Tack on one Mercenary Overlord I killed before I took that screenshot. FYI, on initial warp in you have 2 groups of Mercenaries about 70km away. No big deal it seems. Then about a minute later the Shadow group spawned on top of me and opened up a big ole can of whoop ass
Finished the mission with logisitics support

These are mercenairies. Mercenairies do all kinds of damage. I dont see how big the shadow group is but it seems to me that you need to kill the caracals asap since they do EM damage. . Seriously Have I Not Said How I Can Assist Some One You Are Killing Online? |

I cant play yet so I dont know if its doable or not. especially with the instant agro of all the spawns and not just the once that are jumped on top of you.
My setup prior to revelations: 6x cruise t2, 2 tractorbeams 1 large t2, 2 amp t2, 3 hardners t2 (would say 1 em, 1 kin, 1 therm on this one, though a 1 em 1 therm and 1 invulnerability works decend aswell) 2 pdu t2, 3 BCU t2
Again I dont know how this mission plays out. But I would say do the following: Warp in. Can spot, allign for warp out. Wait for spawn to appear warp out. Warp into can 60 KM (so that the other spawns are more than 100km from you) shoot caracals, shoot wingman, shoot BS's.
If its deadspace, warp in, fly away from spawns, shoot caracals as they appear and keep alligned for warp.
BTW I solo silence the informant lvl 4 with above setup but I dont like said mission ;)

Yeah, this was a retarded mission. Lost my Domi to it.
Now what really ****es me off about this mission is that it's retardedly hard for a really low reward mission, what's up with that. I mean, if it had more reward, i would've know more, but man, the reward is so no worth your trouble for this mission. |

Hehe this mission is nice Just did it, looked easy at beginning, but that shadow was quite a surprise - my cap went down to 20% when major forces were killed, this usually does not happen that often in any mission to my carebear-ship .
So if that shadow's mercenarys do warpscramble (don't know it, did't try to warpout) i guess a lot of people will lose ships there.
Maybe it will be easier when warping in at a distance, so that shadow does not appear right next to one ...

Thats about the same as the mission I tried, "The Blockade" (also in a Raven) And this is a LEVEL 2 Mission, within about 2 mins there are about 100 ships around. Shield gone and armour damaged before warped out (With Large Shield Booster on and Invulerabilty Shield on) CAP could keep up with the drain but not the damage (I'm Resistances -25% EM, -70% Explos, -%55 Ken and -40% TM with boasts on)
Reward? 36K and 31K Bonus...NO WORTH IT!!!

Don't be disappointed by rewards, they will grow in the next days, they are always that low at beginning when the mission is new. All in all i think it's quite a good thing, at least some challenge for missionrunners now And those who can't do it allone can bring some friends with them - doing missions in groups is more funny i heard

Half the ships are within smartbombing range.
But the damage output is a bit on the nasty side, especially with those caracals in their optimal range. --*=*=*--

A Raven is about the worst ship for a level 2 one can get. It locks small stuff awfully slowly and its intended weapon system is about as efficient as a noob gun at killing anything smaller than cruiser. And if you use heavy or assault missiles the ship bonus don't apply and it gets outdamaged by a Caracal.
And frankly, your resists are very bad on it too.
Just use the right ship for the right job, for level 2 missions caracal with a mix of assault and heavy launchers will be much better than a Raven.

I just lost my Raven in this mission. Seemed really easy and especially for this reward. I did level 4 missions before, that were doable (Silence the Informant), so I didn't have any thought, that this could turn out the hard way.
But it turned out too hard, my Raven was down in about 15 seconds. What the ... ? This missions is way too heavy compared to the other lvl 4's.
Lost again 200Mio ISK, after loosing hundreds of Mio. in the last months

Anyway, I did it in an Absolution. Kind of surprised when my armor drop below 30% after those Shadow ships spawn. However, I quickly killed those shadow ships and that was it. Armor recovered back to 81%. I don't see how raven could have problem unless you didn't have EM hardeners. Mercs cruisers do Kintic, EM and Therm. Merc ceptors do explosive but they are weak. I poped them all before they even got under 30km from 52km away as I warped in. Merc battleships do all kinds of damage it seems. I know if you just kill the main named ship and get the document, you can finish the mission without killing everything. However, that is not the point of doing missions. We want to kill all the ships! Just remember to tank EM next time and you should be fine.
If you don't want the shadow ships to spawn, just don't kill off all the cruisers from the two groups you seen as you warped in. Leave one cruiser and you will be ok.
I did indeed EM tank and I started warping out as soon as the second group spawned. I had 2 invunls, a therm and a em hardeners all teck II and a gisti B booster and the ship popped in about 20-30 seconds. I couldnt warp as I was scrambled (the ship didnt warp at least).
And alltho its a bit hard to remember right now I dont think I killed more than 1 ship before the respawn and it suddenly got very very bad.
Well, that is the problem with raven. You must kill those ceptors asap or you will be in trouble if you need to warp out. This is why I don't use battleships anymore. Killing the ceptors is the most important thing. Merc ceptors can put out some nasty dps if you let a lot of them get close. Those merc battleships also got pretty high dps as well. It is very rare to see a mission that could make my absolution drop below 30% armor. Not even lvl 4 Angel extravaganza bonus lvl could match that. One thing for sure, the total dps output after the 3rd group spawn is very very high due to massive amount of heavy/light missiles and em/therm damage.

Yeah the damage was insane. I’ve been looking forward to revelation for weeks and now I just feel like quitting.
I’ve lost ships before but that has been to my own stupidity. I’m a very careful player, and always do whats necessary to move as safely as possible in low sec/0.0 and try to not make any stupid mistakes. Nothing is more annoying than losing a ship to your own stupidity and I have no problem admitting when that’s the case. Right now, however, I just feel cheated.
I’m fairly new to doing level IVs but I have done most of the hardest missions. And up until this point there has always been great correlation between reward and difficulty and I assumed that would be the case after revelation as well.
What really ****es me off is that the DEV team sit on information they know will be vital to new players after revelation and its not given in one of the news update posts. A simple addition to the news announcements and all would be good.

Well, after doing this mission again, w/ the hints albeit, from process of elimination, i believe that you need to keep 1 enemy from each pack of enemies(the frigs, the cruisers and bs) alive to not trigger the shadow spawn. I know for a fact taht if you kill all the Mercenary webbers, you'll get the 2nd spawn, which isn't good. However i'm not too sure on the cruisers or bs's.
Also, if any1 could help me in determining the damage types that the shadow guys deal, i'll be most grateful. I guess it's time to try to figure this mission out and move on. |

Hmm... To discover new mission design and find tricks to them is part of the fun though. What gets me is this. Level 4 Stop the thief mission used to be a really really easy mission. I used to do it in Enyo. hehe Anyway, this new one is very different from the missions that I've done in the past. So as soon as I saw it and the reward is set so low, I knew it must be a totally new mission. Thus I took the steps to make sure I don't dive in blindly to get killed.
This is from the experience that I've learned through many mission changes. Losing a ship is part of the learning process and shouldn't be end of the world. It hurts but make sure you've learned how to deal with such situations. This is the difference between those are good at doing missions and those who just doing them. The good ones make a lot of money very safely, the other ones are not. Same goes for pvp. A good mission runner most likely can deal with pvp situation very well. Because they know how to learn from the mistakes and willing to find solution to the problem.
So don't get discouraged. Reading mission walkthrough indeed help you to do missions safer and faster. However, it also make you less able to deal with new missions. It is better to learn mission your own way instead of go with walkthrough. Like I said, to discover new missions and learn new tricks is part of the fun. ISK is just a by product that fund your discovery cost.

There should of course be a way for us to configure the starting rewards 'until' the system has found a stable number, but quite frankly there are about 2 hundred other feature requests that I would like to see implemented first .
As you reminded me about this system I thought about one small problem. If this mission is doable in "easy" mode by not killing every NPC than people will do it and this mission will be permanently low rewarded one. If someone will decide to choose harder path and will kill all rats he will get tough mission with low reward. I think you should add some amount of ISK to those spawned rats bounty.

The information is out there, this is well documented. The trouble is EvE has grown so large and complicated how can dev's tell what you do and do not know and what info is critical to you and when?
Theres hundreds of nuggets of information out there that may be critical to different people, depending on their circumstances, they can't make each one of those pieces of info a news update.

I love hearing about people die on the new missions after patch. Missions are supppost to be unpredicable. That what makes the risk vs rewards equal out . Other wise its all reward.

Edited by: Perseus D''Solos on 29/11/2006 17:21:07 Logged on, got Stop the Thief, though "whoppie! Old mission revisited!!!". Warped in, and I began with popping an overlord, and the subsequent reinforcements just ripped through t2 fitted Domi. I warped out and fetched my faction fittings (Centus X-Type LAR etc). It was still a hard tank I must say.
I'm not going to pop the overlords first next time
Are all mission more difficult now? If so, is it because of the HP Bonus which says nothing of the tankability of a ship? (Atleast the armortanked ones) And are the rewards as crappy? I mean, the dps on this one was nearly equal to the second room on Mordus Headhunters before the patch, and all I got was a lousy 2.5m or so and... 779LP...
That's just awfull.

Just don't kill any of the battleships it seems. Kill all the interceptors and the cruisers and then brace yourself when you kill the first battleship. When that evil spawn does appear, again kill the interceptors as fast as you can. Missions are only dangerous if you can't escape.
I did it no problem first go, and I'm an idiot. Hard missions is what we need. The only complaint is that the LPs and rewards are gonna be pathetic until the dynamic thingymajig updates it. Right now it's taking me an age to do The Blockade for 1k LPs and about 15 minutes to do infiltrated outposts for 10k LP's. The horror.

Edited by: Interstellar Artois on 29/11/2006 20:36:50 Edited by: Interstellar Artois on 29/11/2006 20:27:30 I loved this mission! First time I've actually started to worry I might have to warp :)
I don't fly anything fancy, just a tech2 fitted raven (arbie launchers). 5x hardeners, 1 shield booster and a domi flying next to me just dishing out one shield transfer mod (rest of the highs on it are used for tractors) and I was ok. *just* went into armour.
Reward was pants but heck it was fun :)
If you're careless to lose a faction fitted raven over it on new patch day, you deserve to have to go back to ebay :D
EDIT: Oh yes, in case a dev reads this, please please please cut down some of the environment with this mission. All those 'roids really hurt my framerate, which ain't what you want on a tricky mission!
ANOTHER EDIT: Looking at my journal I don't seem to have gotten any ISK for the Shadow lot, although it looks like a bug as I have the cash for 6x overlords.

Don't kill the Merc BSes. Kill the cruisers first and once you kill a BS you should get the spawn to happen. You can take advantage of this and make sure to get some good distance before killing a BS.

Well this info should be made perfectly clear to any player running new missions. I cant believe that you dont make sure this is public knowledge to even the newest players when releasing a new patch. If I had any idea that there is no correlation between rewards and difficulty for new missions I would, of course, never had accepted it.
I cant believe that such vital information hasnt been made public for every new player to see.
This has been public knowledge ever since the dynamic system was implemented.
So you think it should be obvious for new players how the reward system works from the info that is relativly easy to get your hands on?
Do you have a link that shows this info?
I can't hear that "new players"-whine anymore. If you are new, go do lvl 3 missions. You can't expect that evry new player can do evry lvl 4 mission after few weeks of playing. Gain some expirience first, learn how to fit and tank a ship, and don't drop in unknown mission and then start a whinage when you lost your ship. If they are too hard you are to weak. Do courier missions or get back to lvl 3 missions or wellknown lvl 4s if you are a "new player".

Thought it was just because ima nub. Got to say it was a rush though, just wish I could get the loot from the ships I killed, but I think at this point Im telling my agent thanks but no thanks.

Hehe thanks for the hints, did the mission again now with this - and it was pretty easy this time.
Warped in at 70km (not sure if there was a diffrence from warping in to 0 km like last time), killed those mercenary wingmans (as it's beautfil when cruises hit em with 300 when they approach fast ) and then one of those battelships.
Than shadow and his goons(funny name btw, did you have a certain alliance in mind here ? ) warped in. I only killed shadow himself and voila, mission ready, warped out fast. Took like under 10 minutes this time, the cap was over 70%, so a quite save thing. The report you need from shadow's lootcan can be bought on market for peanuts (they sell in bulks at many stations) - so i'd say it's a nice mission, if payment will go up in next time it will be one of my favourites

Well, to be honest I couldn't care less about mission difficulty or 'challange' just another to add to the list of 'Refuse when givin'.
I only do missions for faction rating due to the RIDICULOUS one you have to have for an Empire POS. So as along as my agent rating allows me to do the RIDICULOUS 16 Missions you have to do to get a teeny little jump in faction rating..thats the way it is

I am just about finished this mission- I have 5 or 6 BS left to kill (from both spawns combined) and I'm done. Saving Shadow for last, but the rest have gone done easily enough. I've had to warp out twice, but nothing to panic about.
Armour resists are all in the 60-73% range, and using just one large t2 repper on a Mega.
I can't see the trouble with this one. It's not as difficult as some of the other lvl IV missions around, and the rewards were low, but this isn't the first mission to appear where you get ambushed and the rewards don't match the grief.
I haven't checked the loot yet, but those BS Overlords typically drop one or two useful items.
*shrug* - hasn't seemed that bad so far...

Well this info should be made perfectly clear to any player running new missions.
This has been public knowledge ever since the dynamic system was implemented.
Sorry, Jiekon, but in reality that is not public knowledge. I have discovered it in the last month, after 6 month of play, from a casual remark of another player in forum. I have done a research with all the keyword I could think of and perused the DEV blog from late 2005 onward and I have found only some other casual reference, never a clear information. I have puzzled it togheter from the different sources, but I like to surf the EVE forum. A new player will have really a hard time knowing it, as it is not cleary stated in the basic information sites. If he isn't informed by older players (who often don't bother or don't remember the importance of this little information) he has no hint that there is a similar notion. Ad if you don't know that something similar is possible you don't have a motivation to search the information. Sorry again, I don't mean it as a flame but only as a suggestion to put it in some of the information on missions. I like a lot the work I have seen so far on the new missions, and and appalud you on it.

The second wave appearing after I popped one of the battleships was quite a shock. Slightly more of a shock was the god-like amount of EM damage I started taking on my raven. Ouch! Resulted in my first warp out in a while :) At least I'll know what to prepare for next time.
I'd like to second the request for a little less scenery in the mission too. Until you find a way to fill up my screen without causing vast amounts of lag (and before I'm told to upgrade my 286, my computer runs eq2 just fine with all sorts of tomfoolery active) keeping it simple is probably best.
Was a fun mission!

I warped in with my faction fitted cnr also got nasty lag for a minute or so, buthad my booster on so was ok, they mass aggro and hit quite hard i can see how any lag would kill normal fitted ships. I use 2 dread invuls a pith b photon and a pith b thermal oh and a pith b boost amp and gist x-xl booster yeh expensive but it keeps my cnr safe.

Actually this mission is quite simple to complete even in a standard techII raven... what makes it easy is the fact that its not actually in dead space.
See you can make a bkmrk whilst in the mission, warp out and then warp back in to the bkmrk to get distance from the shadow spawn.
ABC.
P.S The bad news is that none of the wrecks give salvage components :/ ... loot aint too bad though, most ships drop some mods = nice minerals from recycling.

Hey it's a good thing missions (at least at start) have an element of surprize... Like many others i too lost a ship to it (bout a bilion in the trashcan) but hey! it's not their fault...when you go into combat be prepaired for the worst:P i could have survived easily IF i only had approached the mission with caution and not sat there happily killing the first spawn:P
when i later came in with my simple T2 fitted tempest it was no problem at all (well i warped to 100km lol)
So all in all i think that a little loss now and then more or less spices mission running up (for a few days) and gives you some motive to earn some more ISK to replace the losses hehe OK...gotta run now earn me a bilion ISK...(lots of things to kill)

You can add me to the list of people who are feeling foolish after losing a ship.
Sure, lag didn't make things easier, but I lost my Raven because I didn't know what i was doing and acted as though no mission really posed me any risk.
Replacing the gear hurts, but hey! At least this was jus a regular Raven with T2 equipment. I expect I'd be feeling a bit worse if it had been a CNR with faction stuff. 8-)
And yes, I was also fooled by the low LP and bonus time window. 8-) I'm not sure I'd known about the dynamic reward system... it does sound familiar now that you've all reminded me. Not a mistake I'll make again!
Summary: Of course I'm not thrilled with losing a lot of stuff, but I take a lot of consolation in knowing it wasn't for the "wrong" reasons (bugs, terrible lag, bad game design).
A relatively cheap lesson to learn. Well worth losing my complacency for.

If you are too comfy in your own ways and thinking you are uber, you can loose a well fitted Navy Raven. I almost did. But kudos to CCP. I haven't had this kind of adrenaline rush for a really long time. I had my navy raven with full rack of Gist-X midslot mods down to 24% armour before I had killed enough enemies.
This mission is not doable without an uber tanked ship. if not using any real good warp-out, BM, or sumtin tactics.
Next time I will kill off 2nd spawn cruiser first. Think that is only thing I know so far.

I have to admit, other than the wrecks having NO salvage it was a pretty easy mission. The only time I had an issue with it was when I had CTD with drones out. Once I logged back in and got automatically warped back into the battle, I had no drones to kill the friggies. That did force me to leave after killing everything else to get more drones to kill the frigges but then I dont do missions in a Raven.
Navy Apoc with lots of skills for the win. My base ~80% resists to everything means I dont have to adjust my tank for the mission, I just go and kill what ever is there.

Edited by: Leandro Salazar on 02/12/2006 12:10:12 It is nice to see some more missions that pose a challenge to faction ships or even make co-op viable. (Used to have only EA 5/5 for that which really is a blast now with two ships and reinforcements spawning depending on kills, not timed...).
But it would be even nicer if the bounties and/or loot would reflect that difficulty. In EA you get at least a decent amount of bounty (in the form of tags too so it can't easily be warp-kill-leave-farmed) and sometimes good loot. But these mercenaries and shadows? A lot of damage of all types (=hard to tank) yet the bounties are total pants. Meaning just another mission to go to the decline-heap. --------- ZOMG my sig was concordokkened! I had no problem with this mission, could tank everything at once without hassle. Problably because I got good allround resist (lowest = 70%) and full crystal set, capable of tanking 870 DPS on weakest resist. To bad the wrecks did not yield any salvagable stuff.
Other then that, nice to see new content, some new mechanics and for some....obviously....a new challenge. The old missions were just getting so bored I did quit missioning completely at some point. I havent looked at how rewarding missions are now, and if its worth doing salvaging. But for now, I don/t care anyway, its fun to have something new!
Love you for this patch CCP!

From Tuesday's patch notes:
Quote: The difficulty for the mission 'Stop The Thief' has been adjusted.
What the heck? One really cool mission (if you get it wrong ) and they're fiddling with it? All they should do is remove some of the 'roids to reduce the painful graphics slowdown and perhaps change the description to mention there's a triggered spawn.
It's obvious it's a tough mission to solo. Isn't that what level 4 missions are supposed to be?
OK so I admit the patch note doesn't say if it's going to be made harder or softer, but I can guess which way it's going to go. Another do-it-in-your-sleep mission.
Please devs, don't do it! Look at this thread - see how many ppl are saying "whoa! I lost my faction-fitted CNR! Cool mission - I'll just have to take more care next time!". We want challenges, you want ISK sinks, win-win.

Had no trouble with this mission in a T1 fitted Dominix. I thought to scout out the mission at 100km when I noticed I had the option. The keys are... 1) Killing the first battleship causes the second spawn. 2) Its not a deadspace, you can warp around.
So the sniper tactics are simple.
1) Warp in at 70 or 100km. They will aggro you and approach. 2) Use long range weapons (sentry drones + drone link augmentors + omnidirectional tracking links for me). 3) Kill the frigates first (they web), cruisers then the battleship last. Repeat for the next spawn. 4) If the enemies get too close and start doing too much damage, warp out. Warp back in at 0km. Now they're far away again. Repeat as necessary switching between 0km and 70km.
Took me about a half hour. --- "Only a stainless steel rat can be at home in this environment." |

yeah this one got me. But not in a way that wasnt avoidable or would cause me not to try agian. I think why it gets people is that battleship is fast so you tend to kill it right on yourself. You need to be far away and aligned to warp when you kill that battleship so you can take shadows peeps out on your terms. If you pop it at the 4k it orbits at your looking at a very painful experience. The alternative is two stabs because it seems like from all the stories that shadows wingman have a huge chance to warp scramble (100%?) no databases have this mission as it is that ive seen.

I dont bookmark and warp in and out.
I'm less than a year into this game.
My standard issue Raven, with pretty decent modules, eats this mission easily. It requires a little thought when fitting it, and some thought when doign the mission itself.
Try this setup: 1 XL booster, 1 EM active, 1 thermal active, 2 Invulnerable fields, 1 boost amp, 3 PDS, 2 BCU, 2 heavy NoS. Works for me. Hop eit works for others.

1 pseudoelectron damage control tech 1 bcu 3 * tech 1 pds
warped in at 100, picked off cruisers and frigates dropped bookmarks, warped out and back in at 100 (only did this once) did the same when the shadows spawned, killed them etc.
took hardly any damage and used the booster about half a dozen times, and my drone window was bugged so i had no support from light drones |

This mission is so easy, i did not have to use my shield booster. What i have seen is, the second spawn comes out of warp at the place where the "bs" is destroyd. I use a CNR... It takes a lot more time to loot then to kill the npc.

Let me offer some more advice: Someone already mentioned that the 2nd wave doesn't arrive until you kill the battleship. So first, kill everything else, then rest up, med up (in EQ/WOW terms), whatever you need to do. Be ready when you blow up the battleship. Next step: take out the cruisers first, not the battleships or the frigates. Killing the cruisers cuts the dmg you take by a lot. Same approach you take with 3rd stage of lvl 4 serp extrav, at the warp in. Kill the cruisers and everything else becomes easy.
Had to warp out 3 times the first time I tried this, then realized it was one of those missions where the cruisers do more dmg than anything else. Done the mission several times since, and had no problems tanking in my raven at point blank.
Oh, and while my cruise missiles are taking out the cruisers, my hobgoblins (light drones) are taking out the frigates. People seem to ignore the fact that ravens have drone bays, and that light drones are wonderful for frigates (when you're in a mission that doesn't have drone agro).

I flew a Dominix (2xEXP II,1xTHERM II,3xKIN II Active Hardeners - 1xL.A.R. II - Vespa & Wasp drones). Here's what I did:
Warp in to 0, full reverse. Take out wingmen, then cruisers. Don't bother with the Overlord, as you can tank him, until you are 70km from the Beacon then finish him off.
Contiune at full speed as the next spawn appears. Take out wingmen, then cruisers then BS.
End of story.
