As a relative newcomer, I'd like to get a sense of what ships are make the best "lone wolves" in the PvP arena. If you can, describe briefly why you think your choices are the best.
I'm not trying to start a flame war or anything; I just want to learn more about the PvP aspect of the game from more experienced players, so...
Have at it

I made a post about this a while ago.. asking people to mention ships they prefered for solo & small group pvp. Then I went through the pages and counted the number of times the ships was mentioned.
All the top 5 ships was gallente.
The Vagabond is probably the best for solo pvp though, since you can hit & run with it without getting blobbed to death. Its just that fast. But these days, the cost of them are approaching 300 million so only the very rich, or the ones with the blueprints, are using them.

Don't think anything below Capital ships can kill a properly fitted/captained Dominix - if it is 1 on 1. And it is only about 60 mil.

Honestly, gallente ships are absolutely deadly at point blank range, and from my experience, that is what most small gang/solo combat is

No, Raven is a excellent small group pvp ship. It can tank better than almost anyone else and still deliver dps only beaten by megathron or armageddon. I posted a chart yesterday showing the effects of the 2 invuln + EM hardener shield tank... conclusion is that its very hard to break using dps only. Nos ftw I guess, but raven usually have 2 of his own.
Of course you dont even need to tank if you use ecm.

Colorful and creative. It makes me laugh. But, I doubt the contrast is that skewed.
My point is that role for the Raven doesn't warrant the OMG Caldari are over powered and the win button. I see to many whine threads about caldari and I don't really see where the Caldari ships are the top in any class to the point that all other ships are obsolete. Maybe Stealth Bomber?!?
BS for example: Raven not best PVP BS and all ships can use EW so Scorp turns into weakest BS in game. So the 2 weakest flagships in game are Caldari.
We don't have the best BC's, HAC's, AF's, or Hauler's.
Maybe you can argue SB, Inty, Miner(Osprey). I also argue that Caldari are the easiest in the early game for newer players. But that doesn't mean anything for 0.0 vets.
Gallente really appear to be the win button at the moment even though most players are Caldari.

Best Solo PvP Ships ingame atm are in my opinion:
1) Vagabound
It has the Damage and Speed to kill quick and escape even from a good organised hostile Gang. Only a Bubble, multiple webs and Scrambs and a damage dealer can bring it down. It will gank your enemies and your wallet in no time.
2) Pilgrim
Dont we all love the Nos/Ecm/Drone combo of doom? Add a Covert Cloak and your enemy will not even have time to spell "wtfpwned?" in local. Best used as belt ganker with two Scramblers, damn stabs.
3) Ishtar/Dominix
No Cloak but even more Pwnage because of multiple waves of Heavy Drones. These things hurt! Dont get outblobbed. Good as roaming vehicles and gatecampers. Can fight multiple hostiles at once if done right.

Everytime someone mentions that such and such a ship is crap I meet someone fully capable of kicking ass in one.
It all depends on the situation opposition etc etc and even more importantly the fitting people are using.
There is only one answer to this question. The best ship to pvp in is the one you have fun flying in. With the fitting you like. (Cheapness is good though )
The only ship I have come across that can seriously struggle in solo pvp is the retribution and I saw one guy who had got round this inability to fit a scrammer by bumping the heck out of people.
I have met maller's with autocannons and uber tanks. Moa's with blasters and Nos (Element of surprise or what!) Ravens with Neuts and Torp Launchers going up close and personal with Blasterthrons.
I guess what I am trying to say is that there is no substitute for fitting up a ship you like the look of and then testing it on a corpmate. And for learning what your corpmates setups are etc and trying to counter them etc etc.
Plus if you can get a ship to work that the common player thinks is sucky you are likely to be able to get cheap deals on it... :)
Also surprise can be your best ally in a fight. No'one expects a Exequeror to suddenly turn on em with a vast supply of boost charges and drones and their fancy AF to get Nos'd and droned to death... :)
Dont get me wrong however, gather as many opinions and setups as possible. Just when all is done filter em assimilate em and apply what they have said to your setups.
And always tweak. Occasionally tweaking fails hilariously but you learn more from being popped than popping someone.
(Sorry for not actually answering the question!)

I don't think one could list the "top" ships for solo PvP, as it depends on your budget, style and skills. But my current favourite ones are:
Ishkur - This is what AFs are meant to be. With the majority of your damage output in drones you can come up with all kinds of fun fits for this baby.
Brutix - The best PvP BC hands down. In gank mode it can rival the DPS of most battleships, or fit a powerful tank for short term fights.
Thorax - The classic solopwnmobile cruiser. Fit the way most people try and it's a sub-par Vexor. Fit correctly, it's as evil as it ever was.
All Gallente. As a dedicated EVE soloist, I can tell you they are the race built for soloing. Lots of mids, heavy and fast damage, powerful unsustainable tanks and MWD for getting in and out.

Sweet jesus, that is the worst rationalization ever. Getting a bonus to the most effective type of warfare does make the Scorpion the single most effective gang BS around, followed by the Javelin Raven as the king of damage dealers for skirmish-sized engagements (along with the versatility for a tank or EW). Not only does the Raven outperform in raw damage dealt during an actual fight (huge volley damage in addition to at least two free volleys in comparison to any shortrange turret BS), it also gets to choose the perfect type most drastically of any BS - even the notorious Dominix can only pick two heavy drones, two mediums and one light drone set. All the while the Raven gets these goodies while maintaining full alignment and doing plenty of damage to cruisers.
Speaking of the Dominix, it's badly overrated. Badly limited range and manueverability, limited damage output letting decent tanks hold until the injectors run out and all that. It's still the easiest battleship to solo (and has great versatility for alternate setups), but being in a class that doesn't really solo well against anything but itself that doesn't mean too much.
Anyway, Damp Raven > Domi. Damp or ECM Raven + tackler = dead Domi. The advent of EC-300/600s in general has made Domis quite beatable by almost anyone really.
As for actual soloing ships ? Most T2 cruisers can be molded into something pretty sweet for solowork. Caldari do have it roughest in that department for pure soloing, but they make up for it by being the best without even remote competition in small and large gangs.

there are so many good 1v1 PvP ships out there atm, the game is realy quite well balanced in that respect, sure there are a few donkeys in amongst them all but the vast majority are cool, all suiting different situations, here are a few
rifter/punisher, the 2 best frigs for solo atm, i would say the rifter has the slight edge with better skills, but there realy isnt that much between them
rupture/thorax, again too close to call between these 2 fantastic t1 cruisers, as far as bang for buck goes, these ships are probably the best ingame
BS, most BS can do 1v1 in some fasion, ships with 5 med slots or more do seem to have a slight advantage over the ships with lesser med slots, but dont underestimate andything when it comes to BS class ships, they can all perform well in certain situations, but the ships that cover the most situations are domi/raven/scorp/tempest with the phoon and mega and arma in the next class
T2 ships, all these babys have intended roles, vagabonds are ultimatly king of solo PvP atm just because of their control factor, you can get in and get out when needed, you have great resists to your sheilds which free`s up your low slots for damage mods (ehem stabs ) frig sized t2 stuff is fairly well balanced, enyo is a great little 1v1 and so is the jag since its make over, hawk/harpy are decent too
thats about all i can be arsed to type, much more variety in the game tbh and alot fo ship you cn make effective, it all about knowlege of ships and modules, get an idea of what you want in a ship and figure out your own setups, some might stink no doubt but you never know when you come across a setup that works for you

Well its snake implants and WCS that make these ships uber-'lone wolfs', why? Cause you need a whole fleet to just catch one, so they are excellent to kill NPCers/miners and then run away from any trouble..
BTW I disagree with domi/ishtar/pilgrim, they may be the kings of "1 vs 1" but "1 vs many" the above ships will kill the weak ships (tacklers) in your gang with ease and then run away from the heavy ones.

well ... the game is quite balanced you can use a cheap wolf af or an ishkur for going solo , or going for a very exp. ship like an hac (ishtar , vagabond on top) or just gank ratters with pilgrim (one of the few amar ships that can solo pwn) or jump in a blaster megatron ... the best ships are gal/min for going solo , but if you can join a small gang (2/3ppl) amar and caldari are ok!

Holy lord, Raven in theroy is highest DPS maybe, but if the ship is killed before the torps ever get there then it is no good. Thats the point here. Again for Scorp, number theroy and bonus looks good on paper but since it is the weakest BS and always called primary it does little good. plus EWar is so jacked that enough multispecs in any ship is overpowered.

Where is the logic behind this? It's like saying the most expensive HACs would be the best, in that case the Cerberus. Look at the Dom: It's great for solo PvP and to a lesser extend in small groups but it's not an option in fleetbattles.
No doubt Gallente got the best Cruisers there is, they lack in the Frig department, tho. With the Dominix they got a very good BS, after ECM and NOS nerf it will be avarge like the Mega, tho. Caldari and Minmatar have good Frigs and appart from Raven ok BS. Amarr got some graet ships, too. Tho, I must admit they lack diversity and imagination, so they're the least used in solo PvP.
In the end, I must say: Who the hell flies solo anyway? Somehow I always meet my enemys in groups. Don't speak english, just F5, F5, F5... |

I'm not sure why people say the Raven can't tank very well. It most certainly can for short periods of time, in much the same way that a dual LAR tank only lasts as long as the cap does.
If you go putting tackling gear or EW in your mids then of course the tank sucks, but fit properly it's pretty powerful. Even the great Farjung lost a Megathron to a solo Raven in his first video.
