Seriously.
Before I signed up to play this game I read through these forums and was fascinated by all the cool stories about ransoms, pirating and so forth. I'm really into roleplay and storytelling and all the rest of it, so I thought to myself "this EVE things sounds like great fun, I can't wait to get ransomed by a pirate"... so I signed up.
I did meet a few pirates but none of them wanted to ransom, all they wanted to do was blow my ship up and then pod me without saying a word. Didn't matter if I was in a shuttle with nothing in it, or if I was in a hauler with semi-valuable stuff in it, or a combat ship and trying to attack them or whatever. Didn't matter that my character was only 1 week old, or 1 month old. Didn't seem to matter what corp I was in. I tried to engage these people in conversation - nothing. Oh, except "I don't play EVE to make friends" from one charmer. And then he closed the channel. That's the most conversation I've ever gotten out of a pirate to this day, and I've been killed by so-called pirates many, many times. What a letdown. I'm not the sort of player who cares if I win or lose, as long as I have fun. I don't mind dying, but I do mind dying in an uninteresting, uncreative manner, time and time again. Is it wrong to expect pirates to make some sort of effort, at least some of the time? Even a simple "prepare to die, carebear scum" before I get inevitably ganked and podded would make things slightly more interesting than fighting an NPC rat and it would add some much-needed colour to what feels like a pretty soul-less game (well, at least the pirating aspect of it feels that way). I'm convinced that most so-called 'pirates' just gank anything they can for some sort of perverse power kick, perhaps to compensate for a lack of power in their real lives, kind of like a schoolyard bully who gets abused at home by his parents, because I can't really see what else they could possibly be getting out of it.
Don't get me wrong though, this isn't an "I hate pirates" flamebait type of post. I have much repect for those of you who are actually pirating and making the game interesting and worth playing. I just can't find any of you. I really, really, genuinely want to know where all you ransoming, roleplaying (or at least semi-roleplaying as not many people do the real deal here) pirates, who play the game in at least a vaguely interesting manner, actually are. I KNOW you exist because I read all about the ransom attempts and tactics on these forums. As soon as I find out where the real pirates hang out, I'll head down there in a hauler filled with megacyte (that is, if I can even GET past the boring gatecamps and into 0.0 to mine any - but that's a story for another thread...). They'll have certainly earnt it... hey, I might even give a tip to the first pirate who actually pirates me properly... --

I can't say whether I agree or disagree with that thread, because I can't even GET into 0.0 to verify whether what you're saying is true.
I think that if pirates want to make a ton of money, they should gank mining vessels on their way OUT of 0.0 once they've mined all the juicy minerals, not in their way IN when they're empty. I even offered one guy at a gatecamp once, to get into 0.0, mine some minerals while he escorted me, and then he could have the ore once I was done, and even podkill me later if he really wanted. Just because I was sick of getting ganked right at the gate and wanted to actually GET IN THERE. Silence and a podkill was what I got from that - just like every other time. Of course. --

Pirates don't ransom because the vast majority of the time people reject it.
An old quote goes something like this: "Carebears whine all the time about pirates not offering ransoms, but when asked if they would accept one, they say 'hell no, I'd never accept a ransom!' ."

I would say that situation in EVE is about the same as in any other online game. Roleplayers are a minority. Most pirates just destroy the ships and pod to get a corpse or boost their killboard. However there are also those who ransom and roleplay to an extend (Veto for example).
When I hunt I do try to ransom when possible, but it doesn't always work out. Yesterday I spotted a Jaguar in a belt, went for him, locked him up, scrambled, webbed and started shooting. The guy started screaming his head off in local in Swedish. So seeing that everybody knows i am here now and he might not speak very good english I decided to pop him. Good thing I did though, because he dropped Domination 10MN MWD.
Later in the day I tried to get a Ferox, but he was stabbed. The guy convoed me after my first attempt to catch him and asked to leave him alone. So I "RP'ed" with him a little and got 1 million to let him be for 24 hours. It all depends who you run into really and on circumstances.
Good luck finding pirates who ransom. They do exist, and there are many solo pirates who do that; not just famous corporations. I was ransomed before even though I am a pirate myself

Pirating is simple; If a target wants to pay your ransom hes carrying something thats more expensive then said ransom. Hence he gets to die in the hopes of the expensive item dropping as loot.
Other then that talking to victims is bad, usually results in getting smacktalked at anyway. -----

I'd happily pay a ransom way in excess of my cargo worth + ship, just for the experience, because that's what my character would do, to save her skin. But then I suppose roleplayers are in the vast minority here, so I can't expect people to understand that... --

I'm sorry, but when my ships have an average price tag of 40.00.000 - 150.000.000 your 500.000 ransom offer isnt quite as tempting as the 0.1% chance that you're an undercover bpo hauler.
I will however always accept your convo, and I will mostly open one myself, dont expect to get off unless you're ready to cough up a few mill thou. Real Gangsta |

Just to counter that. Never have I been smacktalked to when ransoming, and no target rejected a reasonable ransom except for those who don't pay pirates in general.
The idea of ransom is indeed to make your target lose less than their ship is worth, by the way. It might not be profitable at once, but in the long run killing everything that moves is like skinning sheep instead of just cutting the wool.

We'll I have to say that opinions are always splited in 2 ... but sincerely if i realy want to have fun when i'm killed i dont resort to pirats ... Have u ever tried geting u'rself involved in a war cos I ahve to tell u it's quite nice and u always have a chance to chat with u'r enemy so this is the most rewarding time in EVE not those -10 guys who only make the experience for everione else soo doll and boring . My corp was recently in a war with a nice merc corp ... they took a contract for that and I have to say they were allways nice and fair even when they podkilled me , the 12 days in war were the most enjoiable time ever when i was podkilled and enjoied it . btw this is just an alt i'm using for privachy reasons ! Edited by: Mikkel Lybecker on 22/09/2006 11:10:05 Yeah wars are good, because they're far more interesting - if nothing else they usually have a backstory and a purpose, and at best the other corp is an RP corp and you can duke it out with a real sense of achievement and the fulfillment of your character's destiny (even if that destiny means getting your butt kicked). There are plenty of ways to enjoy EVE and have a good time, I just think pirating has a lot of underutilised potential at the moment, and it's probably the most 'wasted' area in EVE, story-wise. If you look at the history and folklore that surrounds piracy in the real world, it's one of the most fertile areas for storytelling. Even modern criminals make great copy - look at any 'true crime' shelf at any bookstore to verify this. Then you look at the way pirates behave in EVE... --

Thats what i dont understand. You get all excited because "us PvPers" like to be good at what we do. The higher our scores on those Killboards (wich is not the only reason y we use it) the better we do and the more we learn.
Now, i dont care about isk. I make just enough and sometimes a lot from just PvP. U only care about Building> Selling > ISK ISK ISK.
I dont see whats the difference. Some people prefer the Thrills of PVP, others prefer sitting in station or bestower showing off their BPO's!

Honestly, the killboard comments aren't that far off from topic. Mikkel Lybecker brings up that the possibilities of the game aren't being fulfilled.
If you're playing for points in your killboard and nothing else you're as dull as an npc rat to your victims. A lot of pirates contribute as much to the color of the game as the macro miners and farmers do, and that's the center of his complaint as best I can tell.
I don't disagree, either. A little RP never hurt anyone, and makes the game much more fun to play for everyone involved.

Edited by: spRAYed on 22/09/2006 14:20:35 Its really not only the so called "Pirates" fault, that ransoms arent being put into action anymore.
Victems these days:
- Half of them doesn't speak a word of english. How hard is it to understand "Yo amig=! 30 mill in 30 seconds or ye be gone!"
- They call in their mates when they say "you give me time more to have monye frum friends pelease? And backstab u because u give them at least some chance at all and wait that CRUCIAL bit longer..
Now its not completely fair to say its all the fault of those that where ransomed. In the past they might have had a guy blowing them up after giving his word etc etc. I understand.
But i think u should give every pirate a fair chance for the best of u both.
And i dont play FOR the killboards, i think its motivating people when they see what others can do, and what u havent accomplished yet. ------------------------------

Edited by: Mikkel Lybecker on 22/09/2006 15:14:46 * I speak English. I understand a ransom attempt.
* I can't call for backup. I'm in my own one-person corp. It's not part of any Alliance or anything else, and I have no allies in the game whatsoever.
* Your killboard does not impress me. I do not care about your killboard, it means absolutely nothing to me. If you are playing as a pirate, your ability to roleplay a pirate is what impresses me. If you can do THAT, and you can successfully bail up my hauler, you can have 10m ISK. If you can RP it properly I'd be so impressed that I probably wouldn't even be mad if you ganked me after I paid.
A story is more interesting to me than numbers in rows. The best thing that ever happened to computer games, as a whole, happened around the mid-90's. Games stopped keeping score. Early games like Space Invaders, PacMan etc were unwinnable, you just kept going to get a score higher than everyone else on the scoreboard so you could say 'look at me'. Modern games are more like Half Life, they have a story, a beginning, a middle and an end like a novel or a movie. Because game designers realised that people wanted something more interesting and meaningful than numbers in rows. I don't think that it should be so unusual to play EVE like a story instead of a numbers game, especially as CCP has put such a lot of work into the story itself, for players to do this. There are Aurora actors for a reason. They want you to roleplay. If EVE is just about killboards and ISK, we might as well call the races "blue, yellow, red and green" instead of "Minmatar, Caldari, Amarr and Gallente" - because if you take away the story, what difference does it make what the races are called? Or how they got there? EVE has the potential to be an epic space adventure that puts the likes of Elite/Frontier, Privateer etc as well as all other MMORPGs to shame, but most so-called 'pirates' play EVE like Space Invaders with prettier graphics. --

ive been killed 8 times by "pirates"
never once even been convo'd.
except one time this guy named theoffspring convod me cuz him and his other ascn buddies chased me whilst i was in a shuttle. i was total noob and literally wanted to know what was at the bottom most system, so i went to find out. he gave me a few mil, was very nice of him.

You do ofcourse all know that the original pirates did not actually..ransom..they killed the crew members looted the ship and sunk/sold the ships.
People who keep others line hanging in the balance in exchange for money, are kidnappers or blackmailers.

Very true, like the pirates in eve they very rarely assulted superiour forces and stuck to preying on the weaker more profitable prey:)

I was Pirated for the first time a Few days ago. I was really steamed over the way it all went down. Now I'm not against the Pirate way or anything like that. I was Ratting in a .4 belt and low and behold I see two angry red blips heading my way, so like any other crusier I get ready for a fight, I target and send them a few kisses from the launchers but 2v1 I was no match for them, no big deal good gank on their part. But what I was expecting was to be sitting there with 10% hull and a ransom convo coming my way. I was not to be. All I got was the sound of Auto-Cannons and I was sitting in my pod before I knew it. Me in my defenceless Pod thought the kill was comming but again this Pirate didn't reward me.
So off I warped to my station and picked up a new ship.
I was really mad that these two "Pirates" didn't want a ransom or a pod kill, it's the pirate way right ?. no all they wanted was a T1 Osprey and a bunch of worthless T1 rat loot. What Gives. This is not what I wanted for my first Pirate experence.

My theory is that it is a result of the current fundamental flaw in EVE PvP- stargates. They focus all the travel and result in quick-twitch one-volley sniping and gatecamping. Obviously there is no time for a ransom- then the habit spreads. For most, piracy is more about getting killmails and stretching your e-peen nowadays.

Yes EvE has a TON of roleplaying opportunities. Just alot of people, like myself, do not want to roleplay. I don't find it very fun and thats why games like WoW or EQ aren't fun to me, I don't care about character developement. I care about winning because that is what is fun for me. Yes I can still have fun and lose, but not nearly as much fun when I win. If I beat a cruiser with a battleship, I still have fun.
Another thing is you are confusing pirates with PvP'ers. Pirates fight for the ransom, PvP'ers fight for the kill. And you don't have to be a 100% pirate or pvper. I can ransom one guy in a frig and blow up a battleship instead of ransoming because I feel like it, and vice versa.

EVE has the potential to be an epic space adventure that puts the likes of Elite/Frontier, Privateer etc as well as all other MMORPGs to shame, but most so-called 'pirates' play EVE like Space Invaders with prettier graphics.

Hello im your adverage Carebear....yeah i know....
Anyway I would accept a Random within reason...Im about a month old and fly a caracal....if i were asked for 1-3 million i would accept that as my mods cost just a bit over 2 and i can buy Caracals for 1 million....
The one ransom i received was for 20 million...ive never had over 9 million since ive started playing...so that is why some carebears dont accept...its nowhere near within reason (granted some lie and say they are broke when they have over 100 mill in their wallet...)
Those of your that actually ransom try lowering the price to something more realistic and maybe you will start seeing more traffic...as it stands i wont go near low sec because of this

Edited by: Lifewire on 23/09/2006 00:54:06 @topic creator:
To know why ransoms dont happen much you have to take a look into the game mechanics:
First thing you have to see is that belt piracy got pretty useless after the missions were coded for EVE and emptied the belts. So good places to ransom people, the belts, are empty!
Second thing you have to see is that people in the belts have maybe some good items and some might even have good implants and would be willing to pay a toll, but if you compare the possible income to gate piracy (people move billions of ISK in haulers), then you will see that gate piracy pays much better!
So in the end gate piracy offers a better income. But on gates, and this is the third thing you have to see, it is not easy to toll people. Sentry guns do hurt! There i no time to toll people! And they often hit the mwd or keep approaching the gate in their pods or ships.
Today we tolled 3 people. To be able to toll them we needed a carrier!!!!!!! Only a captal ship tanks long enough to do a enjoyable toll at a gate! So we have to risk 1,5 bil ISK just to get maybe 20 mil. Get this! We risk 1,5 bil to be able to toll people!
So we really try everything to toll and ransom, but the game mechanics are not our fault! I proposed long ago to code a "strike colors button" to offer an option for any traveller to give up before his ship gets shot down. But CCP in its wisdom keeps coding new ships or shipclasses.
However - no. 4 you have to see is that there are simply gankers in this game that enjoy killing without ransoms or pirates that focud on loot. They dont want to waste time with upset customers and just kill them.
N0. 5 you have to see is that once you run a successfull gatecamp, local will fill with pods and 90% of these people are simply smacktalkers. You don¦t want to listen to them. SO to pod them is a clean option.

Ransoming would be a luxury, but not a necessity to have a good time. I'd settle just for some occasional RP'ed CONVERSATION. True, real pirates back in the day didn't ransom a whole lot. But they were also a very vocal bunch of people. They typically had a few words to say while they were killing and pillaging. Notoriously so, in fact.
I do realise some people just play to win. (How can I not - these people are everywhere, in my face constantly) Playing EVE just to win and score points is like going to a brothel just to pay your money, have a conversation and then leave. Sure, it can certainly be fun, and if that's what you like to do then all the best to you, but did you ever feel that you're missing out on something...?
Anyway I'm totally over whining about it, time to get proactive. I'm going to delete this character and start a new pirate one, to show you all how it's done. Will I 'win'? Probably not. Will I pirate with some style? Hell yeah.
And I'll keep my 10m ISK. No-one claimed it in the game... --

Well you could go down to 0.0 and set up a toll gate camp there.
Mikkel ... like you, I like a bit of roleplaying but I'm afraid that - whilst there's a lot of potential for it - there isn't much of it in Eve ... which is a real shame. You've only got to look at some of the stupid names people use for their characters to see that.
But I have to agree that the pirates may be onto a loser with ransoming because, as has been stated, so few people pay them. It's a Catch 22 situation as has been stated elsewhere ... if someone is willing to pay a ransom then there is a fair possibility they have something onboard they don't want to lose and that something will probably be very valuable. So do you, as a pirate, except the ransom or destroy the ship for the potential of more valuable loot? Who knows ...
I know that there are role-playng Corps out there ... track them down and join. ------------------------------------------------

We did this for 2 years together with our friends the Teddybears. I guess we tolled more than 1000 people in FD-MLJ or close to this system. But 0.0 folks have been educated to have no implants. Also their alliances do not allow them to pay a toll and if it gets public that they payed, they will will kicked out of alliance. Also alliances tend to use "fakes" to keep pirates busy and then jump in with a huge blob.
But you are right: when there is time and no blob on the other side of the gate i would allways try to ransom in 0.0. Not to try it means to waste money. I experienced roundabout 5% of tolled pods are willing to pay. So ransom no.20 will bring 20-30 mil ISK. Quick and clean ISK.

Ah "the shuttle-killers are lame"-story. Shuttles have cargoholds, don¦t they. Rancer has a school, or? So what is to be expected in at least some of the shuttles??? Bingo - and now you know why you got 7 x 425mm directly into your coc_kpit.

Now i laughed about that. I died that same evening aswell because i got ganked by a load of other pirates in my Ishkur. I loose ships aswell. The same way he did. Carebears need to stop thinking they only loose ships to us and we never loose anything.

Because when they do try to ask for money, The guy say a bunch of stuff and **** the pirate off even more. me? I have got much better at Pop up a cov with them and asking for money, If they are going they are going to start scream and yell at me, I'm going to say nevermine and blow up there ship. Like last night, All i did was lock on to this guy and warp Scam him, He Invite me to a Cov and said what do you want?! I will give you anything, I asked for 10mill He happyly send it over to me and i let him go on his way. ^_^ I love roleplay <3 it's a good part of this game.

Somebody might have already mentioned this but not everyone who blows your ship up is a "pirate".
Now and then when I'm bored I'll go through low sec and just randomly kill people, I wouldn't call myself a pirate and because of that I would never bother ransoming.
But then that leads to the subject of just what is a pirate? Which I think has been discussed to death already so I'll leave it at that.

You've got it a bit wrong. Playing EVE just to win and score points is like going to a brothel just to pay your money and enjoy the carnal pleasure. Playing EVE to roleplay is like going to the brothel, paying the money and chatting and then taking some carnal pleasure. A lot of people don't get any enjoyment out of the conversation.

What, did you think "pirate" was synonomous with "samurai" or something? There's nothing honorable about being a pirate. I kill people and take their stuff. I don't look for challenging fights. I look for weak victims who will just roll over and die for me. _________________________________________________________

hostoricaly pirates killed first almost always. this notion of the honorable was something rommance novles and disney movies based off of a theme park ride got you.
honorable pirate = dead in .1-.4 space more so. Most pirates dont use cargo scanners so who knows that shuttle of yours might have soemthing valuable. back on my old account before i quit we had to move all BPO's out of 0.0 space and we did so in shuttles because they will almost always be targeted last ina group do to low threat and long lock time.
though podding you ina shuttle makes sense. most people see a noob in a shuttle they think alt sent to find thier positions.

I certainly wouldn't expect pirates to be honourable. I don't think a single person who posted here suggested that pirates were honourable. Because they're not. Pirates are scum who should be podded and swept away with the garbage, everybody knows this. I'm glad that you're all unanimous about this and that all the pirates here realise their place. The pirate rehab programs must be working.
I would, however, expect pirates to TALK, not all the time but at least SOMETIMES have something VAGUELY INTERSTING TO SAY.
Hey if they don't want to talk before they pod me, because they just HAVE to get that kill, and opening a comm channel wastes precious seconds that they could be using to lock onto my empty shuttle, then that's just fine. But what about after the event, when I open up the comm channel? Come on, where's your style? Stop making excuses to not be entertaining. Do you really love the pirate lifestyle, or are you a robot who does what your master says? Why do you pirate? Sure you're 'winning' and getting loot, but there are other ways to win and get loot too (most of which are far more efficient or at least far more reliable and less risky), so why piracy? If you think you're a pirate, and you like your little pirate smileys, then let's see some ideological committment to piracy when I start talking to you. Or let's see some committment to something, ANYTHING, even some ideological committment to making my life miserable will do. These days when a pirate pods me (which is often), the main emotion I feel is not danger, excitement or thirst for revenge, but boredom. Back to waking up in the clone bay again - yawn, stretch... oh, I got podded in my empty shuttle again? Just in time for dinner.
I actually opened up a comm on Lifewire to thank him. I told him that I was on a very long trip back to home base, and that by him podding my empty shuttle I got within 1 jump away instantly. He thought I was making a joke, and he closed the channel. I wasn't joking. By getting back to my base nice and fast, I was able to be more quickly available to my allies for... an anti-pirate operation... ----------------------------------------------

Okay the reason people don't talk when they pirate is that a large group of players (Seemingly composed of older characters in large alliances....)yell "OMG SMACKTALK!!11" whenever a pirate says anything in local or in a convo. For example as the op said: "prepare to die, carebear scum." this would probably be considered smacktalk by some players and thus worthy of the players coming back with friends, alts, etc. Also most pirates are used to the general carebearing response of "ZOMG I HAD NOTHING AND YOU KILLED ME YOU %^*#&%@!!!!1111!!" or the slightly more civilised "WTF did you do that for?! i had nothing in my hauler!" and will assume that your convo will be nothing different from the barrage they normally get.
The reason people don't ransom is because; 1. The only place you can really find people in low sec is at the gates. You can't tank sentries for long enough to ransom really. 2. If you ever do sucessfully ransom anything, you curse yourself because you think the ship had really valuable cargo/fittings. 3. People hardly ever pay ransoms. 3a. Its hard to know what the ransom should be, sure your character may be 15 days old in a hauler, but you could be an alt hauling implants, skillbooks, etc. 3b. I don't know about you, but i don't have a spare midslot to fit 2 scanners to find out what the ship is fitted with and carrying...
From the op: I'm convinced that most so-called 'pirates' just gank anything they can for some sort of perverse power kick, perhaps to compensate for a lack of power in their real lives, kind of like a schoolyard bully who gets abused at home by his parents, because I can't really see what else they could possibly be getting out of it.
Uh, no. I kill things for the loot that they drop and the slight, small chance that the ship i attack will put up a more interesting fight then npcs (Like a certain curse did the other day..) Your fundamental misunderstanding is that you seem to think pirates need to ransom. Pirating is solely making money off other players by attacking them. As it stands it is simply safer and sometimes more profitable (The old thread about the shuttle that dropped a CNR blueprint anyone?) then ransoming.
OKay on another topic, killboards. The reason i use a killboard is to track progress. Also my corp pays for certain kills and the killboard is used to track this.
And btw, Roleplaying pirates? good luck.
If you want to have fun with pirates join an anti-pirate corp or something. That will give you more interaction with pirates generally.

Whats with "pirates must ransom" nonsense. Targets are usually few and far inbetween and the last thing some pirates want to do (Myself included) is to risk his mates in local warping in to save him.
I enjoy scanning someone down, warping to the belt to land within scram range, getting in close and bringing them down. THE ABSOLUTE LAST thing I want is for some A-Hole to smacktalk me and put me down, which is what most of you angry carebears do. If you want to pay a ransom take the initiative and say so in local/start convo. Another idea is if you can't deal with the dangers on low sec go to High Sec, very simple concept, or even better, bring guards to your chosen activity.
Another point, Do pirates give 2 ****s if you like being ransomed or not? No, we're doing what we enjoy, only your unhappy which doesn't phase us the least. Go highsec.
EVE is made open so players can do what they like, not what YOU like, I think its time you guys relised this and moved on.

How many of these convos does an active pirate get? Guess??? 2 per evening, 10?, 100?
I can tell you that a lot of people allways open these kind of convos:"nananananaaaana, you podded me, thank you, i am now at my destination". The question is: why didnt they clonejump anyway if it¦s so fast???

Before I signed up to play this game I read through these forums and was fascinated by all the cool stories about ransoms, pirating and so forth. I'm really into roleplay and storytelling and all the rest of it, so I thought to myself "this EVE things sounds like great fun, I can't wait to get ransomed by a pirate"... so I signed up.
Seriously? Your first thought was "i can't wait to get ransomed by a pirate"? Thats like my first thought being "I can't wait to discover that stargates usually have gun turrets".

Pirates don't ransom. Pirates never ransomed. Pirates boarded a ship took its crew and goods. Or just plain sunk it and sailed off. Most pirates didn't bother to talk either. With a few exceptions the most you got from them was the black flag for "surrender and we show mercy" or the red flag for "you're all going to die". But most EVE pirates don't bother to equip cargo scanners, takes up a useful slot y'know? So how does one know the ammo you jettisonned is really all that you had in your cargo hold? What if you're holding out the T2 ship bpo? Only one way to find out.
Originally by: Mikkel Lybecker Oh, except "I don't play EVE to make friends" from one charmer. And then he closed the channel.
He plays EVE to avoid that.
Originally by: Mikkel Lybecker That's the most conversation I've ever gotten out of a pirate to this day, and I've been killed by so-called pirates many, many times.
The game sometimes does seem a little soul-less. But from what i've heard the NPC element that is holding the game back somewhat is going to be given a huge boost in Kali. I've heard from some old timers that Empire used to be rather dangerous back in ther beginning and it looks like things might head back in that direction.
So its a pirates duty to entertain you while they kill you? If I ever see you in low sec i'll invite you to our ventrilo server so you can hear me sing "like a virgin.. touched for the very first time", which I sing every time I lock a player ship.
A few times i've seen "pirates" say they are "save the asteroids extremists" or "attempting to convert heathen miners to the one true faith".
But people tend to not appreciate these comments... for some reason they get all bent out of shape just because they are being shot at.
Seriousy though... you're in a 1 person corp and you expect alot of player interaction???

And btw, Roleplaying pirates? good luck.
Tor
My corp and I are Roleplaying pirates, and we have immense fun. Roleplaying a criminal character is the most rewarding game experience I've had to date.
When I'm out pirating, I have 2 rules:
1) ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS ransom. Whether it's a pimped out battleship or a worthless shuttle. I enjoy talking to, and roleplaying with my targets. It makes my own game more fun as well as theirs.
2) ALWAYS honour ransoms. I hate seeing people ransom a target for all they've got, and then popping them regardless. It gives honourable pirates like myself a bad name, and makes people less likely to accept a ransom in future. So what if the shuttle pilot gladly payed 10 million? Maybe he does have a hold full of BPO's. You still got 10 mil from a shuttle, which is pretty darn good in my book.
So to the OP, yes, some pirates do ransom, and enjoy rp. From what I hear, Veto are another corp like this. You just have to get lucky.
Oh, and do come over to the darkside. Show all these carebears what a real pirate is like! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Excellent post m8, and I agree. Personally I try to ransom everyone and sometimes I'll even just start conversations with my attackers/attackees(?) heh.
I honestly believe the reason you don't get many people ransoming anymore are the killboards. Not sure if this was mentioned yet in this thread, (didn't bother reading them all), but just like any game that implaments stats, you get the stat *****s.
People get so interested in getting their "ratio" or whatever higher than their mates that they don't care about anything else but getting that killmail. It's a sad time.
But if I ever see ya around I'll definately ransom you. There are some still out there like me.
Cheers matie.

<victim> man i just got that ship... <pirat> i just got that ammo <pirat> you don't see me complaining
Guys donÆt any of you get me wrong I lost in total more then 1bill isk to pirates à and still I have came up smiling on a 250mils loss why à just because the pirates accepted my convo and agreed to make my game experience more fun à you all talk about real pirates weÆll THIS A GAME so donÆt u forget that even if u role-play à ok so I just have to say this is a social game cos with out us you æll have no future we provide youÆre equipment and least but not last youÆre targets so just as courtesy à try and have a nice and decent conversation with us à WeÆll I know some of you are à and I really appreciate those but some are here just for he kill boards and I agree as well that some victims lose theyÆre temper weÆll for those I have the list off consideration cos they should really stay in high sec. à me PERSONALY I EXPECT ALWAYS TO be killed when I go to low sec à and in like 90% of the time that is the outcome but when like 4 out of the 5 times my convo is rejected then I tend to get angered cos you should always remember à with out us youÆre usefulness will be no more !!!
Basically remember that there are players (over the age of 18) like me that like a little bit of chat à donÆt ignore me completely once my ship is no more!!!

Some people still ransom, but unfortunately, when they do, they are often met with abuse and mistrust.
Salvaging will make ransoms even less likely.

If i meet you at a gate or stn and i have tank senties, I will most likey not ransom. If i am sniping. Better convo me before you hit the gate if you dont have instas.
If i find you in a belt or plante. I will try to ransom off a quick look at your age and ship type. But the Price is close to the normal cost of a ship, IE: BC's i ransom @ 20m. Your paying so you dont have to spend the time on finding and buying a new one, then fitting it. --- If i'm posting on the forums, it's mostly cause i'm at work :D

You will never get ransomed in a shuttle btw. if someone is willing to pay a ransom on a ship worth a few k isk then u really want to find out what's inside. if u've been playing a while then u may well get ur pod ransomed. same with haulers to some degree. t2 and faction ships are often ransomed because they cost the pilot a lot even if they have no modules at all fitted. but tbh most pirates are fine for isk and just take pleasure from watching ships pop and pods squish

I've said it once, I'll say it again. If you ever catch me, dont bother ransoming, I wont pay it. I already pay CCP to play this game I am not paying you(Pirates) for access to game content thats already included in my $15/month.
On that same note, a little conversation never hurt anyone, at least smack a little or something...

I am personally very active in local. So active, in fact, that my good friend Xonja gets on me jokingly about making friends in local we are trying to pirate. I enjoy interracting with other players in this game. Typically I do try to ransom single NPCing players in belts. However in a system like amamake or against other pirates we don't bother. I always honor ransoms. I'm very friendly -- Not all pirates are the way you say they are here.

Edited by: Burakus on 22/11/2006 19:16:31 To the OP:
Real piracy has almost been lost on EVE, despite the best efforts of my alliance (they ones who arent gatecamping *****s... YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE!). When Veto went merc, lowsec piracy took another big hit. Anyway, as a "traditional" pirate I always try to offer a ransom, be fair, and not smack... Sometimes I get carried away and blow up the ship, but I ALWAYS, ALWAYS ransom the pod (outside of big 0.0 engagements, that is). I have no stomach for lowsec gatecamping, and I fly small ships so that I can belt pirate more efficiently.
I hope that with Kali and the advent of warp to 0, gatecamping lowsec is nerfed, and lowsec belts receive better rats and offer a more lucrative mining experience.

And you expect us to check these details in the 15 second window we have to do so? and of course assume you're telling the truth? Hell, while i'm at it, could i have your contact number so i can page you if theres a problem? or should i just get it off your secretary... jeez.

I ransom.
I PvP for two reasons.
FUN, and then PROFIT. I do this to make money. If I make more than 20M or so pirating in my cruiser before I pop, I've earned enough to build two more cruisers with purchased t2 fittings.
With some industrial skills to support it, PvP can be self sustaining.
I want your stuff, I want your money, I want your ship. If I get a guy into structure and I am clearly winning, I will turn off my guns and drones, and ransom.
Most of the time, the guy tells me "I ONLY HAVE 500K!". I then close the conversation, and kill him. Usually he's lying, and pays me 5M for his pod 30 seconds later. This kind of behaviour deters ransoming. You **** about how much money you have, or make up an excuse, I don't even waste time talking, I just close the convo and kill.
If I catch someone I think has t2 fittings, or faction fittings, and they fight back to the extent that I don't think I have enough of an advantage to turn off my guns and ransom, I will kill him and take his stuff.
If I engage at a gate (which I've only been able to do recently, and man is sentry tanking fun and breahttaking in a cruiser!), I never ransom due to the risk it poses to me.
Then, sometimes, the guy ejects, and we get to keep his ship AND fittings. The other night, a guy in a brutix ejected when he hit structure, easy 35M profit with his fittings. --------- |

Nobody will ransom 1 week old pilot in a Frigate. Its simply not worth it ;) Every decent corp has a killboard where pirates earn points by killing ships. Bigger ship, more points. So basicly frigs and cruisers are a no ransom ships. In my career I have ransomed only 1 cruiser and that was defensles Osprey mining Kernite, just for fun I don't know anybody who would ransom haulers as they tend to haul lot of stuff, so don't expect that coming, maybe only if you are cargo scaned and then ransomed, but not likely. I would suggest to become pirate yourselfe and ransom people, I bet you will enjoy much more being fishermen than the fish ;)
I hated going to weddings. All the grandmas would poke me saying "You're next". They stopped that when I started doing it to them at funerals. |

I've been killed twice by pirates, one ransom one nothing.
Neither pod killed, not that i had any implants anyways. But i actually almost got a corp invite out of the first kill. Sure, i could have joined but i knew NOTHING of the game. It was my first 0.4 sec trip, i wanted to see if i could rat some larger and tougher NPC's and i got unlucky. Got a 2 million ISK ransom, and had 1,500,000 ISK and no option but to fight. Got complimented on fighting, not smack talking, and being a good sport.
I make sure to thank the person that killed me for either of the following; ransom, no pod kill, lack of stabs. So far i've thanked for two of the items once, and one of them once. Why's everyone love stabs so much? lol
Everyone needs to lighten up. Low sec is as safe as low sec can be. The way i look at it, every time i enter low sec i'm dead. If i make it out alive(happens most of the time) then i'm lucky. But i never take it for granted. If you can't aford to lose a ship, don't fly it(in low sec).
Heck, i'm wondering about contacting the first person who killed me and asking what they want for a weeks pass in their space. Found some decent stuff on the NPC's and could make up my profit in there.
