Try manually editing your prefs.ini file in the Eve cache folder. This information can be found elsewhere, but I thought it would be useful to people is I posted it here for reference. Try changeing the default buffer size to something greater than the default 80. Common sizes are 128, 256, or 512, depending on how much system memory you have. This change, more than any other, seemed to help me. I am not saying it will help EVERYONE or that it is a solution to ALL of the sloppy-code-crappy-patch-dev-caused issues, but it did seem to help decrease the FREQUENCY of CTDs, general client lockups, SOME minor fps improvement, and other general wierdness that has been caused by the most recent string of patches. Note, I didn't say it made them go away, it just makes them pop up their ugly heads a LOT less. At least for me. Try NOT to increase the buffer size to anything larger than 25%-50% of your total system RAM as this would NOT be a good thing. Remember to consider if you commonly run more than one client instance. I.E. If you have 2 gigs of RAM, and you run two clients, don't go beyond 512; because 512+512 = 1024 or 50% or your total memory. Sometimes, on some systems, the right number for you can be a little strange. For instance: I run with 2GB of ram, and I run 2 clients, but it seems to run the smoothest for me if I have the buffer set on 128. Indivual results may vary, so you might have to play with it. I sincerely hope this manages to help someone. Now for the rant, for those of you who don't like them, look away: /rant on
We shouldn't HAVE to be required to do any coding or tweeking of this nature if it was designed and implemented PROPERLY in the first place! /rant off
Yes, it was a short one, but I felt it needed to be said, AGAIN. Cheers all!(except Grez) Hope it helps! *

Well, changing the cpu affinity so that EVE only uses one core helped a little By a little, I mean I managed 9 jumps before it CTD rather than the usual 3

Same problem. CTD with no messages when entering (almost any) area. Tried running from my laptop with the same issue. I don't want to stop playing altogether, but this is ridiculous. All other games/aps work fine on both computers.

Interesting that the Core Duo T2400 laptop is also unstable. I've just ordered a new lappy with a Core Duo CPU (not for gaming luckily ) so I'll see what results I get with EVE on it. I'll just install EVE, nothing else but a fresh OS, and see what happens...not holding my breath

Yes this is interesting.
Two machines different video cards so likely rule out GFX as being the cause. Also I have two machines one Dual core, the other isn't guess which one is stable and whiche isn't.
I think we have ruled out audio, we have ruled out GFX. so it really boils down to memory or dual core machines (even with core affinity).
I have until 8th Nov on this subscription. If Kali isn't out by then I'm gonna unsubscribe and resubscribe when Kali available and stable. There is really a limit how much "trouble shooting" one should have to do to make a game work properly.
PS. I bought Company of Heroes to keep me going... runs rock solid !

Ive posted in a few threads about crashes with Eve, it seems there is a core of forum lurkers who like to suggest tweaks, turning off sound (huh ? like I wanna play with no sound ???), updating drivers, video card incompatibility, overheating blah blah blah.
The common denominator is EVE, I ran on the same drivers for 10 months until Eve started crashing and I went on the infernal "what is crashing eve ? " hunt.
Guess what ? It's been seveal weeks now with no sgn of it getting better, I know several corp. members with varying setups and they have the same problem.
Can we stop this stupid list of what if's and can CCP start commenting on the forums about what they are doing or whether they are even looking into this ?
I mean if they even had the decency to acknowledge there is a problem that would be something.
I run 2 accounts have been playing for over a year so I am firmly embedded in Eve but seriously if this doesn't get sorted soon I will quit and I am sure I am not the only one.
So here it is the inevitable spec list and list of things I have tried : AMD X2 4400 Asus KN8 SLI 2 x GeForce 7300GT SLI (2x256mb DDR3) 2Gb memory. Realtek AC97 Onboard sound Nvidia NForce 4 Chipset. Amntec P180 case.
Latest video, mobo, sound drivers as of 16/10/06. Tried a fresh install of WinXP Pro (sp2) with anti virus, firewall and just Eve installed. No, I am not over heating on my CPU or GFX. Setting the CPU affinity does not help. Running in windowed mode does not help. Turning off sound does not help. playingwith more than one account makes no difference. Clearing the cache does not help. Uprating the memory allowance in the ini does not help. Tweaking the AA does not help.
Playing another game helps enormously with my stress levels but does nothing for my Eve time. If you are telling me "well it could be the way Eve accesses your hardware and so that's why other games work and Eve doesn't", well, I think CCP need to reconsider since they are bugging a whole slice of the Eve community right now.
OK,Ok /rant. Thank you for bothering to read this.

Apparently Devs don't tend to read or contribute to this part of the forum. Why this is I just don't understand I tried to get a response by posting in the General forum and got the brush-off, with a standard response of "submit bug reports with crash dumps and server logs, we promise these are all looked into". Better than nothing I suppose, so I guess we've just got to wait for a fix to appear with Kali.

I've been having the same trouble on a P4 2.8. It's gotten so bad now that I just can't play.....I'd run out of isk if I tried, plus it just wouldn't be much fun.......and, let's face it, that's why I'm playing.
Out of desperation, I built up a basic tower with leftover bits from past upgrades. It has nothing in common with my usual rig......and still CTD's constantly. Unless it's a modem/ISP issue (and packet-loss check says not), it's just EVE.
Interesting that so many dual-core users have this problem, but it isn't just confined to them alone.
Does EVE use a heartbeat check? The way it just tosses you back to desktop makes me wonder whether I'm failing checks for some reason. (/me just hit limit of technical knowledge, if you can't tell)

This actually helped a lot on my second account but not on this one....still get CTD as soon as I leave emergency warp. |

Further update: the reason this account seems to get 10 times the number of crashes is related to looking at Amarr stations. Anyone else have Amarr-graphics around when the CTD's kick in? |

Edited by: Talion Shar on 25/10/2006 06:24:43 i guess you all got the newest nvidia driver 91.47 installed.
i installed it last week: * missions runs a bit smoother, but might depends on lag or no lag. * as soon as i want to jump into high populated system the PC freeze.
i just rolled back the driver to nvidia 84.21, fixed that for me. you should try that too, if older graphics driver work for you too.
Download the 84.21 WinXP/2k 32.bit here
nvidia driver archive
to get rid of blue screens: turn the sound in eve off. uncheck the box in the options, not turning the sound off from your pc
i had issues specially fighting vs minmatar or npc using projectiles weapons, i am pretty sure somewhere in this forum there is a post about that windows xp sp2 got a problem with this issue, specially for this sound, but atm im too lazy to use the eve-search.

Edited by: Matt Steel on 25/10/2006 21:30:48 I had the same problem of crashing, either locked up the computer or the computer booted up.. and i played without sound for awhile, but that's no fun.
Until i took off my SBlaster card and installed the Motherboard audio drivers.. problem solved.. i really did not like taking the Audigy out, but playing Eve was simply not possible with it, i even tried alternate drivers for it (kx-project) but no luck. In all your posts you dont say what audio card you have, if you play ok without sound, then for some odd reason your audio card is causing the problem.
I know it is a pain, but try installing your motherboard audio and taking your audio card out. Might just solve your problems.

I just have to say I have been getting an increasing amount of CTD as well. Mine always seem to happen right after I have moved through a jump gate and right when my ship starts into warp.
I am running on a newly built system: AMD Athlon 64X2 4800 2Ghz HT Socket 939 Dual Core Processor Asus A8n32-SLI Deluxe ATX AMD MoBo 2X1GB Corsair SMX DDR 400 (PC 3200) Memory XFX GeForce 7800GTX 16x SLI 512MB Graphics Card
As someone else already mentioned, first we shouldn't have to "reinstall this" or "re-check drivers for that" or "reformat our computers". With so many people having problems don't you all think this should be address by the Developers? It is pretty apparent there is a bug in their software someplace. Maybe there is code in the net coding that can't handle Dual Cores or something we all have on our newer machines but they are the ones that should be addressing the problem. I find it highly disheartening to find a lack of response from the Devs back to the community, especially a community that seems to be quite level headed, smart and know what they are talking about. Lets all hope they are actually doing something about the problem and not just hoping the next content update will magically solve the problem.

I have recently changed motherboard, from an amd athlon A8V-E deluxe to an NF-95, the A8V-E destroyed itself (I am yet to find whether eve had anything to do with that), when I was using the A8V-E eve would very occasionally freeze, and one time when it froze I rebooted and the computer died. I now have the NF-95, now eve crashes very often when opening windows in game, docking, jumping warping etc. in much the same way as has been described many times in this tread. Is there anything I can do to stop this happening?, and I have tried disabling the sound in game. P.S.- Please donĘt shout a load of technical language and abbreviations at me, I wont understand them. Cheers for any help.

I have been playing eve for over 2 years now, but lately I keep on crashing when warping into a fight (meaning where people are shooting, no matter how many). And it's not the crash to desktop, but just the computer who reboots...
Tried almost everything (clear cache, no sound, etc... ), nothing worked.
I've missed 6 nice battles over the past weeks, due to this problem.

Strange you should say this. I haven't played on my troublesome PC for a while but I thought I'd give it another go seeing I've just installed a new modem/wireless router combo. It was slightly more stable....managed about 13 jumps, but when it finally CDT (I was AFK so didin't see it) the server log did mention something about Amarr structures. Couldn't submit a bug report/crash dumb because they've suspended those until after Kali by the looks of things.
On a side note my new lap-top (Rock Pegasus 665) has an Intel Core 2 Duo and NVIDIA GeForce Go 7600 256MB graphics and plays EVE without a glitch.
Really hope Kali sorts this out

I have the same issue
amd 64 x2 2mb cache A8 r32 mvp deluxe mobo 2 gb ddr
although i have some client crashes more regularly i get a bsod that mentions the realtek audio driver
- it happens regularly when i warp to a gang member - even more regularly when running 2 clients
I think its possible the the realtek/dual core/eve client could be verry possible, but never used to get this error until withing the last month or so.

I had severe crashing issues after the patch, lots of random crashing with no apparent reason. I had quit playing until I dug up an old post from october with a suggestion. Amazingly enough it worked for me and I haven't crashed since.
Make sure you have advancedDevice=1 set. Go to video settings ingame and look for the "present interval" box. Depending on what the parent setting is, the choices will be interval immediate, interval default, interval one, interval two, etc. Mine was on immediate. Change it to interval default. That's it. Cleaned my problem right up. For reference I run a dual-core E6700 and a 7950 geforce, so it may be an Nvidia specific fix.
If you try this, please let us know if it did or didn't work for you, and what video card you are running. I had quit playing completely because of the incessant crashing. If it works as a general fix people need to know.

Problem is that many people with dual-core cpu machines are running EVE without a glitch, even some of CCP devs by the looks of things (Linkage)
So it's not just a dual-core problem. I think most of us have ruled out sound related causes , but other than that no-one is any the wiser.
The bottom line, still, as far as I'm concerned is that EVE was fine on my PC and then only started these CTD after the last major patch a few months ago. CCP changed some code, somewhere, which has caused these instabilities for a small minority of us.
Keep those crash dumps and server logs going in and lets hope they can get to the bottom of it

Just thought i would add my bit. Yes, same as everyone else, Random CTD's when jumping or un-docking. Also random freezes now aswell! Running on a clean install of Windows with latest drivers, 'Disable sound' fix does not work, 'Windowed mode' fix does not work, 'Affinity'... Nope! Heat is NOT an issue in my system. ARGHHH! Oh well, will just keep trying to play.

This seems to definitely be a problem with the sound card\driver. I think I may have found a possible fix though. It involves a program called Total Recorder, which installs a virtual sound driver that simply passes the sound to the real card. The main purpose is to allow you to record any streaming sound on your computer. However, for EVE, when I set it as my default driver, EVE no longer crashes.
The website for the program is here. Don't worry about paying for it, the evaluation version does everything you need to fix the crashing problem.

He is not alone on this issue. I have personally experienced this and have spoke with at least 40 other people in game on this this subject as they have encountered it also.
It also seems to occur more frequently when more than one client is being used at the same time on the same pc. ie like a large % of eve peeps have and run more than one account, I used to be able run 4 no probs prior to the patch, I can now barely run 2. It appears to eat a lot more of the CPU when there is a session change, hell of a lot more since the patch infact. CPU hits 100% and eve literally hangs. The client does detect this state as it warps you off as it would if it detects lag when jumping in. Just a little more insight to issue anyhow hope it helps
