As a new EVE player, I have been reading about the EiB scam with interest. But reading the above story was in another league entirely. Even though I have never heard of the GHSC before - reading this well written story, makes me want to jump in and play EVE right away. "Well played", is all I can say.
More forum links to the GHSC story would be appreciated, in order to make the daily server downtime pass a little quicker...

To be honest, there is no contest here as far as I'm concerned. GH-SC wins by a mile, landslide and hands-down.
Why?
Simple. GH-SC had class.
It was brutal, it was nasty but it had class. I love when things are done with class.

oh and yeah if there is ever a real hollywood movie about eve, the ghsc storyline wouldnt be bad

The EIB scam/embezzlement is by far the most damaging in terms of money taken, and hats off to Rast for not hiding behind alts, owning up that he dunnit and apparently getting ready to spend his moola in interesting ways. However, he basically scammed isk off a bunch of naive people who ignored the warnings because they didn't want to believe.
GHSC, on the other hand is the stuff of true legend. An assassin biding his time for a year, infiltrating the highest ranks of the marks organization, the masterstroke of the betrayal. Got all the elements of a great movie. What they did was so perfectly executed, so... cold, that it elevates itself beyond a petty scheme and into the halls of prime fiction for the Eve universe.
Rast's scheme will generate a lot of press. People who don't play Eve will go "Wow, he can do that in a video game?" in amazement at the value of the haul. The GHSC assasination, however, will go down as a masterpiece of gaming. ISK value has noting to do with the class and mastery of infiltration displayed.

The GHSC heist was what got me into playing EVE. Before I got my trial, I spent ages reading the thread and found it absolutely mindblowing that it was possible to do something so precise as this within a game, using the game mechanics. It was of Goodfellas proportions.
EIB in comparison, even though it was a lot of money, was just a scam. It was just someone cheating a bunch of people out of their ISK - not something that would make me want to play. Plus the person who did it brought real-life issues into it and spread rumours about himself, including one that he had died and made quite a few people feel bad. It's just not cool to do that IMHO.

EIB scam is just a cheap confidence act. It's like any pyramid scheme or diet pill you see on TV. Fake testimonials and all.
The really sad thing is that he, or a real banker, could of made a lot more ISK in the long run by operating a legit bank. Now that this has happened, no one will ever trust another player owned bank.

Yeah,I have to say,GHSC wins hands-down, no comparison whatsoever. As everyone has stated before, it boils down to class and intent. Their operation was by far the slicker, and whereas the EIB nonsense essentially involved taking some modest sums from a whole lot of different people, the GHSC successfully crippled a corp. Not to say that corp was or is beyond repair, but they faced a far more serious setback than any individual player who happened to have set a side some cash in the EIB as a nice little side investment.
GHSC's was by far the more daring, well-executed, and damaging of the two.

EIB isn't over yet. It remains to be seen what the future holds for it but the current owners are touting it as a going concern.
For me the 'greatness' of EIB depends on when it became a scam. Cally has claimed that it didn't start out that way in which case I'd be less impressed. If it started out legitimate and if it is now continuing legitimately then all Cally has done is steal some money.
People might suffer from that but it isn't a scam in my books. Just embezzlement.
Edit:Oh and the bit about bringing RL stuff into the game was tacky.

I've still yet to see any real proof that the final amount scammed was anywhere close to the continually expanding figure - out to 900 billion in the most recent revision - that has been touted by the perpetrator and pundits alike.

Assuming that it's not fiction, which it could be, I disagree. The Nightfreeze scam just involved using lots of alots, and lots of morons.
The GHSC hit (which Istvaan always gets the credit for, and nobody ever mentions the operatives who spent the year infiltrating) wasn't done through alts, or anomaously. People knew who they were, and they were truly conned in a way that few, if any, have repeated.

Im not interested in being in a magazine, or being remembered for what I did because in 6 months time you will hopefully have forgotten all about this and I can do it again

GHSC assassination was some kind of art, although I don't want to be the victim, because it must have been really cruel for the victim. At least a great story, if you aren't the victim.
The EIB was 'cheap'. If the 700bil is true, it's only shocking that so many people gave him that much. I don't applaud the scammer and don't feel with the victims.
I think scamming should be possible, but the risk-vs-reward is totally out of proportion in the EIB scam, no accountability and a chance that the scammer just tries to make real money with it. The most negative example for a scam. I wouldn't care, if CCP had removed/detroyed 90% of his isk to bring it back into proportion again.

I think it caused more of an uproar (I was in uproar too despite it having nothing to do with me  ) and struck fear in the hearts of many because it could happen to anyone. Whereas the scam depended on people giving up their money in the first place.
The heist was harder to do and handled with more style imo.

thank god theres more honest, normal people out there than him.
in the end, he'll have a braggin right, a " ya remeber that guy that embezzled ISK in EVE, that was me" kinda guy, but really, just proves to me that if he has to do this in order to feel self gratification, then I almost feel sorry for him, locked in the depression of his sad life, with only a videogame for solace.

Since we are taking wild guesses at who is behind certain character in EVE I will hazard a guess that the majority of those who have made personal attacks on me (hello Ferossa!!) are 35-40 years old, still living with their parents, have only ever had sex with their hand or a blow up sheep, have all the star wars figures in their original packaging, love star trek, collects comic books, and grow weed to supplement their dole payments each week.
