Just a quickie...
Oveur mentioned System defences in his latest Dev announcment coming in Kali 2. Amongst other things.
At the moment the place for a pirate is low sec and below, and I'm happy with this. But I enjoy 0.0 and hearing of "System Defences" worries me, and a few friends. Does this mean that we cant enter High sec, so we go to 0.0, only to bump into an alliances space and find they have Sentries which shoot neutrals? Leaving us Pirates stuck in high sec.
Lets face it, no matter what way we look at this, no alliance is going to appriciate Pirates sat next door, and although we can do so much to escape their grasp in space... how much can we do to avoid sentries? Nothing, cept go for it and hope we make it. Like we do every time.
Does this then mean that to be a successful 0.0 Pirate corporation, or have access to 0.0 NPC's, that we have to go into, or forge an alliance ourselves? This then opens up a world I wish to avoid.
System defences worry me. I dont want to jump into any alliances space and insta die to some Arazu and his sentries.
Thanks for an informed response,
Izo Azlion.

You fight the sentries currently in low sec, how would this change (dependant on mechanics) when entering alliance space?
If these MASSIVE alliances organize themselves so damn well in 0,0 and claim areas/regions for themselves, i see it only fair they should be able to errect point defenses
IMO defense of space is ridiculously hard atm ____________________ MOGarmy

If an allance fights to hold sov. in a constellation, they should be able to erect defenses for it. This includes gate sentries. I'm sorry but I'm not shedding a tear for the stabbond "pirates" who can come and go before any form of defense can be mustered, or who log off when they find out they can't leave.
Right now the system in 0.0 favors pirates when it comes to gang warfare.

Jesus christ, I hate EVE for eating posts. Summary:
Alliance defenses will only be available (for a price) in constellations in which the Alliance needs atleast 3 outposts (maybe upgraded as well) in the constellation. EvE's 0.0 will not be swimming with locked down constellations.. --

You warp into a gate to cover 15km in your very expensive pride and joy, without agressing, and the Sentries shoot at you because your Neutral to the controlling alliance. God forbid you would actually have to engage something in front of them.
Major bottlenecks will become impassable unless your on the winning side... its scary. There is going to be little room left for the freelancers amongst us.

QFT imo. A couple of pirates can come in and lock down whole constellations at a time before the Alliance fields together a response team. I would think, after an Alliance has set up itself and survived in 0.0, that they would have better ways to defend themselves. (Maybe I'm bias) --

personally hope that you are wrong... would be very sad if this was the case.
yes - it seem like 'player empire' are going to get stronger... but with that come a new 'sense of security' and 'carebear blob' that will take place in the heart of 0.0. these 'islands' will provide targets like never before, and imagine (hope) that it will be near impossible for alliances to build more then small 'islands' (logistics).
if anything - there will be more fat targets... not less for the small gang, and solo pvper. IWHO of course...

Well he has a point and it does change the types of ships you can fly in 0.0 ATM a small intercepter/AF/Frig/Cruiser gang can be quite effective as there are no sentry guns, if Alliances can just setup guns in any system the have soverenty in then you need BC/BS or damm well fit cruisers to tank the guns while you shoot the locals.
I am in favior of guns in outpost systems, and maybe even gate guns that only fire if the person is flaged as a war target or for aggression. Other than that it would just ruin some of the fun gank squads and just add to the blob mentality.
Vote NO on blobs!

so... those that have put months, clones, ships, and ISK into territory shouldn't be able to defend it against a WCS fitted chicken**** pirates who pop in, hit a barge, then leave without even looting the can?
see, it takes 2 minutes to place a bubble, usually a few minuts to assess a threat and respond. by that time the usual stabbabond has either run away or logged off in the system, usually for 12-24 hours or more.
there is no defense for an outpost system at the moment.

We're a ***** squad of Pirates, we have one fast scout in most gangs, as does any roaming Piracy or gank squad, having a Domi scout is like having a Truck in an F1 race.
Then we warp back and have to get to the gate before it cycles to us? Mmm nasty.
That said, if its directed at war targets and agressors only, as mentoned above then its a little more acceptable.

Anyone can go anywhere, gank, and log.
Static turret defenses aren't the cure for that. Looking at logouts is.
Being fairly new here, I see very little opportunity to squeeze into 0.0 space that isn't already claimed by a big alliance. There are tons of 0.0 space that isn't used, but big alliances overexpand and get fatter than is necessary.
If these static defenses go in, it'll do even more to hurt the possibilty of new players/corps/alliances from trying to stake a little claim in 0.0.
So no, that argument doesn't hold water from this end.

they can't be defended because of the continued use of WCS, or those "pirates" haul ass out after 1 kill, usually not even looting the can.

Think its fair to say that this is of concern to everyone neutral who enters an alliance held 0.0 system; not just Pirates.
Considering that everyone is expected to make a move into 0.0 at some point; the worst case scenario that every alliance pops up defences everywhere and prevents anyone neutral sneaking into their space is quite worrying.
I assume that CCP will put some sort of controls in order to prevent alliances from closing off huge tracts of space to everyone else; but some clarification over the requirments and limitations of gate controls and sentries would be welcome if only to put our minds at rest!

in some ways i fear system defenses might render interceptors/frigs for solo/small group pvp in 0.0 quite useless. as they can't tank sentries that well ... also instas become more needed than before (who wants to approach a gate in a paperthin ship while beeing shot by sentries??)
imho it will make the game even more static than it allready is ...
i doubt you'll often see then smaller gangs roaming around - either a big blob of ships .. or no ship at all ___________________

OK i think ppl are misunderstanding how the sentries will be setup..
Firstly i am pretty certain that there will be point defenses at outposts(?) so this isnt an issue to pirates.
But for gate defenses, i imagined them to be 'inside' the system...
EG. Outpost system XYZ, your inty gang warps to the XYZ gate, NO sentries there... you jump into XYZ, couple of secs the gates start targetting you...
You are saying that you cannot warp away once in system to avoid these sentries..?
If anything imo it will play out that the sentries simply help to FIGHT blobs, large enemy fleets coming in system, as you can have a little extra punch with your fleet at the gate camp ____________________ MOGarmy

first, the released info states
1) constellation sov has to be held, and probably for a long period of time
2) the sentry guns will not be invincible, they can be destroyed
3) it's not as though you can't run FROM them in your stabbabond, and even going through on an insta will be fine.
but now it makes a system SOMEWHAT defendable from cowardly 'pirates' who log or WCS out of anything that resembles a threat.
oh, and some corps that dictor an oupost undock point... that's lame as hell.

This won't apply to ALL 0.0, stop being so melodramatic.
It will only apply to a few select consellations, where there are 3 player-built outposts and the necessary infrastructure to maintain constellation sovereignty.
Or are you saying that after investing 100bn ISK in a constellation, that an Alliance has no right to build a little sentry gun on a gate? The reality is, they have earnt it, and will be paying a multi-billion ISK monthly fuel bill to maintain it.
It simply isnt realistic to say that an Alliance who has developed a constellation to that extent should be unable to build static defences. Of COURSE they should. Did pirates of the high seas hold up ships outside fortified ports? No. Did they intercept ships on the trade lanes? Yes. As you will do.
Adapt and thrive.

If ANYTHING, this is going to make EVE less static, as chokepoints will start to be claimed it seems. Therefore, your going to have the map redrawn as Alliances go to war fighting over the entrances into 0.0 and all. I don't see where your arguments are. --

no, here's what happens.
defending alliance is in the system, ratting, mining, whatever.
'pirate' in stabbed ship comes in, flys out and nails a ratting raven. then the 'pirate' safespots.
if you lock the system down with bubbles, the 'pirate' logs off, or jumps safespot to safespot for aggro to go and then logs. with WCS fitted and jumping around SS's scanning out does nothing, especially when they log.
or, they just insta out and leave, leading to a 10 jump chase which is boring as hell.
90% of 'pirate' incursions they don't get anything but a killmail. it's sad, actually.
Thats them. Not us. I cant tell all the pirates in the universe to not fit stabs, but I assure you thats not us.
That said, I understand your worry there, but how would sentries in 0.0 change any of that anyway?

Sure. I read a lot of speculation and "probablies".
And still have yet to see how pirates logging out is any different than anyone else logging out. That's a separate issue that has nothing to do with sentries, and really does need a serious look-through and resolution. Just not static defenses.

No, its called 'use your brain'. No more blindly walking into an Alliances space with a couple of Stababonds thinking you are invincible because you can (and will) just log off if things look unfavourable.
Use the map. Think about their travel routes. Go to areas without constellation sov... its really not difficult when you think about it.

I agree.. don't get me wrong, I'm not referring to Veto.
I'm referring to other corps that roam around in stabbed ships and log whenever they get into a bind, which is frustrating because it's an i-win button for 'pirates'
I feel there should be a balance between blob warfare and complete vulnerability.
right now you can't lock down your own system, you can't even place guns outside an outpost. a gank squad of 10 comes in, warps to undock point, drops a dictor bubble, and anyone inside the station now has to stay there or become cannon fodder because of the undock process.
bubbles take forever to set up, and even then a MWD'ng stabbed vagabond can just MWD out and to the gate. and you can't catch them because an inty will die to it, and anythign else is too slow.
there needs to be a middle ground, and to be honest if an alliance spends 40-50bil ISK developing a constellation, they should be able to erect some defenses... right now there is NOTHING to defend the outpost except for POS spamming (which as you know is lame) and catching the system at a low point.

I think we agree on things but see the reason as different. I don't want to go into hostile space in my crow and get popped by sentries either, especially if they do it in a pipe system. But on the other hand, there are cheap gank tricks used against outpost held systems that leave the outpost holder with no way to counter.
I think its fine if i wan't to warp to a ISS station in lets say a tempest and hope some one pops out and fights. They can choose to defend it,but in truth i can't even really attack it.

some run 1 WCS on a ratting ship so they can chain spawns.
our corp has a no WCS policy except for travel.. and even then most don't use it.
and again, read my posts- I've never came across a stabbed veto pilot, I'm referring to other 'pirates.'
however my point stands, 3 vagabonds should not be able to lock down a system just because they use stabs and nanos and run away or log.
Noted, and I appriciate your recognition of this. I do of course realise that many Pirates do gank and log, and thus they are not pirates, merely gankers...

I see what you're saying, with that I suppose defenses will be limited, they might not even be that powerful.. if they start locking out gates and such, then I agree it's going too far.
I'm sure there will be a compromise allowing us to defend a system from cheap gankers, while also making it so we'd still have to fight to hold it.
as to the Tempest comment above, it's all fine, but how about sniping tempests 200km from the undock point? what's the point of that? as soon as something comes out that's not a hauler or frigate, the Tempest pilot warps away and logs or runs to one of many safespots... in fact he's usually aligned and at full speed anyway.
blobbing sucks, but so does 'guerilla' tactics that are just lame.
You and your corp has every right to be worried since you have no territorial asperations and fight as a pirate would... not always fair, but honorable (ok as honorable as a pirate can be :)) however for those other corps that gank and run, I hold no sympathy.

My counter point would be...
Any alliance that cannot deal with 3 vagabonds should not be able to throw isk at the problem via AI sentry guns with hopes that it will go away. Which, by the way in the case of 3 vagas, it won't cause vagas will be fast enough to avoid the sents anyways so you will still be in docknloglockdown when they enter the system.
The problem you describe is not about sentries or cowardly pirates at all.. It's about poor organization, lethargic play and the alliance mentality of everyone npc and get rich while no one defends. What you really need is an automatic sensor beacon for your alliance setup completely surrounding your space that puts out an alliance wide broadcast similar to the following.

There are 3 cowardly vagabonds approaching. They entered from gate a and exited thru gate b. Outpost system C is their likley destination. I suggest you put a dictor bubble on gate d and get some people with scrams and webs to lock them down and kill them when they jump in.

Let me first say... I have no experiance with you guys in game, so I choose now to take you at your word that you are indeed "pirates" and not lamer gankers.
I agree with you in full that static defense should not stop pirate incursions. (nor other small scale incursions) But I disagree that sentry guns at gates would have this affect. It would simply stop you from camping that gate. Which is just fine by me.
Combined with much better system scanning. I don't see why this will even be a problem. (presuming that with the new scanning, we get better "warp to" options for items found on the scanner)
Personally though, I don't want sentries at gates. I'd rather see them at stations.
But as I said before, they don't need to be uber to do the job they are there for. They just need to keep hostiles from camping gates. They should not be able to break an enemy fleet though. Thats just rediculas.

I think the sentry guns should lean towards the expensive/fragile side. (A bit, don't want to make them totally useless.) The idea being that an alliance would put some up in key/home systems that are busy, so that the guns would provide them an edge in holding them and keeping them secure. But the cost/destructability would deter them from being just tossed around everywhere.
So yes, pirates would have a harder time slipping into main systems, but roving around and/or ganking travellers would be mostly unaffected.

This would resolve the daft situation of having to ask 'is it clear outside' when wanting to undock, plus how the **** can it be totally safe warping to an enemy outpost but not to POS.
Not sure about having them at stargates though. We want fresh pirates to shoot at not half beat up ones.

They tried that with POS's but we still get POS spam.
It's almost impossible to balance something price wise in this game. Since there are regions like down south with complexes worth billions a day. Or ratting systems like up north where you can easily bank 1bn in 23 hours just ratting. And those are more or less singluar activities.
Forget about trying to balance isk/time when some corps do uber mining ops twice a week and take in unreal amounts of isk. While others spend their time hunting up some PVP, and usually not finding it.
Each constellation should have a hard limit of the number of sentry guns that are placeable there. No matter what.

So you are allowed the luxury to guess they will be weak while others are not allowed the luxury to guess they will be strong? If a dev has stated the guns proposed strength in relative terms(such as your sentry drone example), please in form us as that is part of the problem we are having with this argument; we just don't know how much they cost, how much dps, how much tank, how fast to lock these things are.
Edit: Forgot to add the cost element.

Player owned gate guns are a two-sided sword. Pirates can also use those to cut of a region.
But if 0.0 gate sentry guns really come, this is seriously the most stupid thing DEVs ever did. 0.0 is meant to be PVP space. Automated kills with sentry guns just cause boredome for all involved people. In the end alliances will have their guns in their core systems and pirates will have theirs on the chokepoints. And all we have to do is to log on and check our killmails, then log off.
Some people allreay run their POS as gank-station. Once this can happen to gates - good n8 EVE!
However - rumours are rumours and patch is patch. Let them come!

First, I love how the people who make 100 man blobs call the people who engage against the odds the cowards. (I am speaking from only my personal expereince, with my corp. Again i'm not saying no one in snigg flys vagas, but we hardly, form my knowledge, come, gank, and log). I understand your frustration with someone who comes, kills, then logs, thats different and like it was said before that is not piracy.
I've never flown a vaga, and i've never pvp'ed with stabs, so when I can go somewhere, kill and 'try' to loot the cargo, and get out, how is that unfair? Its not my fault that an entire alliance can't stop me. Putting up sentries, wherever it is, is only going to make me go towards using really fast, stabbed up ships, so i can get through the sentries.
I think it would make sense to be able to put sentries around an outpost (even though they are invulnerable anyway) but putting sentries on gates is nerfing piracy too much. Alliances SHOULD be vulnerable to small gangs or even single pilots.

You should have realized by now that the only effective way to catch most "pirates" in alliance territory is A) blob up, or B) blob up the next system over and push the pirate into the blob.
The reasons for this are many, and I'm sure you understand many of them without my help. Primarily though, most "pirates" aren't. Not by your standards anyway.
But understand that from my perspective, Snig is just as annoying and pointless as Burn eden. The only differance being that Snig doesn't log when we come to fight. They simply run. What is the differance?
In both cases, you came, ganked someone (or tried to) and then ran away. WCS, Logging or simply warp/jump doesn't change the reality of the situtation.
Understand that I don't see this as a problem specificly, but that you need to understand that a "good pirate" and a "lame ganker" are exactly the same thing to a guy in a mining barge.
All that being said. I have nothing but respect for the members of SNIG that I've dealt with. Even the ones that killed me. While Burn Eden is, in my experiance, a bunch of ganker tards with no honor.
Unfortunately it doesn't matter which of these two groups I run into while mining/ratting. Either one is likely to ruin my day. Or at the very least, interupt it.

outside of doril I've never had dealt with snig, so I don't know how you operate. If you don't run stabbabonds or log at the first sign of trouble, that's great.
I'm not going to point out who does the 'log and run' or whatever.
and as to someone who said that it's soo easy to defend against a couple gankers in a system with 3-4 gates, try it syourself sometime. it's not as easy as you think.

@ Locke- I haven't fought against IRON in a long time, but most alliances idea of "coming out to fight" is 3 to 1 odds. (which against some alliances we still engage in) but i guarantee, that if any "pirate" group brought 3v1 odds, those alliances would also run away. (most people in eve run at 3v1 odds, which is understadable) I'm not saying you shouldn't defend your space, but don't complain when you don't get a fight 3v1.
When it comes to PVP though, me against a barge IS a gank. I understand that. Sometimes we are looking for ganks.(chance to make isk) and other times we are looking for a fight. Which we *usually* have to engage really outnumbered. Which is fine.
@ Vincent- the introduction of interdictors makes catching ANYONE easier.
My problem is, empire is there for a reason, if sentries are introduced to 0.0, eventually, MOST of 0.0 will have them. If you want to be safe, go to empire.
The other thing that I am seeing is people first complain about pirates in low sec, we gank, we gate camp, etc. Now that we have moved to 0.0, the complaning continues.

There is a difference in principle between logging and running. Running away is using in-game means of escaping as opposed to out-of-game means, and is therefore legitimate and acceptable.
If you want to kill pirates use ingenuity. For god's sake don't blob a pirate. What do you think will happen? He'll stand up to a battleship gang?
The key to successfully engaging and overcoming pirates is to convince them that they can win. How you do this is up to you. Use cloaked battleships, e-war fitted badger mark IIs, force them through camped gates, EVE was made for this stuff.
But I take on board your point about logging. Not a lot you can do about that. But at least if they need to rely on logging they aren't a very competent player and therefore you shouldn't worry about that. Like you said the loggers would be more of an 'interruption'.
In terms of thread direction I would like to hear people's opinions about potential effects the sentry guns have about smaller ships. That's a major issue for me.

Wow, 3 pages and we don't even know what the defences are going to be yet! Everyone is jumping to so many conclusions. "The pirates won't be able to come in and kill anyone without 30 or more people!!" Really? Where did you read that? All I read was in extreme circumstances some defences can be setup. Did they say that any 0.0 space with 3 or more people will be able to get up 15 concord guns at every gate for free? NO! For all you know they will take T2 ammo only and 5mil a day in fuel, you'll be able to have 1 that cost 100mil at only 1 gate and it will have 1200HP between armor hull and shield.
IF any system could set these up and IF they were as powerful as oncord and IF they were KOS then yeah it would screw pilots. For all you guys know they won't KOS, perhaps they will take a person or something to tell them to attack. Who knows?

I assume that CCP will put some sort of controls in order to prevent alliances from closing off huge tracts of space to everyone else; but some clarification over the requirments and limitations of gate controls and sentries would be welcome if only to put our minds at rest!
It's called other players fighting back in my opinion... If you dont want allow Alliance to take space, claim it yourself.
I dont want to claim it. I dont want the logistics nightmares that have to be organised, its already bad enough having to haul ships into Low sec. I want to raid it, run in, get what profit I can, and get out preferably without losing my ship and pod. I expect player resistance. I expect them to shoot at me and try and scan me out. I dont expect to be erased by some Sentry gun.
Nor does a Alliance members alt, perhaps set to Neutral hauling stuff down.
Also, this could cut off alliances that are not next to Empire... interesting thought.
no, here's what happens.
defending alliance is in the system, ratting, mining, whatever.
This is the worst thing I've ever seen. You obviously only have ONE point of view. LEt me change your comment slightly to show you another point of view....
A gank squad jumps into a system hunting for someone, ratting, mining, whatever.
'miner' in stabbed ship gets targetted, flys out, then the 'miner' safespots.
if you lock the system down with bubbles, the 'miner' logs off, or jumps safespot to safespot and then logs. with WCS fitted and jumping around SS's scanning out does nothing, especially when they log.
or, they just insta out and leave, leading to a 10 jump chase which is boring as hell.
Could you be more one sided on this?

So here's a thought. How about expanding the electronic hacking skills to include the ability to hack into an unmanned defense system and shut it down - essentially neutralizing it until the owner can physically show up and reset it? If an alliance leaves an area totally unmanned, then there should be an opportunity for attackers to eventually breakdown the defenses. It's a branch of information warfare in RL, and could be an interesting part of EVE. This could even apply to Empire space where there are local defenses at gates with no Concord or Faction ships. For example, unassuming pirate covops jumps in and hacks a defense system that then allows all his buddies to jump in without getting shot at by the unmanned system defenses. Wouldn't that change the tactics of some pilots!

I'd have to agree with the idea of outpost systems only, or 0.0's that have controlling alliances.
Sentries in those systems would make sense, and would be most fair. Other than that, meh, but I dont know all that much about 0.0.

I can see why your not worried your play style isnt getting nerfed its not like ISS is going to fly over bob space and start running gank fleets or anything of the sort. A pirates play style is getting nerfed in 0.0 its as of right now the only place in eve where you can get in your crow claw or what ever interceptor and go kill stuff with out waiting 15 minutes to leave system while you sit in a safespot twiddleing your thumbs.
Before you go about spewing OMG pirates stabs logofski etc try to consider the issue from our point of veiw. These Changes more than likely could be the end of roaming ceptor fleets etc, its not decreaseing the need of blobing and numbers its increaseing it. To the people that our saying well you can blow them up etc its fairly pointless jump in system in your battleship kill the sentry guns then fly back and get your ceptor? Sure not every one will because to put these up everywhere but look at the Rate ascn is going its only a year tops before they have the entrance to every region they control locked down with these "defenses". Its effectively ending 0.0 and just making it alliance vs alliance combat with cap ships

What makes you think I don't go anywhere?
And you obviously didn't read the thread, this is regarding sentries at outposts, I'm not fond of any kind of gate control at the moment.
Quote: Before you go about spewing OMG pirates stabs logofski etc try to consider the issue from our point of veiw. These Changes more than likely could be the end of roaming ceptor fleets etc, its not decreaseing the need of blobing and numbers its increaseing it.
The problem with stabbed ships is that it essentially forces blobing, because you neet to nail them with 4 points of scram to even catch them.
Quote: To the people that our saying well you can blow them up etc its fairly pointless jump in system in your battleship kill the sentry guns then fly back and get your ceptor?
even if there was a gate gun or two, in an inty you'll easily be able to decloak and warp before a sentry opens fire. And on the way back you'd be able to insta out of it.

I completely understand what you're saying. All I'm asking is to see things from the other side as well. Right now, outpost systems have no defense at all, simply because there's no way to catch someone, even with a dictor bubble.
*hopefully* with the WCS nerf things will be fixed to where small gangs can invade a system, and an equal size force can engage without having the hostile warp away.
It's frustrating when you bust your ass for months, get into a system and claim it, and actually hold soverigenity, only to have someone invade in an inty, and log off in a safespot, and just keep logging on and off in the system.
In fact, there's no real answer on what's going to be allowed. There is a lack of outpost defenses, you know that as well as I do.
as to gates... meh. I don't care. As to stabbed combat ships-if you use them, the guilt's on you. If you don't, then
i don't care if you're a pirate, carebear, even part of ISS... using stabs on a combat ship is lame.
keep in mind this is coming off of a POS war that's lasted a long time... I'm tired of capship fighting, POS warfare, and super-blobs.. just because I'm ISS doesn't mean I take part in 100-man fleet gangs. I've been in something like 2 in the past 4 months.

I did read this thread Ive seen the arguments. I think you dont go anywhere because Ive killed plenty of iss and Ive never seen a ISS gank squad or someone solo out to kill neutrals or another alliance in a sector of space they dont actively claim.

So ive got to have instas and what if the target bubbles the gate I cant run out of the bubble the sentries own me and I cant run through the bubble with the added dps of the sentry guns. How do I make instas in my pod or battleship? What if I want to kill something at a gate.

No, its called common sense that they wouldn't put in such a drasticly game ruining, for corsairs, feature. Some defenses should be able to be established but nothing along the line that empires can make/have. They just have so much more logistical support then any player alliance could ever have. So it makes sense that the sentries would be corispondingly weaker. ------------------

fine let outposts have guns Im fine with that just make it so they dont shoot someone unless they are shooting at the station as it stands now no factions sentry guns will open up on a hostile with out him shooting at the station. Stop whining! As many pirates have said:"Risk vs. reward." So deal with it. Pirate life shouldn't be easy after all. Learn to adapt is the way. So cannot use cheap ships to swarm large ship anymore? Tough, use larger ships then. Too costly? Well, learn to make money to support your pirate toon. When alliances spent so much money on creating defense system, pirates should spend more money to deal with the situation. Cannot have best of both world you know.

UMM its clear you have no idea what we do. We dont use "cheap ships to swarm larger ships" pirating as it is isnt profitable for the most part its very hard to make isk. Im talking about the essential nerfing of 0.0 by adding sentry guns your taking the 0.0 out of 0.0 period. I personally consider roaming ceptor gangs and such are cheap ships against expensive ships. Don't tell me most of the pirate gangs are not using large number of ceptors and maybe one or two recon/hac. I have seen too many of those. Why should pirates be able to flying around 0.0 space, within alliance systems without and check? After all, alliances have spent a lot of money and time to build and guard the systems they have claimed. It is only logic for alliance to be able to create good system wide defense to keep the people they don't like out.
It is not like those defense systems cannot be destroyed. So, pirates have to spent time to remove the defense. Guess what, that is what defense system is for. People who travel through low sec and 0.0 chokpoints have to deal with the risk of getting ganked, what is wrong with pirates now have to deal with it in hostile systems? For the reward of fun and money, you must be able to take the risk. If you cannot, then don't go to the systems with defense systems. Risk vs. reward apply to everybody.

Edit: Forgot to add the cost element.
Considering the current state of POS wars that many consider 'game ruining', I don't see how you can so confidently assume that the devs will not miss the mark on this as well.

1 we dont generally do roaming ceptor gangs but ceptors are not cheap a crow is easily 25mill with out fittings then the fittings we use t2 launchers faction warp disrupters etc.
2 its not about isk having lots of isk shouldnt let you lock down a system you should have some dedication to defense not this oh I farmed my complex for 10 hours to day I got 2 bill so I shouldnt have to defend my space. WE deal with it daily alliances can come into the systems we npc in at and kill us. Pirates can be attacked any where generally once you hit below the -5 mark which most of us are.
its getting ganked by static defense systems that is wrong.
btw the general snigg fleet makeup is 3 to 5 ceptors 1 to 2 dictors 2 or 3 recons a command ship 2 to 4 battleships and some misc t1 frigs or cruisers. Most are t2 fitted and drop rather good loot. so dont say waaa use you cheap ships arguement on me use it on someone like goonfleet . Want to be a pirate? Join Sniggwaffe |

We shouldn't have to have sovereignty anywhere, or capital ships, or huge numbers, just to do good in 0.0. We shouldn't need to have huge gangs to get anything done. We shouldn't be blocked out of alot of 0.0 game content by these brigands who are too lazy to defend 'their' space. Anything that closes off an area ruins a game like EVE. I dont see why alliances should get stuff that automatically defends against people that might interfere with their monopolies of 0.0 riches.

Noted, and I appriciate your recognition of this. I do of course realise that many Pirates do gank and log, and thus they are not pirates, merely gankers...
Theres a fine line between what we do and what others do, but it is there, and we - being Pirates - strongly believe in it, which is why we sometimes post quite strongly.
We dont mean any harm by what we say.
Back to topic, What scared us was every system in alliance space having 2 sentry guns per gate, plus their alliance defending ships. Its all to come, and we cant tell CCP what to do, but you (Being everyone that isnt a Pirate, in particular, or jus random neutrals) can surely see why we worry.
We're already restricted from High sec... Be a bit bad to be restricted from 0.0 too!
Anyone else find it ironic that the only engagment this guy has ever had with us was us killing his stabbed up caracal?

In the past there were pirates that worked to nations against other nations. They were privateers (not to confuse with the odd new corp), who were given free reign over any enemy of the nation the worked for. So maybe that would be a new direction to scream yaaarrr into the wind. Just a thought. I had quite a bit of fun in Amamake at one time I feel your frustration. That being said, system defence for alliances are an absolute must. Our region is invaded at least 15 times a day usually a single ceptor or hac. they come in run around we get after them they log or run away. I ask them if logging on and off all day is fun, but they dont answer. Its not fun for us either.

I don't think there is really much cause for concern. These new sentry guns will not be like NPC or even POS guns. At most I imagine they will be the big brother to sentry drones. Just as fighters are to combat drones.
They will be killable, probably have some heavy logistics to keep them running on top of all the pre-requisites and for all we know at this stage you can jam / damp them.
I read somewhere that they could only be deployed on gates where you had sov of both adjoining systems. This would mean you can still hit borders without a problem. If you want to invade you just have to take sov of the outlying systems first at which point I assume the affected guns would be offline. I don't know for sure but it sounds like a solid mechanic from a conquest game mechanic mindset.
Raiding the core systems of a well established alliance will be harder but it sounds fair to me. I doubt very much that these sentry guns will be able to hold a gate without players helping, it just means a smaller gang can camp the gate successfully.
At most I forsee a greater need for CovOps to get in and bookmark a secure system before raiding in small / fast ships that can "get under" the sentries.
Really I think everyone should chill until the mechanic is actually finalised.

I have never used stabs on a combat ship, it's a waste of a low slot.
I know this is off topic but I have to clarify a point here: For certain pilots wcs are a STANDARD part of their COMBAT setups.
The above poster is one of them.(at least on his Vaga)
I personally have had points on him more than once and woosh off he warped.
As for the sentry guns, I will be happy to see them outside outposts but I am not really in favour of them being deployed at standard gates. There was something in the pipeline regarding player owned GATES(Las Vegas Dev Q&A IIRC) Now in that case I believe sentries should be permitted.

Oh no something that might upset the pirates.... Welcome to Eve, its not fair and its not about you. Looks likely that you'll have to compromise to deal with the solution, just like we have to if we go into low sec territory or put up with it, like you tell the rest of Eve, when you end up getting suicide ganked at a gate in high sec 0.5 gate.
But my guess, these weapons will not be set to kill neutrals, only those that the Owners designate or have low standings set for. Looks like you'll have to behave more like pirates in the caribean, and have allies and safe bases and operate tactically, rather than free roaming easy kill gangs.
Could this be the best thing to happen to the game. Personally I like the idea of Pirates in the game, but its the Griefers who use it as an excuse to garner Easy kill mails, rather than those who are Role Playing that will suffer the most.

Personally I think this thread is living testament to why CCP should never allow player alliances to fully control areas of space in the game.
The playerbase in general is far too immature, and hold grudges too easily.
(for instance the "pirates/alliance sheep/carebears are stabbed up smacktalkers!!one" attitude).
CCP need to recognise that allowing player alliances to effectively lock down areas of the GAME ENVIRONMENT with the liberal application of sentry guns will only lead to one thing, people not being able to experience the game from all fronts, and explore every angle.
Ultimatley this will lead people to leave for greener pastures.
If people want to hold their space, they should have to work to hold it, organise patrols of players, gather resources and colonise areas, build outposts, organise security.
Several alliances are already doing this, and surprise surprise, they hold their space with no problem.

i find this whole thing rather funny. CCP created alliance, which promote fleet warfare, which the servers dont support. Now they are coming out with a static defence system that will hurt the people who do small number raid. Pushing you futher into fleetbattles, further into blobbery, that the server cannot support. And the people here who think it will make them more secure, it will just make people blob up even more. If you can't handle 10 to 15 guys how do you plan on handling 80 to 100

Personally i think a lot of people are over reacting here. Reading Oveurs comments I saw a reference to "limited" defenses, suggesting not empire style sentry guns everywhere but something smaller and no details.
The idea of some sytem/gate defenses for settled 0.0 seems sensible, just keep it limited. For example allowing an outpost to support, say 6 sentry guns anywhere in it's system should not be a problem. Pehaps givng a larger lightly larger number if they have sov in the constellation and more bases. Allowing an alliance system defenses does not mean they will be allowed everywhere, wait and see what exactly is proposed.

The essential problem with 0.0 in EVE, is it's basically impossible to secure a system. The best you get is maintaining gate camps most of the time, and hope they don't bring a bigger fleet.
But lets face it, that's majorly boring.
The key point is the attacker starts with initiative. Gets into system, can strike immediately, and then leave.
Now, I'm pretty certain that the devs won't implement 'NBSI' sentry guns. They know as well as anyone else that'd just be nuts, and would lead to lockdown of chokepoints, and gank everyone coming through.
So what I can see in my crystal ball for the near future: ceptors popping haulers at gates will be a higher risk strategy in alliance sovereign space. However said 'ceptor will be able to fly unmolested unless actively 'at war' with the 0.0 entity in question.
Scanning changes will mean the 'omg too many, safespot and lurk' option will become a thing of the past. They might even do something about 'logoffski' but I wouldn't count on that.

As it stands now, piracy is a detriment to the game and doesn't really add anything.
It's the reason the risk/reward ratio of lowsec is schit.
Everybody and their grandmother is a pirate because there is no downside. Sec hit. Big deal. Use an alt and bring yourself gear from empire.
Can't be hunted down, you can just dock. Undock, redock, ad nauseum.

At least alliances add something to the game. Politics, sovereignty, a society in deep space.
Piracy does nothing except entertain the pirate.
Who are the victims? Noobs. Miners. Haulers. People who can't fight back.
Bounty hunting is supposed to be a "profession."
Name me one pirate hunting corp other than CA.
You know what would make Piracy meaningful?
A way to hunt them. A way to force them to undock. A way to make it so they can't dock in a certain area. To force them to be able to LOSE something.

Thanks for your input. It was very constructive. Stabs are mostly irrelevant in this discussion.
The issue is to maintain security against e.g. a solo vagabond pilot, raiding into space where someone's gone to the effort of setting up sovereignty, outposts and whoknows what else, requires in addition multiple ships on 23/7 'security duty'.
Now mining is boring enough, but it's at least _vaguely_ productive. Gatecamping is amazingly dull. But it's the only way to remotely have a hope of stopping the solo attacker. (Especially when they have stabs fitted).
I'm by no means saying that attacks should become impossible, and I really don't think that'll be the case. I do however, think that a 'defending' force needs a homeground advantage to counter that of the attacker having the initiative.

I'm alright with the idea of alliances having sentry guns, being able to lock gates, alarm systems, etc, etc to control their territory. After all, they earned the right to do so by holding their territory from other alliances.
However, this just reinforces the idiocy that is known as space sec rating in the game. Right now there's 20 different sec ratings, which is ABSOLUTELY POINTLESS. In actuality, there's THREE ratings, high, low, and 0.0. And as everyone from pirates to freelancers to alliance folk have said, lowsec is more of a deathtrap than 0.0 is.
What I'd propose is that alliances be given a lot more tools to monitor and defend their territory. Along with this, lowsec should be made equivalent to 0.0 in terms of ore and rats. Just like 0.0, there should be good systems with ark and bist, crap systems with jaspet and hemo, etc, but on average matching what 0.0 has today (except with regard to complexes).
One of the biggest complaints that people have with the game is that alliances get to claim the best regions in the game and carebear in relative safety there, enjoying the fruits of the best of ores and rats. They've earned their place of course, and the safety of alliance territory today is exaggerated when you take into account gank squads and such, but with a lot of additional new defense features built into alliance controlled territory, alliance members COULD reap the benefits of the best ores and rats in the game with much more safety than today.
Meanwhile, the freelancers and small corps could face the dangers of lowsec (with additional pirates since they can't reasonably send ganksquads into the alliance territories), but be reaping the benefits of 0.0-like profitmaking, balancing out the risk-benefit aspect.
So the alliances get the fat cash generation in near total safety from gank squads and pirates with the exception of the ongoing danger of invasion by another alliance, independent freelancers and small corps get the fat cash while risking being pirated, and those in empire get their total safety and the lower profit margins that come with it.
In essence, 0.0 today becomes claimable 0.0 where you can build a player empire complete with defense systems, and lowsec becomes unclaimable 0.0, luring more people out to PvP areas in search of the vast profits. Everyone wins!
(or they could just give alliances more defenses letting them build an iron curtain around all of the best stuff in the game, and ignore lowsec, leaving it as a deathtrap ghetto where the risk vs. reward formula is ga/nk ) |

Bounty hunting is supposed to be a "profession."
Name me one pirate hunting corp other than CA.
You know what would make Piracy meaningful?
A way to hunt them. A way to force them to undock. A way to make it so they can't dock in a certain area. To force them to be able to LOSE something.
This is the kind off speech that i disapprove, saying that pirates mean nothing in EVE is like saying that EVE is like WOW.
You know what is the problem in eve?Is guys like you that don¦t know s** about the game and were did it came from and what PVP means.
Everybody is a pirate?Lol just because most of the empire to low sec gates are always camped doest mean that there is alot of pirates.
Can¦t be hunted down?I'am a pirate and i hunt down other pirates and they hunt me .
Rat in 0.0 ?If the 0.0 is well defended even pirates have a hard time comming in ,not a bad thing ,but it is the reality.
Alliances do something to the game?So do we(pirates) we are the buffer zone to 0.0 ,and piracy is like other "profession" in eve .
The victims of pirates are everybody ,but dont come to my system with 10 BS ,when we are roaming with 5 cruisers because we will not engage your gang.
Bounty hunting really needs a boost but pirates arent to blame or are they?
Quote: A way to hunt them. A way to force them to undock. A way to make it so they can't dock in a certain area. To force them to be able to LOSE something.
The same can be said about all station hugers out there mate ,and pirates loose more than you when they die because they don¦t have access to empire markets.

Can't be hunted down, you can just dock. Undock, redock, ad nauseum.
Rat in 0.0 for cash.
At least alliances add something to the game. Politics, sovereignty, a society in deep space.

Do not bypass the swear filtering.
That said, back on topic.
You *can* be hunted down, just like anyone else in space. You can be scrambled. We all have the same modules, same resources available to us. Its not our fault if your taking a crap and grabbing a beer while we try to open a convo with your Hulk solo mining in low sec.
Pirates add politics. Look at us, we're a prime example. Finite Horizon, Establishment, Veto... we just threatened a 0.0 outpost, calling upon 4 alliances and the MC to come and get rid of us.
That *IS* politics. Thats it in motion.
People can fight back. Miners should have protection or else they know the risks. People should watch local and use their scanner.
Force us to undock? Wait, wait wait... you have the exact same docking rights as we do. You have the exact same rights, and if you feel you can Pirate as you feel too.
Force us to undock? I've never heard such a laughable effort. We do lose things, of course we do, we fight like anyone else when we're engaged. The only difference is we ransom.
Do not get us confused with gankers. We are not gankers. Many people hate Veto because they think we'll just shoot them, grab the loot and go.
Your reasons are wrong. If there were no Pirates, ship losses would go down so much that supply would exceed demand, then there'd be no profit.
Get over yourself and come and do something about us before you whine that you cant do it beause CCP hasnt given you the tools.
CCP never gave us the tools to pirate... they're the same modules anyone else can use.
Thanks,

I must have hit a nerve.
Yes i use stabs on my vagabond, the reason i am so ****ed, is that the huge alliances whine over stabbed up pirates. When they use stabs just as much if not more. "OMG LOL YOU NOOB YOU CAN ONLY KILL US WITH A STABABOND HAHAHA" When they fly for example thoraxes with 4 stabs

And everybody can be attacked in lowsec.
There are no real downsides to piracy.

Edited by: shadyfox99 on 28/09/2006 20:50:58 Wow, this thread went to a good discussion to the ramblings of some guy who has no idea what he is talking about.
1st- using alts doesn't ONLY help pirates. It is helpful to ANYONE who plays the game, so don't act like pirates are the only ones benefitting from it.
2nd- yes anyone can be attacked in low sec, but pirates can be attacked WITHOUT a sec hit, and WITHOUT sentry guns attacking that player.
3rd- Just because it doesn't SEEM like piracy is difficult to you, doesn't mean you are right. Piracy IS extremely difficult, especially in lowsec. Why do you think corps like space invaders, jokers, and Zombie aren't around any more? Piracy has been nerfed a LOT in the past.
4th- Gate camping is not piracy.
and last, why do people talk about things they know nothing about?
edit: back on topic, sentries in 0.0 is a bad, bad, idea.

First i would like to say that none of us really know whats going to happen until it actually happens.
But to question some of the posts that i have viewed in this thread. Do you really think its ok to cut small pirate gank groups out, by giving large alliance gank groups added turret support?
Does anyone in there right mind really want all the pirates in Eve, forced into forming possibly the largest alliance in history.
P.S. Quite possibly a worthless post, but its my thoughts on the matter none the less.

Edited by: Almakar Envelsion on 29/09/2006 00:05:26 For those who beleive 0.0 is their personal playground, I must say you are utterly naive. From the start EVE has been designed to be as realistic as possable. Corporations driveing the economy, allainces takeing over regions of space. Pirates praying on those allainces. As new tools have been intoduced, EVE has become more and more realistic. First the conq stations, then outposts, bubbles and interdictors, sentry drones, freighters to move the materials that drive our economy. Capital ships to wage war upon others.
As EVE is designed to be realistic, there no reason to prohibit those who have the resources to do as they wish to( within the realms of being realistic ). I beleive the allaince controled stargate sentries will be far weaker than empire, if you look at the general trend youll see that too. Yet this is besides the point.
If EVE was put into the real world, as CCP seem to be trying to acheive from there work on makeing EVE as realistic as possable, there is no reason why allainces should be able to deploy defenses, its their money.
Look to the real world. As technology advanced, the pirates of the seas began to die out. Great wars over territory blossomed. The same with EVE. In the beggining EVE was not very developed, pirates ran rampant. As new tools became avaialble to people and groups formed, the threat of pirates decreased, and yet it did not, as pirates had access to the same tools.
Im not saying pirates will die out, pirates will have to addapt, as they allways have, you cannot stop change just because you wish the behave as children, whineing about "ITS TOO HARDDDD, MAKE IT EASIERRRRR".
Real life is not easy, as is true with EVE, if you want to play a game where you can shoot people without resitance, I suggest you quit EVE and go somewhere else, we dont need the kind of people not willing to work to do what they want.
Honestly its pathetic how people whine about things not being fair, how if something changes, they are doomed. EVE is not fair, EVE is realistic, nor can anyone predict the future of how new content will affect EVE, just as with real life.
CCP is doing a very good job provideing people with tools and capabilities as close to what they wopuld have in RL as possable. Change happens, so get the **** over it and adapt.

First and foremost, Eve is NOT real life, and CCP is NOT trying to make it like real life. So that negates half of your post right there. If you think Eve is ANYTHING like real life, you have some major problems.
Second, none of us pirates are asking to make anything easier, we are asking for sentry guns to NOT be put into 0.0
Out of your entire post, you are correct about one thing. Pirates HAVE adapted. Over and Over again. Why should one playstyle be nerfed more than any other one? And putting sentries in 0.0 isn't JUST nerfing pirates, its nerfing ANY other SMALL pvp corps that operate in 0.0
Lastly, read my sig. If you don't have the cajones to post with your main, then don't bother posting on the forums.

Well excuse me for forgetting to change my char im posting with........sheesh :P
Look at EVE closely, EVE is far more than ANY other MMO out there, we have stocks, a market, POLITICS, corporations with monoplolies, criminals. EVE is open ended and not fair at all...........gee why does that seem simular to the possabilities present in RL.
As I said before, if you want a game that you can go around and do what you want without working for it, your playing the wrong game. With the sentries, your actually going to have to work for your kills, I dont seed anythign wrong with that........oh wait, the sentry guns will be invulnerable and will blow up a dreadnaught with one shot........yes yes, i see your problem now. P a t h e t i c, if you wanna kill people your going to have to work for it, instead of relying solely on human stupidity and stupid mistakes made by your prey. Not that all prey are stupid and make mistakes, there are some fights where the stakes are even, and so be it, if its a fair fight, its fair by chance.
God forbid you have to do anything more than turn on your guns to gank a mining barge whos pilot is too stupid to watch local. -EVE Hardcore, aint gonna find nada better |

The question is how are these guns going to be set up? Can an alliance take any system it wants and just put 40 rapid targetting turrets with 200km range and do BS-level damage on every gate? Do they respawn when destroyed? Do they never miss? The last thing I think anyone wants is alliances to be able to put up NPC blobs at the borders to their space.
Basically, the only way to have sentry guns acceptable is for them to be only moderately useful. Limited damage, tracking, range, and lockon. Oh, and you've got to place them manually. And there's no BPOs or BPCs for them, so you've got to buy them in Empire. And they're not exactly cheap, so it could become expensive with people destroying the guns. And you can only have so many in a system (and only certain systems). At best, they'll slow down an attack... but they arn't going to do anyone's fighting for them.
This is assuming the devs implement this. I kinda got the impression this is an idea they're toying around with. ______________________________________________

How about you actualy go into the system and hunt for your prey, not camping a gate or an outpost for a poor hauler or barge to pop into the camp? That ally invested bilions of ISK to control that space ... how does it control it? what's the use of soveragnity in a system? at least can provide a bit of help for the home guys. in 1 vs 1 fight with same ships at a gate or outpost seems normal for me that "local" guy gets a bit of help of his ally soveragnity over the system. Usualy fights are over until the friends, even in local, get out of warp to location and the aggresor is gone. You want to gank at the gates ... it will cost ya either more manpower or more tanking capabilities.

first sorry to Gewik- I hate when the darn alts get in the way!
Anyway, I wouldn't say killing things in 0.0 is *easy*. Putting up sentry guns in 0.0 is the EASY way for alliances to protect the "dumb" people you were talking about before. We already DO have to work for our kills. How is going into ENEMY territory, outnumbered, and killing...ANYTHING not work? (don't bring up the stab argument, because i don't use them)
Alliances should be able to defend their space, THEMSELVES, not with NPCs. (sentries) You say we need to work for our kills, but you aren't willing to work do DEFEND your space, by actually fighting, you want NPCs to do it for you!
I will admit one thing. From an RP persepective it makes sense to allow alliances to have sentries, but from a GAMEPLAY perspective, it is just plain dumb. There is no logical explanation from a GAMEPLAY perspective why there should be sentries in 0.0 (besides the fact that it makes Alliances feel safer from smaller corps, gangs, etc, NOT just pirates)
I don't know how you can say being a pirate is easy. Being in a small corp, and operating (pvp wise) on a SMALL scale is a lot HARDER than on an allaince level. (blobs)

The problem is, its easier to destroy than to build.
Nobody can take away your public station, there is never a need to defend it.
Having a mobile force that can dock at any civilian facility, never needs to defend territory, never needs to organize Mining Ops, or miner pay, or NPC tank rotation, or chokepoint guard duty, or manage their BPO collection, or have to maintain political contact...
Alliances do all the work, and have all the responsibility to defend "their turf", while Pirates have no responsibilities and have all the fun.
And by Pirates I don't mean just people who practice Piracy.
Could be any band of individuals who live in lowsec or 0.0 and claim no territory.
Alliance life is brain-numbing boring.

Yep. Sentry guns killing players in 0.0. Stupid. What happened to PvP and 'The players make the game'.
We already have those lame arse POS at moons which kill people without player interaction, we dont need another set of stupid exploitable mechanics.
Can imagine, fly to your gate in your Indy, set bubble, wait, let guns kill everything thats not blue, retrieve cargo. The new way to camp a gate. Yay sounds like... not fun.

I am claping for someone who can see both sides and point out other people idiocy. I am a pirate, I dont care if they have gate guns and it wont matter anyway. The alliances will blob, we will hit and run and everyone will complain about everyone else.

I would easily trade sentry guns for the ability to prevent hostiles from logging off in your sovereign constellations. Which of course is their usual MO if they are confronted with a force that actually has a chance of trapping them and killing them.

There are a lot of assumptions in this thread. The biggest is all these pirates carrying on like their doomsday scenario of insta-gank gate guns only affects them.
We are at war with CVA, all the time. If CVA were to secure their claim on the constellation and build another two outposts and deploy guns it would affect me. We often raid their space in ultra-fast wolf packs, strike a few targets then withdraw. Sound familiar? If we were to deploy another 2 outposts and set up guns the next time CVA roll 20 'Geddons into 9UY it would be a bloodbath.
That is IF these system defences are uber-OMFG-instagank gate guns. Where would the fun be in that. Lets look at the trends:
Fighters, like drones but bigger, expensive and can't hit a Rifter for love nor money. Good for toasting battleships.
Outposts. Damn expensive, require a lot of supporting logistics in POSs and fuel. Not quite as good as an NPC station.
What do we know about these system defences?
Damn expensive in terms of supporting infrastructure. 3 outposts + POSs is no small task and an ongoing job to maintain. They will also be destructable.
Now for my assumptions. Lets look at the drone fighter thing for a moment. What other thing is there in Eve that is like player owned sentry guns? Thats right, sentry drones. They do good damage but can't track for ****. Make them bigger, maybe more damage and worse tracking / lock times and persistant so you deploy and leave like a POS. That is what I reckon we will actually see.
They will prevent hostiles from sitting on a gate and camping it. They may get lucky and make a kill if someone is in a slow ship. They will probably be best used as backup shootage to a bubble camp with webs and painters which in a well developed alliance core system I think is fair enough. Small, fast ships will have a much better chance getting past than BSs and it will probably be inty / AF gangs being sent ahead of a fleet to clear gate guns, not uber tanked BS.
This is all conjecture, I think we should just wait and see before we start crying about pirates being nerfed. If CCP put this in the game they way your are presenting it then 0.0 alliance warfare would be kicked in the teeth hard. Nobody wants that so it won't be anywhere near as bad as you are making out.

what I think would be cool for system defenses, would be if they had something along the lines of current sentry guns (probably a little less effective, so that it would be possible to run them, just hard) but in order to deploy them an alliance would need to "register" as an official game faction.
Now, I don't neccesarily mean that they would have to pay for agents/missions or anything (though that would be quite interesting if it could be worked out in a reasonable manner), but more that they would be subject to the low level of warfare that the other factions recieve from each other. The other factions in game would level attacks at them, but not attacks by mission npc's, attacks by uber-npc's, that really took a toll and were hard to keep at bay, and if the alliance didn't satisfactorily keep the invaders at bay constantly, they'd lose their area, and lose their defenses.
That way while they wouldn't neccesarily have to deal with invading player characters all the time, they'd need to work on a daily basis to keep them out.

I really dont know how the sentries will work... I dont know if they will fire if the hostile makes a attack or if they can be setted to fire uppon any pilot not meeting minimum standings to the alliance that owns the system... There is a big difference between those 2 situations ...

Im just worried they will put the feature in the game, thinking the playerbase wont mind, if people dont rabble abit about it. But yeah, most of the rabble is because players simply dont know exacly how its going to work, because details are (as always) not mentioned.
So.. hoping for more details on this.

Wow, so much discussion about one simple game mechanic.
The biggest problem here is lack of information. Then we could have a construtive discussion and agree on some reasonable solution. Right now it is pirate whine versus alliance whine.
To make a few things clear:
1. Alliances HAVE a right to control their CLAIMED space. It is hard to maintain a large number of POSes without good organisation of supplies and player commitment. Some of the POS fuel can only be bought in empire and this is where enemy alliances and pirates come into play. For all this effort alliances DESERVE to control their own space.
2. Pirate is a legitimate "profession" or rather playstyle in EVE. However they are OUTLAWS thus hunted and hated. Right now pirating takes 2 options: ransom and grief. There is no BENEFIT of being criminal (except the fun maybe). We seriously lack content for pirates which could be tied to negative sec status (smuggling skills and such). Now pirates are universaly hunted because they are not any use.
So the conclusion: sentries in 0.0 that need to be maintanined and operated = YES, alliances have a right to work their ass off for added protection. Also YES to more "pirate" content/options for the game. There should be some rewards for maintaining negative sec status.

Yes alliances have the right to defend their space. THEY have the right, not NPC gate guns.
No one HAS THE RIGHT to have help from Non-Player ANYTHING to help them defend. THAT is the problem.
Here is what it comes down to.
Of course alliances want gate guns in 0.0, because it makes defending against smaller corps, etc, EASY.
A pirate's life is NOT easy, so putting up sentries in 0.0 NERFS them, but not just pirates, also other small corps.
Any other argument is really erroneous.
