alot of different names. all from cities to not so good names. lol But usally i just convo the player, and have an chat about his name, just to let him know the meaning in other language. usally it always end in some nice convo's. with lots of lol and rofl's included. hehe
i did eve hear about an car from fiat some years ago. The car company did call the new car "*****". they had to remove it because the name are norwegian for an certain female part. It were all over the newspapers here. kinda funny :) but it didnt go long before they changed the name.
When we have so many language in eve and other mmorpg's. we are bound to get some name crashes. Some gets offened, some dont.
If the name offend you, you should report it. if not add him to your adress book and have an laugh evry time he logs on :)
Btw in my corp there are another player who has the same name as an small city part were i come from. kinda cool :) gives me an smile when he logs on. reminds me on my young days.. lol

Edited by: Caleb Paine on 07/08/2006 13:32:15 It all depends tbh, if someone clearly shows to have the mind of a 13 yearold using a name which on purpose is pure profanity, I'll report him. If it's on the edge I have no problems with it... the thing is, people who understand humor know where the line is, people who don't and just try too had go WAY beyond what's acceptable.
Saw a corp ticker NEGER, Dutch for n*i*g*g*e*r*, corp description was 'Negers in space', the CEO's info had something with 'Neger' in it too... and yes, it was a Dutch guy. That's pushing it, I reported it and it got changed.
Was I offended? No not really, but idiots like that should learn where the boundaries are.

No, he did filter out an attempt to avoid the profanity filter. I hope we're not discussing moderation, or that discussing is considered bad language.
@Gariuys: Tachy is widely related to the Greek word for speed. Seed: yes, a bit. It is still missing a lot, but the RP is fantastic. Gypsy Kings: They still exist? They must be old these days. No, I am not a fan of them.
@Avon: Boats and tires? Didn't know about those. Good to know. A neighbour sold the beauty products, and she always gave some teasers to my parents. --*=*=*--

Interesting name Avon.
Its the Celtic word for river, when the Romans invaded England, and asked the locals what the local river was called most said Avon. Hence allot of rivers in the UK are called Avon from those census. It is also a sin about uncontrollable emotions/lust under Halakhah (a collective of Jewish religous laws). Its also the name of a charcter from blakes 7.
Language is a wonderfull thing and its often the cause of many conflicts as people put their own interpretations into it, if something is meant to cause offensive it is usually painfully obvious from the offended person, but can be completely innocent misinterpretation.
