Having said all that, I was NOT getting these constant CTD before the last patch...the EVE client HAS to be involved somewhere and I for one would still like some Dev input here
I think this is the key point really. You may have some luck by messing about with your RAM, but in reality you should not have to unless it is faulty. Your computer is designed to use this RAM configuration so if one game has a problem then it is the game at fault not the hardware.
These CTDs on Jumping and Undocking must be related to some process or code which changed in the last patch.
I do not get problems with the other games I am currently playing: Oblivion, Call of Juarez, Half Life2, Settlers 2 10th aniversary.
I will continue on my debug process and have already submitted a bug report.

Guys have any of you done what I suggested about using the log server in your eve folder. It has completely stopped all my CTD!!

lo all, I'm sorry but I have to throw a the wild card out on this one.....
I am having all the problems of the random CTD as many other people have posted, however I am running a p2 2.6 with 1 gig ram (one stick) at 133mhz fsb (proc and ram). vid card is nvidia 6200 with 256ram. so as you can see my system isnt state of the art, but is still very capable. and still, I am having CTDs dispite all my best efforts.....
video card tweaks, game tweaks, fresh installs, both of windows and the game, both patched and full to current version, XP tweaks, connection tweaks, memory tweaks, sound and no sound, graphics full to minimal, windowed and full mode, driver updates, driver rollbacks (!)...... did I miss anything? oh well if I did I probably tried it and just forgot to put it here.
NOTHING is stopping it. nothing. some things help, sometimes I can get several hours of gameplay at 3am in a deserted 0.0 system without a CTD, but if I try to target, open a can, activate mods, and type in chat all at the same time (or any other combination of UI actions) the percentage is very high that I will CTD.
today something very interesting happened, I CTD after trying to target a scrambling frig after I tried to warp. of course I come back to 15% structure, all mods offline and pop.... so I get my jag, come back to get my can, get my gear, go to pop the offending frigs, and CTD AGAIN!!! same EXACT situation (yes I lost that ship too). after ALL that I have tried client side to fix the issue, this instance leads me to believe that there is something in the code that is causing all this and it isnt just some specific client issue. I am at a loss where to go with this at this point. I will try running the logserver as was suggested, but the only other constant is my settings folder. I dont know how/why it would cuase such issues, but always I am swapping this folder into my eve cache (for obvious reasons) and maybe there-in lies the rub, so to speak.
on a more optimistic note, I hope that this post, along with the 15 page post on lag has/will get CCP to take notice of this issue, because it WILL kill this game sooner or later, regardless of how awesome the concept/content is. and on a more selfish level, I pay, I wanna play, damn it!!!

This seems to have fixed the problem for my dual-core Pentium setup running on XP with an ATi X600 card. I found it in a PDF on ATi site after much poking about.
1. Launch regedit and determine the current primary display card by looking in
HKey_Local_Machine\Hardware\DeviceMap\Video
and note the GUID (global unique identifier assigned by Windows), which is the long string in brackets { } at the end of the entry
\device\video0. [NOTE: this was actually video1 for me. video0 did not have a GUID but an ATi driver entry]
2. Look in
HKey_Local_Machine\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Video\{GUID}\0000
where {GUID} is the number derived from the previous step.
3. Open the 0000 directory and create a new DWORD called
OGL_ThreadControl and give it a value of 2.
This will disable multithreading in the driver for all OpenGL applications.
4. [Note: I did not do this step] If you want to disable driver multithreading for all Direct3D applications:
In the same 0000 directory, create a new DWORD called
WTD_EXECMODEL and give it a value of 0.
I don't advise doing this if you are not familiar / comfortable with editing the registry.

Edited by: Menthollated on 09/10/2006 10:43:41 I was going to start a new topic on this very subject. Glad I read the forum first.
The undock crash happens to me 1 undock out of 5. I get black screens when trying to reappear out of a gate. Sometimes when I dock I get no icons on the menu bar on the left of the screen.
I'm a very new player to the game - been playing for less than two weeks and although I'm enjoying the game immensely it does put me off playing as the crashes happen at the most inappropriate times.
I'm not getting these problems with any other game or graphically intensive programmes that I use, Call of Juarez, any Steam application, Call of Duty, WoW to name but a few.
----- Graphics card: Nvidia 7800 GTX 512mb CPU: 2 x 3.20 Ghz Intel Pentium 4 (with affinity set to 2nd processor for EVE) RAM: 2 GB Sound: SB Audigy 2 ZS O/S: Windows XP (version 2002) with service pack 2 built in Connection: 10mb Broadband with Telewest in the UK -----
Any help or a patch to resolve these issues gratefully accepted. Thank you for your time reading this.

This is good news...gonna try this fix this evening.
The AMD drivers and Dual Core Optimizer did nothing for me. Having one stick of RAM as opposed to two helped a little, but I still CTD eventually...sent yet another bug report
I'm disappointed that we have had no dev response to this. We really shouldn't have to go delving into the Registry to change OpenGL or Direct3D multithreading options to get EVE stable. What else will fiddling with these settings do to our PCs? It would be nice to know that CCP have built a dual core system and are at least trying to reproduce and debug this problem

I've forwarded this fix to the GMs as part of my ongoing petitions. However, I was playing last night and was still having problems with jumps and undocking - no hard lock or CTD but still hanging so it's not a 100% fix

well I guess this is more a lag issue. It was horrible in some systems for me too.

Well, undock and jump problems are not uncommon due to lag or other factors. I've had plenty since being in Eve. It's only the CTDs which are a new thing for me and if you have found a fix then well done and many thanks ! I will try this tonight on my CoreDuo rig.
If this is the workaround then it does fairly accurately pinpoint the problem to Eve's gfx threading and hopefully we should get a Fix or at least a response from the Devs would be nice on this.
It will also be interresting to see what impact this on performance in other games. (Probably negative) I am guessing that it means all gfx coding is processed on one core rather than split over both.

Well I tried the regedit:
I have 4 of these on my system:
HKey_Local_Machine\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Video\{GUID}\0000
All of them have the vgacompatible thing so I just used the first one. I was doing ok but still had one CTD on jumping this morning. So maybe not out of the woods. Maybe I need to add the change to each one ?
Also maybe this does not apply to Nvidia cards ? I have a 7900GTX.

I actually deleted all but one of the 3 I had. One was for Netmeeting or something, and the other one for some kind of RPPC or something like that.
Anyway, did you have 2 clients running maybe? Running 2 Clients caused ctd for me too. Glad I have a Laptop I can run my other account on :)

I just got an intel core 2 duo. IMMEDIATELY upon starting to play eve from this new PC I got "disconnected from server" messages routinely. Now nothing else has changed, same router, etc. I have a new ethernet card etc on the new pc. But the old pc is still attached to the router. Playing on the old PC I do not have the disconnects. I'll have it on using a 2nd account. It stays connected. I'm bumped off. So if I'm bumped off the new pc and not the old one, it's not the internet connection.
It could be some instability in my new custom built system, but there is no other software product made for Windows that I have to spend hours tweaking my system to be able to use. Eve is very special. |

Update:
The crashes that I am experiencing (also of the "freeze" kind) _seem_ to happen more in populated systems than in rather empty systems. Also, I had that freeze in mid warp, whereas I only got it on jumping over the last weeks.
This is becoming annoying, really.

Could you imagine if Eve was a DVD.
Customer: DVD plays for a while but crashes on a chapter change. Support: Did you disable audio on your DVD player ? Customer: Yes it still stops playing though. Support: Did you upgrade your DVD player to the latest firmware ? Customer: Yes but I still get the same problem. Support: Is your DVD player overheating ? Customer : It plays any other DVD just fine.
etc.

Where is CCP?
I just got my new computer Mainboard: MSI K9N Platinum (NVIDIA nForce 570 Ultra) GEEM04 Processor: Athlon 64 X2 4200+ (2200 MHz) HEEA12 RAM: DIMM 1 GB DDR2-800 Kit (for PC) IAIE8M Graphics card:NX7600GT-T2D256E (256 MB GDDR3) JAXNNC
I hjave no infos on overheating, but the system tends, when i use EvE, to CTD, and some time later it randomly reboots, without any windows messages of a critical system failure or something like this. I never seen anything like that before, just only on the new system. Sound is disabled.

I am frustrated beyond belief.
I have cleared cache. I have tried windowed mode. I have shut down all background programs and unnecessary processes in the task man I disabled sound ingame AND on my PC I set only one affinity (yes amd dual core as well amd 64X2 4200+ Nvidia 6600GT OC Machine is clean. I even reset my router and tried straight cable/ethernet connection. Nada
So frustrating - for days I was fine and then BAM one day i log in and I am disconnecting now every 5 minutes. I want to smash my head on a pointy asteroid. I filed a petition, but I have crashed over 25 times in a few hours attempting to play. Doesn't matter what I am doing, reading mail, trying to chat in a channel, mining, warping, simply clicking in space and BAM down. Seriously, this is ridiculous....
I really like EVE but I can't play like this. I'm annoyed now I have prepaid my account. When you log in and disconnect within a minute over 5 times in a row, its time to bring out another game... I hope someone finds a solution to this :(
Does anyone know if CCP is trying to come up with a fix? I enabled the log server and the amount of errors is incredible...Im going to reinstall game and see if that helps...

I think its incredible that CCP have not even had the balls to come on this thread and just say "yes we know about it guys and were trying to fix it" or something to those lines. Infact going back to the post about what if EVE was a DVD, your emplying that your in a conversation with customer support.
ATM the customer support is non-existant.

Thats probably learned by hard and i heard it so many times. Sharkbait said something on the first page of this thread, now they are quiet since then.
I wonder if CCp is ever going to make a statement oon this.

Edited by: Becham on 13/10/2006 14:50:33 New player here. I was experiencing a similar problem. At seemingly random times, my client would crash and system would reboot at these events;
NPC pirate exploding Open cargo can Opening fire on NPC pirate
I've updated all my sound (AC97) and video (ATI Radeon X700) drivers. edit: I don't have a dual processor.
The only workaround was to BOTH put game in window mode and disable sound in game. Kind of lame to have to play a space game in total silence and in a mini window. Any ETA on a patch for the patch that appears to have caused the problem?

Given the general non response from Devs on this one, I am guessing that they are just hoping the kali patch might make some of the problems go away. I certainly am hoping that the Jump and Undock CTDs go away.

I've just begun experiencing these crashes as well and was hoping to find a solution on this thread :( ...seeing as how most everyone has posted their setup, here is mine.
Asus duo-core 2.13 liquid cooled nvidia geforce 7950gt 512mb 2.0gig ram
etc, etc
I found the onboard soundmax audio device was giving me issues with other apps, replaced that with soundblaster card, other apps work fine now...but eve still crashes at random times with and without sound enabled. By crashing i mean the computer reboots and i receive "your computer has recovered from a serious error...click here to send report" ...etc.
I hope someone finds a solution to this soon.
Oh, one more thing. I just got this computer 2 days ago (so quite new) and i downloaded the eve client. I still have the cd from 2003, but didn't feel like manually putting in all the patches. I got the impression some of you feel it is the most recent patch causing the issues? Hopefully its that and not our hardware...as you all know trying to narrow down a problem with your comp is time consuming and frustrating.
