Being podded is nothing compared to being looted, IMHO. --------- In the blindness, a streak fiery thread violently cuts the horizon. Bleeding golden mists, engulfing the blindness from within. Burning the darkness. The touch of dawn. |

But it's an evasive little cherry! Catching the pod is often the greatest challenge of the gank.
Oh, and in answer, if your clone isn't up to date you lose your skill point total minus clone point value up to 10% of your total skill point count, I beleive it is. Never been podded with an out of date clone, so I'm not sure. I just know pods make a wicked awesome squish sound

Podded, not podded, makes no difference once the ship is lost.
It's just a minor irritant if you're the podee, if you're the podder you can get your jollies off. Some folks will collect anything, plus the corpses add a certain "atmosphere" to the living quarters.

Um... depending on how old a character you are, youd have to spend 15 mil or so on a new clone, plus the cost of any implants you had in.
And maybe you forgot to move your clone out of the butt end of curse space, so you find yourself stuck there with no ship in hostile territory and have make your way back in a shuttle.

Doesn't this fall under the "Don't fly what you can't afford to lose" concept? I fail to see why implants should be treated any differently. If you follow that rule it is "just a minor irritant". The initial ? was posed to ask "why". They do it for the corpse, simple as that. [ I know no one in EVE would do it simply to be mean spirited ] Since as of this moment you don't get to strip the implants, there is no financial incentive to pod. I suppose one could ransom the pod though... Once you can strip the corpse everyone will pod as common practice.
Once you lose the ship you're pretty much at the perps mercy. Makes no difference. Ship loss, ransom, podding, it's all just game play. Might be different if you were blocked from the game for 48 hours after you got podded 9ie - you died) As it is now there are no worries as long as your clone is up to date. Might even be helpful if you're far from home. I've asked to be podded. I refuse to cave in to EVE paranoia.
As for the hundreds of millions in implants, I'd say don't fly what you can't afford to lose. I don't have hundreds of millions of implants, just a few million. Most of the folks I know who HAVE that amount in implants have billions of ISK. In 0.0, 100 million is what, a couple hours work? By the time you can spend that on implants you're hip deep in ships anyway.

I was already wondering why noone mentioned that...
There are only three real reasons to pod-kill someone:
1. Revenge 2. Griefing 3. Ransoming
No.2 is the reason for 99% of all pod-kills. Revenge is the only noble reason to pod-kill someone, however, very, very rarely executed. Ransoming is to tedious for PKs, and something only professional pirats are doing.

If you are in a declared war with somebody, killing their pod is just kinda understood. If they have a bounty, you need to kill the pod to collect it. It's the only REAL way to totally eject the player from the local system and your controlled space in 0.0 They count for points on the killboards I've used.
And they can be a good challenge sometimes, the little buggers can be tough to lock down.

I once caught someone at a safe, and they were VERY rude when I ransomed their pod. I sat there with them yelling **** at me for half an hour (scanning constantly, of course), and then finally got fed up enough to tell him he had a self-destruct button.
As soon as he pressed it, I killed him.
