Seriously.
Before I signed up to play this game I read through these forums and was fascinated by all the cool stories about ransoms, pirating and so forth. I'm really into roleplay and storytelling and all the rest of it, so I thought to myself "this EVE things sounds like great fun, I can't wait to get ransomed by a pirate"... so I signed up.
I did meet a few pirates but none of them wanted to ransom, all they wanted to do was blow my ship up and then pod me without saying a word. Didn't matter if I was in a shuttle with nothing in it, or if I was in a hauler with semi-valuable stuff in it, or a combat ship and trying to attack them or whatever. Didn't matter that my character was only 1 week old, or 1 month old. Didn't seem to matter what corp I was in. I tried to engage these people in conversation - nothing. Oh, except "I don't play EVE to make friends" from one charmer. And then he closed the channel. That's the most conversation I've ever gotten out of a pirate to this day, and I've been killed by so-called pirates many, many times. What a letdown. I'm not the sort of player who cares if I win or lose, as long as I have fun. I don't mind dying, but I do mind dying in an uninteresting, uncreative manner, time and time again. Is it wrong to expect pirates to make some sort of effort, at least some of the time? Even a simple "prepare to die, carebear scum" before I get inevitably ganked and podded would make things slightly more interesting than fighting an NPC rat and it would add some much-needed colour to what feels like a pretty soul-less game (well, at least the pirating aspect of it feels that way). I'm convinced that most so-called 'pirates' just gank anything they can for some sort of perverse power kick, perhaps to compensate for a lack of power in their real lives, kind of like a schoolyard bully who gets abused at home by his parents, because I can't really see what else they could possibly be getting out of it.
Don't get me wrong though, this isn't an "I hate pirates" flamebait type of post. I have much repect for those of you who are actually pirating and making the game interesting and worth playing. I just can't find any of you. I really, really, genuinely want to know where all you ransoming, roleplaying (or at least semi-roleplaying as not many people do the real deal here) pirates, who play the game in at least a vaguely interesting manner, actually are. I KNOW you exist because I read all about the ransom attempts and tactics on these forums. As soon as I find out where the real pirates hang out, I'll head down there in a hauler filled with megacyte (that is, if I can even GET past the boring gatecamps and into 0.0 to mine any - but that's a story for another thread...). They'll have certainly earnt it... hey, I might even give a tip to the first pirate who actually pirates me properly... --

I can't say whether I agree or disagree with that thread, because I can't even GET into 0.0 to verify whether what you're saying is true.
I think that if pirates want to make a ton of money, they should gank mining vessels on their way OUT of 0.0 once they've mined all the juicy minerals, not in their way IN when they're empty. I even offered one guy at a gatecamp once, to get into 0.0, mine some minerals while he escorted me, and then he could have the ore once I was done, and even podkill me later if he really wanted. Just because I was sick of getting ganked right at the gate and wanted to actually GET IN THERE. Silence and a podkill was what I got from that - just like every other time. Of course. --

Pirates don't ransom because the vast majority of the time people reject it.
An old quote goes something like this: "Carebears whine all the time about pirates not offering ransoms, but when asked if they would accept one, they say 'hell no, I'd never accept a ransom!' ."

I would say that situation in EVE is about the same as in any other online game. Roleplayers are a minority. Most pirates just destroy the ships and pod to get a corpse or boost their killboard. However there are also those who ransom and roleplay to an extend (Veto for example).
When I hunt I do try to ransom when possible, but it doesn't always work out. Yesterday I spotted a Jaguar in a belt, went for him, locked him up, scrambled, webbed and started shooting. The guy started screaming his head off in local in Swedish. So seeing that everybody knows i am here now and he might not speak very good english I decided to pop him. Good thing I did though, because he dropped Domination 10MN MWD.
Later in the day I tried to get a Ferox, but he was stabbed. The guy convoed me after my first attempt to catch him and asked to leave him alone. So I "RP'ed" with him a little and got 1 million to let him be for 24 hours. It all depends who you run into really and on circumstances.
Good luck finding pirates who ransom. They do exist, and there are many solo pirates who do that; not just famous corporations. I was ransomed before even though I am a pirate myself

Pirating is simple; If a target wants to pay your ransom hes carrying something thats more expensive then said ransom. Hence he gets to die in the hopes of the expensive item dropping as loot.
Other then that talking to victims is bad, usually results in getting smacktalked at anyway. -----

I'd happily pay a ransom way in excess of my cargo worth + ship, just for the experience, because that's what my character would do, to save her skin. But then I suppose roleplayers are in the vast minority here, so I can't expect people to understand that... --

I'm sorry, but when my ships have an average price tag of 40.00.000 - 150.000.000 your 500.000 ransom offer isnt quite as tempting as the 0.1% chance that you're an undercover bpo hauler.
I will however always accept your convo, and I will mostly open one myself, dont expect to get off unless you're ready to cough up a few mill thou. Real Gangsta |

Just to counter that. Never have I been smacktalked to when ransoming, and no target rejected a reasonable ransom except for those who don't pay pirates in general.
The idea of ransom is indeed to make your target lose less than their ship is worth, by the way. It might not be profitable at once, but in the long run killing everything that moves is like skinning sheep instead of just cutting the wool.

We'll I have to say that opinions are always splited in 2 ... but sincerely if i realy want to have fun when i'm killed i dont resort to pirats ... Have u ever tried geting u'rself involved in a war cos I ahve to tell u it's quite nice and u always have a chance to chat with u'r enemy so this is the most rewarding time in EVE not those -10 guys who only make the experience for everione else soo doll and boring . My corp was recently in a war with a nice merc corp ... they took a contract for that and I have to say they were allways nice and fair even when they podkilled me , the 12 days in war were the most enjoiable time ever when i was podkilled and enjoied it . btw this is just an alt i'm using for privachy reasons ! Edited by: Mikkel Lybecker on 22/09/2006 11:10:05 Yeah wars are good, because they're far more interesting - if nothing else they usually have a backstory and a purpose, and at best the other corp is an RP corp and you can duke it out with a real sense of achievement and the fulfillment of your character's destiny (even if that destiny means getting your butt kicked). There are plenty of ways to enjoy EVE and have a good time, I just think pirating has a lot of underutilised potential at the moment, and it's probably the most 'wasted' area in EVE, story-wise. If you look at the history and folklore that surrounds piracy in the real world, it's one of the most fertile areas for storytelling. Even modern criminals make great copy - look at any 'true crime' shelf at any bookstore to verify this. Then you look at the way pirates behave in EVE... --

Whats worthless about a Killboard.
U play a game to have fun and be better then others. Most people say they dont, but there's ALWAYS competition involved.
There isn't any pvp corp out there that doesn't have a Killboard, or members posting on one. ------------------------------

Thats what i dont understand. You get all excited because "us PvPers" like to be good at what we do. The higher our scores on those Killboards (wich is not the only reason y we use it) the better we do and the more we learn.
Now, i dont care about isk. I make just enough and sometimes a lot from just PvP. U only care about Building> Selling > ISK ISK ISK.
I dont see whats the difference. Some people prefer the Thrills of PVP, others prefer sitting in station or bestower showing off their BPO's!

Hehe guess it varies per region. Around here people carrying faction goodies arent all that rare, a lot of them use t2 gear as well. They never want to pay ransom though so i just stopped asking. Much easier and once theyre out of local they cant smacktalk either -----

Honestly, the killboard comments aren't that far off from topic. Mikkel Lybecker brings up that the possibilities of the game aren't being fulfilled.
If you're playing for points in your killboard and nothing else you're as dull as an npc rat to your victims. A lot of pirates contribute as much to the color of the game as the macro miners and farmers do, and that's the center of his complaint as best I can tell.
I don't disagree, either. A little RP never hurt anyone, and makes the game much more fun to play for everyone involved.

Edited by: spRAYed on 22/09/2006 14:20:35 Its really not only the so called "Pirates" fault, that ransoms arent being put into action anymore.
Victems these days:
- Half of them doesn't speak a word of english. How hard is it to understand "Yo amig=! 30 mill in 30 seconds or ye be gone!"
- They call in their mates when they say "you give me time more to have monye frum friends pelease? And backstab u because u give them at least some chance at all and wait that CRUCIAL bit longer..
Now its not completely fair to say its all the fault of those that where ransomed. In the past they might have had a guy blowing them up after giving his word etc etc. I understand.
But i think u should give every pirate a fair chance for the best of u both.
And i dont play FOR the killboards, i think its motivating people when they see what others can do, and what u havent accomplished yet. ------------------------------

Edited by: Mikkel Lybecker on 22/09/2006 15:14:46 * I speak English. I understand a ransom attempt.
* I can't call for backup. I'm in my own one-person corp. It's not part of any Alliance or anything else, and I have no allies in the game whatsoever.
* Your killboard does not impress me. I do not care about your killboard, it means absolutely nothing to me. If you are playing as a pirate, your ability to roleplay a pirate is what impresses me. If you can do THAT, and you can successfully bail up my hauler, you can have 10m ISK. If you can RP it properly I'd be so impressed that I probably wouldn't even be mad if you ganked me after I paid.
A story is more interesting to me than numbers in rows. The best thing that ever happened to computer games, as a whole, happened around the mid-90's. Games stopped keeping score. Early games like Space Invaders, PacMan etc were unwinnable, you just kept going to get a score higher than everyone else on the scoreboard so you could say 'look at me'. Modern games are more like Half Life, they have a story, a beginning, a middle and an end like a novel or a movie. Because game designers realised that people wanted something more interesting and meaningful than numbers in rows. I don't think that it should be so unusual to play EVE like a story instead of a numbers game, especially as CCP has put such a lot of work into the story itself, for players to do this. There are Aurora actors for a reason. They want you to roleplay. If EVE is just about killboards and ISK, we might as well call the races "blue, yellow, red and green" instead of "Minmatar, Caldari, Amarr and Gallente" - because if you take away the story, what difference does it make what the races are called? Or how they got there? EVE has the potential to be an epic space adventure that puts the likes of Elite/Frontier, Privateer etc as well as all other MMORPGs to shame, but most so-called 'pirates' play EVE like Space Invaders with prettier graphics. --

i feel the same way as the OP.
ive been killed 8 times by "pirates"
never once even been convo'd.
except one time this guy named theoffspring convod me cuz him and his other ascn buddies chased me whilst i was in a shuttle. i was total noob and literally wanted to know what was at the bottom most system, so i went to find out. he gave me a few mil, was very nice of him.
i think ransoming has gone the way of chivalry. its only something we see in funny british movies with holy hand grenades. -----------------------------------------------

You do ofcourse all know that the original pirates did not actually..ransom..they killed the crew members looted the ship and sunk/sold the ships.
People who keep others line hanging in the balance in exchange for money, are kidnappers or blackmailers.
So don't say we can't call ourselves pirates, i'm toying around with my stealth bomber toy atm..and I really don't see how i'd ransom you with this thing from 100+km :P Real Gangsta |

Very true, like the pirates in eve they very rarely assulted superiour forces and stuck to preying on the weaker more profitable prey:)

well since u belive pirates should ransom always and u like to rp.
here is a idea, make a 15 day pirate alt, go to lowsec, have said alt attack your ship at a belt, ransom yourself, accidetly pod yourself, whine more on forums that after u got ransomed(which u wanted) he didnt honor it.
because u made this topic i have a big feelin that u will be ransomed and then it will be dishonored.
