Ok so an ISSN Machariel owned by pilot æXÆ jumps through a 0.0 gate into System æZÆ and gets promptly locked down (i.e. scrambled) by a Muninn, Ishtar, Armageddon, Scorpion.
Not a huge amount of firepower there but he IS going to die, or at least....he should.
See, the pilot in question logs off just prior to getting shot up and as such, his ship just disappears, no 15 minute grace period where he should have been pounded into rubble, nothing, nadda, ziltch.
What does the guy do now? he repeatedly logs in and out to create an impromptu safespot. And the best thing about all of this? its apparently perfectly æokÆ...
...what is the point to this....
Quote: The PvP timer is split into three 15-minute periods. Whenever you are engaged in a player vs. player fight, the first timer starts. It is refreshed whenever that anything happens in combat, including when you get fired upon (even if you do not fire back). If you log off within 15 minutes of this timer's activation, the other two will kick into action. Note that your onscreen timer countdown may not take into account events that cause the timer to get refreshed. The second timer starts once you log off. Your ship will be warped to a random part of space and will remain there for another 15 minutes. Note that if the enemy has warp scrambling abilities, he can keep you in place for those 15 minutes and fire at you all the while. The phrase "sitting duck" comes to mind. If your ship gets destroyed, the third and last 15 minute timer will start. This time, it's your pod that does the emergency warp and remains in space for the duration of the timer.
....If such lame work-arounds can be exploited to avoid the PvP timer?
I hope a Dev reads this, if so please fix it. We had the 15 minute timer introduced precisely because of this nonsense, if itÆs broken it NEEDS looking at again.

Well, on the other hand, if the function was removed, the amount of reimbursement-petitions would increase tenfold.
Ever got disconnected by accident? (eg. ISP-problems, or just pressing CTRL+Q (quit), instead of CTRL+A (select all)).
Would you like to lose your ship because of that?

I'm going to pre-empt any 'lame gate campers' nonsense from any empire dwellers who have never set foot in 0.0.
This guy screwed up, if you jump blind into a 0.0 system you are rolling a dice that is a fact of existence out in lawless space.
Your options if you come up unlucky:
1/ Fight your way out - destroy the tacklers and leave, or, if youÆre that dammed good, kill them all.
2/ Tank until help arrives - in most situations it just isnÆt going to happen
3/ Go 'Full Burn' back to the gate without returning fire - Blasterthron in a sticky situation basically, jump through leaving your aggressors behind then get away from the other side of the gate fast.
4/ Put your head between your legs and kiss your ass goodbye - yup you screwed up and now you're going to die, that's life in New Eden...
Or you could just exploit faulty game mechanics giving you a 'get out of jail free' card....

What if you decloaked to engage, got attacked, and then got disconnected by your ISP? In that case you'd have the pvp timer and you'd die. ISP problems, or stupidity, is not an excuse however much it sucks to die because of it.
The pvp timer was introduced to stop this sort of behaviour, which it has clearly failed to do. It needs looking at.

and as someone allready mentioned earlier also fix bubbles/dictorspheres NOT breaking the emergency warp.
and while at it also fix dictorspheres/bubbles NOT working when someone has triggered warp allready and is aligning happily for ages inside the bubble. c'mon... it's the same annoying gamemechanics warp jamming modules had after launch.
this kind of crap happens way to often. that mach pilot would have had a high chance of just mwding back to the gate, jumping through and warping off while the others have to wait for aggression to wear off. and i highly doubt anyone would have been as ****ed if this happened compared to broken gamemechanics ruining the fun.

I have, repeatedly, to L4 missions (disconnects, ctds). I haven't had this foreign '45 second logoff' of which you speak ever save a ship. As far as I'm concerned, it only works for people trying to escape pvp...

noone is asking for the function to be removed. just to be fixed. simply make it so the agression does NOT have to be before logging off but before warping out/disapearing. pretty simple fix, not much to touch.... but the devs are prolly all carebears or just dont care or whatever...

Heh. The devs are definitely not 'all carebears'.
Why they dont change the obvious flaws are a mystery but they dont and have consistantly refused to change things when players demand it despite massive whinings since the beginning of the EvE universe.
Maybe they have some sort of policy to do with ad hoc changes or something. Pendantics?

It's annoying as hell. The other day we had something similar, a Black Flag Alliance member jumped a Raven through a gate blind as we were approaching it. He logged off, so we waited on the other side of the gate till he logged back on - and caught the lame loser. That was a very sweet kill, as his second attempt to log off failed miserably.

Yup, for example freighters are invincible in 0.0 except to a HUGE gatecamp that could fry it within the 1 minute (which would show up on the map).
I know people who fly freighters through 0.0 without scouts because there's no need for them. Just jump, have a look while cloaked, and log safely if there's a camp waiting.

I have had isp issues that caused me to get nailed in PvP and honestly this does not bother me, at least with regard to CCP, my isp now that's another story.
CCP should not have to re-emburse due to connectivity issues from your isp.
As for PvP timers yes "log outs" are annoying especially in interditer bubbles, what's the point in pulling some one out of warp if they just log due to no aggro, maybe a tweak to make the bubble cause aggro if it pulls some one out?
Additionaly if it doesn't allready a scram/web should also cause aggro.
And I have noticed on several occasions that even if your PvP timers have counted down and no longer showing occasionaly stations will still gank you, i've lost three incursus due to this.

If you can't kill an scrambled BS with 4 ships (2 of which are BS) in 45 seconds, you really dont DESERVE the kill... I've seen some pretty useless camps in my time, and most of them are crap because the tacklers dont tackle fast enough.

Not that this is the point, but we didn't kill it because a falcon from a completely seperate corp uncloaked after we started fighting and jammed the geddon (i.e. main damage dealer) constantly. This is just being used as an example because it's how we learned about this exploit of game mechanics. Imagine it was a semi decent camp with multiple bubbles, and a few damage dealing battleships, and a freighter jumped in - you'd be lucky to kill that in time too if he just logged off with the amount of structure they have. Please don't derail the thread with comments like this.

He had been there for 30 minutes before 6 hostile "Blood of the Innocents" came into system. 5 minutes later they brought in a covert ops pilot and he decided to log before they were able to find him. He had a cloak device on and was cloaked when he logged.

For some reason, if you're not agressed when you log, the PvP timer won't kick in when you are logged off and getting shot at / scrambled / etc.
That Mach should've been there for the full 15 minutes and dead. He could've probably just MWDed to the gate and jumped out if he had any kind of decent setup on that thing :)
Petition it btw, it can be seen as "using game mechanics in an inappropriate way to get an advantage", although the GM response will probably be: "People can log whenever they feel like". ------------------------------------------ A lapdance is always better when the exotic dancer is crying.. |

Oh ok I see, it's all clear now, he logged off while cloaked to... Oh yes, avoid 'being found' by a covert ops ship, right......I get it now...
I quite frankly don't give a monkey's what the explanation is for the lameness involved, the fact of the matter is a ship appeared 15km from a gate, was warp scrambled and disappeared, and the same tactic is being used time and again, to make ships with large amounts of hitpoints nigh on invulnerable to all but large fleets by exploiting a flaw in the PvP timer - THAT is the crux of the matter.

There is a FLAW here that allows a work around of the 15 minute PvP timer.

For anybody who doesn't think this issue is a problem...you're wrong. It makes capitol ships nearly unkillable, particularly freighters.
The solution is to have aggro timer take affect if the ship is aggro'd at any time before it disappears. Supposedly CCP will add this in one of the fabled patches.

Edited by: Bhaal on 21/08/2006 19:25:21 Someone in this thread seems to be lying, quite possibly the OP IMO...
In any event, I'm not sure there is much CCP can do. Many of the CTD's or "stuck lag" I have are when I hit the "Jump" button on a gate. CCP may well know that a large percentage of crashes occur with this action, and this would mean an assload more reimbursement petitions for them...
As I stated in another thread, you have to abolish logging off along with log on traps by making ships NEVER disappear from space.

Logon traps are just as ghey as logging off... And something tells me the whiners in this thread would not hesitate to logon to gank someone, but will whine their head off for losing a kill to a logger...

Eve is all about playing hardcore and winning, so what do you think 99.998% of people would do if they were flying a faction battleship?
If something is implemented in eve that gives one an advantage, it will be exploited to its fullest potential, therefore, in this case, it must be removed.

It is, Count tassesine or whatever his name is logged on my corp a while back while he was cloaked, and they do dissapear very quickly. Timer should start when you fire at them even after they have logged.
That works for me. PvP only, though. Disconnects in PvE should be more forgiving.
And I don't get why logging from a dictor bubble isn't considered an exploit tbh.

I can assure you the OP isn't lying. Lord Spidey maybe onto something with the name he mentioned btw .
I can also assure you that we're not the type to exploit logon traps either - I play this game for fun, and sitting on TS waiting for a corpmate to tell us all to log on to gank someone isn't my idea of fun.
I know what you are saying about the crashing while jumping thing, IMO losing a ship occasionally to this is worth not having people log off in combat intentionally.

What do you expect?
You think youÆre the first braniac to point this out to CCP?
You came here balling because you, the all important Gabriel Karade fell "victim" to a pilot who may or may not have logged out on you if you believe the story...
As if CCP needs to fix this for your killboard stats... And to make YOU happy...
OBVIOUSLY CCP sees more harm in changing the logoff timer right now than any good that can come of it, like making whiners like you happy.
There are many more ppl CTD'ing and getting stuck after jumping than ppl like you crying about losing a kill...

If you assert something back it up, it's quite simple. If you're going to attack someone's character you had better have good reason to...
The pilot's name is now in this thread, his previous actions also noted. Do you really believe someone would log off to avoid being detected by a covert ops while cloaked?

But this is all beside the point, my Corp mates told me this would just degenerate into a flame fest over this one incident, when the point was about highlighting a flaw that WE genuinely did not know existed.
Well now you know.
The flaw exists, and PvP'ers have been dealing with it for quite a while now.
Next time use the search in the top right corner for "pvp timer" and you can read many threads *****ing about this problem.
And why should I take your word over that ISS guys word when you come to the board with a childish, stomp your feet and scream attitude?

"This guy screwed up, if you jump blind into a 0.0 system you are rolling a dice that is a fact of existence out in lawless space.
Or you could just exploit faulty game mechanics giving you a 'get out of jail free' card...."
I am curious how exactly do you not jump into a system blind? Some kinda ingame feature i am unaware of or you got a leet cheat? or you use some lame alt to check if it is clear......
Sorry gate campers are lame, and the only reason people do it is because it is REDICULOUSLY safe and effective way to shoot fish in a barrel and call it pvp.
I wish CCP would have been much smarter about the entire warp and combat mechanics, scramblers are such total BS and it just leads ot safe gate camping. Should be a mechanic that while in combat warping gets severely slowed. I mean you suggest kill the tackler but you can;t, because they just warp out if your gonna get them, and you can;t stop them. EvE pvp has turned into a joke that is blobing, big or small same crap though. 3+ guys pwning 1 guy coming through a gate in a ship, if he brings friends? run away to your own SS, or get even more people!
Way to safe and to big of an advantage to gate campers right now. Sitting at a gate camping should be VERY risky, and it isnt that is wrong.

Address book, local... You name it.
There are "exploits" on both sides of the isle, and CCP already knows this...
Kali, we'll see changes to local, and hopfully for the better...
Maybe down the line, we'll see a solution for insta's, logging, loggin traps, etc...

Also very true, and the OP coming here going "waa waa, I didnt get a faction BS killmail, sploit sploit SPLOIT I tell you" is equally lame. This game is full of dodgy mechanics, from people possibly avoiding inevitable death by logging to people putting others in their addressbook so you can track their logins from across the galaxy ... its the way the game is, and helping your epeen is no doubt low on the developers list of priorities |

Edited by: Heraklitus Nomidzon on 21/08/2006 23:31:12 I agree--I find this loophole infuriating.
Late last year my old corp Battle Angels along with the Triad staged a very organized, well planned out strike against a freighter convey. We jumped, crossed over a whole system, jumped again, had it all time just right so we would arrive at a gate right when two freighters did. They both came through along with their BS support into our fleet. We scrambled both freighters, then annihilated their BS support, and found, much to our surprise, that the freighters were gone.
They logged their freighters mid-jump to save them. It was impossible for us to destroy them despite our attempt which was, If I say so myself, brilliantly executed by our fleet commnander.
I was stunned. . .absolutely stunned when I was told it wasn't an exploit.
The solution seems to me obvious, and it's what everyone has already suggested: have the PvP timer start when a ship is aggressed, even if the player has already logged off.
It should also be reset every time a ship is newly aggressed. In other words, if you have a logged off capital ship on your hands, you have as much time as you need so long as you continue to activate your modules on it.

Nanobotter: Corp mates, Alliance security channels, map tools, scouts. When solo if you use the tools at your disposal you have to be really unlucky, generally by bumping into a hostile fleet that is on the move. Personally I rarely gate camp, it's really dull and going off solo is much more interesting, but then gate camping is very necessary strategy for all alliances.
Radioactive Babe: If you want to interpret it as "waa waa" then be my guest. The example was used to highlight an ongoing issue. IÆm not sure how using the address book comes under ælameÆ but each to their own I suppose.

NO! you all have it wrong!
what we need is a big red and whie life saver button that we can click at any time and it means no one can attack us or hurt our ships. then we can go about mining and hauling without having to worry about the silly people trying to pew pew us.
in fact they should make a new game called EVE Online PVP edition which is where pvp'ers can go... and leave all the carebears on the current game...
Why should i even undock if there's a chance someone could blow my ship up? :(
